While Flamengo's performance in the Guanabara Cup remains calm on the field, it faced a day of uncertainty off it yesterday. With 48 hours to go before facing América, the club found itself with no guarantees that the match would take place. The Rio de Janeiro Federation confirmed the match at the Engenhão stadium, but has yet to meet the demands of Botafogo, the stadium's owner. On another front, Flamengo may be just days away from seeing a 24-year partnership with Petrobras terminated. Following the company's official statement, Flamengo president Márcio Braga promised to meet with the board next Thursday to discuss the removal of the sponsor's brand from the uniforms.
Since early January, Flamengo has claimed to have more advantageous proposals and has been asking Petrobras for a salary adjustment, which, by contract, can only occur based on official indexes. Based on these indexes, the agreement would have yielded Flamengo R$2008 million in 15,6. On January 16, the club submitted a proposal for a salary adjustment of R$23,5 million.
Yesterday, the company published a statement saying it was surprised by the salary adjustment request and that it made Flamengo a counteroffer of R$16,2 million per year. It expects Flamengo to make a decision by the end of Carnival. Besides demonstrating a lack of interest in the adjustment, Petrobras states that "the exposure of a company's brand without contractual support is the sole and exclusive responsibility of the person exposing it." Currently, there is no contract between Flamengo and Petrobras for 2008.
"Under these terms, they're breaking the contract. If that's their intention, we'll no longer display the brand on the shirt, and I think the contract will be terminated," said Márcio Braga. "But this requires a board meeting to decide."
Former allies, Flamengo and Botafogo disagree over Engenhão
At the Federation, another duel. With 48 hours to go before tomorrow's match against América at Engenhão, the Federation and clubs were still discussing the terms of use of the stadium with Botafogo. The point is that the State Championship schedule stipulated the game at Botafogo's home ground even before the competition began. Tickets, in fact, are already on sale.
Botafogo claimed not to have been consulted and, in addition to a document signed by Flamengo and América, assuming responsibility for damages to the stadium, demanded R$80 in rent. After a four-hour meeting, the amount was reduced to R$45. Flamengo and América only agreed to pay a maximum of R$37, the amount they would have spent on Maracanã. The Federation decided to cover the remainder. Since the clubs refused to sign the liability agreement, it is seeking insurance to cover Botafogo's expenses. This, according to the club's president, Bebeto de Freitas, does not guarantee the stadium's opening.
"Botafogo needs to be certain who will bear any burden. Therefore, it demands joint liability from the Federation, Flamengo, and América. It needs all three to sign the document listing the necessary guarantees," Bebeto stated.
The president of the Federation, Rubens Lopes, tried to explain why the issue only began to be discussed yesterday.
"The schedule was public knowledge. Botafogo's intransigence came late," Lopes said, evasive. While noting that the rules allow Botafogo to requisition stadiums from its affiliates, he avoided giving full guarantees that the game would be played. "I wouldn't want to impose anything, and I don't believe Botafogo will lock the gates. It's very difficult not to have a game."
The controversy exposed a rift between Flamengo and Botafogo.
"We didn't ask to play at the Engenhão. No one can presume that Flamengo fans are a bunch of thugs," said Michel Assef, chairman of Flamengo's Board of Directors, who produced 200 pamphlets urging fans to exercise restraint. "If there's no game, the State Championship is ruined."
The game, scheduled for Sunday at Maracanã, was transferred to Engenhão at the request of the Military Police, due to the policing, on the same day, of the Samba Schools parade.

After hours of meetings at the Rio Football Federation between the organization's president, Rubens Lopes, and representatives from Flamengo, América, and Botafogo, a decision was expected regarding the venue for tomorrow's 16 p.m. match between Flamengo and América. Theoretically, the Engenhão stadium will host this famous derby, but there are still some details to be discussed.
Early last night, Ferj confirmed the match at the stadium, but for this to actually happen, Botafogo president Bebeto de Freitas is demanding a financial guarantee to release the team. Flamengo, through its board chairman Michel Assef, refuses to provide this guarantee.
"The Federation forced us to play at Engenhão. We're not asking for anything. If it were up to Flamengo, Maracanã would host this match. Bebeto demanded several guarantees that we didn't agree with. We'll be at the stadium, and if Engenhão is open, we'll play. Now, if it's closed, we'll complain to the Federation," said Michel Assef.
From a security standpoint, the Gepe commander, Major João Busnello, assured that there will be no problems: "Our planning was made 15 days ago. We will have 200 Gepe men inside the stadium. The Municipal Guard will provide support outside. In addition, we will hold new meetings with fans, who will be escorted to and from the stadium. If there is any problem, it will be contained by the police," he threatened.
Flamengo has committed to distributing flyers to deter vandalism. It was also determined that 19.900 tickets will be made available, costing R$20 (R$10 half-price). Sales will be made today, from 11 a.m. to 17 p.m., at the Gávea and Laranjeiras headquarters, Maracanã ticket office 8, and RioSampa (Nova Iguaçu).
With this, Flamengo achieved at least one victory, by not being directly responsible for any confusion that may occur in the stadium.

Fan Toró, who scored the winning goal against Macaé, added fuel to the fire by declaring that Flamengo is too big for the stadium. "The Engenhão isn't for our fans. It's an average stadium that can't handle that kind of power. Our home is the Maracanã, a big stadium, with the personality and size of our fans," he quipped.
Diego Tardelli named for the game against América

Finally, the day has arrived for striker Diego Tardelli to parade before the red-and-black fans. As promised by the club's fitness coach, Ronaldo Torres, the player has been cleared for this Saturday's match against América at the Engenhão stadium.
Tardelli has been training normally with the Flamengo squad, but he's unlikely to start the match. He came expecting to compete for a spot in attack, but during training sessions, he's been playing further back, fulfilling virtually the same role as Toró.
The striker spoke to JORNAL DOS SPORTS about his expectations for his debut for the club with the biggest fan base in the country.
"I'm already in the squad and confident. Just being able to concentrate for the game makes me very happy. I hope to start off on the right foot. I'm hoping to score a goal," said the striker.
To boost the club's confidence, Tardelli usually brings good luck when he debuts for a team. The striker recalled his first appearance for São Paulo in the 2-0 victory over Coritiba at Couto Pereira on July 9, 2003.
"I only came on for ten minutes, but I was able to participate well in the game. We beat Coritiba, I made some good passes and I hope it's the same against América," recalled the striker.
Joel's right-hand man, Ronaldo Torres, assured that if the coach so wishes, Diego Tardelli could play the entire match without any problems. The fitness coach warned that despite arriving at Flamengo with a minor right ankle injury, the striker is already on par with his teammates.
"Tardelli, as I promised, is now available for the match. He could even play 90 minutes, as he is already working normally with the other players in the group," said Ronaldo.
Petrobras does not increase sponsorship offer
Flamengo's contract renewal with Petrobras is still far from being finalized. Petrobras issued an official statement yesterday, stating that on November 12, 2007, a proposal was made for a R$15,7 million increase, with an additional R$500 in the event of qualification for the Copa Libertadores.
However, Flamengo rejected this proposal, and it was agreed that the new contract would be worth R$15,6 million, with investments also in Olympic sports. After finalizing the details of the renewal, Flamengo called a meeting on January 9th to request an increase to R$23,5 million/year, a proposal that was vetoed by the state-owned company, which offered a raise to R$16,2 million.
Petrobras reiterated that it stood by Flamengo during its worst moments and, even so, did not ask for a reduction in the values, and also recalled that it had no responsibility for the club using its brand on the shirt, even without a contract.
Marketing vice president Ricardo Hinrichsen admitted that the saga is far from over: "We're waiting until mid-February to resolve this. We haven't reached a common denominator yet," the executive explained.
STJD denies Flamengo's appeal to have Gavilán
Midfielder Gávilan is out of the Guanabara Cup. The suspension requested by lawyer Michel Assef Filho to reduce the athlete's sentence for elbowing midfielder Valdivia last year was denied by the Superior Court of Sports Justice. Gavilán will only be able to play in national competitions after February 16th, but he is cleared for the Copa Libertadores debut on the 13th.
Gávilan commented on the suspension this Thursday and said he preferred not to criticize the court so as not to further jeopardize his situation.
"I'm upset because I play football for a living. I'm training with my new teammates, but it's not the same. I still have two weeks to go before I can play again. I have an opinion about what's happening, but I prefer not to say anything so that those words aren't used against me," lamented Gavilán.
Oldest Favorite - Obina celebrated his 25th birthday yesterday in his favorite way: scoring goals. In yesterday's training match at Gávea, between Flamengo's reserves and CFZ, the fans' favorite scored a hat trick in the 6-0 rout. Dream for Ronaldo remains alive at Fla
Flamengo's dream of signing striker Ronaldo Fenômeno isn't over yet. This Thursday, Ricardo Hinrichsen, vice president of marketing and a member of the management team responsible for convincing Milan to sell the player, confirmed that after Carnival he will meet with Ronaldo's representative, Fabiano Farah, to make a new offer.
"We should talk to his representative after this Carnival period. Flamengo is still interested in seeing him as a member of the club in the Copa Libertadores. We haven't given up on him," Ricardo Hinrichsen revealed.
Milan, which has a contract with the striker until June 30th of this year, has already refused several times the player's request to come to Flamengo.

"I'm back as a soccer player and doing what I love most in life. I felt uncontrollable joy. I'm very happy that this day has come, and here at Flamengo. It's a new life. I want to work and get into the rhythm of the others," says the five-time world champion.
Kléberson came on in the second half and had a reasonable performance. Coach Joel Santana urged patience with the player and said he intends to gradually introduce Kléberson into the team.
Joel Santana praises Macaé and gives a warning to Vasco and Botafogo
Flamengo worked hard to defeat Macaé 1-0 last Wednesday night at Maracanã Stadium. The red-and-black team struggled against an opponent that defended well and used some quick counterattacks. After the match, coach Joel Santana was full of praise for the team from the Lagos Region, which had already tied with Fluminense 2-2 in the third round.
"Today (Wednesday) we had a very good opponent. Macaé has an excellent team and it was a tough game. Flamengo's coach also took the opportunity to praise Tita, who manages Macaé. "Tita is doing a good job. You can write it down, he'll be one of the greatest coaches in Brazil," Joel said.

Rio - At 1,71m tall, Toró was still celebrating yesterday the rare header that gave his team the victory over Macaé. His short stature, however, doesn't prevent him from seeing the grandeur of Flamengo's fans. For him, the Engenhão stadium, where Flamengo will face América tomorrow at 16pm in the State Championship, is too small to be considered—even for just one day—the home of the Gávea club.
Even unintentionally, Toró simultaneously boosted the red-and-black fans' morale while diminishing the black-and-white fans. "The Engenhão stadium is average; it's not for our fans, who have a lot of power. Flamengo is bigger than that. Our home is the Maracanã," said Toró, who is increasingly establishing himself as a starter.
Yesterday, the starters only did recovery work. The concern now is yellow cards. Souza, Toró, Jônatas, and Juan each have two yellow cards. For tomorrow afternoon's game, Diego Tardelli may be allowed to sit on the bench.
PETROBRAS REBATE
After the club demanded millions more to renew its contract with Petrobras, the company issued an official statement yesterday indicating that the relationship could sour. The statement states that last year, the club made a proposal of R$15,7 million, with an additional R$500 if it qualified for the Copa Libertadores.
On January 9, 2008, however, Flamengo surprised with a new proposal: R$23,5 million per year, increasing the agreed amount by 50,6%. The counteroffer was R$16,2 million.
The company also says that, when the team was struggling, it never asked for a reduction in fees, and expects a response until after Carnival. Flamengo says it is only inquiring about other interested parties.
Everyone wants to face Flu
Players like Íbson and Renato Augusto made it clear that, even with early qualification for the semifinals of the Taça Guanabara, they would like to play in the remaining matches, especially against Fluminense on the 10th. To guarantee their spot, Rubro-Negro needs to beat América tomorrow and hope that Boavista and Cardoso Moreira stumble against Fluminense and Volta Redonda, respectively.
Joel Santana admits to the idea of fielding a mixed team because some players are suffering from physical fatigue, such as Fábio Luciano and Obina. Rodrigo (still overweight), Kléberson, and Diego Tardelli need to regain rhythm. Ferj promises insurance against damages, but Botafogo only releases the stadium with guarantees

Rio - The controversy surrounding the Flamengo-América match, scheduled for tomorrow at 16 p.m. at the Engenhão Stadium, is far from over. Yesterday, a meeting was held with representatives of the clubs involved, as well as Botafogo, the stadium's administrator, as well as the president of the Brazilian Football Federation (FERJ), Rubens Lopes, and Major João Busnello, commander of the GEPE (National Football Association), to try to resolve the impasse.
Ferj (Federal Football Federation) paid for the match and promised to take out insurance today to cover damages. The Federation president is basing his decision on the State Championship regulations, which stipulate that the organization is the home team in matches between small and large clubs. "I don't believe Botafogo will lock the stadium. If that happens, that's what will spark fan outrage, as tickets for the match have already been sold. Botafogo will suffer financial losses in TV contracts, in addition to tearing up the regulations," Rubinho emphasized.
Yesterday, representatives of Flamengo's organized fan groups met in Gávea and promised not to vandalize the Engenhão.

The president of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), Rubens Approbato Machado, denied the request for a suspension of midfielder Gavilán. Signed at the end of last year, the Paraguayan is still serving a suspension from his time playing for Grêmio. "A journalist's blog published that Flamengo received a R$26 million offer. There's no such offer. We're quick to respond to this because it hinders negotiations, making it seem like someone has already signed a deal, which isn't true," complained the Flamengo executive.
Until the end of 2007, Flamengo received around R$14 million annually from Petrobras, but intends to increase this amount to R$21 million.
Flamengo may also change its sports equipment supplier in the coming days. Olympikos and Reebok have already submitted offers to replace Nike and outfit the Rio de Janeiro club. The club, which receives R$9 million per year from Nike, could earn R$12 million with a new supplier.

After much hearsay, the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation (Ferj) confirmed, this Thursday, that the match between Flamengo x América will be held at Engenhão, Saturday, at 16 pm (Brasília time), for the fifth round of Group A of the Guanabara Cup, first round of the State Championship.
The meeting at the entity's headquarters, which lasted about four hours, was attended by Botafogo's vice-legal officer, Aníbal Rouxinol, Flamengo's lawyer, Michel Assef, Ferj's president, Rubens Lopes, as well as América's representative Jorge Fernandes and the commander of Gepe (Special Stadium Policing Group), Major João Busnello.
The imbroglio began when Botafogo, which leased the Engenhão stadium for the next 20 years, demanded guarantees that nothing would be broken at the stadium. Furthermore, the club's board also wanted to receive rent.
However, on Thursday morning, in an official statement signed by president Márcio Braga, Flamengo admitted that it was in no position to be responsible for organizing the event.
"Botafogo's concern was pertinent and we spent hours discussing to resolve the problem. The club reduced the amounts it was initially asking for," said Ferj president Rubens Lopes, who added.
"The Federation is providing measures, such as an ambulance and a medical center. The only issue remaining is security, as Botafogo requires a document from the clubs and the organization assuming responsibility for any damage," he added in an interview with Rádio Tupi.
The match between Flamengo and América was previously scheduled for Maracanã on Carnival Sunday at 18:10 p.m. (Brasília time). Claiming they were unable to provide security for the game and the samba school parade, the Military Police requested a change of date and location.
As Botafogo and Vasco face each other on Saturday, at 18:10 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation was forced to schedule the match for Engenhão.
Petrobras sends statement about contract renewal with Flamengo

Flamengo will analyze next week whether the strained relationship with its sponsor will be enough to end a 24-year relationship. The board of directors is planning a meeting after Carnival to resolve the issue.
Therefore, the official statement issued by Petrobras on Thursday will remain unanswered. Executive Marketing Director Ricardo Heinrichsen read the statement that evening but preferred to await further developments.
"For now, Flamengo will not comment. We will do so next week, after the meeting," he said over the phone.

Flamengo expects to receive approximately R$21 million per year to advertise the state-owned company's brand. However, the counteroffer doesn't exceed R$16 million. The large difference and the public exposure of the negotiation further strained the process.
Without a contract, the Rubro-Negro is providing free advertising for Petrobras by printing the brand on its uniform. However, for now, the possibility of cleaning the jersey will not be implemented.

The president of the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation (FERJ), Rubens Lopes, announced early Thursday evening that the match between Flamengo and América will be held at Engenhão on Carnival Saturday. However, the ticket capacity will be 19.900, despite the stadium being able to hold up to 45 people.
"The game is confirmed. It will be Saturday at 16 p.m., with no preliminary matches. There is no date or stadium for this game to be moved. Some situations had to be worked around. Flamengo and América argue that they didn't choose the Engenhão stadium to play. But this is due to regulations and to ensure the championship continues," he said in an interview with Rádio Tupi.
On Wednesday, Botafogo's board announced that it had sent a letter to the Federation to clarify responsibilities for the match. The club was awaiting signatures from the Federation, Flamengo, and América. Rubens Lopes understands the stadium owner's demands. He says measures are being taken.
"Botafogo's concern for its assets is pertinent, and we spent a few hours thinking about how we could address that concern. The Federation is taking all necessary steps to ensure this match is held. The only thing left is security. Botafogo is requesting a document with everyone's signatures accepting responsibility for any damage to the stadium, but Flamengo and América disagree. We will take out insurance to resolve this issue. But I can guarantee that Flamengo and América will be responsible for any potential damage," he states.
Through its press office, Ferj (State of Rio Grande do Norte State) announced that Botafogo will receive a portion of the insurance premium in advance. Contacted by GLOBOESPORTE.COM, Botafogo president Bebeto de Freitas said he was no longer at the club's headquarters and could not say whether the club had received any documents from Ferj regarding the fifth-round match of the Taça Guanabara.

Flamengo agrees with Rubens Lopes on some points. The club accepts and demands to face América this Saturday at Engenhão Stadium. However, when the subject turns to potential liability for damages, the thinking is radical.
The club's representative, Michel Assef, maintained his position of not signing any liability agreement for any potential damage to Botafogo's stadium. The club understands that by moving the game from Maracanã, Ferj also assumes all risks.
"The game was supposed to be at Maracanã. At the request of the Military Police and the Federation, we had to change the venue. We don't have to take responsibility for anything. We've already asked our fans to remain calm. We won't do anything more than that. Flamengo refuses to take responsibility or provide guarantees to anyone for any potential problems," the director stated.

Just like in 2007, Flamengo will be the only Brazilian club at the U-19 World Cup in Malaysia in August. Youth coordinator Rivelino Serpa confirmed the club's participation in the tournament.
"We've been invited again. The competition will take place in the first half of August," he says.
The Red-Blacks performed well in the previous edition of the championship, finishing third. Their executioner was Manchester United in the semifinals. There will be 16 teams, 13 of which have already been chosen. The remaining spots will be allocated to the Asian continent.

Thiago Sales was calmly watching Flamengo's training session on Thursday afternoon when doctor Walter Martins called him to the sidelines. The Rubro-Negro team vaccinated some players—Maxi and Rômulo, for example—and members of the coaching staff for their Copa Libertadores debut against Coronel Bolognesi in Tacna. This precaution is mandatory for all citizens traveling to Peru.
Many athletes who competed in the 2007 competition did not need to receive the injection. Last year, Flamengo traveled to Bolivia, another high-risk area.

Cienciano secured a narrow victory at 3.360m altitude in Cusco, beating a weak Montevideo Wanderers 1-0 this Thursday in the first leg of the Libertadores Cup. Cienciano starts off engaging, but loses pace

The complicated contract renewal between Flamengo and Petrobras gained another chapter this Thursday. The state-owned company issued a statement detailing the entire renegotiation process of the agreement, which has been in effect for 24 years.
According to the company, the club initially asked for R$15,7 million per year to continue displaying the brand. However, on January 16, the club increased its request to R$23,5 million, and Petrobras refuses to pay more than R$16,2 million per year. Throughout the statement, the company states its "surprise" by the change in the negotiations.
Last Wednesday, Flamengo's executive marketing director, Ricardo Heinrichsen, told GLOBOESPORTE.COM that the club was considering operating without sponsorship if the situation wasn't resolved. There are fears that the club engaged in "unnecessary advertising" in January. According to Petrobras' statement, if the contract isn't renewed, everything suggests it will be.
"Finally, we inform you that, as already formalized and known to the club, the exposure of a company's brand, without support in a contractual instrument, is the sole and exclusive responsibility of whoever exposes it."

Riding the wave of Fla TV, Flamengo launches Fla Filmes and announces the release of two documentaries with exclusive images of the club's last two titles for the beginning of February: the 2006 Copa do Brasil and the 2007 State Championship. The decision was confirmed after a meeting that lasted about four hours, which was attended by, in addition to Rubens Lopes, the president of the board of directors of Flamengo, Michel Asseff, the director of revenue of Flamengo, Flávio Pereira, the football manager of América, Jorge Fernandes, and the head of the Special Policing Group in Stadiums (Gepe), Major João Busnello.

"No one can assume that Flamengo or América fans are criminals. Flamengo has already played at São Januário, Vasco's home ground, and the fans behaved with chivalry. The commander of the Special Stadium Policing Group (Gepe), Major João Busnello, appeared calm about the threats made by Flamengo fans to demolish the Engenhão stadium, made on the social networking site Orkut.
"We'll draw up a plan of action with the fans. I believe everything will go smoothly, with complete tranquility," the major believes.
The commander explained that GEPE will have 200 police officers inside the stadium, in addition to officers from the 3rd Military Police Battalion (Méier). The Municipal Guard will also assist with security. Flamengo fans will be escorted to the stadium.
