Bitter draw in tense game at Maracanã

There was no shortage of excitement and tension in the 1-1 draw between Vasco and Flamengo last night at Maracanã. The first half was frantic, with good plays and scoring chances. The second half was fearful of losing, when neither team took many risks. The result ended up being bittersweet for both teams.
Vasco now sits in sixth place with 40 points, dropping out of the top four in the Brazilian league. Flamengo sits in 13th place with 33 points, just two ahead of Paraná with 31 points and Náutico with 30, in the relegation zone.
The game started off hotly. Two minutes in, Cristian was dispossessed by Dudar, who deflected the ball into a corner. Renato Augusto took the shot, and Jorge Luiz rebounded with his hand inside the box. Referee Marcelo de Lima Henrique ignored the penalty and cautioned Fábio Luciano.
In the eighth minute, Renato Augusto drove the ball and felt a twinge in his left thigh. He left the field, replaced by Paulo Sérgio. In the tenth minute, Vasco won a corner from a play by Conca. Of those who had reason to leave Maracanã with the honors of being the red-and-black standouts of the derby, right-back Leonardo Moura and goalkeeper Bruno took the result in stride. Scorer of the game-winning goal, the full-back had a speech of praise for the group.

The incident shook Brazil, but political demonstrations are not permitted at Maracanã Stadium. Two men attending the Flamengo-Vasco derby this Sunday were prevented from protesting the Senate's acquittal of Renan Calheiros in a session held last Wednesday in Brasília.
The two men unfurled a black banner with the words "Cowardly Senate!", but the protest was short-lived. Major Marcelo Pessoa, commander of the Special Stadium Policing Group (Gepe), soon arrived at the edge of the lower seats, where the pair were sitting, and asked them to end the protest.
Accompanied by a police officer, the two left the venue applauded by the other fans, in a gesture that united two rival fan bases.
