"I always knew I wanted to be a basketball player, but never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that one day I would play for Flamengo." That's how 16-year-old Vinícius Nunes, from Guarapoava, Paraná, celebrated his selection to join Flamengo's youth team. But Vinícius is just one of 29 lucky players chosen from 171 boys from across the country who signed up for the first national tryout held by the red-and-black club to compete in the pre-junior, junior, junior, and junior categories.

Vinícius didn't just impress the Flamengo coaches. Marcelinho, captain of Flamengo and the Brazilian national team, attended and attended the final day of the tryouts and also praised the potential of the winger/point guard, as well as other talents who were selected Thursday at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium.

"This initiative by Flamengo is really cool. The club should do this at least once a year and make this selection process a national benchmark. I thought it was really cool to participate and I saw several talented kids with the quality and potential to play for the club's youth teams," said Marcelinho.

Son of former basketball player Washington, who played for Tijuca and Verolme in Rio de Janeiro in the 90s, Vinícius was honest in saying that he didn't know about the selection process and participated by chance.

"I didn't even know about the tryouts, but a friend of mine saw it online and sent me an email so I could sign up. Unfortunately, he couldn't come, so I ended up coming alone. But everything went well. I tried to stay calm during the tests and I was chosen. Now I just have to hold back my excitement until I put on the Flamengo shirt," Vinícius explained.

Another standout among those selected was Marcelo Descahmps, 16 years old and 2,04m tall, from Rio Grande do Norte. Like Vinícius, who is registered with the Círculo Militar do Paraná, the center also previously played for a team in Natal and now hopes to fulfill his dream of playing for Flamengo.

Marcelo and Vinícius will be presented to Flamengo fans alongside the other 27 players chosen this Friday before the match between Flamengo and Bauru, at 20 pm, at Arena HSBC.
