Despite the sadness of losing their third national championship to Universo/Brasília, Flamengo's board wasted no time and began restructuring the squad for the 2010/2011 season. As soon as he landed in Rio de Janeiro with the rest of the delegation, coach Paulo Chupeta met with the Flamengo directors at Gávea and agreed to stay with the club for another year. In charge of the adult basketball team since 2005, the coach expressed surprise at the speed of the negotiations, but was delighted with the agreement.
"I was actually surprised at how quickly everything was resolved, because last season João Batista and I were the last to get it done. But fortunately, the club's board understood that despite losing the title, we did a great job. I'm happy with the renewal and very excited to start planning for next season," explained coach Paulo Chupeta.
Although he prefers to keep the names of the reinforcements requested from the board confidential, the red-black coach reveals that he made only two appeals to the vice-president of Olympic Sports, Cristina Callou, and the basketball director, Arnaldo Szpiro, during the conversation.
"I'd rather not talk about reinforcements just yet, but I'd like to see the entire coaching staff stay on. I've also asked the board to make a huge effort to renovate the Gávea gymnasium. The HSBC Arena has a wonderful structure and we love playing there, but it would be great to go back to training in two shifts and close to our fans," said the red-and-black coach, who, starting this Wednesday, will be participating in a conference with all the coaches of Novo Basquete Brasil in Campinas.
One of those responsible for retaining the Flamengo coach, basketball director Arnaldo Szpiro, makes no secret of Flamengo's interest in at least two key reinforcements. However, the Flamengo director assures that the club's current priority lies elsewhere.
"Of course we'll strengthen our squad, but first we have to sit down and discuss renewing the contracts of the players who will remain at the club. Our plan is to retain a good portion of this year's squad, and we've already started doing that by keeping Chupeta. Even with all the problems we've faced throughout the season, we think he's improved a lot, done an excellent job, and led us to our third consecutive final."
