The NBB champion is back
Current winner of the New Basketball Brazil, Flamengo debuts against Brasília in the sixth edition of the competition

Next Saturday (November 09.11th), at 10 am, at the HSBC Arena, Flamengo will take the court to begin defending its Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) title. It will be the champion's return to the stage where it was crowned and secured the trophy for the fifth edition of the competition last June. And the first round already pits the Mais Querido against Brasília, in a repeat of the clash that has already taken place in two NBB finals.
"This championship will be tougher than last year's. The teams have invested heavily to ensure they are strong and at the level required for the competition. Everyone is better prepared. Since we won the last NBB, our attention is heightened, as all our opponents want to beat the champion. Therefore, we expect tough matches," said José Neto, the red-and-black coach.
In the last edition of the competition, Flamengo had a near-perfect campaign. They finished the qualifying round in first place and went 20 games unbeaten. However, a loss to Franca prevented the Mais Querido from pursuing their own unbeaten streak (24 matches), which was achieved in the 2009 NBB.
The culmination of this incredible campaign came on June 1st. At the HSBC Arena, which held a crowd of over 16, Flamengo defeated Uberlândia 77-70 and won the Novo Basquete Brasil title for the second time, with Flamengo's Marquinhos being named the competition's best player. The Mais Querido's first NBB title was in 2009, when Brasília lost in the finals.
From the fifth-season NBB champions, Flamengo no longer has Kojo, Caio Torres, Duda, Feliz, and Alexandre Paranhos. However, three key reinforcements have arrived: point guard Laprovittola, center Cristiano Felício (both play for their national teams), and center Meyinsse. All three can now boast a title with the Mais Querido: the ninth state championship.
"Last season, we formed an excellent team, and the team stood out more than the individuals. The team was strong enough to win the championship. It's normal for things to change. Today, we have a different team, neither stronger nor weaker, and ready to succeed in the competition," said José Neto.
Regulation
In the qualifying phase of the sixth edition of Novo Basquete Brasil, the 17 teams will face each other, home-and-away, in a home-and-away format. After all these matches, the 12 top-ranked teams will advance to the playoffs.
The playoffs will be divided into round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, with the top four teams from the qualifying round bypassing the round of 16, advancing directly to the quarterfinals. All stages will be played as a best-of-five format, with the exception of the final, which will be a single game.
