Historic Red and Black Ball
Flamengo's official Carnival event brought together the club's stars and a huge crowd of revelers.

A Carnival ball to go down in the history of Flamengo and Rio de Janeiro. That's how the "Red and Black" ball, the club's official event, was on Saturday night (March 05.03th) at the Monte Líbano Club in Lagoa. Never before had a Carnival event brought together so many Flamengo stars, in addition, of course, to a huge and euphoric mass of fans and revelers. Everyone had plenty of reasons to celebrate. After all, 2011 began with the Guanabara Cup title, and shortly before the party, the team had beaten Olaria 3-2 in their debut in the Rio Cup, with their best performance of the year.
Animated by the Grande Rio samba school's drum section, the Samba pra Gente group, Cordão do Bola Preta, and MC Buchecha, the ball was attended by stars from the soccer fields, such as Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Thiago Neves, Leo Moura, Felipe, David Braz, among others; from the swimming pool, such as Olympic and world champion César Cielo and Nicholas Santos; from the courts, such as center Bábby, forward/center Jefferson, and American forward David Teague; and from gymnastics, such as Jade Barbosa. Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was also present, as well as past stars like Adílio, and future stars like the celebrated Negueba.
Wearing a beautiful black dress with red embroidery and a flower arrangement in her hair, President Patrícia Amorim couldn't hide her excitement.
"The players brought back the happiness of the Flamengo fans. It's only fair that they have a moment to enjoy it too," said the president, who joked about her "new" look. "I think I only wore a dress today and on my wedding day."
Amidst a veritable constellation of athletes, Ronaldinho Gaúcho was the absolute star. Radiating charm, he attracted thousands of flashes wherever he went. And he made a point of taking photos and chatting with everyone who approached. Even established athletes succumbed to the star's charisma. This was the case with swimmer César Cielo, who insisted on taking a picture, and basketball player Bábby, who invited the player to watch a Flamengo basketball game.
"I know he's a basketball fan, so I invited him. He told me he'll be at one of our games soon," said Bábby.
The highlight of the party was the crowning of Ronaldinho Gaúcho and actress Christine Fernandes as King and Queen of the ball, respectively.
"Hello Flamengo fans!", exclaimed the president. "We are very happy, even more so after today's (Saturday's) victory. I want to thank the players, coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, and all the athletes who are here making this wonderful celebration. Now let's present the King and Queen of the ball," Patricia cheered, before handing the sashes to the pair.
Making his debut at the Rio Carnival, César Cielo was delighted.
"It's my first Carnival in Rio and being at this Flamengo fan party is incredible. I'm just not going to risk dancing the samba, because I don't think anyone will really like it," joked the swimmer, who was also surrounded by fans eager for photos and autographs.
Full-back Léo Moura was another who didn't want to try his hand at samba.
"I'll leave that to Ronaldinho, he's got more talent than me," joked the star player, who was still celebrating the victory over Olaria. "First comes the work. And it's a good thing it was well done, because that way we can enjoy ourselves to the fullest," he concluded.
