Before leading Flamengo's rise in the final stretch of the 2013 season, leading a discredited team to its third Copa do Brasil title, Jayme de Almeida Filho was a Flamengo player. In the 1970s, he was on the other side of the pitch, defending the Red and Black as a defender. Born on March 17th of the same year as Zico, they began their careers together in Flamengo's youth academy.

The Rio native played for Flamengo from 1973 to 1977, making 198 appearances for the Manto Sagrado, following in the footsteps of his father, the Flamengo captain of the team that won its first three-time state championship (1942-43-44). His father was also a coach and assistant coach at CRF in the 50s. As a coach, he won the 1953 Argentine Quadrangular Tournament. Sixty years later, last year, his son also won as Flamengo coach. His résumé includes the Campeonato Carioca (1974), his most important title for Flamengo and the first of his career, under Zico and Júnior; the Torneio Quadrangular de Goiás (1975); and the Torneio Quadrangular de Cuiabá (1976). As an individual achievement, in the 1974 Carioca final, in a 0-0 draw with Vasco, Jayme marked Roberto Dinamite, who had done nothing in that match. His most recent achievement, his second title as coach of the professional team, was the Guanabara Cup, with two rounds to spare, in the derby against Botafogo on March 09th.

In addition to working in the club's youth teams, he was an assistant coach for several Flamengo coaches: Junior (1993-94), Vanderlei Luxemburgo (2010-12), Joel Santana (2012), Dorival Júnior (2012-13), Jorginho (2013) and Mano Menezes (2013).
