Thirteen years ago, two children began training in Olympic gymnastics under the guidance of coach Renato Araújo. Neither of them imagined their partnership would be so successful. Since then, they have won numerous national titles and brought the name of Brazilian gymnastics (now called artistic gymnastics) to the international stage. The trio of Renato, Diego Hypólito, and Victor Rosa was so successful at Flamengo—the club where they began working together—that they made it onto the Brazilian team. After many success stories, they are now preparing to shine at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Diego and Victor have been training together since 1994. They've followed each other's progress, and together they were part of the group that surprised everyone at the Santo Domingo Pan American Games, when the Brazilians took the silver medal in the team competition. And this entire process took place under the watchful eye of Renato, who also coaches them on the national team.
"I've been following these boys for so long that I know each of their characteristics. Diego is better in the more specific events, in the apparatus competition. On the other hand, Victor's strength is in the individual all-around, which is a more comprehensive competition," said the Brazilian team coach.
Having spent so much time alongside Victor, Diego stated that the phase of them competing against each other is over. Now he only thinks about seeing his friend shine. "There's no rivalry.
