'I'm Maxi, not Messi's cousin'

It was more or less predictable. By scoring the goal in the heroic 1-0 victory over Fluminense the day before yesterday, Argentine Maxi Biancucci quickly became the talk of the town, Flamengo's new hero. And, of course, the inevitable and inappropriate comparisons to Doval, the last Argentine to truly succeed at Gávea, were inevitable—after him came others like goalkeeper Fillol, midfielder Mancuso, and striker Borghi. Although he confesses to being in a special moment, Maxi began showing something that had been bothering him yesterday.
"I'm Maxi, not Messi's cousin. My cousin is a different player, but no one succeeds because they're related to someone," says Maxi.
Enjoying the sudden prestige that a goal often brings to ephemeral heroes, Maxi says he's surprised by his momentary popularity. This clever Argentine, born in Rosario 21 years ago, played in his homeland for Newell's Old Boys and was later discovered by Flamengo at the modest Deportivo Luqueño in Paraguay. He claims he's not a hero candidate, but he gets excited when he talks about his goal in the Fla-Flu match the day before yesterday.
"It was amazing! It's one thing to imagine scoring a goal in a classic like the Fla-Flu match; it's another to experience that emotion firsthand. But I don't want to be a hero alone. The group has to overcome this difficult time and escape the relegation zone," said Maxi, who dreams of establishing himself at Flamengo and envisioning a chance to play for the Argentine national team.
Toró considered to replace Roger
Max says he doesn't have much time to explore Rio. Living in Barra, he's only been to the beach once so far, with his wife, Jazmin. A homebody, he communicates with his family via MSN. But yesterday, he received a call from his aunt, Celia, mother of Messi, his famous Barcelona cousin, with whom he hadn't spoken since the Copa América final.
"She called me to congratulate me. I haven't spoken to Leonel since the Copa América final. I teased him about the loss to Brazil, and he was furious," he says, laughing.
In a family of stars and star projects, he reveals that he has a brother worth betting on.
"It's Bruno, he's only 10 years old and he plays really well. My other brother, who's 19, is also a good player, but Brunito will be another star in the family."
And if the idea is to bet on short players, coach Joel Santana isn't just betting on the Argentine. Another short player, who seemed forgotten in the squad, could be included tomorrow against Palmeiras, replacing Roger. At 1,70m tall, Toró has been pleasing Joel. If the Bahia native is included from the start, Paulo Sérgio will return to the bench. He's likely to be the only reserve striker, as Leonardo felt a twinge in the back of his left thigh during a sprint at the end of yesterday's training match and could be ruled out.
"Obina had a very important performance yesterday (the day before yesterday). Through his hard work and dedication, he improved significantly and scored a beautiful goal in training. He's gaining mobility and regaining his ball possession. I'm wondering if he'll start," announced Joel, who confirmed the inclusion of Luizinho and Egídio, replacing the suspended Leonardo Moura and Juan.
While the victory in the Fla-Flu match lifted another weight off Joel's shoulders, the Superior Court of Sports Justice promises to complicate his life again. Marcelo Jucá, a prosecutor for the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), will file an appeal to overturn the decision of the Third Disciplinary Committee, which acquitted the coach last Wednesday of the charge of inciting violence in the match against Santos last Sunday at Vila Belmiro. Indicted under Article 279 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (inciting an infraction), Joel was unanimously acquitted.

Argentine Maxi Biancucchi couldn't have had a better Friday. After scoring the goal that secured Flamengo's 1-0 victory over rival Fluminense on Thursday, the player was all joy at Gávea. The striker revealed that he's not aiming for idol status, as he's only concerned with helping the team achieve the victories needed to lift Flamengo out of the relegation zone.
"I'm very happy. My family congratulated me on my goal in such an important game. I'm not thinking about being an idol. I want to help the team achieve victories; I'm thinking only about the group, not about the individual. I felt a lot of affection from the fans and I hope to continue helping," Maxi said in an interview with Rádio Globo.
Biancucchi also said that his biggest dream as a player is to wear the Argentina national team jersey. To achieve this, he believes Flamengo is a great showcase for coach Alfio Basile.
"It would be a great pleasure to wear the Argentina jersey. I believe Flamengo is a great gateway to the national team. If I do well here, I can fulfill this dream," he said.
Luisinho fears lack of game rhythm
With right-back Leonardo Moura suspended for his third yellow card in the Fla-Flu match, Luisinho saw the chance to start fall into his hands. Despite the chance to showcase his potential, he knows his chances of remaining among the starting lineup are slim.
"I'm hoping to play well and gradually show that I can be a starter. I know Léo Moura's ability, but I'm working really hard to establish myself and show my worth. If I play well, I'll give Joel another headache," analyzed the full-back.

With the typical Argentine tenacity, striker Maxi Biancucchi is steadily winning the hearts of the red-and-black fans. The player is gradually establishing himself as a starter, and on Thursday he was the standout performer in the victory over Fluminense, scoring the game-winning goal. Always in good spirits, Maxi commented yesterday at Gávea, where he received the affection of the fans, on the special moment he's experiencing.
"It was a very important victory for Flamengo, especially because it was a Fla-Flu match, which is special. Some family members called me to congratulate me on the goal. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to enjoy this moment, as we have a difficult game against Palmeiras on Sunday (tomorrow)," he warned.

The forward adapted to Rio de Janeiro very quickly. Enchanted by the city, he's now living in Barra, but he's only had one opportunity to see the Rio ocean up close: "The other day I went to the beach with my wife, Yasmin, to check it out. It's very beautiful, I hope to go there more often."

This is because the Barcelona star's middle name comes from his father, and the two are related because their mothers are sisters. Vice President of Football Kleber Leite announced yesterday in Gávea that defenders Irineu, Moisés, and Thiago Gosling are no longer part of the squad. The players weren't in coach Joel Santana's plans and agreed to an amicable contract termination, causing no burden to the club.
"These players are no longer part of the group. Irineu and Moisés have already signed their releases, and Thiago is finalizing the final details. It was an amicable agreement, good for the club and the players," said Kleber Leite.

When Messi's cousin—the Argentine soccer star and Barcelona star—arrived at the club in July, Flamengo's doctors decided he should undergo surgery to remove a sebaceous cyst from the left side of his jaw. Since then, Maxi has had a crooked mouth.
"I can't keep my mouth straight anymore. When I smile, it doesn't look right. But the doctors say it'll all go back to normal one day," the Fla-Flu hero said yesterday, expressing concern about his appearance.
Doctor José Luiz Runco confirmed that neuropraxia, the medical term for nerve compression, is indeed temporary. However, it has no set timeframe.
"In order to remove the tumor, the nerve was compressed during surgery. But everything will return to normal," Runco assured.
Maxi's style, however, is perfectly suited to Flamengo fans. At the Maracanã stadium, with nearly 60 fans, the Argentine could be certain he couldn't have a better showcase to achieve a new career goal.
"Making it to the Argentine national team would be a dream. I'll work hard to make that happen one day. If I do well here at Flamengo, doors will open," said the player, hoping to follow in his cousin Messi's footsteps.
While the doors are still open in Argentina, Maxi is entering a new world: Rio de Janeiro.
"The city is beautiful, but I don't have time to enjoy many things with my wife (Jazmin). I've only been to the beach once," said one of Barra da Tijuca's new illustrious residents.
The aunt calls and congratulates; the cousin doesn't.
Even Messi's mother, Aunt Celia, called from Argentina to congratulate Maxi Biancucchi on his goal in the Flamengo-Flu match. The only person missing was his famous cousin, whom the Flamengo player hasn't spoken to since the Copa América.
"Messi doesn't talk to me anymore because, when Argentina lost to Brazil, I joked with him," joked Maxi, who uses a toiletry bag from his country's national team, a gift from his cousin.
Despite having only started one game for Flamengo, Maxi already feels it's time to step out of the shadow of his famous Barcelona cousin. He wants to make his own history.
"He won't help. I want people to know me because I'm Maxi, not Messi's cousin. No one succeeds in life because they're related to someone," complained the 'hermano'.
Maxi's brothers are already facing the same problem. At 10, Bruno is a standout on the Renato Cesarini School team. And Emanuel, 19, plays for Newell's Old Boys. "Bruno plays very well. They say he'll be Messi's successor," concluded the Argentine, whose family grew up in football.

Three players, all defenders, are about to terminate their contracts with Flamengo due to the player shortage in the area. They are Moisés, Thiago, and Irineu. As coach Joel Santana and the Flamengo board have concluded they need to reduce the size of the squad, these are the first releases made by the club.
"We had eight defensive players. That's a lot of people, we don't need that many players for that position. So, someone had to be spared," commented coach Joel Santana.
Irineu was Flamengo's starting player until recently. Persecuted by the fans, he lost his spot to recently signed Fábio Luciano, who plays alongside Ronaldo Angelim. The released defender joined Flamengo for the 2007 season on the recommendation of then-coach Ney Franco.
Thiago spent a year and a half at Fluminense, plagued by injuries, but he excelled when he did play. Released by the Fluminense board, he was signed by Flamengo in early 2007. At Gávea, he continued to get injured frequently and didn't perform well when he did. He was eventually dropped.
Moisés also came to Flamengo on the recommendation of coach Ney Franco at the beginning of 2007. Like Irineu, he was a former Cruzeiro player and arrived to reinforce the team in the Copa Libertadores this year.
Joel praises Romulo's maturity

Prosecutor requests new trial for Joel
Flamengo coach could return to the dock for statements made in the technical area
Coach Joel Santana could return to the dock at the Superior Court of Sports Justice. Superior Court of Justice (STJD) prosecutor Marcelo Jucá will file an appeal to overturn the Third Disciplinary Committee's decision, which acquitted the coach last Wednesday. "Joel's actions are highly reprehensible. The prosecutor was not satisfied with the outcome and will appeal on Monday, the deadline for requesting a new trial," Marcelo Jucá told the Justiça Desportiva website.
Joel was tried by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) for statements made in the coaching area during the match against Santos. The coach was charged under Article 279 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (publicly inciting the commission of an infraction).
The coach was unanimously acquitted. After the trial, Joel said he was relieved to have been spared the suspension.

Flamengo defeated Silva Jardim 1-0 this Friday at Gávea Stadium. Obina scored the Flamengo goal. The match served as an opportunity for coach Joel Santana to analyze several players, including Luizinho and Egídio, who replaced Leo Moura and Juan on Sunday against Palmeiras at Palestra Itália.

Roger may be tried for simulation

Roger's case is similar to Vampeta's. At the end of the match between Corinthians and Botafogo last Wednesday, he feigned an injury when being substituted.
