Flamengo has priority for Tardelli, but has to pay US$1 million

TERESÓPOLIS. Flamengo has until Monday to sign striker Diego Tardelli and complete the squad for the State Championship and Libertadores. Yesterday, São Paulo gave Flamengo priority in acquiring the player, but set conditions. According to the São Paulo club's vice president of football, Carlos Augusto Barros e Silva, Flamengo wants a cash payment of US$1 million and a 20% interest in future negotiations.
- It's complicated, but we've had bigger problems before and I think we'll manage it - said Flamengo's vice president of football, Kleber Leite.
The director is awaiting a response to raise the requested amount and stated that the operation does not involve the sale of player rights.
If Flamengo doesn't meet the conditions by Monday, São Paulo will negotiate with other clubs. Santos and Palmeiras are interested.
Jokingly, Kleber, who intervened in the controversy between Souza and Tardelli, said that the matter has been resolved.
"Egídio will no longer be Souza's roommate. Suite 101 will be reserved for Tardelli and Souza," said the director, who had asked the players to be careful with their statements to the press the day before, after Souza criticized Tardelli.
Club takes action against FIFA against high altitude games
Also on Monday, Flamengo will take another step in its crusade against high-altitude matches. The club will contact FIFA, requesting that the South American Football Confederation comply with the Copa Libertadores's decision to ban matches at altitudes above 2.750 meters. The decision was made in December by FIFA's Executive Committee. According to the ruling, matches above this altitude could only be played if there was an acclimatization period.
Since there was no regulation of the decision, the South American Cup did not impose restrictions on high-altitude matches in the Libertadores. Flamengo wants to seek a FIFA ruling that applies to the tournament.
The club is awaiting a response from the Supreme Court of Sports Justice (STJD) regarding its request to convert part of Gavilán's suspension into food baskets. If the request is granted, the midfielder will be eligible to play in the State Championship debut.

They could have chosen any career path, but they decided to follow in their father's footsteps. They knew it wouldn't be easy, that comparisons would be inevitable, but they persisted anyway. It didn't take them long to realize that, in practice, it was even harder than they expected. Despite the setbacks, they continue to seek their place. And, once again, they're starting practically from scratch. At 24, midfielder Thiago Coimbra, Zico's son, is pursuing a spot on the Madureira team. A year younger, defensive midfielder Rodrigo Gama, Júnior's son, is trying his luck with Cardoso Moreira, one of the last teams in the Campeonato Carioca, which begins next weekend.
DNA both helps and hinders
Whether Thiago and Rodrigo will succeed this time, only time will tell. So far, they've attracted more attention for being the sons of former soccer stars than for their own accomplishments on the field. Despite spending little time with their parents as children, due to travel and training camps, they developed a taste for it. Neither Zico nor Júnior interfered with their sons' choices.
"My father doesn't interfere or give me advice. But he always supports me," said Thiago.
The two continue to butt heads, but despite the disappointments, they guarantee that they will only give up when they feel that it really is no longer possible.
"There are plenty of reasons for me to give it all up. But I want to be a soccer player. And as long as I believe in my dream, I'll keep trying," Rodrigo said over the phone, two days after leaving the comfort of his parents' home in Barra to live in a modest guesthouse in Cardoso Moreira, a city in northern Rio de Janeiro state that has the third-worst HDI (Human Development Index) in the state.
"I don't need football to live. I play because I love it, because I've always wanted to be a player. But if my career hasn't taken off by the age of 27, I'll look for something else to do," said Thiago.
Being the son of a former player is already a burden for any kid aspiring to a career in soccer. Imagine being the son of a star, a legend. Rodrigo and Thiago suffered because of their parents' behavior. But they also took advantage of the situation.
"Being Júnior's son is both a help and a hindrance. It helps because it opens doors. For example, when I learned that Charles Guerreiro had taken over at Cardoso Moreira, I asked my father to talk to him. But, on the other hand, there's always the expectation of playing as well as he did. It's a heavy burden. I just want to be a soccer player, not another Júnior," said Rodrigo, who, because of soccer, dropped out of college during his final year of his journalism degree. Before Cardoso Moreira, he played in the Minas Gerais Second Division for Valeriodoce.
Madureira is Thiago's fourth professional team. He started out at Flamengo, then played for Coritiba, and last year played for Portimonense in Portugal. Today, he has no doubt that he should have taken his first steps in football away from Gávea and his father's shadow.
"There will always be pressure being Zico's son, but at Flamengo it was too much. At Madureira, I'll have more peace of mind to work in peace. If I had started here, maybe things would have been easier for me," believes Thiago, who has a high school diploma.
Both Rodrigo and Thiago frequented Gávea as children. They even trained together in the CFZ youth teams. Now, for the first time, they'll be on opposing teams. On March 9th, Cardoso Moreira will host Madureira in the second round of the Rio Cup. It'll be Coimbra versus Gama.

Even though he was guaranteed a starting spot for the Carioca debut, striker Souza's week in Teresópolis was one of the most tumultuous since he arrived at Flamengo. First, there was the media spat with Diego Tardelli, a potential signing for the club this season, which also served as a dig at the board for not valuing those already in the squad.
But in addition to the board, he also needs to thank supporter Renato Augusto for staying at the club.
In recent days, striker Souza received a call from the vice president of football, Kleber Leite, and even had to rethink his idea of the club's value.
This is because Flamengo, which held only 25% of the player's economic rights, used a portion of the sale of 32% of Renato Augusto's rights to a sports marketing company (20%) and a group of investors (12%), thus managing to purchase an additional 35% of Souza's rights, eliminating the possibility of losing its number 9 to a European club, which would have paid US$4 million for 100% of the player. When Flamengo's preseason was planned, there were no friendlies or training matches scheduled, but thanks to suggestions from the club's coaching staff, the board took action and scheduled some preparatory matches. The Rubro-Negro's newest opponent will be Tupi-MG.
The teams will face each other today at 16pm at Granja Comary, but unlike last Thursday's training match, when the team led by Joel Santana thrashed the weak Nicaraguan team 5-0, the gates of the "home of the National Team" will not be open to the public.
Fitness coach Ronaldo Torres had said that for a team to get into shape, it would need at least four games and so it was very likely that the players would not enter the GB Cup at full steam, leaving it to warm up only when they faced Fluminense, on February 10th.

The relationship between Cristian and Flamengo isn't the most common considering the current reality of football. Despite only being at Gávea for about five months, the midfielder has developed a strong connection with the red-and-black colors and never tires of revealing his affection for the club. "Flamengo was everything in my life. It really changed my life, as well as my family's. I owe a lot to this club," the player declared.
At the end of the Brazilian Championship, Cristian received a great offer from Russian football. The deal was initially considered a done deal, but the midfielder's own desires were crucial when it came to making the decision.
"My position in this case was certainly decisive. I didn't want to leave. I still have a lot to achieve here. It's not the time for me to leave. That's why I asked to stay," he revealed.

Signed by Flamengo to secure experience for the Copa Libertadores da América, Paraguayan Gavilán is already offering advice to his new teammates. Having competed in the competition four times, the midfielder has plenty of experience to share with the group and make the Rubro-Negro a strong contender for the continental title.

Flamengo's signing of Paraguayan Gavilán almost fell through. The reason: early osteoarthritis in his right knee, diagnosed by the club's medical department. However, the situation was eventually resolved, and the midfielder signed a contract with the Gávea club until the end of the year.
After a week of training at his new "home," the player says the problem hasn't affected him at all. He claims he's keeping up with the rest of the group without any problems and hasn't felt any discomfort at the facility so far.
"I'm doing very well. I've been doing everything I've been asked to do without any pain. I'm doing my work normally and keeping up with my teammates. The only thing I'm feeling is muscle pain, which is common at the start of the season," explained the Paraguayan.
Despite still serving a 120-day sentence imposed by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), the midfielder remains calm. The punishment ends on February 13th.
"I try not to think about it. Flamengo's lawyers are working on the case, and I hope they can convert it into a payment for basic food baskets. But I just focus on work and always evolving here at the club," he emphasized.
Gavilán was punished while still at Grêmio, after punching Palmeiras midfielder Valdívia in the back during a Brazilian Championship match on October 6, 2007. The midfielder ended up being charged under Article 253 (assault) of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD).

Renato Augusto revealed, on Wednesday, all his dissatisfaction with the fact that Flamengo's board used parts of his economic rights to resolve four financial issues: the renewal for another five years of goalkeeper Bruno, the signing of a contract, for the same period, with midfielder Kleberson, the signing of defender Rodrigo and the acquisition of another 35% (he already had 25%) of the rights to striker Souza.
This Friday, the club's vice president of football, Kleber Leite, finally spoke publicly about the incident and sought to put things in perspective. The director admitted that he had to speak with the young supporter to "smooth things over," but emphasized that everything has been properly resolved.
"I spoke with Renato (Augusto) because I saw that he publicly expressed his discomfort. But I've already passed everything on to him and explained why we did this," Kleber added.
"Everyone has to understand the financial engineering we were forced to undertake. We did this because we had no other alternative. And this option enabled us to sign four players: Bruno (goalkeeper), Rodrigo (defender), Kleberson (defensive midfielder) and Souza (forward)," he explained.

Flamengo warned that it would not accept playing at altitudes above 2.750 meters in this year's Copa Libertadores. And it wasn't joking. Next Monday, the club will submit to FIFA a counterargument to CONMEBOL's decision to allow games in cities like Cuzco, La Paz, and Potosí.
Lawyer Michel Assef Filho drafted a document calling for the immediate implementation of the ruling by the organization that governs world football. FIFA recently established that, for medical reasons, international matches above 2.750 meters could only take place if there was a 21-day acclimatization period.
The top seed in Group 4, Rubro-Negro, has yet to confirm a game at altitude. However, this will happen if Cienciano-PER defeats Wanderers-URU in the knockout stage of the South American tournament. The Peruvian team plays its games in Cuzco, at 3.400 meters above sea level.

The final chapter of the Flamengo and Diego Tardelli saga is scheduled for next Monday. That day marks the deadline set by São Paulo for the club to meet its demands and purchase the player's economic rights. The São Paulo club wants US$1 million to release him. Santos is also eyeing the striker.

For the port's president, the invitation to participate in the competition demonstrates the club's importance on the world stage.

The car, painted in the club's colors, has the same characteristics as the other participating vehicles, with V12 engines supplied by Menard and producing 700 horsepower, capable of reaching over 320 km/h. Rather than being upset, Renato Augusto should be happy with the division of his economic rights into portions. At least that's the thinking of Flamengo's board.
After all, thanks to the sale of 32% of his rights—not 40% as previously reported—the club managed to substantially increase its equity. The latest acquisition was the purchase of an additional 35% of Souza's economic stake.
The transaction prevented the number 9 from leaving. Until this week, the club held 25% of the striker's economic rights. But with the money raised from Renato Augusto, they were able to increase their stake to 60% and increase the release clause from US$4 million to US$8 million.
There was an offer from a European club for the player and the interested party would only have to pay US$1 million (a quarter of the value of the old fine) to Flamengo to take him.
In addition to Souza, the negotiation that handed over 32% of Renato Augusto to a sports marketing company (20%) and a group of investors (12%) also guaranteed Rubro-Negro the permanence of three more athletes: Bruno (80% of economic rights), Kléberson (100%) and Rodrigo (loan for one year).

If Diego Tardelli can become a Flamengo player and already join the squad with an internal dispute - he exchanged barbs with Souza this week - on his resume, he won't be the only "privileged" one to have problems within a group of the club with the biggest fan base in Brazil.
In 1993, two on-field brawls occurred: one between Renato Gaúcho and Djalminha and the other involving Marquinhos and Marcelinho. Two years later, Sávio was assaulted by Romário in the locker room during halftime of a friendly match. In 2001, a feud between Edílson and Petkovic failed to deny the club its third state championship.
On July 13, 1993, the day Flamengo and Fluminense faced off in another Fla-Flu match—this one at Caio Martins Stadium—the most heated brawl between Flamengo players in recent memory. Renato Gaúcho became irritated with teammate Djalminha and attacked him, shoving him. The friction spelled the end for Djalminha at the club that had brought him to prominence. To make matters worse, Flamengo lost 3-2, with Renato scoring both goals.
That same year, but three months and three days later, fellow academy graduates Marcelinho Carioca (then simply Marcelinho) and Marquinhos exchanged blows. The result: another red-and-black defeat, this time a crushing 5-1 defeat to the modest Bragantino.
In 1995, the year the attack initially dubbed the best in the world by Flamengo fans was formed, two members of this Flamengo front line got into a fight while the club was on tour in Asia. During halftime of a friendly match in which Flamengo lost 3-2 to Kashiwa Reysol (JAP), Romário kicked Sávio, and a major crisis engulfed Gávea.
In 1993 and 1995, Flamengo finished without winning any titles. In 2001, however, Flamengo lifted two trophies—the third state championship and the Champions' Cup—but another feud was part of the Gávea club's daily routine. Edílson and Petkovic, the main protagonists in the third title win—the former scored two goals and the latter scored the decisive goal—were engaged in a public, largely unspoken, ego war. In this case, talent prevailed.

According to him, the club negotiated an additional 12% of the player's rights to a group of investors—in addition to the 20% previously negotiated with a sports marketing company.
- This allowed us to keep Bruno, hire Rodrigo and Kleberson and increase Souza's termination clause - says the director.
Previously, Flamengo held 25% of Souza's rights, and the release clause was US$4 million. Flamengo now holds 60% of the striker's rights, and the clause has increased to €8 million.

After a month and a half away from its fans, Flamengo felt the heat coming from the stands again this Thursday - albeit a very small one: around 300 fans attended the 5-0 thrashing of the Nicaraguan national team, in a training match played at Granja Comary, in Teresópolis.
Despite the small crowd, the friendly match sparked excitement among the Flamengo squad about returning to a packed Maracanã stadium. Striker Souza welcomed the Flamengo fans' presence at Granja Comary and said the celebration during training was just a warm-up for the season.
- That human warmth from the fans was important for us to already feel the atmosphere for the debut in Carioca - said the player.
Coach Joel Santana was another who relished the fans' memories. The coach revealed that, even during his vacation, he couldn't forget the nation's celebration during last year's Brazilian Championship.
- My birthday was cool, Christmas was beautiful and New Year was wonderful, but I really still missed the fans - he said.

The start of the season is usually the same story. Players return from vacation with a few extra pounds and needing to regain their fitness. Following their routine, Flamengo has been emphasizing physical training. This Friday morning saw another one.
Coach Joel Santana emphasizes that the important thing is to be physically and technically fit. According to him, the players remember last year's tactical approach.
"They know each other's style of play and each one tries to help. Our team is qualified and everyone has freedom," Joel analyzes.
Even midfielder Gavilán, who was almost left out of Flamengo due to the onset of osteoarthritis in his right knee, has given indications that he will be ready soon.
The Paraguayan has participated in all training sessions with the rest of the group.
"I'm happy because my physique is fine. I've been doing everything I've been told without any pain," says Gavilán.

- It was a nice Christmas, a nice New Year's Eve, but I missed my fans - he admitted.
Joel Santana returned to Flamengo in July 2007, following Ney Franco's dismissal. At the time, Flamengo was in the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship and, with an incredible comeback, finished in third place, earning the Natalino a place in the fans' hearts.
