Flamengo's under-21 team maintained its 100% record in the Olympic Development League (LDO), the Brazilian championship for this category. The team led by coach Paulo Chupeta achieved its fourth consecutive victory in the competition by beating Tijuca 81 x 65, this Wednesday (12.10), in São Sebastião do Paraíso (MG). This Thursday (13.10), the team faces Joinville, at 14 pm.
After beating Pinheiros, Araraquara, and Limeira, Flamengo played a tight game with Tijuca until the third quarter. But in the final quarter, the red-and-black team settled in and opened up a lead, never again facing any further threats. Power forward Fred Duarte, known as Varejinho, once again led the game with 22 points and 20 rebounds (he's been the top scorer in every Flamengo game so far). Point guard Gegê was another standout, with 12 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and seven steals.
"The game was very tough, especially in the first half. But regional derbies are like that, always very close. In the third quarter, we managed to defend better, and our bench also played very well and helped us maintain our unbeaten run," said Gegê.
