Flamengo, the biggest winner in the history of Rio de Janeiro basketball, never tires of collecting titles in the sport. The team hasn't gone a year without winning a trophy since 2005. Starting in that season's State Championship, under Paulo Chupeta's leadership, a streak of unforgettable victories began, and it could see another chapter this Thursday night (12/16) against Tijuca, at the opponent's gymnasium, at 8 p.m.
Flamengo and Alvirubro face off in the second leg of the 2010 Campeonato Carioca finals. A Flamengo victory guarantees the team from Gávea its sixth consecutive state title, which would extend the second-longest winning streak by a team in the history of both Flamengo and the state championship itself. The longest is the ten-time red-and-black team, from 1951 to 1960. Furthermore, it would be the Mais Querido's 36th title, putting it 20 points ahead of rival Vasco, which has 16 and is the second-highest winner of the competition.
"Winning for Flamengo is different," said the team's captain, Marcelinho, who has already won three state titles, two national titles and one South American title, in addition to having won two more South American titles and one national title for Flamengo.
But the red-and-black team's mission won't be easy, and the proof is in the first match of the series. Tijuca played well and made things quite difficult, so much so that Flamengo's victory was only four points (79 to 75). But the players from the Gávea team, despite being tired from the marathon of games they've been playing, are confident of a more solid performance this Thursday.
"It will be a different game, for sure. We are very tired, very worn out, the marathon of games is complicated, but we will do our best to have a better performance on Thursday and to end this sequence with a flourish on Sunday, in the NBB", said point guard Helio, who scored 21 points in the first game of the final.
The Red-Black Nation is called to pack the Tijuca Tennis Club gymnasium. Tickets for the final cost R$10, but fans wearing Flamengo jerseys pay only R$5.
