Pride of the Nation meets first opponent in the Campeonato Carioca
With Flamengo as the home team, the competition will be held at Maracanãzinho
By Helena Petry - inThe Maracanãzinho gymnasium has been confirmed as the venue for the State Basketball Championship. Hosted by "Mais Querido," the competition will run from September 28th to October 4th, with Flamengo facing Desportivo Atitude in its opening match. Tijuca, Niterói, and Municipal complete the competition.
With 14 consecutive titles, FlaBasquete is seeking its fifth Rio de Janeiro state championship. In total, the most successful state champion has won 45 trophies, almost 30 more than Vasco da Gama, in second place. For coach Gustavo De Conti, the tournament will serve as preparation for Mengão's biggest challenges this year.
"We've assembled a very competitive team this season. We hope to fight for the title in every competition, and we'll start with the Campeonato Carioca. This edition will feature five teams, and it's been a while since we've had that many teams. So the Campeonato Carioca is very important for us because, first, we want to defend Flamengo's long-standing dominance, and second, we're using it as a preseason for the rest of the year, where we have major competitions to compete in, like last season's Champions League final, the next one, and the NBB," said the coach. "We intend to use the championship for both of these purposes, but always with the pandemic in mind. We will strictly follow the doctors' guidelines and intend to take care of everyone involved and set a good example for society."
All athletes and professionals in the Carioca delegations and organization will be tested for COVID-19 by the Ingá General Hospital, the championship's master sponsor. The competition will be closed to the public but will be broadcast live on FlaTV.
