Flamengo and Botafogo adopt diplomacy and begin to avoid new controversies

Flamengo and Botafogo celebrated their first day of truce yesterday following the series of controversies that began during the Guanabara Cup final. At both clubs, the tone of the discussions was much more moderate. At Flamengo, the players were ordered by the board to drop the matter.
After training, coach Joel Santana went straight to the interview area and, before answering any questions, asked for the floor:
"We're done talking about Botafogo. I don't want that. And the players already know that. Let's stop creating controversy. We're only talking about football," warned Joel, worried about violent reactions from both sets of fans.
"It's good to put an end to this. We can't continue this and risk creating conflict," added defender Fábio Luciano.
Only three starters against Resende
Souza, Joel, and Fábio Luciano had been advised to avoid the topic by Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite. Leite proposed something similar to Flamengo's director, Carlos Augusto Montenegro.
Botafogo midfielder Túlio, who publicly clashed with Souza, also changed his tone.
"Rivalry doesn't need to be fueled by arguments. When I saw my picture in the newspaper, in an argument with another player, I felt bad. I'm not going to argue with anyone anymore," he said.
Montenegro was conciliatory:
"I'm not asking for peace because there was no war. There was a beautiful game and a legitimate champion, Flamengo. My players won't provoke anyone. Our crying was the reaction of those who haven't had any luck with the referees."
On the field, coach Joel Santana decided to field a significantly modified team tomorrow against Resende. Of the starters who faced Cienciano, only Bruno, Kléberson, and Diego Tardelli will play.
The club announced the payment of the remaining portion of the December salary and the bonus for the victory over Vasco in the Guanabara Cup semifinal. The prize for the title and the month of January are still missing.
The Romário issue has resurfaced. According to Kléber Leite, the case will move forward after the return of president Márcio Braga, who is in Europe and will return next week. Romário would play his farewell match for the club and would be featured in Flamengo's communications, including FlaTV. The possibility of bringing Barcelona to Rio, with the help of Nike, for the match is being studied. WITH A pantomime that simulated crying, Flamengo striker Souza doubly transgressed this rule: he lacked professional ethics by disrespecting Botafogo, and a sense of responsibility by contributing to increasing the octane of the war climate that has mobilized the fans of both teams since Sunday.
IT'S A GOOD THING that the directors of both clubs are waving peace to each other, in a gesture that will reach the stands as an example to follow.

It's a delicate subject. It sparks discussion even here in the newsroom. It's been a long time since a decision has been as prominent in the media as last Sunday's Flamengo vs. Botafogo match. The repercussions have become entwined with the intolerance that exists in the most popular sport. We live in an era where everything is offensive, everything is offensive. On the field and in its surroundings, football has become pasteurized.
In the Flamengo-Fluminense match in the final round of the first half, when Fluminense's Anderson lifted the ball and kicked it forward seconds before the final whistle, Flamengo's Obina started a fight, demanding respect for his Flamengo jersey. He messed things up!
But, against Cienciano, when Souza mocked Botafogo, imitating someone crying, the red-blacks went wild, while the black-and-whites were outraged.
What was excessive about these two episodes?
Strictly speaking, nothing.
It would be offensive if Souza had spit on the opposing team's jersey. Or if Anderson had given the opposing team a finger.
Football is so lacking in ideas that when something deviates from the trivial, it's as if it's breaking the guidelines of the advisors and the sponsors' backdrops. Everything is uncomfortable. Everyone is always on the defensive, entrenched, afraid of the coaches, the bosses, and anything that might threaten the "rules."
It's a shame that players, courts, players and even us journalists have infinitely less capacity to be outraged by an unfair and criminal tackle - like the one that will prevent Eduardo da Silva from playing for at least nine months.
Those players who knew how to promote classics are missed. They've given way to this pasteurized football. It's not hard to understand why.

A top scorer wherever he went, Souza never managed to escape controversy throughout his career.
Controversial, irreverent, but above all, passionate about Flamengo. That's how striker Souza's story can be summed up. After a turbulent week, in which he was sent off in the Guanabara Cup final against Botafogo and then mocked the black and whites' tears while celebrating the first goal of the victory over Cienciano, he clashed with defensive midfielder Túlio. Despite being heavily criticized, he also has virtues.
Souza was born and raised at Madureira, and after winning the U-17 World Cup with the Brazilian national team in 1999, he was signed by Vasco, where he won the Rio de Janeiro state championship in 2003, even scoring a goal in the final against Fluminense. Despite this, his passion for Flamengo was always evident and marked his time at São Januário.
After a discreet stint with Marítimo (Portugal), Souza was signed by Internacional. Coach Paulo Chupeta will ask his players to be very serious for tomorrow's match against Iguaçu, in the Men's National Championship.
Leading the National Championship with 10 wins in 10 games and qualified for the second phase of the South American Basketball League, Flamengo returns to play in the National Championship tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Nova Iguaçu at the Hélio Maurício gymnasium in Gávea. Coach Paulo Chupeta is resolute about resting his starters and will go into the tournament with full strength to try to win another victory.
"We're going with everyone, despite the exhaustion of the trip. We spent six hours at the airport, so I took a day and a half off. But Flamengo will be at full strength for the game. Romário almost certain to join Flamengo

Rio - The order at Gávea was to keep the success of the negotiations with Romário secret. Earlier this week, vice president of football Kléber Leite finally agreed with Baixinho to return to Flamengo, where he had spent two stints in 1995/96 and 1997/99. But the director insists on keeping everything under wraps out of respect for Vasco, which has Baixinho under contract until March 30th.
The top scorer's official presentation is scheduled for April 4th. But Kléber Leite doesn't want to announce anything without the presence of President Márcio Braga, who is in Europe.
