In Argentine coach Gonzalo Garcia's debut as Flamengo coach, he defeated Joinville 85-78 on Friday (January 07.01) at Tijuca Tênis Clube in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil). The night was also special for star Marcelinho, who reached the 5-point mark in official matches for Flamengo. Flamengo now has six wins in seven games in the competition. Marcelinho himself was the top scorer of the match with 27 points.
On Sunday, the team heads to Ibarra, Ecuador, where they will compete in the first phase of the Liga das Américas. Flamengo, which has never advanced beyond the first phase of the tournament, is in Group C, which also includes Mavort (EQU), Quimsa (ARG), and Español (CHI). Their debut will be on the 11th, against the Argentine team. Their next NBB match will be on the 18th, against Uberlândia, in Uberlândia.
This Friday (January 07.01th), Flamengo took to the court with a different formation, with Hélio, Marcelinho, American David Teague (who started for the first time), Taichmann and Bábby. With pain in the adductor of his right thigh, Jefferson was rested. The game started very lively, with Flamengo launching many counterattacks. However, both teams made a lot of mistakes and the first quarter ended 15-9 for Flamengo.
In the second quarter, Flamengo took an 18-11 lead, but Joinville turned the game around to 22-26. A three-pointer from Teague and two free throws made by Hélio put the team from Gávea back in front, 27-26. At the end of the quarter, Marcelinho shone brightly, having already scored six points in the first quarter and, with another basket, reached the incredible milestone of 5 points in official matches for Flamengo. And with two more points from the star, Flamengo went into halftime leading 31-28.
"It's a great honor to reach this milestone. These milestones only reinforce my connection with Flamengo. It's increasingly rare for players to identify with a team, and I'm happy to be part of the club's history," said Marcelinho.
With a better offensive performance, Flamengo opened up a 10-point lead in the third quarter: 40 x 30 and the advantage only increased until closing the quarter at 59 x 47. Dominating the game, the team only needed to manage the advantage until the end: 85 x 78.
The new coach was happy with the result.
"Of course I'm very happy that we won. I really liked the defense in the first half, but the second half left something to be desired. I knew it would be a tense game, because the players don't know me, and I don't know them well yet. But the important thing is that everything went well," said Gonzalo.
Flamengo started with Hélio (9), Marcelinho (27), David Teague (10), Teichmann (10) and Bábby (9). Entered: Fred (1), Guto (4), Duda (10), Átilia (3) and Wagner (2).
