In simple terms, with just 12 points, Flamengo still has a long way to go to move up from 19th place in the Brazilian league. That won't happen even if they beat Náutico today at 18:10 PM, but their return to Maracanã, in a game that promises dramatic elements, could also be filled with euphoria and optimism. Flamengo is debuting defender Fábio Luciano, but everyone at the club believes the stadium is the biggest boost for the struggling team.
Upon returning to their home ground, Flamengo hopes to renew its strength with the fans' cry for redemption. Of the next 18 matches in the competition, only four will be away from Rio. The hope is that by playing in front of their home crowd, the team will escape the relegation zone, giving coach Joel Santana enough breathing room to reach the final round with the house more or less in order.
Joel begins purge in defense and midfield
Yesterday, Joel took a very obvious step regarding Flamengo's future under his leadership. While the board's attention was focused on the request for a stay of action on Souza's punishment, a decision that was to be announced today by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), the coach led a revealing training session at Ninho do Urubu. Without Obina and Paulo Sérgio, he started Leonardo up front and made changes in midfield.
The attack could change. Leonardo will be benched if the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) grants the request for a stay of execution for Souza, for whom Flamengo rejected a three-million-euro offer from a businessman seeking to place him in Spain (it also rejected a ten-million-euro offer for Renato Augusto).
Trying to get things in order at the back, Joel Santana, in addition to debuting Fábio Luciano, launched 20-year-old midfielder Rômulo. The coach also initiated a massive purge of the defense, officially removing defenders Moisés, Thiago, Irineu, and Helder, as well as Toró and Marcinho in the middle. They weren't even invited to hear the coach's pre-match talk. Ronaldo Angelim, whose contract was renewed until December 2008, was spared with honors.
"It seemed like he backed off in Curitiba, but that wasn't exactly the case. He knew Irineu was going to be substituted and said he had thigh pain to try to protect his teammate. Angelim is one of the few with the courage to stand up for a teammate. He did it last year and he's doing it again," said Kleber Leite, vice president of football.
It is in this climate, thinking about the future, but without leaving for tomorrow what he can do today, that Joel tries to get up from his last stumbles:

- I may not be 100% physically, but I'm 100% in my heart. It feels like I've been here for a year, not a week.
Rômulo, who has been at Flamengo since he was 13, agrees.

Joel changes Fla for duel against Náutico
Flamengo's situation in the Brasileirão isn't looking good. Coaching a team currently in second-to-last place in the tournament, Joel Santana decided to make changes. The two new additions will be midfielder Rômulo, promoted from the youth team, and Fábio Luciano, a defender who joined the team from German football. The Flamengo manager spoke about both players.
"I don't need to say much about Fábio Luciano. He's a player with immense experience, a leader, and a champion with every team he's played for. Rômulo is a great athlete, having played over 140 matches for Flamengo in the youth divisions. We have good young players, and I'll bet on them because I know they'll be starters for the team in the future," the coach said in an interview with Rádio Tupi.

The match will mark Flamengo's return to the city after nearly two months away. The team's last game in Rio was on June 16th, a draw against Internacional. After so long away from their team, it's time for the fans to turn out in large numbers to help Flamengo escape the relegation zone.
Fábio Luciano says he will play with his heart
Defender Fábio Luciano makes his debut today against Náutico, looking to address the defensive issues that have plagued him throughout this Brazilian Championship. He joined the club a week ago, but the goals conceded against Santos and Atlético-PR have prompted Joel Santana to bring forward the defender's first appearance for the red-and-black team.
Fábio Luciano trained yesterday afternoon at Ninho do Urubu, alongside his teammate, defender Ronaldo Angelim, but, still visibly out of rhythm, he made some mistakes in the training session, which ended 0-0.
"I had little time to prepare, but I'm working hard to help my teammates through this difficult time. I think we need everyone's strength and energy to get through this situation. I won't be 100% physically for the game, but I'll do everything I can to be 100% in my heart," said Fábio Luciano, adding that he's used to playing under pressure.
"I've been through this before. I won't lose sleep even if the pressure is on. I have a little anxiety, but I'm ready to play," he added.
Joel explained the reason for the athlete's early debut: "Fábio Luciano is an experienced player, a good defender, and a true leader. He's been instrumental in every team he's played for."
Flamengo's legal department on alert
Flamengo's legal department will have a lot of work to do in the coming days. Besides trying to secure a stay of execution so that striker Souza can play without having to play the remaining three matches of his suspension, there's also the situation surrounding coach Joel Santana, who will be tried next Wednesday at the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) for allegedly inciting his players to attack Santos players during last Sunday's match. He was indicted under Article 279 (Incitement to Physical Assault).
"I'll leave it in the hands of the club's lawyers. Michel Assef Filho will know how to handle it. I don't discuss these legal issues. On Wednesday, I'll go to the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) to explain what happened," explained the coach, who could face a suspension of one to two years.
Meanwhile, the case of striker Souza, who was suspended for five games, could take a turn for the worse. Prosecutors in the case have appealed the decision, and the player's sentence may be increased. The club's lawyer, however, believes Souza may even be able to play today.
"I haven't received confirmation yet; I'm waiting for a response from the president of the Superior Court of Justice (STJD). If he issues a ruling by game time, Souza will play," said Michel Assef Filho.
Fla hasn't lost to Náutico since 1984
If their head-to-head record against Náutico plays into their next match, Flamengo can feel confident. In Brazilian Championship matches, the Gávea team has 16 wins, compared to Timbu's just two.
Urubu's last defeat to the Pernambuco team was in April 1984, a match played at the opponents' home ground.
Flamengo takes on Náutico on Saturday at 18:10 PM at Maracanã Stadium. With a win, the Rio de Janeiro team will stay out of the relegation zone, but it will be breathing easier in its fight to avoid relegation to the second division.
Flamengo defeats Arsenal in the U-19 World Cup in Malaysia

Flamengo defeated Arsenal 2-1 this Friday in the Malaysian U-19 International Tournament, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. Flamengo drew 1-1 with Milan in their opening match. They now have four points and lead Group A, having scored one more goal than the Italian side in second place.

The turbulent times facing Flamengo are causing some changes to the team's routine. Vice-president of football Kleber Leite announced that Flamengo, in addition to remaining in permanent training camp, will travel to Teresópolis on Monday, specifically to Granja Comary, where the team will have a three-day preparation period for the big derby against Fluminense next Thursday.

After the nightmare of not being able to participate in the Rio 2007 Pan American Games, swimmer Mariana Brochado is already thinking about achieving the qualification for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She has already returned to training at the Flamengo pool.
According to the Rio native, she lost her spot at the Pan American Games after finishing fifth in the Maria Lenk Trophy in May of this year. The period during the Games was a very difficult time in her career. However, Mariana stated that this is now in the past.
"Now that the Pan American Games are over, I'm calmer and it's easier to start thinking about other things. Because I was experiencing it all without a choice, because after all, it was being held here in Rio, in the city where I live. So it was impossible not to think, because everywhere I looked, something reminded me and I immediately thought: Damn, I'm out! But that's okay, I participated in other ways at the Pan American Games, as a fan and as a commentator. And this matter is now a closed chapter in my life," said the 22-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, who will attempt to qualify for the Olympics in the same event that left her out of the Pan American Games, the 400m freestyle.
After a month and a half away from the pool due to a back injury, Mariana returned to training this week at Flamengo and said that within fifteen days she should be back to her normal training routine, five hours a day, to regain her physical and technical form.
Mariana Brochado already made history at the 2004 Athens Olympics, when Brazil's 4x200m freestyle relay secured a place in the final of the competition, which was considered a great result.

Rio - The R$200 watch that midfielder Rômulo wears on his wrist is worth far less to him than a spot in Flamengo's starting lineup today. Just as defender Fábio Luciano's debut at the Maracanã, the venue of his World Cup title with Corinthians, is priceless. Both players and forward Leonardo hope to give Flamengo a new look in the match against Náutico, starting at 18:10 PM.
Coach Joel Santana's three bets are gaining ground in a shift in philosophy that hasn't been working. Flamengo is abandoning its three-man defense today, instead deploying a 4-4-2 formation, with Renato Augusto alternating with Roger in the role of supporting Leonardo.

NEWS AT THE BANK
Thiago Salles, another player raised in Gávea, may also get his chance, as he'll be on the bench, waiting for his moment. Rômulo's moment has already arrived, and his R$200 watch leaves him with no doubts: there's still time for Flamengo to react in the Brasileirão, but not much. "I have to make decisions quickly. Time is short," admitted coach Joel Santana.
"I can't be solely responsible for the results"
Obina was the first to leave training yesterday at Ninho do Urubu. He got in his car and left, dismissed from training. But on Monday, he'll be with the group in Teresópolis, where the team will prepare for the match against Fluminense (on the 16th).
In an interview with Globoesporte.com, Obina expressed his regret: "I can't be solely to blame for the results. Talking about my weight is putting me at odds with the fans. And that's unacceptable."
Obina made his displeasure at being sidelined clear. He refuses to accept responsibility for the team's poor form: "The guys put me in, and I wanted to play. I scored the goal against América-RN, and everything was fine. Now, am I the only one to blame? I'll work to return to the team as soon as possible."
Despite his sadness, he will comply with the board's decision: "Of course I was upset. But I have no complaints. I will accept the decision and, as I said, continue working to get back to playing. My goal is to help Flamengo get out of this."
Romulo gets a new chance
At 20 years old, Rômulo isn't afraid to get burned in the fire that Flamengo finds itself in. Quite the opposite. He'd already been wandering around the professional ranks for some time, without establishing himself.
He sees today's opportunity as a new door opened for him by Joel Santana. "I was only 18, Cuca pushed me into the pros, but I injured my ankle," Rômulo recalled, looking back.
Looking back, the Flamengo midfielder also remembers his arrival at the club when he was just 13. And he recalls, not so long ago, winning the club's third state junior championship, defeating Vasco. "I've been at Flamengo since I was 13. I always say that with great pride," he said, smiling.
Despite his youth, Rômulo understands he has the potential to earn a spot in the much-discussed Flamengo defense: "That's not scaring me, no. I like playing like this. I don't like playing knowing no one is watching me. If God put this opportunity in my path, I have to seize it, with a lot of determination."
For those unfamiliar with him, he sells his game: "I'm a defensive player, but I also know how to get out there and play. I don't commit fouls. But in the juniors, if we lose, no one says anything. In the professional league, the world collapses with a defeat."
A return to a stage that brings back good memories
The stage couldn't be better for a debut. It was at the Maracanã that defender Fábio Luciano won the FIFA Club World Cup with Corinthians in 2000. Now, the mission is different: to hold on for the full 90 minutes, despite not having played in three months.
The player, who was playing for Cologne in Germany, assured that he will give his all for Flamengo tonight against Náutico. "I won't hold back, no. I won't hold back. I'll run as much as I can," said Fábio Luciano, unsure if he'll be able to handle the entire match.
For the debuting defender, his fitness level remains a concern, but the atmosphere at Flamengo is excellent. "I've only been here for a week, but I feel like I've been with these players for a year," said Fábio Luciano, confessing he's eager to make his debut.
Flamengo announces package of measures against relegation

Rio - Flamengo is stuck in the relegation zone of the Brasileirão, and to untie the knots preventing it from climbing the table, vice president of football Kléber Leite and coach Joel Santana announced a package of measures last Wednesday. Obina will be sidelined until he loses weight, the team will be confined to permanent training, and two players from the youth academy will be used.
1 - OBINA REMOVED
"Obina isn't going through a good time with his physical condition and is overweight. When he gets back to normal, he'll come back," said Kléber Leite. Joel Santana, Obina's former coach at Vitória, had a hand in the decision:
"I've been talking to him about his diet. We can't expose a precious gem like him, knowing he's not doing well." The decision is only surprising because Obina started both Flamengo games under Joel's management. What's worse: in addition to Souza, Paulo Sérgio, who received his third yellow card, will not be able to face Náutico on Saturday. Maxi Biancucci and Leonardo are Joel's options, and he also likes Renato Augusto to move up.
2 - CONCENTRATION
"The team will remain in permanent training until it gets out of this mess," decreed Kléber Leite, announcing that he is asking the CBF to release Granja Comary, in Teresópolis, so the team can leave Rio starting Monday. The decision was not well received by the players, who last slept at home a week ago. Training began yesterday, and since the team plays on Saturday, there will be an unprecedented day off so the players can spend Father's Day, Sunday, with their families.

Obina needs to lose more than 2 kilos

Rio - Obina's mission is almost as difficult as Flamengo's, stuck in the relegation zone: the striker needs to lose three percent of his body fat. According to a cursory assessment by fitness coach Ronaldo Torres, this should be the equivalent of 2,5 kilos.
"If Obina reaches 10,5% body fat, I'll be thrilled. But 12% would be acceptable for him, as he's at 15%," the coach said. Ronaldo joined Flamengo with Joel Santana and was present in the locker room when Obina was informed of his temporary absence: "He was shocked, but he understood," Ronaldo said.
According to the coach, Obina will continue training with the group, but will have to do special work to lose weight. He believes the player will need one to two weeks to reach his ideal weight. The rule doesn't just apply to him: "Soccer players can't be fat. That applies to everyone. I'll still look into other cases. Anyone with more than 11 percent body fat will need to train more."
In addition to working twice as hard, Obina will be monitored by nutritionist Sílvia. "She'll be part of the program. If he doesn't watch his diet, there's no point in training," Ronaldo said, planning a "moderate, long workout for the striker to burn fat."
Renato Augusto complains about the concentration regime

Rio - No one liked the training camp regime imposed by Flamengo's board and coaching staff. One of those who complained was Renato Augusto, who competed in the U-20 World Cup in Canada, which only made him miss his family even more.
"I traveled for a month with the U-20 team and only stayed home for two days. I wish I could spend a little more time with my mom and girlfriend. I really wanted to stay home, but what can I do? We can't talk about anything," the supporter complained.
Renato Augusto hasn't just been suffering from homesickness. He's been feeling more pressure than usual during the team's tough stretch.
"When the club was doing well, I was always doing well. Now, I see a lot of people saying I'm doing poorly. They should push the responsibility onto someone else. I have to take the criticism in stride," he lamented. "At Flamengo, you go from heaven to hell in 30 seconds, and from hell to heaven," the supporter added.
Although Palermo made inquiries to sign Renato Augusto, the player denied having received any offer from the Italian club.
"I've already discussed this with my agent, and nothing has come to my attention. My mind is on Flamengo. The game against Náutico will be a final for us," he said.

Sitting second-to-last in the standings with just 12 points, the Rio de Janeiro club hosts Náutico at 18:10 p.m. this Saturday at Maracanã. "By only doing physical exercise, the problem of lack of rhythm will persist. I'm a little upset, but I'll accept the decision as I always have," said the red-and-black fan favorite.
With Obina's teammate, Paulo Sérgio, receiving his third yellow card and Souza still serving a sentence imposed by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), Flamengo's attack will consist of Leonardo and Argentine Maximiliano Biancucchi. In defense, Flamengo will debut the experienced Fábio Luciano, brought in to try to solve the numerous problems in the sector, which also saw the departure of Irineu and Ronaldo Angelim.
At Náutico, coach Roberto Fernandes is banking on the team's attacking prowess to upset Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. In their last two Brazilian league matches, Timbu has scored nine goals. One of the standout strikers in the sector, Felipe, is dreaming of another three points away from home. "We're going to Rio de Janeiro respecting Flamengo, but knowing we can win like we did against América-RN last week, when we also won away from home," said the Timbu striker.
Despite winning recent matches, Náutico will have changes for this Saturday. Injured right-back Sidny was ruled out by doctors and will not play. As a result, defender Vágner is expected to be moved to the position, making room for the return of Toninho, who served a suspension last round. Prosecutor appeals Souza trial decision
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Souza will have to return to court to defend himself against the charges brought against him after the match against Grêmio. Joel is reported and could face a two-year suspension

He faces a two-year ban from football. The allegation is that the coach publicly incited a foul during the match against Santos, which violates Article 279 of the CBJD. Last Wednesday, the team left the risk group for the first time since the sixth round by defeating Figueirense 4-2, after beating América-RN 5-1, drawing with Fluminense 0-0 and defeating Santos 2-1.
For coach Roberto Fernandes, however, Náutico must be careful with arrogance. "The turnaround was only possible thanks to the players' dedication. As the Superior Court of Sports Justice's prosecutor's office appealed the STJD's First Disciplinary Committee's decision regarding the player's five-game suspension, the club is seeking permission to play the number 9.
Souza was tried last Monday, and the five-game ban—three, as two have already been served—was celebrated by lawyer Michel Assef Filho and the striker himself. However, the player had already been punished by the court for his expulsion in the match against Figueirense. Prosecutors are seeking a longer sentence, as the athlete is a repeat offender.

For the red card and the assault on midfielder Tcheco in the match against Grêmio (watch the video below), the striker had been charged under Article 253 (committing physical assault) and Article 254 (committing violent play) of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice. After a brief exchange of information, the five-match ban was confirmed by the president of the First Committee.
The president of the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), Rubens Approbato, has not yet considered the prosecutor's appeal. Flamengo will wait until the last minute to find out whether or not they can use the player.

After almost two months away from Maracanã, Flamengo will meet its fans again this Saturday, in the match against Náutico, at 18:10 pm, for the 19th round of the Brazilian Championship.
And the club's consensus is that the fans are crucial to keeping the team out of the relegation zone. Flamengo is second-to-last with 12 points. Their last match at the World's Biggest Stadium was on June 16, a 2-2 draw with Internacional. In the Brasileirão, they've played only three games at Maraca, and Flamengo has yet to win.
The match against Náutico is fraught with pressure. So much so that the team has entered a training camp, and the players will only be released once the team is out of the relegation zone, except on Father's Day, this Sunday.
On the field, coach Joel Santana will make some changes, but he hasn't yet revealed which ones. In Thursday's training session, he tested Fábio Luciano and Tiago Sales at center back. Ronaldo Angelim felt pain in his right thigh and did not participate in the training session.

Flamengo coach Joel Santana was indicted on Friday afternoon by Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) prosecutor Marcelo Jucá. The court has scheduled the coach's trial for next Wednesday. Joel was cited under Article 279 for publicly inciting the commission of an infraction—physical assault. He faces a suspension of up to two years.
Joel, however, tried not to create controversy over the matter, which began in the defeat (3-0) to Santos, at Vila Belmiro, where the coach ordered his players to beat Peixe's players.
"I'm not going to get involved in the matter. The case has been handed over to Flamengo's legal department. Now we'll see what will be decided," the coach said after training this Friday at Ninho do Urubu.

He explained that weight is just one of the areas Obina needs to improve in his performance.
The others would be, for example, impulse, strength and speed.
– He completed all the stages of recovery from surgery and would never have been released with six extra kilos.
He has this tendency to gain weight easily, but he will continue training normally and eating a balanced diet prepared by our nutritionist.
