On the eve of its Carioca debut, Flamengo trained in full for the first time on Tuesday morning (21.09/XNUMX) at the HSBC Arena. The team had the return of point guard Marcelinho, who was with the Brazilian national team at the World Cup in Turkey, and power forwards Jefferson and Wagner, who won the unprecedented bronze medal with Brazil at the Military World Cup in Seoul, South Korea. Newly signed center Átila was officially integrated into the team.
The red-and-black team debuts in the Carioca next Friday (24.09), at 19:30 pm, against Iguaçu, in Tijuca. Next month, the team competes in the South American League and, starting in November, the NBB. Two friendlies are also scheduled in Vila Velha, on October 1st and 2nd, against CETAF.
"I had a few days off after the World Cup, which was important for me, but I was eager to get back to training. Flamengo has put together a very strong team and now we need to stay focused, which won't be difficult, since the whole team has the same focus: winning," said Marcelinho.
Center Átila, 27, was also happy to be part of one of the strongest teams in the country. With significant international experience under his belt, he believes he can be an important player on the team.
"Flamengo has great players and I hope to be able to contribute with the experience I had in international basketball," said Átila, who played in the US University League (Northern Iowa and Minnesota State), Chernomore in Bulgaria, and Tenerife in Spain.
Coach Paulo Chupeta praised the team that was assembled with the arrival of the 2,08m pivot.
"We put together a strong team, meeting last season's needs. We brought in two big men, Bábby (2,10m) and Átila (2,08m), as well as Guto, who is a homegrown talent, and Lamonte (American Kyle Lamonte) who is a fast player with good vision," said the coach.
