Flamengo fans and power forward Tony Washam met for the first time on Monday night (13.01). At Tijuca Tênis Clube, during halftime of the victory over Basquete Cearense, the American reinforcement was officially presented by Alexandre Póvoa, vice president of Olympic Sports, as a new member of José Neto's squad.
"The expectations of playing for Flamengo are very high. The team is coming off a national victory (NBB 5 title) and I hope to live up to it," said the American.
Alexandre Póvoa received his new jersey. Two interesting details: his name is Washam Jr. and his number is 14. This same number was worn by Oscar Schmidt, one of the greatest players in world basketball history, when he played for Mais Querido.
"I didn't know the number 14 belonged to such a great Brazilian sports idol. Now that I know, I'm honored and hope to live up to expectations. If I can come close to what he was for Flamengo, I'll be satisfied. I'll give my best," said the power forward.
At Flamengo, Washam has the chance to reunite with Jerome Meyinsse. The two played together last season for Regatas Corrientes in Argentina, where they won the national championship and the South American League.
"I've played with Jerome before and it's going to be great to be on the court with him again. We're friends off the court, so it's going to be an easy reunion," explained Tony Washam.
The red-and-black reinforcement, who has already trained with the group, has completed all medical examinations and is available to José Neto.
