Under-14 and under-19 win the State Basketball Championship
Flamengo beats Tijuca Tênis Clube in both matches, at the opponent's home

Last Wednesday (29.04), Flamengo's under-14 and under-19 basketball teams beat Tijuca Tênis Clube, at their opponent's home, in the State Championship for the youth categories, which receive resources from Anjo da Guarda Rubro-Negro. Learn more about the project. Under-14 coach Igor Meletti also managed the youth team, as coach Chupeta recovers from severe sinusitis.
The under-14s returned to the court after their opening victory over Botafogo. In the second round, they secured another victory, this time over Tijuca, with an impressive 46-point lead: 78 to 32. Next Wednesday (May 06.05th), the team faces Jequiá at the Hélio Maurício gymnasium, located in Gávea's social headquarters. Meletti praised his squad and highlighted the team's collective play.
"The boys are playing well collectively, they're trying to do what I ask. The defense is strong and coming out on the counterattack. Speed is important for us since our team isn't very tall. On the other hand, we're quick and skillful. Yesterday, Magno, our number 6, scored 20 points, but he was playing as a team, with everyone focused on getting the freest teammate closer to the basket," he analyzed.
The U-19 team also won with a good margin, 69-46, but it wasn't as easy. Melleti explains that the team didn't start well in the match, but improved after his guidance at the end of the first half. "We opened up a 20-point lead at the beginning of the third quarter, but the first half was difficult. We started the first quarter trailing, and Tijuca closed it at 16-14. I talked to them before the start of the second quarter; we weren't attacking their defense, and the opponent was coming out on the counterattack. I asked them to push their inside game more, and we won the second quarter by 12 points. At halftime, we talked again, and the boys came back very well, especially on defense. We went up 10-0 in two minutes. The Infanto (U-17) boys are also doing very well in the Juvenil. Everyone who came on kept up the pace, and we managed to hold the lead until the end of the match," he stated.
