During its heroic run last year, Flamengo found itself in a quagmire. Bolstered by Souza's vigor, the team managed to escape the quagmire under a deluge in Caxias do Sul in a draw with Juventude. Considered undisciplined and bohemian, he began to display, from that game on, a rare physical strength and willpower to lead the team to the Libertadores. Alone among the defenders, with his back to goal, he endured blows and the mission of serving those coming from behind. At 25, he is willing to sacrifice even more today against his former club. "Those who follow me know I'm working hard and my fitness has improved significantly. Hero of Vasco's last title breaks emotional ties
Until now, the goal Souza fans remember most was the one that gave the club its last title, in the 2003 State Championship. Despite the victorious memory, the top scorer has already gotten used to his new life. Whether among defenders or facing the past, Souza prefers to turn his back. He only uses his arms to embrace a former teammate and current opponent:
"I have a lot of affection for Edmundo, I'm a huge fan of his. I don't have any affection for Vasco, no. My affection is for Flamengo. Leave Vasco there and me here."
With Edmundo, Souza does not recommend the same distance he keeps from São Januário.
"We have to worry about him. He has many qualities and a history in football. Despite his advanced age, he is very strong and needs to be watched closely," he said.
The possibility of Cristian returning to the team alongside Jaílton in defense is a cause for concern. Since Toró suffered a right thigh injury in the muscle responsible for sprinting, Flamengo will have to find vigor and combativeness elsewhere. Despite doctor José Luiz Runco's statement that Toró had a 50% chance of playing in the derby, the player's pain and appearance contradicted the prognosis.

It's interesting to see a club competing in both the Rio State Championship and the Copa Libertadores da América, because we can see the differences and/or similarities in their performance in both. Flamengo had a good run in the Taça Guanabara, facing Duque de Caxias, Cardoso Moreira, and similar teams—all in the Maracanã box.
In his debut in the Libertadores he didn't do so well, even playing against a team that isn't really that great.
The main difference is that the game was played on the opponent's turf, far from home, in Tacna, Peru, so far away that Flamengo forgot its tradition, left its identity in Gávea, and entered the field as a second division team, playing very defensively and with its countless midfielders distributing kicks.

Toró, Joel's biggest headache
Toró, alongside Renato Augusto, could also be out today.
Since returning from Tacna on Thursday, coach Joel Santana has been more concerned than usual. In addition to the natural tension that precedes a Clássico dos Milhões, the coach still doesn't know if he'll be able to count on a key player in his formation: midfielder Toró, who suffered a blow to his right thigh in the match against Coronel Bolognesi and has been out of action with the rest of the squad since. A true Flamengo tormentor—in his career, he scored 18 times in 25 matches against Flamengo, 14 of those goals for Vasco—this time he no longer possesses the ferocity of his former days.
