Rubro-negros celebrate another basketball title

Accustomed to winning, Flamengo won its sixth state championship this Thursday

By - in

Flamengo overcame fatigue, defeated the well-prepared Tijuca Tênis Clube, and won its sixth state basketball championship. Another title for the red-and-black team, which has dominated Rio's sports scene in recent years. Since 2005, the Gávea team hasn't lost a trophy. But even though they're so accustomed to winning, Flamengo's players celebrate each victory as if it were their first. That's how it was this Thursday (16.12/XNUMX).

Embraced by the fans, who threw a huge party in the Tijuca gymnasium, the red-and-blacks couldn't hide their joy at closing the season with a title. Point guard Fred, the longest-tenured player, who has been with the club since 2006, is full of praise for the quality of the squad.

\

"This team was built to win titles, and every victory is special, whether it's a state, Brazilian, or South American title. I'm very pleased to be here at Flamengo, to win another trophy here, and this squad deserves it, this wonderful fan base deserves it. It's great to end the year with a title, to give even more motivation for next year," he said.

Point guard Duda, who returned from injury during the final, celebrated being able to play for the match and helping the team win its sixth title. According to Gávea's number 10, being a champion wearing the Sacred Mantle has a special flavor.

\

"Of course, it's different to be a champion with Flamengo. I'm very happy to have recovered in time to play and help the team win this trophy. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very good year for Flamengo; we ended up not winning the NBB or the South American League, but the State Championship came and we have to go for the titles in 2011," he added.

\

Flamengo is the most successful team in Rio de Janeiro basketball history. With this year's title, they now have 36 titles—20 more than Vasco, the second-most successful team.
