Andrade competes for an award from the newspaper O Globo
Economist Gabriel Buchmann, a Flamengo fan who died in Africa, is also competing in the World category.

Flamengo coach Andrade is one of three candidates for the "Make a Difference" Award, sponsored by the newspaper O Globo. The initiative, which is being held for the seventh time, aims to honor people who have helped transform the country, whether through their work or through their significant contributions. Andrade is competing in the Sports category, alongside Olympic and world champion swimmer Cesar Cielo and coach Dorival Junior, currently at the helm of Santos Futebol Clube.
Another candidate for the Red and Black team, this one in the World category, is economist Gabriel Buchmann, who died last year while hiking Mount Mulanje in Malawi, Africa. Gabriel had been traveling the world since July 31, 2008, and Malawi was the penultimate country on his itinerary. Buchmann, a master's student in economics at PUC-Rio, was researching anti-poverty measures for his doctorate. His nomination is up against diplomat Luiz Carlos Costa and chef Guilherme Costa.
For the economist's sister, Nina Buchmann, the family's campaign for the award isn't due to Gabriel's death. "It's because of his life, which deserves to be celebrated, remembered, and honored, because the determination to go to the poorest places in the world, with the aim of experiencing firsthand the consequences of 'global oblivion,' is a force present in few, but the will to change is in many. I've never met someone so concerned about others and open to others, concerned about poverty, human life, and nature," she says.
The nominations were made by journalists from each of Globo's editorial departments. Both Andrade and Buchmann can have their names supported through a popular vote on the newspaper's website.
