The dream of playing basketball for Flamengo began to become a reality for eleven young men selected in the II National Basketball Tryout. The event, held on January 16, 17, and 18.01 at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium in Gávea, brought together 102 boys from across the country born between 1994 and 1998. The new players were evaluated by a committee comprised of the youth academy coordinator, Paulo Chupeta, and coaches Igor Melleti, Leonardo Bruno, and Marcus Hygino.

The last day of testing, this Wednesday (18.01), was attended by the captain of the adult team Marcelinho, center Caio Torres and wing/point guard Duda. In addition to interacting with the boys, they passed on tips and messages of support to those who were not approved.

"Everyone knows that to get where you want to go, you have to face difficulties. Today, some succeeded and others didn't. But everyone has to keep working and never give up, nor lose their willpower," said Marcelinho after the announcement of the successful candidates in the under-18 category.

One of those selected, Bento Salim Brigria, 17, faced a long journey from Boa Vista, in Roraima, to Rio de Janeiro, but he guarantees it was worth it.

"I was confident from the moment I left Roraima. It was worth it. Now I have to keep training to continue this dream," he said.

"I know I'll have to fight hard to get to the adult team, which is my dream, but I'll do my best to make sure everything works out," added Leonardo de Oliveira Almeida, 17 years old and 2,06m tall, who was also accepted.

The boys will now undergo new tests, this time with teams from their respective categories.

"We chose boys with characteristics that will be able to fill our gaps in the youth teams. The selection process brought together very high-quality boys and was a success. We hope to develop good players for the 2016 Olympics," said Paulo Chupeta.
