Wilson Batista, if he were still alive, would have turned 100 years old this Wednesday (July 03.07). He was one of the greatest composers in Brazilian history, author of classics such as "Bonde São Januário" and "Seu Oscar." But for the red-and-black fans, Wilson will always be remembered as the man who immortalized his love for the club in songs. He wrote five in total, making him the artist who wrote the most songs about the Most Beloved.
The most famous of the five is "Samba Rubro-Negro," from 1954. In the lyrics, Wilson Batista venerates the red-and-black stars of the 50s, as can be seen in this verse: "The Most Beloved has Rubens, Dequinha, and Pavão." The song was so successful that it was re-recorded in 1979 by João Nogueira, who adapted the verse to his time: "The Most Beloved has Zico, Adílio, and Adão."
