Romário reinforces Vasco's bench in the classic against Fla
Joel Santana decides whether Renato Augusto starts playing in Toró's place
Márcio Tavares
The Vasco-Flamengo derby is so intriguing that even those who seemed to have abandoned their careers are keen to participate. Romário pushed the envelope, asking for a place, and coach Celso Roth, who had said the day before that he wasn't ready to play, had to swallow his sensible opinion to accept the decision of the important Cardinal of São Januário. In Gávea, the issue surrounding the lineup is simpler: Joel Santana doesn't know whether to start today's derby, at 21:45 p.m., at Maracanã, with Renato Augusto or Toró.
Vasco and Flamengo, like Sport, have 43 points, both holding the advantage because they each have 12 wins, while the Rio de Janeiro club has one less. The old rivals are missing players. At Vasco, midfielder Amaral was sent off against Botafogo and is suspended. At Flamengo, defender Fábio Luciano is also suspended.
Joel dreams of Obina's reinforcement on the bench tonight
On the eve of a classic that will be very important in the fight for places in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, Roth had to change his speech in relation to Romário, who remains above his ideal weight.
"Romário is a role model. Even if he hasn't completed all the physical conditioning stages, it's important that he's with the group and shares his experience. It's very important when a player of Romário's caliber is willing to help, even if it's not on the field," summarized Vasco's coach, who has only one doubt, at left back.
At Flamengo, besides the uncertainty regarding Renato Augusto or Toró, Joel Santana believes there may be some news regarding Obina. Suspended for 120 days for an assault on Internacional's Índio, the Bahia native has already served a five-match suspension. As the appeal seeking a sentence reduction will be heard this afternoon at the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), there is hope he will be cleared to play.
"We're going to try to downgrade the assault clause to an act of hostility, which ranges from one to six games. He's already missed five, and if he receives a lesser penalty, I'll request the immediate application of the new penalty, and Obina would be free to play," said Michel Assef Filho, Flamengo's legal director, who was happy for another reason, unrelated to Obina. "We've practically settled the negotiations with Besiktas, involving Kléberson. It seems they understand that the player can't afford the 3,2 million euros they're demanding, and the deal should be closed soon. We'll return to Turkey soon to sign the agreement that will allow us to sign a four- or five-year contract with him."

Obina will be tried this Thursday
Obina will only be able to play in the classic against Vasco if the sentence is less than what he has already served.
Flamengo's lawyer, Michel Assef Filho, will take action once again to try to reduce striker Obina's sentence, so that the player can participate in the classic against Vasco this Thursday.
“Obina will only be able to play if the penalty is less than what he has already served, that is, five games,” explained Michel Assef Filho.
As for a total acquittal, Michel Assef Filho does not believe in the possibility, but will try to downgrade article 253 (aggression) in which Obina was included to articles 255 (act of hostility) or 258 (attitude contrary to discipline or sporting morals in relation to a component of the opposing representation).
"I think a total acquittal is difficult, but I believe we can downgrade it to Article 255 or 258," said the lawyer.
Coach Joel Santana admitted that, if Obina is acquitted, he intends to use him during the classic against rival Vasco.
"If Obina is acquitted, he'll be included in the group. If I have a weapon like that, am I going to leave it at home? It would be a reward for him to return to the derby. We hope there's common sense in the trial, as there was for other players," said Joel Santana.
Roth vs. Joel: The Duel of the Clipboards
Vasco will play in a 3-6-1 formation and Flamengo in a 5-5 formation. Coaches and their tactics for the Clássico dos Milhões
André Casado, Nathan de Lima and Thiago Bokel
Joel Santana and his 5-5 formation: full-backs Léo Moura and Juan will play forward and support the midfield. Midfielders Ibson and Toró will take turns supporting and marking, with Cristian firmly in the middle.
In the current climate of modern football, tactical schemes have become crucial. And in the tactical clash between Joel Santana and Celso Roth, some new traps were created to try to surprise the opponent. Rubro-Negro has the lead, having already tested the new scheme against Paraná.
Until recently, Joel used the famous three-man defensive midfield formation. Rômulo played as a third defender, dropping to the right flank, leaving Fábio Luciano as a sweeper. In midfield, Cristian and Jaílton were tasked with protecting the defense, leaving Leonardo Moura and Juan solely focused on attacking, with no obligation to defend. Ibson or Toró would attack—as creative men—in a modern formation that Joel himself called 5-5.
With Jaílton's injury, Joel switched up the midfield. Cristian moved to the center as the first player in the sector, with Ibson and Toró playing together, a previously unlikely idea. On the wings, Léo Moura and Juan no longer move up the attack together.
Vasco's scheme
At Vasco, Celso Roth adopted a more offensive stance. With Amaral's red card against Botafogo, the coach reconsidered the idea of not fielding Perdigão and Andrade together, instead opting for immediate reserve Roberto Lopes. Now, Andrade will have to fill in for his suspended teammate. The big change, however, isn't that.
In Sunday's derby, Roth had Marcelinho assist Dário Conca in the creative playmaking. While he previously played with two strikers—Leandro Amaral and either Alan Kardec or Enílton—now Leandro is the only player up front. The full-backs also underwent changes. The Vasco da Gama coach noticed that Wagner Diniz and Rubens Júnior were being heavily targeted by the opposing coaches and decided to keep them in a bit longer.
However, Flamengo will be the first major rival against whom Roth will be able to unleash his full-backs, as they are both teams' main weapons. We won't know who will perform better until after the 90 minutes.
Juan receives plaque for 100 games at Fla

Maxi and Juan at yesterday's training session. In the detail, Juan and the commemorative plaque.
A key player in Flamengo's attack is left-back Juan. The team's top scorer with five goals and one of the competition's leading assist-scorers, he received a commemorative plaque after yesterday's training session at Gávea, marking his 100th appearance, which he reached in the team's last match against Paraná.
Very proud, Juan went to the stands, where he was presented with the “Vulture Warrior” plaque by the club’s fans.
"It's great news for me. I'm proud and very happy. I can't hide my satisfaction, but I can't lose focus, especially because their team is very strong," said Juan.
Regarding a possible transfer of the full-back abroad, Juan was categorical in denying any departure and even said that he would be very honored to complete another 100 games for Fla.
"It would be great. Playing 200 games for the club isn't for everyone," said the player.
As the full-back provides a lot of support, the club's left wing is one of Joel Santana's biggest concerns, but according to the coach, he has already found the players who can solve this problem.
"Our strategy is built with the players we have. We had difficulties because we don't have a player who can play with his left foot, but Toró and Ibson can play in that area without any problems," said Joel Santana.
Flamengo Day
Flamengo fans continue to have reason to celebrate. Yesterday's news was Mayor César Maia's declaration of "Flamengo Fan Day." The commemorative date will be October 28th—the same day as the club's patron saint, Saint Jude Thaddeus.
Flamengo defeats Villa Rio and leads Group A
In the fifth round of the OPG, Flamengo defeated Villa Rio 1-0 at Rua Bariri and leads Group A with 12 points. Now, the team faces Cabofriense on Saturday at Gávea. Previously scheduled for 15 p.m., the match may be moved to 11 a.m.
The bumpy pitch was a real handicap for both teams. Vander scored the winning goal, rebounding a Davidson shot that hit the crossbar. The match marked the return of midfielder Willian Amendoim.
Fla played with: Marcelinho, Davidson (Tambinha), Anderson Oliveira, Wellinton and Leó; Antônio, Vinícius Colombiano, Diguinho and Vander; Carlinhos (Peanut) and Diego Oliveira (Pedro Beda).
To keep the dream alive
Leandro Amaral and Arroz face off in a separate duel in the classic, which boosts their chances of winning the Libertadores
André Casado, Diego Marrul and Thiago Bokel
When they take the Maracanã pitch today at 21:45 p.m. for the final Rio derby of the year, the Vasco and Flamengo players will have to contend with the obligation to win, and above all, the mission of putting their clubs back in contention for a spot in next year's Copa Libertadores. To that end, one matchup promises to make all the difference: Leandro Amaral, the derbies' top scorer and Flamengo's tormentor, against Rodrigo Arroz, the young Flamengo defender who will attempt to replace the capable Fábio Luciano.
In São Januário, the order is to attack. Celso Roth himself gave his own explanation, albeit not very orthodox:
"The pessimist tries to defend himself, trying to secure a draw to avoid relegation. But the optimist, the one who goes all out and tries to win the game, will have a good chance of securing a spot in the Libertadores," he philosophized. And his weapons include Leandro. Vasco's top scorer in the championship with ten goals, has already scored six in the seven derbies he's started this year. He's also scored three times in the four matches he's faced against Flamengo.
For the red-and-black side, the new addition is young Rodrigo Arroz, who will be tasked with stopping Vasco's top scorer. Aware of his rival's quality, Arroz expressed his respect:
"He's a great player who doesn't usually waste opportunities and, therefore, requires special attention," he praised. The red-and-black defender was even launched by Vasco's current coach, Celso Roth, in 2005. When he learned that Arroz was confirmed as a starter, Roth made a point of praising him:
"He has many qualities, he scores well, and has good positioning. We'll have difficulties," he predicted.
Joel preferred to avoid comparisons to the latest classic:
"The game is different, we were severely short-handed. They said a lot, but everyone has to look after their own home," Celso Roth, who had criticized him in the last game, clearly remarked.
Jade is chosen to carry the torch
Gymnast Jade Barbosa will represent Brazil in the Olympic torch relay. She was chosen in an online vote, beating out swimmer Thiago Pereira, who was also participating in the poll.
But Brazilians won't have the opportunity to see her carrying the symbol of next year's Olympic Games. Unless they travel to Buenos Aires. The torch relay across the South American continent will take place in the Argentine capital. The event is scheduled for April 11th. In 2004, before the Athens Games, Brazil hosted the relay.
Jade, who has never been to the Olympics, was one of Brazil's standout performers at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in July of this year, when she won three medals: gold in the vault, silver in the team event and bronze in the floor exercise.
Thiago was nearly unbeatable at the Pan American Games. He won six gold medals (200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4x100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke, and 200m breaststroke), one silver medal (4x100m individual medley), and one bronze medal (100m backstroke). Both are already guaranteed a spot at the Chinese Games.
In total, 20 countries will participate in the torch relay. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games is scheduled for August 8th.

Flamengo vs Vasco: Classic of the little ones
On one side, Maxi (1,64m); on the other, Conca (1,67m); on the bench, Romário (1,69m)
José Luiz de Pinho and Martha Esteves
Rio - Evenly matched in rivalry and even in numbers—both have 43 points in the Brasileirão—Vasco and Flamengo will face off in today's derby at 21:45 p.m. at the Maracanã stadium, a showdown to determine who will continue to have a slim chance of securing a spot in the Copa Libertadores. The derby has been postponed from the seventh round due to the Pan American Games.
At Vasco, led by Argentine Darío Conca, the new addition will be on the bench: top scorer Romário. "Baixinho" asked coach Celso Roth to participate in the derby, even though he'll be starting on the bench.
Flamengo's short man is Argentinian and has won all six games he's played at Maracanã. Striker Maxi Biancucchi is friends with his compatriot Conca, but he's betting he'll come out on top.
Coach Joel Santana hasn't decided whether to start Renato Augusto, but admits he will play in the game. Rodrigo Arroz replaces the suspended Fábio Luciano.
"Romário is the man, but I'm his friend. Let him play, he just can't score," Joel pleads.
On the Cruzmaltino side, the coach's biggest concern is neutralizing Flamengo's full-backs, Leonardo Moura and Juan, the arch-rival's strong point. Roth believes he has the formula to neutralize both. "They are high-level players, and we need to reduce their space," he stated.
The fans promise to repeat the chants of love for their teams. The party has everything to be unforgettable.
Flamengo: The secret weapon is already well known
Rubro-Negro's full-backs don't mind being specially marked by rivals
Rio - The quickest way to reach the opponent's goal has been from the right. Or from the left. These are the moves of full-backs Leonardo Moura and Juan, the team's top scorers, each with five goals, who have helped Flamengo improve its position in the Brazilian Championship standings.
But there's no secret to it anymore. Rival teams have noticed the Rubro-Negro's strength and are focused on marking the two fullbacks more closely. But Juan isn't bothered. He has a way out of the trap.
"The key is to play the ball well, move around a lot, and create space for those behind you. That way, you open up the opposing defense and escape the marking," explains the left-back.
Defender Rodrigo Arroz, who will replace captain Fábio Luciano, has another concern. He spoke with Ronaldo Angelim about the difficult task of marking Vasco's skilled striker Leandro Amaral, who consistently scores goals for the red-and-blacks.
"We'll have to talk constantly to get our positioning right. We need to pay extra attention to Leandro Amaral's runs, as he's quite fast. If it's very difficult to stop him, the solution is to not let the ball reach his feet," explains Rodrigo Arroz.
The defender has already played three matches against Vasco as a professional and still doesn't know what it's like to lose. He's won three and won the Copa do Brasil against his rival. But he recognizes that each match has its own story, especially when it's one of the most intense rivalries in Brazilian football. He learned this early on, playing in the youth teams.
"I grew up here in Gávea and I know how important this matchup is for the fans. The rivalry is huge, and I hope to maintain my personal unbeaten streak," he said.
Juan also understands what beating Vasco means. For the fans, it feels like a title. For the players and coaching staff, it gives them the energy and morale to power through the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship. "It's worth much more than the three points," Juan summarizes.
Joel keeps an eye on the STJD, to count on Obina
Coach Joel Santana will be anxiously following Obina's new trial today, starting at 14 p.m., at the Superior Court of Justice (STJD). He's confident he'll have the striker on the bench tonight.
Lawyer Michel Assef Filho has decided to take the striker to trial, but he doesn't want him to testify. In the first trial, when he was suspended for 120 days, Obina got into trouble by admitting he wanted to "shoot Internacional's Índio in the neck." The strategy will be to downgrade the charge from Article 253 (assault) to Article 258 (acting against morals or discipline), which carries a suspension of one to 10 games. Having been out for five matches, the lawyer hopes he'll receive a lenient sentence and be able to return to the Gávea team today.
Vasco: The executioner will wait his turn
Having not played for four months, Romário remains on the bench, eager to revive his partnership with Leandro Amaral.
José Luiz de Pinho
Rio - Vasco will have, tonight at the Maracanã, a "killer" on the field, Leandro Amaral, and another on the bench, Romário, a longtime Flamengo tormentor. A duo more than used to finding the back of the net for their arch-rival, the red-and-blacks.
Although he is not in full form and has not played for more than four months — since June 14, in the 4-0 defeat to Botafogo —, Baixinho made himself available to Celso Roth to participate in the last Rio derby of his career, which he will finish at the end of the year.
Being a reserve is nothing new for Baixinho, who spent time on the bench at Fluminense under Alexandre Gama and at Vasco under Renato Gaúcho. But Roth won't hesitate to include him in the game if necessary.
"If Romário is there (among the reserves), he can be there (on the field). We just haven't decided under what circumstances he'll be able to play," Roth said after speaking with Baixinho.
"How did the conversation go? That's our decision. But when a player of Romário's caliber makes himself available to help, we have to take it into account," the coach commented.
Before announcing the decision, Roth spoke with president Eurico Miranda on the bench at São Januário while the players played a pickup game. Romário left training without giving an interview, but had already announced on a TV show that he intended to at least be a substitute for the match against Flamengo.
For Roth, even though he won't start the game, Baixinho will be crucial for Vasco. "He's already a key player because of his role as a role model and the experience he imparts to the younger players. And he'll be an added attraction for the derby," he believes.
Finally, Andrade will be the starter
Certain that only a victory will bring Vasco closer to a Copa Libertadores berth, Celso Roth decided to be bold. Instead of Roberto Lopes, who was reviled by the fans, the coach will field Andrade in place of the suspended Amaral.
"Some components of this classic make me choose him," said the coach, who has always been reluctant to field Andrade alongside Perdigão, believing they both perform the same role, despite the fans' wishes.
One of the reasons for fielding Andrade, an excellent free-kick taker, is the chance of a victory with a set-piece goal. Rubens Júnior, who served a suspension against Botafogo, returns to the side in place of Eduardo.

Vasco and Flamengo play a classic to get excited\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Tied in the Brazilian Championship standings with 43 points and a game in hand, Vasco and Flamengo take to the field this Thursday in a delayed match of the seventh round. Both teams are excited for the "Clássico dos Milhões." Vasco, who had been without a win in the competition for eight games, managed to beat Botafogo last Sunday. A day earlier, the Rubro-Negros also ended a five-month winless streak away from home with a triumph over Paraná.
For Vasco, coach Celso Roth is still trying to win the fans' trust. Last Sunday, the coach was heavily heckled by Vasco fans during his victory over Botafogo. About to face off against Flamengo for the second time since arriving at São Januário, Celso Roth is aware of the importance of the match.
"Of course, a Vasco and Flamengo match is different. I've worked for both teams and know what that's like. It's a special derby in every way, approached differently by both clubs. It will be an electrifying and very difficult game," commented the coach.
The hero of Vasco's last victory, defender Jorge Luiz knows the celebration will only be complete if Vasco also manages to beat its main rival. That's why the player is swearing by his full attention for the derby.
"Now it's another important derby, where we again have to excel, so we have to go in with a lot of focus. If we can kill the game, we will. We can't lose this derby. Any match we win will bring us closer to the Libertadores. Both teams are thinking about going in to win. Whoever has the most determination and tactical superiority will win the match," said Jorge Luiz.
Although pleased with his team's performance in the last game, Celso Roth will have to make changes for this Thursday's derby. After being sent off against Botafogo, midfielder Amaral will be unavailable and will be replaced by Andrade in Vasco's midfield. Reserve striker Enilton, who also received a red card, is also out. Left-back Rubens Júnior served a suspension and is expected to return in place of youngster Eduardo.
Changes are also part of Flamengo's lineup for this derby. Unable to field captain Fábio Luciano, who received his third yellow card against Paraná, coach Joel Santana confirmed that Rodrigo Arroz will be given another opportunity in the Flamengo defense. The player has no qualms about entering a game with such fierce rivalry.
"I'm ready. I'm happy with the opportunity to play against an important and tough opponent. It's great to face Vasco. Both teams have won their last matches, and fans who go to Maracanã will see an excellent match," Rodrigo emphasized.
If Rodrigo Arroz's entry into defense is confirmed, Flamengo's coach will take a question to the Maracanã locker room: with good performances in training this week, Renato Augusto could be selected to start in place of Toró.
"Renato Augusto is a player with great strength, fight, and determination. His performance motivates everyone. My only question for the game is whether he'll start or start on the bench. I'll only announce the lineup at the last minute. The rest of the team is confirmed," said Joel, who remains without defensive midfielder Jailton (injured) and midfielder Roger (recovering from an injury).
Even with the assertion that Flamengo hasn't completely shaken off the specter of relegation, the red-and-black coach warns about the dangers of the derby. And like his rival, Joel Santana also recognizes that a victory could bring the Gávea team a more relaxed start in the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship.
"If we win this derby, we'll be in a very good position. It's a dangerous game, but a win would give us more morale and character for the rest of the competition."
Obina awaits trial to play in the classic
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - With trial scheduled for this Thursday, Obina could be Flamengo's big surprise for this Thursday's derby against Vasco. If his sentence is reduced, he will play against Vasco, according to coach Joel Santana. The excited coach called for consistency from the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD). "If Obina is released, he will play. We hope common sense prevails, as it has in other trials. It would be a joy to have Obina on the field," he declared.
The center forward was suspended for 120 days after allegedly assaulting Internacional defender Índio. According to the club's lawyer, Michel Assef Filho, the plan is to disqualify the offense under Article 253 of the CBJD. "The defense strategy will be the same. We will try to have the incident dismissed as assault. If the penalty is reduced, he will be cleared to play," he stated.
This Wednesday, the player participated in a lively game, winning 5-3. His team also included Kléberson and Leonardo Moura, among others.
Joel Santana confident for the classic
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - After leading a set-piece training session at Gávea, Flamengo coach Joel Santana expressed optimism for this Thursday's derby against Vasco. According to him, Flamengo has a good chance of taking all three points against their rivals if they maintain the form they've been playing in recent matches. "We have to try to play the same kind of football we've been playing. Tomorrow (Thursday) will be a tough derby, given the fierce rivalry. We have to be fully focused and play well to win," the coach declared.
Rodrigo Arroz, who will play alongside Ronaldo Angelim in defense, is also confident. "I'm ready for the derby. I prepared well this week and I hope to live up to the coach's confidence on the field," he stated.
With a win on Thursday, Flamengo will reach 46 points, taking seventh place from the Cruzmaltina team. Grêmio, last in the top four of the Brazilian Championship, has 4 points.
Roger could return against Grêmio
Gazeta Press
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Cleared by Flamengo's medical department after tests showed nothing, midfielder Roger will be able to return to the team on Sunday, when the Rubro-Negro hosts Grêmio at Maracanã for the 4th round of the Brazilian Championship. Called 'slipper' by some Flamengo fans due to the repeated physical problems that have kept him out of the team, Roger returned to the Rubro-Negro for the match against São Paulo on October XNUMXth, but at the time complained of thigh pain. For this reason, the midfielder missed the matches against Fluminense and Paraná, and will also be out for this Thursday's derby against Vasco.
Roger's starting lineup against Grêmio will only be determined by coach Joel Santana after Thursday's derby against Vasco. The coach will monitor the player's performance in training on Friday and Saturday.

Mayor of Rio de Janeiro declares "Flamengo Fan's Day"
From the Placar Agency\ In Rio de Janeiro\
The Official Gazette published "Flamengo Fan Day" this Tuesday. The decree was issued by Rio de Janeiro Mayor César Maia. The date will always be celebrated on October 28th. The law was created by Councilman Jorge Mauro (DEM). It was signed into law on Monday.
In addition to "Flamengo Fan Day," the club also celebrates "Flamengo Day." It is always celebrated on November 17th, the official date of the club's founding.
This Thursday, Flamengo, with 43 points, will attempt to climb even higher in the Brazilian Championship. Flamengo faces Vasco at 21:45 p.m. (Brasília time) at Maracanã in a postponed match from the seventh round.
Jaílton regrets his injury, but guarantees that he will regain his place at Fla
From the Placar Agency\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Injured in his right foot, midfielder Jaílton was ruled out of Flamengo's next match, the derby against Vasco, this Thursday, at 21:45 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, in a postponed match of the seventh round of the Brazilian Championship. The player will miss the Rubro-Negro for the second consecutive time, as he did not play in the 1-0 victory over Paraná Clube, on Saturday, at Durival Brito.
Saddened to face this problem just as he's experiencing his best moment, Jailton laments missing such an important game. However, he assures he's motivated to quickly regain his starting position.
"It was really annoying. Even more so because I was on a really good run and was feeling more and more confident. Unfortunately, I was already out of the game against Paraná and won't be able to play again. Despite the pain, I'm already in the final stages of treatment and will follow it to the letter to be ready for the weekend's game," he said, referring to the match against Grêmio, on Sunday, at 18:10 pm (Brasília time), for the 32nd round of the national competition.
Jaílton was injured in the classic against Fluminense (2-0 victory for Fluminense), on October 7th, at Maracanã, after being stepped on his right foot.
For midfielder Cristian, the classic against Vasco is "unique"
From the Placar Agency\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo and Vasco are known as the "Clássico dos Milhões." For Cristian, playing in a match like this is something to add to his resume. In fact, the Flamengo midfielder is very excited for this Thursday's match at 21:45 pm (Brasília time) at Maracanã Stadium, still in the seventh round of the Brazilian Championship.
"The Flamengo and Vasco derby is unique. It really is different. I can say this because I played in the first round game (a 1-1 draw). We're going to try to get the three points," he said in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
With 43 points and in ninth place, Flamengo needs to win to continue dreaming of a spot in the next Copa Libertadores. Currently, Grêmio is last in the standings, with 51.
"We need to think little by little. There's no point in imagining the Libertadores without winning our matches," Cristian concluded.

With Romário on the bench, Vasco faces Fla
Tied in the Brasileirão with 43 points, teams fight to get closer to the top of the table
Fred Huber and Joana Tiso
With 43 points in the Brazilian Championship, Vasco and Flamengo will face off in the Clássico dos Milhões this Thursday at 21:45 p.m. Whoever wins the match, which will once again draw a large crowd to the Maracanã, will overtake their rival in the standings and take a big step forward in their pursuit of the top spots. The match marks Romário's return after four months away. He will start the game on the bench.
The first duel between the teams ended in a 1-1 draw (see the video above), despite Vasco's dominance. In the clubs' history in the competition, Vasco has the advantage, with 15 wins, 12 draws, and 12 losses.
Joel happy with Romário's presence
Souza is Flamengo's hope for goals against Vasco, the striker's former club. At Flamengo, coach Joel Santana has only one question regarding his starting lineup. With Renato Augusto's medical clearance, the coach isn't sure whether he'll start from the start or sit on the bench. He could replace Toró or even Maxi. The manager is still awaiting Obina's trial, which has a chance of having his 120-day sentence reduced and being included in the squad.
On the other hand, Joel will be without his suspended captain Fabio Luciano, who will be replaced by Rodrigo Arroz. Jaílton, with pain in his right foot, is ruled out. In addition to the team's formation, the coach didn't shy away from questions about Romário's presence in the opposing team. He assures that he's happy that the striker is included in the squad.
"The important thing is that Romário is "the man," and I'm his friend. It's good for the derby; it has to be a celebration; he's already scored over a thousand goals. He's a great artist; he just has to participate; there's no problem at all," he says.
Left-back Juan wasn't happy with the team's performance in the first match, nor with the statements made by the Vasco players, who claimed they were far superior on the field. He hopes to turn things around with an indisputable victory.
"Playing against Vasco is already a source of great motivation; we know how important this game is. They said everything they wanted after the first game; we'll do everything we can to get a win," he says.
Andrade should play alongside Perdigão
Romário will be available on the bench for Celso Roth against Flamengo. At Gigante da Colina, Romário's return to the field after more than four months is seen as a good sign. However, his return risks being merely symbolic, as the 1.002-goal scorer could be on the bench the entire time.
"It's very important when a player of Romário's caliber is willing to help, even if it's not on the field. It will be an added attraction for this unique derby," says Roth.
Vasco will have the return of left-back Rubens Junior, who served a suspension in the victory over Botafogo, and will be without Amaral, who was sent off in the derby against Alvinegro. This leaves Andrade and Perdigão poised to form the dream defensive midfield duo for Vasco fans. Midfielder Marcelinho, who stood out in the last round, remains on the team.
Alongside Marcelinho will be Leandro Amaral, Cruzmaltino's top scorer this season and scorer of two goals in this year's three Clássicos dos Milhões.
"It's a league in itself. No one wants to lose so they don't have to hear jokes the next day," says Flamengo's tormentor, who dreams of scoring his third goal of the year.

Joel Santana recalls injury issues in first match against Vasco\ After Wednesday's lively kick-off match at Gávea Stadium, coach Joel Santana spoke about his expectations for Flamengo's derby against Vasco, this Thursday at Maracanã. The coach believes the best way for the team to emerge victorious is to maintain the performance they've shown in recent Brasileirão matches. He revealed that he hasn't yet decided on a lineup for the match. Joel isn't sure whether to start Renato Augusto from the start or use him later in the match.\
"A classic is a classic, but we have to play the kind of football we're playing. We're having a good time preparing for this game. It wasn't just hotel chatter; we still have a few things to resolve before the match," he says.
Despite recognizing that the derby against Vasco has a special flavor for all Flamengo fans, the red-and-black manager preferred not to create a final atmosphere for the match.
"It's not a ten-point game. We have to play a good game; it's difficult for a team to maintain balance for long," he says.
Joel commented on the first match between the two teams in the first round, a 1-1 draw in a game dominated by Vasco (see the video below). The coach acknowledged that the opponent was better, but noted that Flamengo had several players missing, including striker Maxi Biancucchi.
"If some of their players were injured before the game, like we were, they'd have problems too. But I think it's unethical to keep commenting on others. Everyone solves their own problems at home," he concludes.
Juan receives tribute from the fans
Left-back, who renewed his contract until 2010, completed one hundred games for Mengão

Left-back Juan received a commemorative plaque from one of Flamengo's fan groups on Wednesday in Gávea, marking his 100th appearance for the red-and-black team in the last round of matches. Before the derby against Vasco da Gama this Thursday at 21:45 p.m. at Maracanã, the player is expected to receive a tribute from the board.
The number 6, one of the team's standout players this season, was very pleased with the recognition of his work.
"I'm happy with the fans' recognition. Support is always important; it gives me even more motivation to wear this jersey and dedicate myself even more. I hope to play many more games for the club," he says.
Juan said that one of the most memorable moments of his time at Flamengo was the goal against Vasco in the 2006 Copa do Brasil final, when the Rubro-Negro defeated their rivals and won the title (see the video above). The full-back recently renewed his contract with the club until 2010.
Joel hopes to count on Obina in the classic
The athlete has a new trial at the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) and, if his sentence is reduced, he could remain on the bench.
Fred Huber
Obina, who was suspended for 120 days for elbowing Internacional defender Índio in a match for the 25th round of the Brasileirão, will be tried again this Thursday at 14 p.m. Flamengo's defense has filed an appeal to reduce the player's suspension. (Watch the video of Obina's 120-day suspension)
Depending on the outcome of the trial, coach Joel Santana guarantees that Anjo Negro will be included.
"If he's acquitted, he'll go back to the group. It would be a reward for the classic: having Obina on one side and, who knows, Romário on the other," says Joel Santana.
As the striker has already been out for five matches, if his sentence is reduced to a smaller number of games, he could at least be part of Flamengo's bench for the classic against Vasco, also this Thursday, at 21:45 pm.
"If the sentence is less than what he's already served (five games), he'll be able to play. The defense strategy remains the same: try to disqualify the incident as assault. Coelho (the Atlético-MG full-back who hit Cruzeiro midfielder Kerlon) had his sentence reduced by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), but his case can't be compared to Obina's, as they are very different," says Flamengo's lawyer, Michel Assef Filho.
Obina was reported for violating article 253 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (committing physical aggression against a referee or his assistants, or against any other participant in the sporting event).
Fla wins another in the juniors
Vander's goal guarantees victory over Villa Rio, on Rua Bariri, for the OPG Cup
Eduardo Peixoto
Flamengo struggled, but defeated Villa Rio on Wednesday afternoon. In a match valid for the fifth round of the Otávio Pinto Guimarães Cup, the red-and-black youth team won 1-0 at Rua Bariri.
The only goal of the match was scored by Vânder in the 11th minute of the second half. He received a cross from Davidson and shot to score.
- For me, this goal gives me a lot of confidence, as I hadn't done well in the last few games - declares the hero of the match.
This is Flamengo's fourth victory in five matches in the competition, the defending champion. Their only loss was to Nova Iguaçu. The team returns to action next Saturday against Cabofriense in Gávea. The time has not yet been decided.

Vasco and Flamengo face off at the Maracanã on a high note
Teams are coming off a victory in the last round and dreaming of the Libertadores
Conca and Leonardo Moura are responsible for the creation of Vasco and Flamengo, respectively
Fred Gomes and Rodrigo Mendes
Buoyed by victories in the final round of the Brazilian Championship, Vasco da Gama and Flamengo will face off this Thursday at 21:45 pm (Brasília time) at the Maracanã Stadium in the Clássico dos Milhões, postponed from the seventh round due to the Pan American Games. Even though they're far from the Copa Libertadores qualifying zone, both teams are still dreaming of the premier club competition in the Americas. Vasco da Gama is in eighth place with 43 points, the same score as Flamengo (ninth), who trails behind with one fewer win than their rival.
This will be the fourth meeting between the teams in 2007. In the Guanabara Cup semifinal, Flamengo prevailed on penalties (3-1) after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. In the Rio Cup, Vasco won 3-0, with a saving by Bruno preventing Romário's thousandth goal. The first game between the teams in this year's Brasileirão ended in a 1-1 draw.
In their bid to beat Flamengo, Vasco will be counting on the return of left-back Rubens Júnior, who served a suspension against Glorioso. This means Eduardo returns to the bench after making a makeshift replacement for the starter.
On the other hand, coach Celso Roth will be without midfielder Amaral, who was sent off against Botafogo. In his place will be Andrade, who won the challenge with Roberto Lopes. Another player to receive a red card was striker Enilton, who will be out of action on the bench.
And it's precisely on the bench that the Cruzmaltino team's biggest attraction may be. Having not played in over four months, Romário has a chance to be available for Roth to use throughout the match. The shorty is recovering from surgery on his right ankle and has already stated his desire to return against Flamengo.
- I still don't know if I'll play, but I intend to at least be on the bench - said Baixinho in an interview with Rede Globo.
To avoid ending a year without a win over their rival—a feat not seen since 2002—Flamengo is looking to maintain its positive record at Maracanã in the Brasileirão. Flamengo has won nine, drawn five, and lost only two of its matches at the stadium. Furthermore, the team will be counting on the return of Renato Augusto. It remains to be seen whether the 19-year-old will start or not.
Jaílton, with pain in his right foot, Roger, recovering fitness, and Leonardo, with an adductor problem in his left leg, will be out for Flamengo. Fábio Luciano and Léo Medeiros, suspended for their third yellow card, will also miss the match.
Flamengo's starting forwards for this Thursday's game are also expected to find the net again. Maxi hasn't scored since August 23, when Flamengo thrashed Juventude 4-0. Souza, meanwhile, hasn't scored since the 3-1 victory over Cruzeiro on September 12.
Joel is rooting for Romário to play in the classic
Flamengo coach praises Baixinho's importance to football
When asked about Romário's possible selection for Vasco, coach Joel Santana surprised everyone and stated that he would like to see Baixinho on the field against Fla.
"Let him play this game, it's good. Romário is the man, and I'm his friend," he admitted.
Joel Santana emphasized the importance of Romário for a classic like this and for football in general.
"Football is a celebration, and Romário is a performer. Let him play, it's good for everyone," he emphasized.
César Maia declares Flamengo fan day

On the eve of facing its biggest rival, Flamengo received a gift. Rio de Janeiro Mayor César Maia declared "Flamengo Fan's Day." The new commemorative date in the "red-and-black calendar" will be celebrated every October 28th, the feast day of Saint Jude Thaddeus, the club's patron saint.
The "Flamengo Fan's Day" law, created by councilor Jorge Mauro (DEM), was sanctioned on Monday and published in the Official Gazette this Tuesday.
"Flamengo Fan Day" is yet another tribute to Brazil's Most Beloved, which already has "Flamengo Day" - celebrated on November 17, the official date of the club's founding and the retirement of Flamengo's number 12 shirt, approved on October 10, 2007.
Absences for the classic do not shake Joel
Léo Medeiros and Fábio Luciano are suspended and will not face Vasco
Aware that a points-based championship has its pitfalls, Flamengo coach Joel Santana preferred not to lament the suspensions of Léo Medeiros and Fábio Luciano for the classic.
"That's football. It's very difficult to repeat a lineup. But we have good players who I'm sure will do the job."
Captain Fábio Luciano will be replaced by Rodrigo Arroz, who grew up in Gávea and is used to facing classics since the youth divisions.
Obina may appear in this Thursday's classic
The attacker will be tried on the same day and hopes to have his punishment reduced.
With his trial scheduled for this Thursday, striker Obina and everyone at Gávea are living in a moment of anticipation. If his sentence is reduced to just five games, he will be able to play in the derby against Vasco da Gama on the same day at Maracanã.
- If the penalty is less than what he has already served, the player will be able to play in the classic - said Michel Assef Filho, the club's lawyer, to Rádio Tupi.
Michel Assef will try to downgrade article 253 (aggression) in which Obina was punished to articles 255 (act of hostility) or 258 (attitude contrary to discipline or sporting morals in relation to a component of the opposing representation).
Knowing the news, coach Joel Santana is already thinking about taking the idol of the red-black fans with the group to this Thursday's classic.
"I have a weapon like that and I'm going to leave it at home? I hope common sense prevails, as it did with other players. Besides, it would be a reward for the derby, since Baixinho could be on the other side," said the coach, referring to Romário.
Rice will ask the judge for attention with Wágner Diniz
Flamengo defender claims Vasco's full-back often simulates fouls
Replacing captain Fabio Luciano, who is suspended for Thursday's derby against Vasco, Flamengo defender Rodrigo Arroz revealed he is ready for the responsibility and will try to play the ball to avoid any traps from the opponent.
For the red-and-black player, Vasco's right-back Wágner Diniz often throws himself into plays to force refereeing errors in his team's favor. He hopes referee Evandro Rogério Roman will be strict with this type of situation.
"Before the game, I'll speak to the referee to warn him about this. But the most important thing is to mark the ball to avoid any problems."
Regarding the choice of Joel, who put him in the starting lineup, Rodrigo Arroz showed calm and said he had the notion of a classic like Flamengo x Vasco.
"I'm ready for this game. I grew up here in Gávea and I know what this rivalry with Vasco is like. I hope to play well and for Flamengo to come away with the victory," revealed the defender, who stated that the conversation will be crucial to make up for the lack of chemistry.
Obina, from Bahia, will receive the title of citizen of Rio de Janeiro

Even though he's been suspended by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) and has his trial scheduled for this Thursday, Obina continues to receive tributes. Jorge Mauro, the councilman responsible for establishing "Flamengo Fan Day," announced that he will award the player the title of Honorary Citizen of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro on the 28th, the date on which the new day of the "red-and-black calendar" is celebrated.
"Our intention is to present this title to Obina on the 28th, because he really connected with the Flamengo fans and deserves the award. There's no better time than on Flamengo Fans' Day," Jorge explained.
The title of Rio de Janeiro citizen was already granted to the player after the approval of Legislative Decree No. 628/2007 on August 28 of this year. Now, all that remains is to deliver it to him.
Read the decree in full:
Legislative Decree No. 628/2007 on 28/08/2007
GRANTS THE TITLE OF HONORARY CITIZEN OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO TO PROFESSIONAL SOCCER PLAYER MANUEL DE BRITO FILHO - OBINA.
AUTHOR: COUNCILMAN JORGE MAURO
Art. 1 - The title of Honorary Citizen of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro is hereby granted to Professional Football Player Manoel de Brito Filho - Obina.
Art. 2 - This Legislative Decree shall come into force on the date of its publication.
Relegation still worries Renato Augusto
Player wants to return to play and help Flamengo in the Brazilian Championship
After suffering a muscle injury in his left thigh on September 16th in the match against Vasco, midfielder Renato Augusto could return to the Flamengo squad for this Thursday's match against Vasco. The player commented on the Flamengo team's current situation in the Brazilian Championship.
"We have to move away from the relegation zone once and for all to breathe a sigh of relief. Don't take a step too far and forget about reality. I went through a difficult time, but I received support from friends, family, and even the press, and I'm ready to help Flamengo."
Renato Augusto recalled that he started playing in midfield, but if Joel Santana needs him, he sees no problem in joining the attack.
- My original position is midfield, but I have no problem playing attack. I can adapt.
Coach Joel Santana was pleased with the red-black midfielder's performance in training on Tuesday, but knows that the player is not yet fit to play 90 minutes.
