Defense errors bring down Fla against Palmeiras
A 2-1 defeat interrupts the winning streak and the red-black team remains in the relegation zone, in 18th place.
Photo caption: CAIO CELEBRATES his goal, the first of Palmeiras' 2-1 victory, in front of a desolate Cristian (11)
SÃO PAULO. Edmundo failed to fulfill his goal-scoring ritual against Flamengo, but the Animal's lack of goals yesterday didn't help the red-and-blacks breathe a sigh of relief. Nor did it improve their position in the Brazilian Championship. With the same childish mistakes that brought down Ney Franco, Joel Santana's Flamengo played a mediocre game and left Parque Antártica with a 2-1 defeat that kept them in the relegation zone, with 18 points, in 18th place.
Palmeiras, who played well enough to delight their fans and put an end to the story that the team can't win at home, got their fourth win at their stadium in this Brasileirão, rising to 33 points. The defeat interrupted the winning streak that Flamengo had maintained: Náutico (2-1) and Fluminense (1-0).
Against Juventude, a new red-black team
Trying to inspire their players, the fans distributed giant, well-crafted drawings of some of their star players, who made the "Academia" famous. Accurate paintings of idols like Djalma Santos, Leão, Ademir da Guia, Leivinha, Dudu, and others adorned the dreams of Palmeiras fans.
But, evidently, Caio Júnior's current team is light years away from the Palmeiras of old. Instead of a team that played to the beat of the drum, the current one places its hopes on the skill and vision of 36-year-old veteran Edmundo and the dynamic Martinez. And it was without forcing the pace too much that Palmeiras discovered the real deal: the right side of the red-and-black defense.
In the 13th minute, Luiz Henrique slotted past Rômulo and crossed perfectly for Caio to make it 1-0. Two minutes later, also on the wing, Flamengo equalized with a good play by Ibson, who found Maxi on a through ball. The Argentine sent the ball perfectly for Paulo Sérgio to finish. With the equalizer, the Rio de Janeiro team felt encouraged, but lacked the strength to impose themselves. They had another chance in the 23rd minute, a well-saved shot by Diego Cavalieri, but nothing more.
In the second half, Palmeiras secured victory with a move almost identical to the first goal. In the seventh minute, Luizinho lost the ball near the box to Dininho, who cut in from the left and crossed for defender Gustavo to finish with his knee to make it 2-1.
With their ability to react limited to the runs of Ibson, who played virtually alone in the midfield because Léo Lima was a non-starter, Flamengo struggled with their lack of attacking options. They only threatened Palmeiras' goal in the 12th minute, with a free kick taken by Egídio, which Cavalieri saved with some difficulty.
After the goal, the São Paulo team hit the brakes. Edmundo wasn't as productive, but when he did attack Palmeiras, he created dangerous situations. In one instance, Martinez shot from outside the box, and Bruno palmed it over the crossbar. Dominated and powerless to react, Flamengo replaced Léo Lima with Obina and Paulo Sérgio with Toró. Nothing changed the course of events. In the 30th minute, Ibson attempted a beautiful long-range shot, but an opponent's head deflected the ball away from what appeared to be the goal.
After the game, Joel Santana was objective in his analysis of the game, without wanting to talk about justice or injustice.
"This whole thing about justice in results is very relative. What remains is that we lose, and we lose because of our own mistakes, because of mistakes we can't make," said Joel.
Today, after a presentation at Gávea and training for those who didn't play, the permanent training regime resumes. The team heads to Teresópolis to begin preparations for Thursday's match at Maracanã against Juventude, which may hire coach Ney Franco, formerly of Flamengo. Joel will be able to count on Leonardo Moura, Juan, Roger, Renato Augusto, and Souza, who are expected to return.
Yellow cards: Pierre, Egidio, Fabio Luciano, Paulo Sergio, Edmundo, Rodrigão.

It's not much, is it?
The testimony given here in the column that Joel Santana had a clean career, until that moment in the game against Santos when he ordered the Flamengo players to beat the opponent, was not aimed at his acquittal by the STJD, which was nothing more than a serious condescension.
You only need to have followed Joel's series of titles right here, in Rio football, to know that his teams were never violent nor instructed to rotate fouls, as many Brazilian coaches' teams have been for some years now, without much complaint about it.
What would be equally unfair would be for Joel to receive the maximum two-year suspension—as if he were paying for all the violence incited by all the coaches, all this time. After all, the worst things coaches do don't happen on the sidelines, in full view of everyone and the TV cameras.
If they behave like this on the open field, just imagine what they say and order their players behind closed doors. Yes, my dear colleagues, exercise your imagination, if it's not too much to ask.
But the pure and simple acquittal of Joel Santana, as well as the generosity of the suspension of Souza, from Flamengo, for only five games, after assaulting opponents twice in a row, and just like the also pure and simple acquittal of Dodô, in the first doping case without a culprit in world football - all of this sets a dangerous precedent, as if the sports justice system authorized the release of all of this above: the coach ordering attacks on opponents, the player assaulting rivals even when they are down, and the professionals doping at will.\ But isn't all of this a beautiful example offered by the sports justice system?\
In yet another defeat, this time to Palmeiras, Flamengo had two players on the field, just two, nothing more than that: Íbson and Maxi.

Fla falters and loses to Palmeiras: 2-1
Pedro Sá pedrosa@jsports.com.br
Maxi Biancucchi is pressured by two Palmeiras fans. The Argentine was unable to prevent the red-and-black defeat.
In a highly competitive match, Palmeiras defeated Flamengo 2-1 this Sunday at Parque Antártica. Caio and defender Gustavo scored for the São Paulo team, with Paulo Sérgio pulling one back for the red-and-blacks. With the victory, Palmeiras now has 33 points and could finish the round in 5th place. Flamengo remains in the relegation zone with 18 points.
The first half started at a leisurely pace, with neither team creating many chances on goal, except for a shot from midfielder Martinez that went wide of Bruno's goal. However, the game picked up pace in the 13th minute. Forward Luiz Henrique sprinted past Luizinho and crossed for Caio to tap in. Palmeiras 1-0. Unlike in recent games, Flamengo didn't feel the impact of the goal and equalized two minutes later with Paulo Sérgio, following a fine play from Argentine Maxi.
After the red-and-black goal, the field witnessed a series of missed goals from both teams. Flamengo had a chance with a shot from Paulo Sérgio, which Diego Cavalieri saved. Caio Júnior's team relied on Luiz Henrique's speed and Martinez's precise passing to threaten the red-and-black goal. Before the end of the first half, Edmundo forced goalkeeper Bruno to make a good save on a shot from outside the box. It was the end of a strong first half, in which both teams maintained a strong rhythm after Palmeiras' goal.
The second half had barely begun when, just seven minutes in, a miscued clearance by full-back Luizinho resulted in defender Dininho crossing for Gustavo to finish and put the São Paulo team back in front. After Palmeiras scored, coach Joel Santana decided to take a risk and took off Léo Lima to bring on Obina.
Flamengo threatened with free kicks from midfielder Cristian, while Palmeiras threatened with a powerful Martinez shot that Bruno palmed out for a corner. Flamengo's best chance came from Obina's shot, the ball rebounded off the Palmeiras defense, and Ibson fired in the rebound, narrowly missing Diego Cavalieri's goal. Despite the effort and hustle of their players, Flamengo couldn't secure the draw, which, under the circumstances, would have been considered a good result.
Joel regrets the team's failures
Yesterday's loss to Palmeiras was definitely not in coach Joel Santana's plans. He repeatedly reiterated last week that Flamengo would have to exploit their opponent's inconsistency when playing at home. The coach felt that a lack of precision was the deciding factor in the result.
"To say there was justice in the game is complicated; it doesn't mean anything in the end. The team played well, played a balanced match, but made two mistakes and ended up losing. Palmeiras capitalized on their opportunities and came away with the victory," analyzed Joel. For next Thursday's game at Maracanã against Juventude, the coach is expected to gain some important reinforcements. Full-backs Leonardo Moura and Juan, as well as midfielder Roger, are back from suspension and will be available for the club's manager. Also returning is forward Souza, who served a five-match suspension imposed by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) and is cleared to play. The only remaining doubt is midfielder Renato Augusto, who is in the final stages of recovering from a left thigh injury.
Kids finish third in the World Cup
Flamengo's youth team bowed out with honors at the U-19 Club World Cup, currently being held in Malaysia. The team defeated Milan 3-1 to secure third place in the championship. Vander, Wellinton, and Kayke scored for the Red-Blacks, with Pierre Aubemayung pulling one back for the Italians. Flamengo ends the competition with four wins, one draw, and only one loss.
Fabio Luciano regrets Fla's mistakes
Flamengo's two-game winning streak in the Brazilian Championship ended this Sunday. The team traveled to São Paulo and lost 2-1 to Palmeiras. Flamengo's biggest problem, according to defender Fábio Luciano, was Luizinho's mistake, which lost the ball to Dininho. The defender crossed for Gustavo to score the Verdão's second goal.
"The first goal was Luiz Henrique's merit. The second was our mistake. Now we have to focus on Thursday's game. We have to work hard and consider each match individually. A big team like Flamengo can't afford to make silly mistakes. But this is a learning experience," the player commented.
The Rubro-negra team's next challenge will be this Thursday, against Juventude, at Maracanã, in a postponed game from the eighth round.

Flamengo loses to Palmeiras and remains in the relegation zone
SÃO PAULO - The party's over. Away from their home crowd, a depleted Flamengo team failed to replicate their performance in the Fla-Flu match, losing 2-1 to Palmeiras at Parque Antártica. A result that leaves them still far from escaping the relegation zone in the Brazilian Championship, currently in 18th place.
The only reason the defeat wasn't more painful was that none of their relegation-threatened teammates managed to win in the round. Also in the black hole, Náutico and América-RN lost, and Juventude only managed a draw.
Without Léo Moura, Juan, Roger, Renato Augusto, and Souza, Flamengo made mistakes that helped Palmeiras, also shorthanded, win at home. In the 13th minute, Luiz Henrique, from the left, crossed into the box for Caio, replacing Chilean Valdívia, to score the 1-0 goal.
But there was no time to celebrate. Two minutes later, it was Argentinian Maxi Biancucchi's turn to confirm his place in the starting lineup: he made a fine run down the right and crossed perfectly for Paulo Sérgio to equalize at 1-1.
Flamengo managed to match Palmeiras in the first half. Continuing his enthusiasm and boldness, Paulo Sérgio took advantage of a mistake by Dininho to advance dangerously in the 23rd minute. But instead of passing to Luisinho, who was well-positioned, the forward risked the play and missed a good opportunity to score the winning goal.
Palmeiras continued to attack down the left flank, ignoring Luisinho, who, in Léo Moura's place, was unable to deliver.
The Rubro-Negro would pay dearly for their biggest mistake, seven minutes into the second half. Leandro easily stole the ball from Luisinho and passed it to Dininho, who crossed into the box. Gustavo capitalized, scoring the winning goal for the São Paulo team: 7-2.
A free kick from Egídio in the 12th minute would have been Flamengo's best chance of the second half, but Diego Cavalieri saved. Coach Joel Santana still tried to give the attack some breathing room, sending on Obina in place of Léo Lima. It was to no avail, as the ball wouldn't reach them.
With Palmeiras shut down, it was difficult to advance. Flamengo struggled and struggled, but left the field defeated.
Flamengo: Players suspended
Permanent concentration regime will continue for a long time at Flamengo
Rio - The punishment isn't over. And it wouldn't have ended even if Flamengo had defeated Palmeiras yesterday. Even before taking the field, the players knew the permanent training camp would remain in effect.
Today, the team will be training in Gávea and will travel to Teresópolis, where they will train until Wednesday. On Thursday, Flamengo will face Juventude at Maracanã. And on Friday, they will return to their training camp at Granja Comary to prepare for Sunday's match against Goiás at Maracanã.
Flamengo's next five games will be in Rio: Juventude, Goiás, Botafogo, Sport, and Figueirense. This means Flamengo will once again have the support of its fans, so crucial in the 1-0 victory in the Fla-Flu match.
Defender Fábio Luciano complained yesterday about Flamengo's mistakes. Luisinho's mistake, which led to Palmeiras' winning goal, left the defender upset. "The second goal was our mistake. A big team like Flamengo can't afford to make silly mistakes. But this is a learning experience," the defender said.
SHORTAGES RETURN
Of Flamengo's absentees yesterday, Renato Augusto, recovering from a strain, is still doubtful for Thursday night's game. Léo Moura, Juan, and Roger served suspensions and will be back. Another player who could return to the team is Souza, who served his fifth-game suspension for assaulting Grêmio's Tcheco.

Flamengo fans embarrass themselves at Palestra\ Paulo Amaral\
São Paulo (SP) - Despite giving Palestra Itália a very special color, filling the reserved section and mixing red and black with the green and white crowd, Flamengo fans set a bad example this Sunday at the Palmeiras stadium.\ Members of two organized factions of the red-black team clashed over the banners and caused panic among the 'ordinary' fans, who went to Palestra just to have fun.\
At the end of the altercation, which ended thanks to the intervention of the Military Police, the leaders of Torcida Jovem and Raça Fla were arrested. Minutes later, one of the unidentified "discord banners" was burned in the stands.
Flamengo loses at Palestra and remains under threat\ Paulo Amaral\
São Paulo (SP) - Ghost? Only on Flamengo's side. This Sunday, at Palestra Itália, Palmeiras hosted the Rio de Janeiro club, eager to end a two-game winless streak in front of their home fans and, in this way, begin their definitive push towards the top of the Brasileirão table.\ With goals from Caio and Gustavo (Paulo Sérgio scored for the Rio de Janeiro team), Verdão surpassed their rivals, reaching 33 points, in fourth place, and leaving Flamengo even more threatened by relegation, with only 18 points, in third-to-last place.\
To remain in the top four at the end of the 4th round, Palmeiras will have to hope for a loss against Cruzeiro, who host Fluminense this Sunday at Mineirão Stadium. Raposa has 20 points and could overtake Palmeiras' top spot with a positive result.
Besides the goals, Palmeiras and Flamengo had other opportunities to bring smiles to their fans' faces in the first half. For the visitors, midfielder Ibson and Argentine Maxi, Messi's cousin and the star of his country's national team, stood out. The duo managed to combine well on the left side of the Palmeiras defense and threatened Diego Cavalieri's goal on two occasions.
Young Paulo Sérgio, who scored the red-black goal, also had the chance to lead the Rio team to a comeback in the first half, after a mistake by Dininho, but was stopped by a good save from Diego Cavalieri after a shot that was crossed and placed.
Luiz Henrique was the man of the match for Palmeiras. Besides the play that led to Caio's goal, the number 28 made the Rio defense sweat with strong runs from both the right and left sides of the attack. The best chance to score the second goal in the first half, however, fell to midfielder Pierre. The new fan favorite took a shot from distance in the 36th minute. The ball bounced off the "artillery hill" and nearly fooled Bruno, who made a fine save.
In the second half, the action continued intensely, and Palmeiras took the lead after just seven minutes. After Caio's corner kick, the Rio defense cleared the ball, and Leandro recovered a loose ball on the left, passing it to Dininho. As a winger, the defender delivered a perfect cross for his defensive partner, Gustavo, to deflect past Bruno and put Palmeiras back in front.
As in the first half, Rio's response was almost immediate. A beautiful free kick from full-back Egidio gave Flamengo a chance to equalize, but Diego Cavalieri, the new "santo" for the green and white team, made a fine save to prevent another draw at Palestra.
Before the 15th minute, coach Joel Santana decided to make the red-and-black team more attacking, taking off Léo Lima and bringing on striker Obina. Caio Júnior responded ten minutes later, replacing the tired Caio with the speedy William. Moments earlier, he saw Martinez take a shot from distance and almost catch Bruno out, who managed to send it out for a corner.
The game became even more open, and Ibson, with a long-range shot that deflected off the Palmeiras defense, nearly equalized again in the 30th minute. Palmeiras responded with a long-range shot from Paulo Sérgio, which went just wide of Bruno's post.
Caio Júnior made two more changes to the team, swapping forwards Luiz Henrique and Edmundo for Max and Rodrigão, but Palestra Itália's score remained 2-1, enough to temporarily place Verdão among the top four in the Brasileirão, with 33 points.
In the next round, Palmeiras will travel to Santa Catarina to face Figueirense on Sunday at Orlando Scarpelli Stadium at 16 p.m. Also on Sunday, but a little later, at 18:10 p.m., Flamengo will face another green and white team, Goiás, at Maracanã. Before that, they'll face Juventude on Thursday in a postponed match from the eighth round.

Fábio Luciano regrets defense's mistake
Flamengo defender admits defensive system failure in Palmeiras' second goal
Defender Fábio Luciano lamented the error made by Flamengo's defense that resulted in Palmeiras' second goal in their 2-1 loss this Sunday in São Paulo. Right-back Luizinho lost the ball to Diguinho, who crossed for Gustavo to score.
"The first goal was Luiz Henrique's merit. The second was our mistake. Now we have to focus on Thursday's game. We have to work hard and consider each match individually. A big team like Flamengo can't afford to make silly mistakes. But this is a learning experience," says the defender.
Flamengo will face Juventude this Thursday at Maracanã Stadium in a postponed match from the eighth round. With Sunday's defeat, the Rio de Janeiro team will remain in the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship.

MARCOS PAULO CAMPOS
With goals from Caio and Gustavo, Palmeiras defeated Flamengo 2-1 this Sunday at Parque Antártica, ending the Rio de Janeiro team's home losing streak and its winning streak in the Brazilian Championship. With this result, the São Paulo team remains in contention for a spot in next year's Copa Libertadores.
Palmeiras had suffered two negative results at home: a 2-1 loss to Sport and a 1-1 draw with Internacional. Despite the victory, the results of the round kept Verdão in fifth place.
Meanwhile, Mengão, which hadn't lost in two rounds (wins over Náutico and Fluminense), continues its ordeal in the relegation zone. The Rio de Janeiro team, with three games in hand, sits in 18th place with 18 points, five behind Atlético Paranaense, who is in 16th.
The first half started evenly. Palmeiras had more possession, but Flamengo was attacking on the counterattack. However, there were no real dangers until the 13th minute, when Luiz Henrique made a run down the left and crossed. Caio got ahead of Ronaldo Angelim and tapped the ball into the net.
However, Palmeiras barely had time to celebrate their lead. Two minutes later, Argentine Maxi made a solo run down the right and crossed for Paulo Sérgio, who only had to tap it into the net to equalize.
From then on, the home side began to press harder. Edmundo was the maestro for the São Paulo team, setting up almost every play. However, Flamengo's well-positioned defense kept the danger at bay. The best chance came only in the 36th minute, when Pierre fired a shot from the right edge of the box. The ball bounced and almost fooled Bruno, but the goalkeeper managed to palm it away for a corner.
The first minutes of the second half showed an even game until, in the seventh minute, Flamengo's right-back Luizinho made a mistake when clearing the ball and lost it to Dininho, who crossed for Gustavo to score for Palmeiras.
With the score trailing, Flamengo even tried to press. Left-back Egídio took a free kick, but Diego Cavalieri made a great save. Coach Joel Santana also took off midfielder Léo Lima, who had played no part in the match, and brought on Obina.
However, after the substitution, the Rio de Janeiro team was weakened in midfield, lacking a playmaker, and the more organized Palmeiras began to dominate the action. Edmundo continued to be the main playmaker for the Alviverde team.
Gradually, Flamengo found its feet and once again leveled the playing field. The Rio de Janeiro team began to move the ball better and began to threaten Diego Cavalieri. Midfielder Ibson nearly scored after a shot that deflected off Gustavo. The Palmeiras goalkeeper stood still and watched the ball go wide of the goal.
Palmeiras returns to action next Sunday against Figueirense, away from home. Flamengo hosts Juventude on Thursday at Maracanã in a postponed match from the eighth round.
Joel Santana: 'We have to know how to play ugly'
For Flamengo coach, team could have avoided second goal
Coach Joel Santana was deeply angered by the error made by Flamengo's defense that resulted in Palmeiras' second goal in their 2-1 loss at Parque Antarctica this Sunday in the Brazilian Championship. In the play, right-back Luizinho lost the ball to Dininho, who set up Gustavo to score.
"You can't try to protect the ball with your back to the goal, playing on the opponent's field, in a packed stadium. That play decided the game. You should have cleared the ball with a long kick forward," Joel said.
The coach didn't say Luizinho's name and stated that, in football, everyone makes mistakes.
"I'm not going to point out individual flaws. When you win, everyone wins. When you lose, everyone loses too. I'm only saying this because we have to know how to play on the opposing side," he commented.
Joel Santana also said that the team also needs to learn to play ugly.
"Flamengo didn't play as planned. The club's traditions dictate that we play beautifully, but we also have to know when to play ugly," he concluded.
Ibson complains about Fla's defensive failures
Error in ball exit resulted in Palmeiras' second goal
Midfielder Ibson complained about defensive lapses in the 2-1 loss to Palmeiras this Sunday at Parque Antarctica. The São Paulo team's second goal came after a mistake by right-back Luizinho when clearing the ball.
"Beating Palmeiras here at Parque Antarctica is tough. We scored once, but conceded two more through silly mistakes. It's tough then," he lamented.
The defeat ended Flamengo's two-game winning streak in the Brazilian Championship. The Rio de Janeiro team takes the field this Thursday to face Juventude at Maracanã Stadium in a postponed match from the eighth round.
Kléber Leite: 'Fla will not be relegated under any circumstances'
For the club's vice president of football, Flamengo's squad is strong
For Kleber, being in the relegation zone is bad psychologically (Credit: Gilvan de Souza)
After the 2-1 defeat to Palmeiras this Sunday at Parque Antarctica, Flamengo's vice-president of football Kléber Leite stated that the team will not be relegated to Série B in 2008.
"Flamengo won't be relegated under any circumstances. I'm sure of it. The group is strong. Half the team was out for this game against Palmeiras. Léo Moura, Juan, Roger, Renato Augusto, Souza... When everyone is fit, the team will improve a lot," he said.
Kléber commented on Flamengo's performance against Palmeiras and stated that the worst thing, at the moment, is seeing the team in the relegation zone.
"Flamengo didn't do badly, they played well, but now it's time to lift their heads. The downside is the psychological aspect of looking at the table and seeing the team in the relegation zone," he concluded.
Flamengo will face Juventude this Thursday at Maracanã in a postponed match from the eighth round. With a win, the Rio de Janeiro team will overtake Náutico and move just two points behind Atlético-PR, the first team above the relegation zone.
Rubro-negros approve the departure of defenders
Flamengo released players Moisés, Irineu and Thiago
In addition to the derby between Flamengo and Fluminense, the week at the Rubro-Negro was marked by the release of defenders Moisés, Irineu, and Thiago. The trio ended up at Gávea after being recommended by former coach Ney Franco.
The players' contract termination was approved by fans. In a LANCENET! poll, 80,59% of internet users voted in favor of the Gávea club's decision. 19,41% voted against it.
