The new era for Flamengo basketball has two important milestones: the arrival of coach Paulo Chupeta in 2005 and the hiring of Marcelinho Machado in 2007. It's true that the number 4 only arrived at Gávea thanks to two state championships in the previous two years – especially in 2005, when Flamengo defeated the overwhelming favorite Telemar. Since then, they've won five state titles, two national titles, and one continental title. Is it time for another triumph? Flamengo fans hope so.
After a difficult 2009-2010 season, which included only the Carioca Championship title, 2010-2011 brings a chance to make history. Flamengo is seeking its second South American Club League title at home, at the HSBC Arena, against rivals Brasília, against whom they have won the last three National Championships (winning two and losing one). For Marcelinho, this is the ideal time to get back to winning ways.
"The team has been strengthened significantly with the arrival of Bábby and Átila, who are providing a lot of strength in the paint. We've maintained the core of the team that has won many titles in recent years, so I see Flamengo on the right track to pursue this title. It would be great to leave the HSBC Arena with another title, in front of our fans, and we're going to fight hard for it," he assured.
The tradition of the most successful team in Rio de Janeiro basketball history, with 35 titles, goes back decades. The club even won ten state championships, from 1951 to 1960. Honoring this glorious past and dreaming of a future of new achievements, the red-and-blacks want not only the title this Sunday (November 28.11), but also the unprecedented League of the Americas and the third Brazilian title in four years.
"The team was built to win titles and has done so in recent years. We know we have the ability to seek victories in every competition we enter. The season is difficult, with many games in a row, and we have to take it one step at a time. Now we have Brasília, which is a strong team, a great opponent, and we're going to have a very difficult game," analyzed center Bábby.
