Carolina Wilke presents paper at the World Congress on Science & Football, in AUS
Scientific Coordinator of CUIDAR is part of renowned sports science professionals at one of the most important conferences in the field
By Raiana Monteiro - inLast April, CUIDAR's Scientific Coordinator, Carolina Wilke, completed her doctorate through a partnership between the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Part of this project resulted in the work "Faster and Slower Post-Training Recovering: Multifactorial Classification of Recovery Profiles in Futsal." Her studies and the article culminated in a very special participation: presenting her work at the ninth edition of the World Congress on Science & Football, held in Melbourne, Australia, from June 4th to 7th.
"I submitted this work, which is part of my doctoral project, to Congress last year, and it was accepted as an oral presentation. This shows its relevance to the sports community," celebrates the CUIDAR professional.
In an exclusive interview with Flamengo's official website, Carolina Wilke shares her main experiences during the event and gives us an overview of the study presented.
Purpose of the study
"The study aimed to understand which athletes, after a workout, are ready to train again the next day, and which take two or three days, depending on the workout, to recover, for example. So this was a proposal, a format we developed, to look at athlete recovery from a multifactorial perspective, taking into account physiology, physical performance, and some perceptual—that is, psychological—factors. And to understand if, by putting all of this together, we could understand which athletes recover faster and which take longer to recover after a workout."
Presentation and Feedback
"It was really cool because it was very well received. It's a different approach to recovery analysis, and the feedback we received from researchers in England and Australia shows that perhaps analyses like these can really help us understand which athletes we really need to use additional recovery strategies on, like cryotherapy, massage, or perhaps even remove from training, and which athletes we can keep training without too much risk."
"It's still an idea, something more theoretical, but with some really cool practical potential. It's complex in theory, but with interesting practical application potential. Based on some of the club's results in terms of athlete monitoring, we'll try to start implementing or considering it at Flamengo."

“Regarding the connection with CUIDAR, I think that's the idea of looking at the athlete in a multifactorial way and helping them in the most specific way possible in relation to their needs.”
The complexity of the sports process
"An important message that stayed with me here at the Congress in several lectures that were given is the complexity of the sports process, which is nothing new to us, but the complexity of identifying, developing and maintaining high performance in athletes, the need for qualified and evidence-based professionals from different areas so that athletes have the best support and best possible performance; and within all this complexity, the need to simplify or make our actions as practical as possible."
"We need to know how to extract information from these analyses, know how to use these numbers out there, know how to use all the information we have on athletes in the most practical way possible. This, for me, is the message that remains. It also conveys that we are on the right path, with the principles that CUIDAR also brings. We still have a long way to go before we can reach our ideal, but the direction is right. From the complex, from the understandable, to the simple, to the practical."
Besides the During the World Congress on Science & Football, CUIDAR's Scientific Coordinator took advantage of her time in Australia to participate in a Symposium organized by the University of Technology in Sydney. The title, translated as "Relevant and Controversial Topics in High-Performance Sport," was "Relevant and Controversial Topics in High-Performance Sport." According to Carolina, the meeting was enriching.
"It was just a one-day conference, but with very prominent names in world sport, and with a very practical focus, which made clear the need for evidence-based practice and the development of science within high-performance sport - which again goes against the ideals that CUIDAR has been implementing at Flamengo," he concluded.
Speakers included the Director of Performance for the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots, the Sports Science Manager for AS Roma and the Dean of the Faculty of Sports Science at UTS.
