Red-blacks shine in winning the Super Four basketball tournament
Marcelinho, Caio Torres, Marquinhos and Benite represented Flamengo in the competition
By Media Relations - inWith four Flamengo players on the roster, the Brazilian basketball team won the Super Four title on Thursday night (28/06) in São Carlos (SP). The tournament is part of the preparation for the London Olympics in August. Flamengo was represented by Marcelinho, Caio Torres, and new signings for the 2012/2013 season, Marquinhos and Vitor Benite.
The red-and-black captain, Marcelinho, was the standout performer in the last match against Greece. The forward scored 22 points (out of 29 attempts) and led Brazil to a hard-fought 78-71 victory. Marquinhos also performed well, scoring 17 points.
Brazil had a 100% record in the competition. In its debut, it defeated New Zealand 73-49, with 14 points from Marquinhos and 10 from Marcelinho. Caio and Benite each scored five points. The team then defeated Nigeria 104-65. Marquinhos scored 15 points, Marcelinho 11, Caio 8, and Benite 6.
Flamengo also had a representative on the coaching staff. The club's new coach, José Neto, is an assistant to coach Ruben Magnano.
"It was good to play against a team that represents the level we'll encounter in London. Greece is a traditional team and has a good chance of securing a spot in the World Pre-Olympic Tournament. We haven't had much time to work on it, and yet we were consistent. We have a lot to improve on, but it was positive," Marcelinho analyzed.
Now, the Brazilian team will play a new friendly tournament in Buenos Aires, on July 5th and 6th, against Argentina and two other teams that are yet to be confirmed.
