With the Brazilian Championship over, Flamengo continues to fight for a spot in the Libertadores—with Fluminense's loss to Palmeiras, their chances dropped from 80% to 74%—and the long-standing Japanese offer to bring coach Joel Santana could not be overlooked. And it wasn't even Joel who made it public, in a well-known attempt to boost his own profile, the popular "dumb trick." On the contrary, to avoid leaving a question unanswered, the coach, somewhat embarrassed and unsure, confirmed it.
But, unlike in 2005, when he swapped Flamengo for Japanese football right after having taken the red-black team out of the relegation zone, Joel made a point of saying right away that not even a truckload of money would get him out of Gávea these days.
"That doesn't appeal to me anymore. I'm happy here; recognition is the greatest reward I could have here at Flamengo. The board already wanted to talk about 2008, and I changed the subject," said Joel, who no longer cares about a statue. "My bust is already in every fan's mind..."
According to Joel, there's an imperceptible magic at Flamengo that makes those who work there think long and hard before leaving. Defender Fábio Luciano confirms this theory. By renewing his contract until the end of 2008, with the possibility of extending it until December 2009, he left no doubt that, at 32, he had found his perfect home.
"The desire to renew was mutual, and the agreement was reached quickly. But I'm only thinking about one more year. Whether I stay longer will depend on my condition at the time. I want to keep playing if I'm 100% healthy," says Fábio Luciano.

It wasn't just Flamengo's board that managed to get midfielder Cristian to play against Atlético-PR on the 25th at Maracanã, with the Nação Rubro-Negra in attendance. Ibson hopes for the best for the next season.
Overlooked by Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira, Ibson returned to Flamengo midway through this year after turning down offers from several European clubs, including Greek club Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. Gradually, the midfielder recovered physically and is now the Rubro-Negro's standout player in the Brazilian Championship.
After yesterday's training session at Ninho do Urubu, in Vargem Grande, the player gave a brief overview of his new stint at the country's most popular team and warned that after the lean years, Rubro-Negro will experience an era of 'fat cows'.
"I had a good year and I hope next year will be good too. The whole group is definitely committed to this, and we'll try to qualify for the Libertadores to give a gift to this wonderful crowd. I hope all the problems are put aside next year and that we bring a lot of joy to the fans. With each passing year, the tendency is to evolve; the club is improving, and things are happening. Not even the rain spoils the party in Gávea
Flamengo's 112th anniversary celebrations took place throughout the day in Gávea and were attended by many executives, artists, and celebrities. The festivities began with the now-traditional fireworks display at 7:15 a.m. and continued throughout the afternoon yesterday. One of the attractions that most caught the attention of club members was the soccer match between artists, featuring artists such as Thiago Lacerda, Marcos Palmeira, and Heitor Martinez, as well as singer Gabriel, o Pensador.

The best news of the week for Flamengo fans was captain Fábio Luciano's stay for another year. Yesterday, after a physical training session at CT Ninho do Urubu, the defender spoke about the matter for the first time, without hiding his satisfaction with the happy ending.
"It was what it was meant to be. I wanted it, and so did the board, so it was easy. I preferred to sign a one-year contract because I want to play as long as I feel I'm performing at a high level. I hope to play here until the end of my career. I want to do my job well above all else," explained the defender.
Since making his Flamengo debut on August 11th, scoring a goal in a 2-1 victory over Náutico, Fábio Luciano has played 20 matches for Flamengo, losing only four, drawing four, and winning 12. He has only missed two matches, in victories over Figueirense and Vasco. Despite having improved the team's defense, the defender is still not satisfied.
"My idea is to give a title to the Flamengo fans. I'm happy here and I hope all the other players renew their contracts too, because our team is strong and can win the Libertadores, even though it's very difficult. I'd like to work with this group next year," he hoped.
As the defender himself admitted, other clubs, such as Corinthians, approached him, but the possibility of continuing to work with Joel Santana was one of the factors that influenced his decision. The board is now fighting to renew the contracts of the coach and goalkeeper Bruno, whose contracts expire at the end of this year.

Coach Joel Santana admitted yesterday, for the first time, why he hasn't yet accepted the Flamengo board's contract renewal offer. A multi-million dollar offer from Japan's Vegalta Sendai, the same company that took him away from Flamengo in late 2005, could dash fans' dreams of seeing the coach manage the team next year.
"Every time a coach does a job that's recognized by fans and the press, offers come in. I'd be reckless if I said no, but my mind is focused solely on Flamengo, on the pleasure of being here right now and closing out the year with a bang. Flamengo's board has even tried to talk to me about staying next year, but I'd rather wait until later so I don't lose focus on this championship," Joel admitted.
The Flamengo manager is an idol in Japan. Vegalta Sendai, when he was there, had dolls made with Joel's face. At the club's farewell at the end of last year, some players even cried. But Flamengo has a huge advantage, one that could seal the coach's stay at Gávea: the emotional factor.
"The pleasure of being recognized isn't something you get every day, and it messes with my ego. Now isn't the time to talk about it, as the players are even apprehensive about the possibility of me leaving. The atmosphere is so good, so family-like, that it's best if we focus solely on the game against Atlético-PR, which could put us in the Copa Libertadores. The transfer isn't the most important thing right now. I guarantee that financial issues won't influence this decision," the coach added.

He managed to transform a team that was a likely candidate for a final fight against relegation into a strong contender for the Copa Libertadores. Rio - Faith moves mountains, and so do Flamengo fans. At a meeting held yesterday in Gávea, during the 112th anniversary celebrations of the club's founding, leaders of the main organized fan groups made a promise to paint a Rio landmark red and black.
If the team secures a spot in the Copa Libertadores, a group of at least 40 fans will walk up Estrada das Paineiras to dress the statue of Christ the Redeemer with a gigantic number 12 shirt from the Gávea team.
The fans will submit the idea to Flamengo officials, who will request authorization from the appropriate authorities. In any case, if the request is denied, they will lay the number 12 jersey at the statue's feet. "Christ is the image of Rio, and the Marvelous City is more than ever experiencing the Flamengo spirit. So, there's nothing better than dressing the statue in the number 12 jersey," says José Carlos Peruano, one of the creators of the idea.
The shirt-shaped flag weighs a little over 40 kilos. But part of the promise is not to use any kind of vehicle to carry the gigantic shirt to the top of the hill. "The promise is to climb on foot, carrying the weight, with 40 people. We'll invite other fans to join us. It will be a red-and-black procession," says José Carlos, adding: "God is much more than Brazilian; God is red-and-black."
An additional attraction for tourists
In 2001, to celebrate the third state championship won against Vasco, dozens of fans went to Christ the Redeemer and unfurled a huge flag in the shape of a Flamengo shirt.
On that occasion, in addition to praising divine powers, fans thanked Petkovic, who scored the title-winning goal with a free kick in the 43rd minute of the second half. The flag that was unfurled at the time was 42 meters high and 30 meters wide, similar to the current one. The postcard displaying Flamengo's colors in 2001 became an added attraction for tourists, who took out their cameras to capture the scene.
Besides the promise of dressing one of the new wonders of the world in a Flamengo jersey, the fans are preparing a party for the match against Atlético-PR. The idea of a trio elétrico outside Maracanã stadium has not been ruled out.

For some Flamengo players, anxiety means all of this and more: hoping for the moment to step onto the field and secure their spot in the 2008 Copa Libertadores as quickly as possible. The pre-match tension messes with some people's minds, but it doesn't affect others.
For psychologist Paulo Ribeiro, no professional intervention will be necessary for the red-and-black team. According to him, there's nothing more to be done psychologically, especially since the team will be out of action for two weeks, despite being at the top of the table.
"The worst moment was when the Brasileirão stopped and the team was in the relegation zone, where it remained 'parked' for many rounds. It wasn't easy to show the players that they weren't incompetent, but simply unlucky when the table stopped. I gave some talks and shared winning stories through DVDs to lift the spirits of the entire group. And I think we succeeded," says the psychologist.
Midfielder Íbson would like to play for Atlético-PR soon, but he's grateful for the time off. He'll take the opportunity to enjoy his newborn son, Íbson Júnior. Full-back Leonardo Moura also enjoyed the break.
Striker Obina, on the other hand, wants to get back on the field tomorrow, if possible. The striker finds himself imagining what the game will be like, the crowd's turnout at a packed Maracanã stadium, the joy of another victory...
"Wow, I'm so anxious. It would be good to get this over with and start thinking about vacation. This year has been very exhausting, especially for me," said the Bahia native, who is already dreaming of his relaxing days off on Itaparica Island.
Another tattoo for Junior
A first tattoo should be striking and have a special meaning. Supporter Íbson got his newborn son Júnior's name inked on his right forearm at a studio in Niterói. He enjoyed the experience so much that he's already chosen a new design to honor his son and perpetuate his other passion: soccer.
"I found a drawing of a boy holding a soccer ball. I saw another really cool one, which has a little couple: the boy with the ball and the girl holding a doll. I'll do this one when I have a girl," she plans.
The next tattoo will be on his ribs. The player already knows it's one of the most sensitive areas to pain, but he doesn't care. He thought the design was so beautiful and received so many compliments on his first tattoo that he's willing to get it again. "It'll be worth the pain to mark this special moment in my life," says the Gávea fan.
A PARTY DAY, BUT WITH ARGUMENTS
Flamengo's 112th anniversary would have been celebrated in absolute peace, were it not for a heated argument between President Márcio Braga and an opposition advisor who questioned the current president's character. The argument nearly ended in a brawl, but the "let it go" crowd acted quickly and prevented the worst.
But nothing could spoil the party held in Gávea yesterday. A soccer game featuring Planet Globe, a team made up of artists, was the main attraction. Rubro-Negro fans like Thiago Lacerda and Heitor Martinez were standouts for the team, which also featured Vasco da Gama's Marcos Palmeira.

Rio - The Japanese's scrutiny is pointless. Coach Joel Santana is very happy at Gávea, will renew his contract at the end of the year, and is only thinking about planning for the Copa Libertadores, once he secures a spot. Preferably with a victory over Atlético-PR on the 25th at Maracanã. Joel received the green light yesterday from Kléber Leite to field midfielder Cristian, who has been cleared by Atlético-PR officials. Now, all that's left to do is choose a replacement for Toró, who is suspended.
Cristian, like a true Minas Gerais native, is still a bit hesitant. He said he'd rather see the final details before celebrating his selection, knowing Flamengo would have to pay R$100 if he faced his former club.

Defender Fábio Luciano was born in Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, but has fully adapted to Rio. Atlético-PR denies Cristian's release to play for Flamengo

Flamengo's board and the player himself have already confirmed Cristian's participation in the match against Atlético-PR on the 25th, at 18:10 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, for the 37th and penultimate round of the Brazilian Championship. However, according to the Paraná club, that's not quite the case.
On its official website, Furacão made it clear that it has no say in Cristian's use in the match. According to the Paraná-based club, there is a contract between the two clubs, in which Atlético-PR temporarily loaned the player.

Believe it or not, the fan who created the No. 12 jersey, officially launched in Gávea this Thursday by president Marcio Braga, isn't a die-hard Flamengo fan. A 26-year-old Coritiba fanatic, Roberto Janz submitted his design to the marketing department and ended up winning the contest. The red-and-black team will wear the uniform in the match against Atlético-PR on the 25th at Maracanã.
Interestingly, Flamengo's players haven't yet seen the number 12 jersey, designed by Roberto. The graphic designer was pleased to learn of the uniform's popularity, which has already won over some artists who saw the jersey with president Marcio Braga and a copy with GLOBOESPORTE.COM.
"I work with more than ten red-and-blacks, but I'm a Coritiba fan. It's funny because everyone loves soccer. The company used to be in Rio de Janeiro, but moved to Curitiba a year ago," says Roberto Janz, who made a curious revelation.
"I've never been to Maracanã. I've never seen Flamengo fans singing in their stadium. My art director (Sandro Serzedelo) told me how Flamengo fans behave in the stadium, and I came up with the idea," says the graphic designer.

Friday is a big Rio basketball derby. Flamengo and Vasco da Gama will face off in what promises to be the most exciting match in recent years of the Men's State Basketball Championship. The game will take place at the Caio Martins gymnasium in Niterói, starting at 20 p.m.
The Gávea team leads the competition with a 100% record—eight wins in eight matches. The São Januário team is in second place with a 91,6% record—five wins and one loss.
On the court, a separate duel between Valtinho and Marcelinho takes place. Together on the Brazilian national team since 2003, the Vasco da Gama point guard and the red-and-black wing are their teams' hopes for victory.
Commander of the Cruzmaltina caravel, coach José Carlos Vidal denies that he will use special marking on the arch-rival's main player.
"I think of them as a whole. Flamengo's strength is its attack, so we have to defend hard to reduce their points tally. The group is highly motivated to represent Vasco da Gama. Many of our players have never represented a football club, but they have experience in decisions and matches at this level," said Vidal.

However, he states that the main objective is to qualify for the second phase:
"Flamengo is a big club, just one club. Whether it's soccer or basketball, we're thinking about getting even with them," Chupeta said.
The competition will take place in four countries (Puerto Rico, the United States, Brazil, and Argentina) and will run from December 11th of this year to February 9th of next year. Universo, the current national champion, and Minas, the current champion of the South American Club Championship, are the other Brazilian representatives.
The coach said that a victory would have a very special flavor, citing Brazil's rivalry with Argentina and Uruguay:
"It's an international competition, where there's a fierce rivalry between us and the Uruguayans and Argentina. Our main goal is to qualify, but qualifying over them would be even better."

In a proof that a true Flamengo fan never forgets the club, Edir Soares, known as Didi and belonging to the group that won the 1966 Women's Club World Cup, appeared in Gávea to celebrate Flamengo's 112th anniversary and showed herself to be yet another fan of striker Obina.
"Being a Flamengo fan is incredibly exciting, especially on the club's anniversary. I've always gone to Maracanã to support, even when I was playing basketball," revealed former point guard Didi, who considers Angelina the greatest player in history and considers her to be on par with Hortência.
