After 23 years, Rio de Janeiro soccer once again has two representatives in the Copa Libertadores. However, the debuts of Fluminense and Flamengo next Wednesday have changed the complexion of today's derby, at 18:10 PM, at Maracanã, for the Taça Guanabara. With the red-and-blacks already qualified for the semifinals and the tricolors in the hunt for a spot, the clash between the clubs that invested the most in reinforcements for the season has taken on the air of a luxury friendly. Interestingly, considering these are historic rivals, no one is talking about the result with disdain.
"We're not going to Maracanã on Sunday at 18 p.m. to be tourists, are we?" asks the good-natured Joel Santana. "Whenever the flag is there, rivalry and history are at stake. They're not going to come to play around, and neither are we," warns the red-and-black coach.
Tricolores guarantee their place if they are not defeated
Even with a team packed with reserves, Fluminense faces an additional challenge in the derby. A win or draw will equal their 18-game unbeaten streak at Maracanã, repeating their campaign from the 70s. In this case, the Tricolor, which mathematically guarantees a spot if it doesn't lose by four goals and Macaé doesn't beat Boavista, also by a landslide, has a chance to break the record if it beats or draws Botafogo, its likely opponent in the Guanabara Cup semifinal.
With six wins in six games played in the State Championship, Flamengo also looks fondly at the numbers, but truly dreams of the morale boost they can produce. With virtually all of the starters rested, Joel Santana will take advantage of the match to scout players he intends to register for the Libertadores. Kleberson, Diego Tardelli, and Obina are confirmed. A victory today would be the 11th consecutive at the stadium:
"The group we're fielding is top-notch. Let's see if it lives up to expectations," warns Flamengo's coach.

TACNA, Peru. After 27 years, a new Mario Soto will cross Flamengo's path in the Copa Libertadores. This time, however, the opponent is a Peruvian raised in the jungle who claims to be peaceful.
In the 1981 final, Chilean defender Mario Soto, of Cobreloa, was Flamengo's nightmare. Accused of carrying a rock in his hands during the Santiago match, which Flamengo lost 1-0, and of assaulting several Flamengo fans, he received his comeuppance days later. In Montevideo, in the third leg of the finals, with the score at 2-0 for Flamengo, coach Carpeggiani brought Anselmo onto the field just to punch Mario Soto, sparking a massive brawl. If it were up to Peruvian Mario Soto, none of this would happen:
"I hope you don't confuse me. We're all different. Starting with the one I never met because I wasn't born there, he was Chilean, and I'm Peruvian. In a whole year, I've only received two yellow cards. I hardly commit fouls. I'm peaceful on the field and in life."
Indeed, that's what he seems to be, with his soft-spoken, simple, and gentle manner. Perhaps his personality was shaped in Moyobamba, a city 1.400 km from Lima, in the jungle, as they say in the country. Moyobamba is located in the Peruvian Amazon and is made up of small villages.
"There, you learn to have a calm life. The hard part is imagining that you'll become a soccer player. It's very difficult to be seen, it's very distant," said Soto, 20, the only player raised in the jungle in all of Peru's professional soccer.
With no hope in football after a knee injury suffered in a regional tournament, Soto left his village and went to Lima at age 18 to study. Until his older brother got him a tryout at Coronel Bolognesi.
- The game against Flamengo is the most important of my life - said Soto.
He's expected to start the game as a substitute. He dreams of going in and winning. Just when it seems like a Mario Soto with a more challenging tone will finally emerge, reality seems to call him back.

TACNA, Peru. In a training center consisting of two fields and a makeshift locker room, the survivor of the Alianza tragedy tries to overcome his latest challenge. Juan Reynoso struggles against the inexperience of a team with an average age of 22, the lack of funds, and the lack of infrastructure within the team and the city to lead Coronel Bolognesi to progress in the Copa Libertadores.
His first job is to make the team, discredited within its own country and city, believe in its strengths. To this end, he set an example.
"We can't be mediocre. They're young, but we want to reach the second round. Nacional (Uruguay) and Flamengo have the advantage of history. But we start by playing them at home. If we take advantage, we'll be fine," he said, before launching his candidacy. "Leading Peru is a priority for me. But right now, I'm only thinking about the club."
For someone given a second chance at life, Reynoso has the right to dream big. The club, on the other hand, was struggling to strengthen its ranks. It was up to the coach to leverage his influence in Mexico, where he worked for ten years. From there, he brought in defenders Ostersen and Cortez, as well as goalkeeper Alvarez. At least one of them already seems to believe Reynoso's words.
"Flamengo relies on technique. If we reduce the spaces, we'll make things difficult for them. We'll be alert to apply pressure," said Ostersen. "Of course, Flamengo has a lot of history. But we're at home. Let's respect them. After all, Brazil is the country that exports the most players. Those who are at Flamengo today will surely go to Europe in the future."
The team has three players from the Peruvian national team
Colonel Bolognesi's bets, however, seem to be focused on the three players from the Peruvian national team that lost a friendly to Bolivia in La Paz last Wednesday. In Tacna, on the days he scheduled interviews, he was seen running around the field after practice just to keep the press waiting for him.

Lima, December 8, 1987. With a team of young players, Alianza was the sensation of Peruvian football. That day, the Potrillos, as they were known, traveled to Pucallpa and defeated the local team 1-0. On the way back, the Peruvian Navy Fokker F-27, chartered by the club, crashed near the capital, killing all the players and coaching staff. Injured, five players did not travel. One of them was Juan Reynoso, now coach of Coronel Bolognesi, Flamengo's opponent on Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores.
Whatever the future holds for the team in its first Libertadores adventure, whatever the future holds for his coaching career, Juan Reynoso has reason to consider himself a survivor.
Just over a year earlier, the defender had begun his meteoric rise. Days after turning 16, he had broken into Alianza's first team and made his debut for the Peruvian national team in a friendly against China.
The shock of losing several of his teammates forced him to mature quickly. After the accident, the Peruvian championship was suspended until early 1988. When it resumed, Reynoso was part of a group made up of youth players and players on loan from Colo Colo, who, having experienced a similar tragedy, decided to show solidarity. Alianza lost the title to Universitario and would only win the Peruvian championship again ten years later, now without Reynoso.
Reynoso, who is in his first steps as a coach and has declined to discuss the tragedy, wore the Peruvian national team jersey 84 times. In the 90s, after a stint in Spanish football, he found his El Dorado in Mexico, where he played for eight years with Cruz Azul, becoming a symbol of the club, and two years with Necaxa, where he ended his career in 2004.

2007 was Jade Fernandes Barbosa's year. You're competing online for the title of best female gymnast in the world. How do you feel about this nomination?
JADE BARBOSA: I was surprised by the nomination. Just being among the best in the world makes me feel accomplished, and whatever comes next is a blessing. This is a very honorable competition for me and a first for Brazil. Who knows, maybe some forward-thinking company will come forward and want to partner with me? We're on the eve of the Olympics, right?
You were voted Brazil's best female athlete last year and were one of the country's sporting highlights in 2007. What is your assessment of last season?
JADE: I had a very good season, with many competitions, victories, and accomplishments. I gained experience and maturity to compete, and I was able to show that I was working hard and training hard to establish myself in the sport.
What's your training routine like for the World Cup in Qatar? Are you expected to introduce anything new?
JADE: My training routine is quite intense. My training is completely focused on the Olympics, and the competitions that take place until then will give us an idea of how we're doing in training. I'm not sure yet if I'll be performing anything new, but I should be performing the same dive I performed in my last competition in Foz do Iguaçu.
You're expected to participate in the Olympic torch relay, which will pass through Buenos Aires. What will that mean for you?
JADE: It's truly an honor to represent Brazil. I achieved what I consider to be a surprising result in the vote for the candidate (about 120 votes). I'm very happy with this affection and recognition.
Until the Olympics, what should you change in your preparation?
JADE: Over time, training becomes more intense and technical, and the pressure increases. To alleviate this situation, we have a team of professionals who take care of the physical and psychological aspects.
You'll arrive in Beijing as a major medal hopeful. Have you been thinking about that yet?
JADE: I try not to think about it. I've always been very demanding of myself, and now I'm even more so. That's why I train hard to get it right in competition.
Are you studying your opponents?
JADE: I always pay attention. In competitions, I like to see who's doing what, if there's anything new, and what each person's starting score is in their heats.
What do you think you have the best chance at? Floor? Individual all-around?
JADE: It's very difficult to pre-establish anything in gymnastics, but I think that besides these, I also have a chance in vault.
You just signed a contract with Flamengo. Did you ever fear you'd have to leave the club?
JADE: I was very happy. I was worried because I didn't want to leave Flamengo. When I heard about the possibility of going to another club, I said, "I don't even want to know, I'm not leaving Flamengo." Thankfully, everything worked out.
You're launching a website that will be the inspiration for a comic book character. What kind of message will you convey to fans?
JADE: With my website live, I'll be able to connect more closely with my fans. There, they'll find my entire personal and professional journey. I'll also have my store, where those interested can buy products from my brand, Jade Sport. My character (Jadinha) will de-serious the website and showcase the world of athletics, the culture of good health, and the sense of citizenship.

Obina wants to prove to coach Joel Santana that he deserves to be Flamengo's starter again

Tardelli didn't want to cause controversy and avoided promising goals, but his history with Fluminense is long, as it was against the team from Laranjeiras that he scored his first goal as a professional.
"I'm confident about the match, and my first goal for São Paulo was against them, but that doesn't mean I'm lucky, because I've also scored against other teams here in Rio. To truly become a Flamengo fan, Tardelli will have to score goals in addition to his clothes. That way, the expression "that's a player" will ring true in his ears.
