Obina, once again, in search of a comeback
Striker admits loss of space and Fla's board goes to São Paulo for Tardelli
OBINA ALONG WITH Joel Santana: striker admits he is behind Souza
His prestige with the fans remains unchanged. However, Obina sees the 2008 season starting less encouragingly than the previous one. If last year he was a regular starter, this year he sees Souza taking that spot. Meanwhile, Flamengo officials are heading to São Paulo today to try to sign Diego Tardelli. Apparently, to form a duo with Souza.
Just as in his first season at Flamengo, Obina once again finds himself facing the need for a comeback. After recovering in 2006 and becoming an idol with his goal in the Copa do Brasil final, he began 2007 as a regular starter. After scoring five goals in the first seven games of the year, he suffered a serious knee injury.
Club tries to avoid marathon to go to Peru
In the pre-season in Teresópolis, while fighting to regain his place, he suffered another injury, this time to his foot.
"I know that Souza is the starter today. I have to start all over again. In 2007, I had more reason to be hopeful," Obina said.
Yesterday, in Gávea, after undergoing treatment, he defended Souza in the controversy with Diego Tardelli, although he showed some embarrassment about the topic.
"Tardelli has to know what he's talking about. But suddenly, he didn't even speak and something distorted came out. Let's have a talk," said Obina. "I'm with Souza."
Today, the vice president of football, Kleber Leite, and the vice president of finance, José Carlos Dias, will meet with the president of São Paulo, Juvenal Juvêncio, to try to bring Diego Tardelli.
"There are some small edges, and I think we're very close. São Paulo needs to give in a little," Kleber said.
São Paulo wants $1 million upfront for Tardelli. Flamengo is trying to negotiate how to pay this amount.
Yesterday, only the players with high body fat percentages trained: Colace, Marcinho, Nílton, Léo Medeiros, and Gavilán. Defender Rodrigo, the most concerning player in this regard, did not attend, having been excused by the board for personal reasons.
The club is already planning a trip to Tacna, Peru, for its Copa Libertadores opener against Coronel Bolgnesi on February 13th. The club is trying to charter a direct flight to the city, leaving Rio on the 10th, right after the Fla-Flu State Championship match. If that doesn't work, it will have to fly to São Paulo on the 10th, travel to Lima on the 11th, and then fly to Tacna the day before the match.
CONMEBOL has called a meeting for the 22nd. The topic will be games at altitude. Flamengo promises to contact FIFA to avoid playing above 2.750 meters.
Today, the juniors face Goiás, at 19 pm, in the second phase of the São Paulo Cup.
The president of the STJD, Rubens Approbato, said that he did not receive Flamengo's request to convert part of the suspension imposed on midfielder Gavilán into basic food baskets.
A saltier State
Tickets will be increased by up to 50% and there will be no sales at the stadiums on the day of the game.
Mauricio Fonseca
In 2007, Brazil's official inflation rate was 4,46%. During this same period, Rio de Janeiro soccer regained its place on the national stage, attracting ever more fans to stadiums. Perhaps excited by this current phase, the club's directors saw the State Championship, which begins next weekend, as an opportunity to shore up the clubs' always-strained finances. And they overdid it. Ticket prices, which vary depending on the stadium, were increased by up to 50% compared to last year's State Championship.
At Maracanã, where Flamengo and Fluminense will play, in addition to the derbies, fans will pay R$20 for blue seats, R$30 for the green and yellow stands, R$40 for the white stands, and R$120 for the special seats. In 2007, the stands cost R$20 for games against the smaller teams and R$30 for the derbies—there was no color differentiation.
The current rates will apply to all games at the stadium, regardless of whether it's a derby or not. And this year, with more teams, the big teams will play 12 games against the smaller teams.
In the semifinals and finals, tickets will be more expensive. Blue seats will go up to R$30, green and yellow bleachers will go up to R$40, white bleachers will go up to R$50, and premium seats will cost R$150.
Vasco will sell a cheaper package
Flamengo fans, who put on a show in the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship, will pay more to watch the team in the Carioca. Last year, blue seats cost R$15; the bleachers behind the goals cost R$20; the white bleachers cost R$25; and the special seats cost R$100. In other words, fans will pay more to see Flamengo face debutant Cardoso Moreira than they paid to watch, for example, the match against São Paulo.
"It's been a long time since Flamengo started a season so well, so organized. I'm sure the fans' mobilization will continue in the State Championship," says Kleber Leite, Flamengo's vice president of football, believing that the increase won't drive the red-and-black fans away from Maracanã.
Vasco, which will play 12 games at São Januário, has decided to run a promotion to attract fans to matches against the smaller teams. Tickets will cost R$20, but those who purchase a package for all games at the stadium will pay R$96, which represents R$8 per match. Fans who opt for the promotion can pay in three installments of R$32.
"Vasco spends around R$30 per game at São Januário Stadium. By purchasing the package, fans not only get a good discount but also significantly help the club, as game-day expenses are significantly reduced," explains Ricardo Vasconcelos, special advisor to the club's president.
At Engenhão, where Botafogo will host its home matches against the smaller teams, there are three types of tickets. Those granting access to the lower stands will cost R$40 (in the middle) and R$20 (behind the goal). To watch the game from the upper stands, the black and white team will pay R$30.
But fans will also benefit. To facilitate public access, it was decided that there will be no ticket sales at stadium ticket offices on match days. The intention is to ensure that only fans with tickets have access to the stadium. Street vendors will not be permitted, and illegal parking will be strictly enforced. This was the case at the Pan American Games, and the result was excellent.
But even those who wait until the day of the game will be able to buy tickets. The Federation will set up ticket booths around the stadiums. The locations will be decided at a meeting today. However, it is already known that, for games at Maracanã, the booths will be located at Praça da Bandeira, Praça Varnhagem, and a third location yet to be announced.
For matches at São Januário, the chosen venue was São Cristóvão Field. Botafogo's board of directors still doesn't know where the game-day ticket sales will be held at Engenhão.

Boys take on Goiás in the São Paulo Cup
The Gávea youth team returns to the field today at 19 p.m. in Piracicaba for the second round of the São Paulo Junior Football Cup. Their opponent this time is Goiás, who finished second in Group R in the first round of the competition. If Flamengo triumphs, they will face the winner of Internacional and Juventude in the round of 14, who will face off at XNUMX p.m. in Guarulhos.
Without forward Paulo Sérgio (suspended for a second yellow card) and defender Fabrício (sent off in the last match), coach Rogério will be forced to field a new starting lineup for the match later today. Flamengo will field Marcelo Carné, Michel, Lucas, Michel Pereira, and Jobson; Lenon, Erick Flores, Wellington Peca, and Renan; Bruno Paulo and Pedro Beda.
Joel doesn't know who to put in the middle
The preseason in Teresópolis is over, and Joel Santana still hasn't decided who will be Flamengo's starting midfielder. This question arose for the coach because, despite having stated that he wants to start this season with the same team he finished last season with, the recently repatriated Jônatas has been very popular.
Of the players the team has in this position, Jaílton and Jônatas are slightly ahead of the rest. The former finished last season as a starter and has been used for this reason. The latter, in addition to having played with Joel in 2005, has replaced Jaílton in almost every training match, suggesting that the competition will likely be between the two.
"I know the competition is tough and Jônatas is a great player, but I'm working hard to stay in the starting lineup. I'm sure Joel will field the best player for Flamengo. I finished the year playing. I'll do everything I can to start and finish this year as a starter too," said Jaílton, who, despite having a strong finish to the 2007 season, still hasn't won over Flamengo fans.
If Jônatas is Joel's choice, Flamengo's defensive system will undergo a slight modification. Jaílton, despite being a defensive midfielder, has been operating as a third defender on the right, allowing Fábio Luciano to play as a defensive midfielder.
When Jônatas comes into the team, despite sometimes also playing as a third man in defense, he positions himself between the defenders.\ And when he attacks, he has complete freedom to start creating the team's plays.\
The soap opera drags on
Flamengo has not announced the signing of Diego Tardelli. Kléber Leite should resolve everything today.

Striker Diego Tardelli could be signed by Flamengo today
Fans hoping for an end to the saga surrounding striker Diego Tardelli's signing last night were once again disappointed. The drama, which began last year, has gained another chapter. Negotiations that were supposed to conclude yesterday, the deadline São Paulo gave Flamengo for expressing interest in the player, ended up having to be postponed until today.
Football vice-president Kleber Leite, who last Friday assured that everything would be resolved last night, did not want to give much explanation about the case, but assured that it will not go beyond today.
"The matter was left for tomorrow (today) afternoon, in São Paulo," said Kleber Leite.
São Paulo's vice-president, Marcos Aurélio Cunha, explained that this delay in finalizing the negotiation is normal.
"I wasn't able to speak to the president today (yesterday) and so I don't know what happened, but in a relationship between clubs this is normal. Our president was returning from the countryside, maybe that's why the meeting was postponed," he said.
Even though he hasn't been hired, Diego Tardelli continues to cause outrage at Gávea. Yesterday, it was Obina's turn to criticize him. Tardelli recently argued with Souza in the press.
"Diego has to know what he's saying, he has to be careful because our group is already close-knit. I told Souza that we'll always be together. He's going to prove he's a great striker, and I'll help him do that. We're part of a group of friends, and suddenly one or another comes along and says something they shouldn't," Obina vented.
Look at the ticket there!
Tickets for Flamengo vs. Boavista in the Carioca Championship opener are expected to go on sale tomorrow. Today, board members will meet with the Rio de Janeiro federation to outline ticket sales plans.
Left-back Juan warned that Flamengo is not the favorite and that anything can happen on the field, but the player is betting on the group's unity to have a good campaign in this competition.
Fabio Luciano guarantees that there are no 'cliques' in the Fla group
Defender Fábio Luciano arrived at Flamengo with the 2006 Brazilian Championship already underway. After a glorious end to the year, the defender asserts that the only changes that occurred were positive.
According to Flamengo's sheriff, despite the arrival of some new players, the atmosphere at the Gévea club remains peaceful and friendly. The player assured that there is no possibility of any kind of rift within the squad.
"We're just starting out, and we'll see how the group performs. But the group is stronger, and those who arrived have a lot of quality. Everyone wants more than last year, wanting to have a wonderful year at Flamengo. There won't be any cliques. We're not going to let that happen under any circumstances. There won't be any other groups, just one Flamengo group, with 30 players. There has to be respect and friendship. We know that in some games we'll have very high-quality players on the bench, ready to help us," the defender told Rádio Bandeirantes.
Joel says he is impressed with Kléberson
Wallace Teixeira
Coach Joel Santana already has his 'apple of his eye' in 2008. If Ibson was Flamengo's main player last season, this year everything indicates that Joel's favorite will be midfielder Kléberson (pictured). The Rubro-Negro coach was full of praise for the midfielder, who has been standing out in training and in group matches.
"Kléberson is impressive, he has a lot of quality. As I always say, he plays with one beat. He's impressive because of the simplicity with which he plays and how he carries himself. He doesn't even seem like he's a world champion. It will be great for us to have him here at Flamengo," Joel Santana told Rádio Bandeirantes.
The coach already expects many challenges in 2008, but guarantees that the team will remain offensive against any opponent. Joel stated that the team has enough quality to score and attack. He assured that despite playing with three defensive midfielders, they have an extremely attacking midfield.
"Our opponents like to counterattack against us. But our team is skilled, not a team built just to score. In 2005, I formed the team with three defensive midfielders. One was Diego Souza, who's already almost a striker, and the other is Jônatas, who has a lot of quality. This year, I put in Jailton, Cristian, and Ibson. Only Jailton can really score. The other two get forward all the time, especially Ibson," analyzed Joel Santana, who was criticized in 2007 when he fielded three defensive midfielders, which ended up working out well.
Diego Hypólito rehearses the golden jump
The Brazilian gymnast trains hard to confirm her favoritism at the Beijing Olympics.

With reserve Victor Rosa, champion Diego Hypólito trains on the pommel horse in Gávea
Unlike most Brazilian athletes, who are fighting for an Olympic spot, gymnast Diego Hypólito already entered 2008 with a guaranteed place in the Chinese Games. Less than seven months before the start of the competition, he is rehearsing his first steps toward making a splash in Beijing at the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.
And he doesn't dream small: he wants to perform, in front of the demanding judges who will be at the National Indoor Stadium, the most perfect jump the sport has ever seen.
Diego doesn't deny his status as a favorite to win gold on the floor and vault. So much so that he intends to go to the Games in a position to climb to the top of the podium. And to that end, he's been training hard on both apparatus. While he's completely confident on the floor, on the vault, he believes that by August he'll be able to perform the so-called "perfect vault," which consists of three 360-degree turns and one 180-degree somersault. Something no gymnast has ever accomplished.
"I try about 13 times a day. For now, it's been very difficult, but by the Olympics, I'll be much better," said the Brazilian, who, if he truly pulls off this dive in Beijing, will achieve a starting score of 17. The highest in history belongs to Diego himself: he scored 16.9 at the Paris World Cup last year. But such boldness ended up costing him dearly. He suffered an injury to his right foot and had to sit out for a few weeks. "At the time, I wasn't ready. But this time will be different. I'll prepare myself."
Tranquility\ While Diego admits he still needs to improve technically, he's already ready psychologically. He's calm and says he doesn't feel pressure from the likely pressure from the fans. "I know they're expecting gold. But I see this situation positively. I've medaled in three consecutive World Championships (two gold and one silver). This gives me confidence. If they're expecting gold from me, it's because they believe in my work."\
Three strong competitors stand in the gymnast's way: Romanian Marian Dragulesco, China's Wei Yan, and Spain's Gervasio Deffer. The one who worries him most is the Chinese, a bit of an unknown for the Brazilian. "Artistic gymnastics is very predictable. I already know Dragulescu's routine, for example, and I know it won't change. That's what sets me apart. I have an ease in executing different techniques and, therefore, changing my routines. But the Chinese is new. I don't know what to expect from him."

Fla: Cool head to play in the Libertadores
A psychologist will talk to players to guide them on how to overcome bullying.
Janir Junior
Rio - To use the expression "go headfirst" into the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo will first have to address it. Psychologist Paulo Ribeiro takes the field, already having guidelines to guide the players, especially after the incident in Sunday's training match, when Toró was allegedly called a "monkey" by Uruguayan Fernando Caballero. The training session ended up being a scene of harsh plays, arguments, and shoving.
Paulo Ribeiro emphasizes that it's important to absorb an action well to avoid a reaction, and explains how. "When someone suffers a personal attack that affects their honor or morals, they need to be superior and evolved. The attacker is inferior and uses tactics like insults to create a confrontation. From there, a series of things can happen that wouldn't be desirable for the person in the right, and they can end up losing it," explains the psychologist.
Yesterday, a day off for most of the players, Paulo Ribeiro hadn't yet spoken to Toró about the disagreement with the Uruguayan. But the psychologist made predictions about problems that will certainly arise during the Libertadores Cup. "We need to be very careful with our reaction. We could have players sent off and also suffer serious injuries. The losses could be significant. We have to be careful," he emphasizes.
Shortly after the incident during Sunday's training match, Joel Santana announced that he would address the issue with the players. "I'll talk to everyone. They have to keep their heads on straight and not get upset by these provocations. This is what the Copa Libertadores is all about," the coach declared.
Paulo Ribeiro also said that we must ignore the provocations, which will be even more pronounced in games away from Maracanã. "We have to do everything we can to avoid being involved," he said.
After 10 days of preseason training in Teresópolis, the players had a day off yesterday to clear their heads and rest their legs, with the exception of Gavilán, Colace, Marcinho, Léo Medeiros, and Nílton, who were in Gávea for physical exercise. The players, who still need to reduce their body fat percentage, ran for 50 minutes. Obina trained separately from the squad and did strength training.
The team debuts in the State Championship on Sunday afternoon (16 p.m.), against Boavista. If there are no injury problems, Flamengo should take to the field with the same look as in 2007: Bruno, Leonardo Moura, Fábio Luciano, Ronaldo Angelim and Juan; Jaílton, Cristian, Toró and Íbson; Renato Augusto and Souza.
Today, the definition about Tardelli
The decision on Diego Tardelli's signing was postponed from yesterday to today, and according to Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, the deal will be sealed with the signing of the contract. Today, the director will travel to São Paulo to meet with Flamengo's president, Juvenal Juvêncio, to present Flamengo's conditions for paying US$1 million and 20% to São Paulo in a future negotiation. "We've made progress. Now, we need to iron out the kinks. But I won't be confident until the contract is signed. Only what's written counts," said Kléber.
São Paulo had favored the Rubro-Negro until yesterday, but Santos is also interested in Diego Tardelli. "This meeting with Juvenal will definitely determine the outcome," Kléber added.
After the exchange of barbs between Tardelli and Souza, it was now striker Obina's turn to weigh in on the controversy. "Diego has to know what to say, as he could upset the group, which is very close-knit. If he comes, it will be to help. We'll talk to him so he understands that adapting here is difficult. Souza and I are under pressure from the fans," said Obina.
CLUB STILL FIGHTS AGAINST ALTITUDE
On the 22nd, a CONMEBOL executive committee will once again examine the issue of banning matches at altitudes above 2.750 meters in this year's Copa Libertadores. Initially, the organization authorized matches in cities such as Cuzco, La Paz, and Potosí. But Flamengo drafted a document requesting the immediate application of FIFA's ruling for international matches, attempting to veto the altitude.
The club's efforts for the Libertadores Cup don't stop there, even extending beyond the field. On Sunday, the last day of preseason training at Granja Comary in Teresópolis, a bus carried members of the fiscal and finance committees, social and amateur departments, and others to watch the training match in Serra. The red-and-black caravan served to smooth over differences between leaders from different departments.
Vice-president Kléber Leite is confident the club will have a good year and hopes to win everything it competes for in the 2008 season. "Our preparation was very good, and the goal is to win the State Championship, the Brazilian Championship, and the Libertadores. It will be a year of titles," Kleber told Rádio Tupi.
Flamengo debuts with Souza and Renato Augusto in Carioca
Rio - The red-and-black attack has already been decided for its debut in the 2008 State Championship, this Sunday, against Boavista. Coach Joel Santana will field Souza alongside Renato Augusto, even though the midfielder has already expressed a desire to play further back.
Striker Obina remains on the bench. Flamengo has until Monday night to decide whether to sign São Paulo striker Diego Tardelli for approximately R$1 million.
Obina welcomes Diego's arrival, but the fans' favorite warns that the team already formed must be respected. In a radio interview, Obina denied that he could be further removed from the starting lineup with Tardelli's arrival.
"I don't worry. I have to focus on who is here today," he warned.
Regarding the controversy with Souza, Obina put a damper on things, but then added another dig. "Tardelli needs to know what he's talking about. Souza and I are very close. We know the difficulties we've been through. When we win a starting spot and someone comes along and says something wrong..." said the striker, who later hushed up the incident.
"Sometimes he doesn't even speak. If he comes, it will be to help. Here you have to adapt to the team, to the fans. Souza and I have already been through this, and if Diego comes, he will go through it too."
Juan: work was done to play both competitions
Rio - Flamengo full-back Juan assured this Monday that the team will not prioritize any competition this season. According to the player, the team has worked hard to compete in both competitions. "I think we have to be able to do both. It will depend on the sequence of games and how the team feels," Juan told Rádio Tupi.
Midfielder Íbson, a club recruit, said the work done at Granja Comary in Teresópolis was excellent, and that the follow-up at Gávea will be even better. "We'll prepare even more, hone our fundamentals. In 2005, the season was very short, and we ended up being surprised. The situation is different now. Coach Ronaldo understands each player's needs."
Juan also stated that Flamengo and Fluminense aren't favorites, given their signings and the strength of their squads. "We'll see on the field. Which team is better. Then we can say if there's a favorite. It's too early now."

Meeting to define Diego Tardelli's future is postponed\ Marcelo Belpiede\
São Paulo (SP) - Striker Diego Tardelli will have to wait another day to learn about his future for the 2008 season. The meeting scheduled for this Monday between São Paulo and Flamengo has been postponed. The Rio de Janeiro team is trying to sign Tardelli for the Copa Libertadores. São Paulo, on the other hand, is willing to release the player, as long as it is a permanent deal. Flamengo is reportedly demanding a fee of around US$1 million.
"The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday). I'm going to São Paulo to speak with president Juvenal Juvêncio. For now, we don't have any news," said Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, in an interview with GE.Net.
Unsure of his future, Diego Tardelli continues training normally at the Barra Funda training center. In São Paulo's first training match of the season against São Bernardo, he was only used in the second half with the reserve team.
Besides Diego Tardelli, another São Paulo striker is experiencing a period of uncertainty. Striker Aloísio is considering an offer to play in the United Arab Emirates in 2008.
Board asks Conmebol for a response on FIFA veto\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Altitude continues to be a concern for Flamengo's management. Off the field, the board is awaiting a response from CONMEBOL this week, hoping the organization will adopt the measure requested by FIFA, banning matches at altitudes above 2.750 meters. Last year, Flamengo suffered after facing Real Potosí at an altitude of over 3.000 meters. On that occasion, many Flamengo players fell ill during the 2-2 draw.
Since Peruvian Cienciano, currently in the pre-qualifying stage, could be part of Flamengo's group, Flamengo's directors are apprehensive. They fear they'll have to play at 3.400 meters above sea level.
Obina downplays 'extra pounds' but performs special work\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Flamengo left Teresópolis last Sunday and won't return to training until Tuesday, when they begin the week of training before their Campeonato Carioca debut on Sunday against Boavista at Maracanã. While most of the squad had Monday off, some players had to report to Gávea to work on their fitness. The standout performer was Obina, who once again has to battle the weight. The striker worked out at the gym, as he still needs to lose weight and has to recover from a blow to his foot during preseason at Granja Comary in Teresópolis. A favorite of the Flamengo fans, the center forward downplayed the fact that he once again showed up a few pounds overweight.
"Coming back overweight is normal. We overdo it on vacation. But now I'm trying to get back to my best shape as quickly as possible, so I can be in the coach's hands. I want to make myself available soon to help Flamengo with my goals," said Obina, who plans to train with the ball this Tuesday.
Besides him, five other athletes were at Gávea. For almost an hour, Gavilán, Hugo Colace, Marcinho, Léo Medeiros, and Nilton ran around the field.
Joel rules out radical changes to the starting lineup\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Flamengo's board invested heavily to build a competitive team in 2008, the year the club will once again compete in the Copa Libertadores. But despite the arrival of key players, at least initially, coach Joel Santana is expected to start the season with a squad made up of players who competed in last year's Brazilian Championship. "We can't throw away four months of work. These guys went from 12 points to finishing the Brazilian Championship with 61 points, earning a spot in the Libertadores," said the manager. Furthermore, of the reinforcements Flamengo has signed so far, defensive midfielder Gavilán and midfielder Kléberson will only be able to debut in February, as they are still serving suspensions imposed by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) and FIFA, respectively.
In the two training matches he coached the first team at Granja Comary in Teresópolis, Joel Santana fielded the following lineup: Bruno; Leonardo Moura, Fabio Luciano, Angelim, and Juan; Jailton, Cristian, Ibson, and Toró; and Renato Augusto and Souza. The first player to lose a starting spot is defensive midfielder Jailton, who is expected to make way for Jônatas.
During the match against Huracán-URU last Sunday, an incident drew attention when midfielder Toró accused an opponent of calling him a "monkey." After the Uruguayan denied the incident, coach Joel Santana tried to put an end to the matter. "Anyone in the Libertadores has to be prepared for these things. They call us 'macaquito,' 'negrito,' and that kind of thing. We have to get over it," he declared.

Flamengo and São Paulo postpone "Diego Tardelli soap opera" until Tuesday
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
The ongoing saga between Flamengo, São Paulo, and striker Diego Tardelli continues. With the final date set for this Monday, a decision on the case is only expected on Tuesday, when Flamengo's vice president of football, Kleber Leite, will meet with Flamengo president Juvenal Juvêncio in São Paulo.
If he signs with Flamengo, Diego Tardelli will have to come to an understanding with Souza and Obina
To seal the deal with São Paulo, Flamengo needs to pay US$1 million upfront, in addition to transferring an amount to Tricolor, if Diego Tardelli is transferred to another club.
Even before being signed by the Gávea club, the player was already embroiled in intense controversy. First, he exchanged barbs with striker Souza.
When Flamengo was looking to sign Ronaldo from Milan, Tardelli declared it would be an honor to play alongside the "Phenomenon." However, upon hearing his words, the Flamengo striker said the São Paulo player would have to work hard to earn a starting spot.
"The only striker who will have a guaranteed spot if he comes to Flamengo is Ronaldo. Tardelli, if he comes, will have to fight hard to play, he'll have to sweat. I saw an interview where he said it would be a dream to play with Ronaldo, but he forgot that we have Souza and Obina here," he said about five days ago.
This Monday, it was Obina's turn to come to Souza's defense and "attack" Diego Tardelli. According to the club's favorite, the São Paulo forward should be more restrained in his statements.
"I'm not worried about Diego Tardelli's signing. He needs to know what to say. I'll be by Souza's side. Only we know what it takes to be a starter, and someone else comes along and says what shouldn't be. We're very united," he said.
If Diego Tardelli is hired, coach Joel Santana will have at his disposal, in addition to Souza and Obina, five more attackers: Maxi Biancucchi, Éder and Paulo Sérgio, who is with the red-black team in the São Paulo Junior Cup.

Fla postpones decision on Tardelli
Kléber Leite will talk to the president of São Paulo this Tuesday

Diego Tardelli at São Paulo training
Flamengo had until Monday night to exercise priority in signing Diego Tardelli. Flamengo now has more time to resolve the matter. This Tuesday, Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, will speak with São Paulo president Juvenal Juvêncio to resolve the matter.
To sign the striker, the Rio de Janeiro club must pay US$1 million upfront and also guarantee Tricolor 20% in a future negotiation. The signing would complete Flamengo's roster for the beginning of 2008.
Controversy
Even before arriving at Gávea, Tardelli was embroiled in controversy for declaring his dream of playing with Ronaldo. Both Souza and Obina felt disrespected by the São Paulo player.
Souza was even more direct, saying that Tardelli "was never the top scorer in the Brazilian Championship" and that he should think again, as he could watch everything from the bench. On Monday, Obina added that he was with his teammate "for whatever happens."
Upon learning of the small confusion, Kléber Leite warned that, if Tardelli is hired, he and Souza will share the same room.
Romulo: 'I can't complain about anything'

Romulo is almost ready to return to play for Flamengo
Rômulo was a regular starter for Flamengo when, in October, he suffered a ligament injury in his right knee. Now, in the final stages of recovery, he's seeing increased competition for his position.
Jônatas, Gavilán, and Jaílton are competing with him for the starting midfielder spot in Joel Santana's system. However, instead of lamenting, the player holds his head high and thinks positively.
"I can't complain about anything. I'm only 20 years old and I'm on Flamengo's professional squad. I can only be grateful for everything that's changed in my life in the last year," says the player, who trained alone at CT Ninho do Urubu during Ney Franco's time.
He's expected to be fully recovered by mid-February. But every day, coach Joel Santana makes it clear he hasn't forgotten him.
"He always turns around and says he's watching. It's good to see that Professor Joel cares so much about me," says the midfielder.
This Tuesday, Rômulo will return to training with his teammates on Barra da Tijuca beach in Rio's West Zone. Training on the field is expected to begin within a week at the latest.
Fans will pay a high price in the Carioca
Tickets go up to 50% and there will be no difference between classics and other games
Rio fans will have to pay more to watch their team's games
No sooner do fans start to get excited about their team's signings for the season than they're immediately thrown a wrench in the works by management. Ticket prices for this year's Campeonato Carioca matches have been raised far above the country's annual inflation rate, rising 4,46% last year, in some cases reaching 50%.
According to the newspaper "O Globo," this year there will be no price difference for games between big teams and small teams and derbies, as there was last year. At Maracanã, for example, where the derbies will be held and where Flamengo and Fluminense will host their games against the smaller teams, the white stands will cost R$40, and the green and yellow stands will cost R$30. In 2007, there was only one price for the stands, but one for smaller matches and another for more popular ones: R$20 for games between big teams and small teams, and R$30 for derbies.
In the semifinal stages of the Guanabara Cup and Rio Cup, and in the finals, the price of the stands skyrockets to R$50 for the white stands and R$40 for the green and yellow stands. At São Januário, where Vasco will play its games against the smaller teams, the price will be more inviting: R$20 for the stands. Engenhão, where Botafogo will play its less popular games, will follow the Maracanã prices: R$30 for the upper stands, R$40 for the lower stands, and R$20 for the stands behind the goal.
Sales points outside stadiums on match days
There will be no ticket sales at the box office on match days, but sales booths near the stadiums will sell tickets to those who wait until the last minute. At Maracanã, it has already been decided that the booths will be located at Praça Varnhagem, Praça da Bandeira, and a third location to be chosen. At São Januário, fans will find tickets at Campo de São Cristóvão. The sales location for matches at Engenhão has not yet been decided.
Another advantage for Vasco fans is that those who want to buy the package with the 12 games the team will play at São Januário will pay R$96, or just R$8 per match. Fluminense's board created the Passaporte Tricolor, which offers three different plans for its fans: R$25 per month entitles them to a regular seat at Maracanã or a similar location at another stadium; R$40 for the grandstand; and R$100 for a special seat, all valid for four games.
Joel's consistency wins over the group
Coach starts 2008 with Flamengo from 2007 and receives praise from the squad
Eduardo Peixoto
Jônatas will have to work hard to earn a spot in Flamengo's midfield. Gavilán is a Paraguayan international, Rodrigo arrived with a reputation as a great defender, and Jônatas arrived as a midfield solution. Not to mention five-time champion Kléberson. But despite their renown, all of them—plus Marcinho and Éder—will have to earn their spots in Flamengo's starting lineup on the field.
From the first training session, coach Joel Santana adopted a deserved approach. The players who led the Red-Blacks to the Copa Libertadores took the lead and left the reinforcements on the bench. This approach received praise.
"Here at Flamengo, we know whoever is best will play. That gives us a lot of confidence," says captain Fábio Luciano.
Meritocracy
Even those not yet fit to take the field were pleased with the coach's approach. A starter for much of the Brazilian Championship, midfielder Rômulo is recovering from a right knee injury. He believes the coach has "won over" the players.
"I thought it was really cool that he didn't dismiss last year's work. This makes the team even more united, without any intrigues," he says.
And what do the new signings think about this? Marcinho, for example, agrees that those who arrived later need to show on the field why they deserve a starting spot.
"I was very well received. But I know that whoever's coming in needs to fit into Joel's system," says the player, who scored a goal in the training match against Huracán-URU.
Obina: ugly foot and head in place
Striker hopes to regain his place at Flamengo this season, but without stress
Eduardo Peixoto
Obina shows his injured foot
The Flamengo fan base is still as frenetic as ever. But Obina knows he needs to fight hard if he wants to maintain his prestige throughout this year. During the preseason, the striker, even on the bench, was the most celebrated player in Teresópolis.
In the training match against Nicaragua, he injured his right foot and spent the final three days training. This Monday, he was in Gávea for extra training. His foot isn't bothering him as much, and he'll return to training with his teammates on Tuesday.
- It's still a little swollen, look. But look quickly because my foot is pretty ugly - jokes the player.
Regarding the fight for a starting spot, he's calm. He believes he'll be able to regain his position over the course of the year.
"I have to be a little patient. But I'm ready to join the team and score goals whenever Joel wants," he declares.
Ten days to unite Fla even more
Players believe the group is even more cohesive after the preseason in the mountains
Eduardo Peixoto
The buzzword at Flamengo is unity. The family formed by father Joel Santana in 2007 gained a new—and strengthened—incarnation in 2008. During the ten days of preseason in Teresópolis, the players cemented the cohesion that became the team's trademark in last year's Brazilian Championship comeback.
Egídio is inseparable from Souza, Cristian is always by Ibson's side, and Obina has warned that she's with Souza "through thick and thin." And so, their parallel friendships grow stronger. Not even the unfriendly Polish corridor at the training camp causes any discomfort (watch Obina's explanation of the joke).
"There's no room for cliques here. Everyone rows together, and the atmosphere is even better than last year. There are 30 players willing to help each other. There's respect and friendship," says captain Fábio Luciano.
In the reserves' training match against Tupi-MG, newcomer Marcinho was the target of a brutal challenge from a towering rival defender. It was enough for Kléberson to ignore the size difference and confront his opponent.
"We're buying into each other's noise. We're even more united. Kléberson came along to defend Marcinho. That's it," analyzes midfielder Ibson.
Racism becomes the topic of Joel's lecture
Fábio Luciano remembers that Corinthians was eliminated because of Argentine provocations
Eduardo Peixoto\,\
Flamengo players lost their tempers over alleged racism. The incident with Toró in the training match against Huracán-URU on Sunday will be the subject of Joel Santana's Flamengo team talk. The coach will gather the players to warn them that, during the Copa Libertadores, insults—racial and otherwise—will be very common.
"Let's talk, yes. They have to keep their heads on straight and not get upset by these provocations. The Libertadores is like that all the time," says the red-and-black coach.
Fabio's Experience
Team captain Fábio Luciano has bitter memories of reacting to the provocations. In 2003, he believes that Argentine D'Alessandro eliminated Corinthians through his trickery.
Then, at River Plate, a supporter insulted left-back Kléber in the first game. The result: the Brazilian lost his temper and was sent off. The same story happened in São Paulo. This time, the villain was full-back Roger. He violently tackled D'Alessandro and also received a red card.
"The experience was unpleasant, and I'll pass this on to my teammates. These provocations generate strong reactions, and in a serious game, they can be fatal," declares Fábio Luciano.

The saga surrounding Flamengo's attempt to sign Diego Tardelli seems endless. However, it may now be over. The matter will be resolved this Tuesday, when Flamengo's vice president of football, Kleber Leite, will meet in São Paulo with Flamengo president Juvenal Juvêncio to try to seal the deal.
- Negotiations have progressed and I hope to define everything this Tuesday - said Kleber Leite.
Diego Tardelli was once very close to signing with Flamengo and even gave interviews saying he would like to partner with Ronaldo of Milan, who was also considered. However, the statements ended up creating a bad feeling with Souza and Obina, who stated that Tardelli would have to work hard to be a starter for Flamengo.
Marcinho struggles to get into shape at Flamengo
Supporter believes he will reach ideal fitness during the week
Recently signed by Flamengo, midfielder Marcinho is still working to improve his physical condition and be fit for the match next Sunday, when Flamengo's Campeonato Carioca debut against Boavista at Maracanã. The player stated that the reception he received at his new club was very positive and believes that during the week he will be able to reach the necessary level to play.
"I was very well received by the board, the coaching staff, and my teammates. The biggest challenge is getting in shape, but I think with this week of training I'll be fine," he told Rádio Globo.
This Monday, Marcinho, along with five other Fla players who are also out of shape, trained in Gávea.
With a weakened squad, Fla faces Goiás in the Copa SP
Striker Paulo Sérgio and defender Fabrício, both suspended, will not play
Fred Gomes RIO DE JANEIRO
Flamengo, boasting the best attack in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup, faces Goiás this Tuesday at 19 p.m. at the Barão da Serra Negra stadium in Piracaciba. The team will be without two players for the second-round match: defender Fabrício, who was sent off against XV de Novembro, and Paulo Sérgio, who has picked up two yellow cards.
- Of course, Paulo Sérgio is missed by any team, but the group has quality and shouldn't have any problems - guarantees coach Rogério Lourenço.
Rogério practically defined the team that will face the Goiás team: Marcelo, Michel, Michel Pereira, Lucas and Jorbson; Lennon, Welington Peca, Erick and Renan Silva (Guilherme Camacho); Bruno Paulo (Juninho) and Pedro Beda.
"With Guilherme in midfield, I'll have more support for the defense, which needs adjustments. He's also a good arrival. Up front, Juninho is more technical, while Bruno stays in the box more," explains Rogério, who will have the return of Lucas and Lennon, who missed the match against XV de Piracicaba due to suspension.
Obina wants to look good for the fans
The red-and-black darling guarantees that the nation's affection is important, but that's not everything.
LANCEPRESS!
Struggling with weight problems, striker Obina wants to return to his prime. To do so, he relies on the support of Flamengo's fans, who have idolized him since 2006. However, he knows he needs to be in good physical shape to be one of Joel's chosen players for Flamengo's attack.
radio l! - It's definitely important (the affection), but even more so is my work on the field, which I have to do well. I know the fans also do their part and help me a lot, so since they want to see me, I have to be in good shape for coach Joel to choose me in attack - he analyzed. (click and listen)
Erick admits he needs help with marking
The midfielder has been Flamengo's main highlight in the Copa SP
Fred Gomes RIO DE JANEIRO
Flamengo's standout performer in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup, Erick Flores, gave LANCENET! an analysis of its performance so far in the competition, highlighting its main strengths and weaknesses in a self-critical review. Flamengo faces Goiás this Tuesday in the second phase of the Copinha, at 19 p.m. at Barão da Serra Negra Stadium in Piracicaba.
"I need to help defend more so as not to overload the midfielders. But there's an explanation: I arrived after the group stage and didn't even do preseason training, as I played in the Brazilian Under-19 Championship in December and was called up in a hurry. I arrived a little unwell physically, but I'm already getting better," says the 18-year-old, who has scored two goals in the competition.
If Erick didn't hesitate to mention his weaknesses in the competition, the player also had personality in recognizing his main contributions to the team with the best attack in the São Paulo Cup - Fla has 17 goals.
- I'm managing to participate in the plays, helping the attack, and I scored my goals - he celebrates.
The defeat in the last round of Group N - the first phase of the competition -, despite not having taken away Flamengo's leadership or qualification, was seen as a warning by the young prospect.
"The group is more focused. We were doing very well, but we stumbled. We're all well-connected, and now we'll face a club with a reputation. It will be good to beat them, and we're determined to qualify, which will be important for us and the fans," he concludes.
Midfielder Romulo happy with signings at Fla
Player says club must fight for all competitions it participates in
Fred Gomes RIO
Confident of returning to the field in about a month, midfielder Rômulo praised Flamengo's signings for this season, assuring that he isn't worried about the arrival of new players for his sector at the club. The 20-year-old believes that strengthening the squad is an initiative that will allow the Rubro-Negro to compete for every title it competes for.
"Flamengo did well to sign several players. It's important to have a strong squad, as one or two players can get injured. With a large squad, there's the ability to fill in for absences," he assures.
With an emphasis on the Libertadores, Rômulo states that Fla must respect its traditions, that is, fight for all the tournaments it participates in.
"We have to fight for every title. There's no point in entering the Libertadores and then leaving in the first or second round. We have to compete to win, reaching the semifinals and finals, and winning the title," he preaches.
Ibson praises the Flamengo group
LANCEPRESS!
Midfielder Ibson heaped praise on the group of players Flamengo assembled for the 2008 season. For the player, the most important thing now is to continue working toward the Campeonato Carioca debut next Sunday at Maracanã. Ibson revealed other reasons for staying focused in training.
"I have to stay in good shape, because we have a very strong group, and if I give in, I'll end up losing my position on the team. I want to stay in good shape all year," he says.
With the Carioca and Libertadores debuts fast approaching (Flamengo debuts in the South American competition in February), a question always arises: should Flamengo prioritize a particular competition? Gávea's number 7 has the answer.
"We have to consider the competition based on its importance, but the fans don't care. We'll have to balance both competitions, the Libertadores and the Carioca," he commented.
