According to the original table, Fla would not suffer
Without the Pan American Games postponements, the red-black team could have had its most peaceful Brazilian Championship in recent years.

Flamengo spent 15 rounds in the relegation zone, making the Brazilian Championship a nightmare for them. But things could have been different if they had played the competition with their original schedule. Flamengo had to postpone four games (Vasco, Juventude, Fluminense, and Cruzeiro) and reverse home-field performances against São Paulo due to the Pan American Games. Flamengo won all the rescheduled games. Had the games been played on their original dates, the team would have spent 80% of the Brazilian Championship in the top half of the table. They would have spent one round in the Libertadores and only one in the relegation zone.
In addition to having up to four games fewer than their opponents, Flamengo had to play 11 of their first 14 matches away from Rio. The postponements gave the club time to strengthen their squad, but created intense pressure. The team dropped to second-to-last place and had to play 13 games in 40 days.
"We won all the postponed games under a lot of pressure. We played every three days, breaking several players. I was even without a striker. We only got through it thanks to the fans," says coach Joel Santana.

In the sixth round, still without postponements, Flamengo entered the relegation zone after a draw with Internacional, which dropped them to 17th place. In the 10th round, Flamengo was scheduled to host São Paulo. The CBF reversed the home team and played the second leg at Morumbi Stadium (0-0). On October 4th, the postponed match was played at Maracanã Stadium, and Flamengo won 1-0. Had the matches been played on their original dates, the results would have placed the team in 7th place at the end of the 10th round. At the time, they were 18th.
The 11th round was scheduled for a Fla-Flu match, which was only played 35 days later with a 1-0 victory for Flamengo. Flamengo confirmed this Friday, in a press conference held in Gávea, that it is a candidate to take control of the Maracanã stadium.
The decision was announced to the press by club president Márcio Braga. The bidding notice is expected to be released by the end of this month, and the club's main competitor will be the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation).
The club's director stated that he already has an alternative plan in place in case he fails to win the bid. In this case, the club will propose a partnership with Botafogo to share the management of the Engenhão stadium.
According to Braga, although Flamengo's priority is the Maracanã, the João Havelange stadium can easily be expanded to hold 60 people.

The national team packed the Maracanã for Wednesday's qualifier against Ecuador. Flamengo wants the Maracanã as its home stadium. However, if it fails to win the stadium bid, the club will begin looking for alternatives. Chief among them is a partnership with Botafogo to manage the Engenhão stadium. This Friday, in a press conference in Gávea, president Márcio Braga said he finds the CBF's interest in taking over the Maracanã strange.
"This news that the stadium will be the CBF's home ground is a bit strange to us. It's either the CBF or Flamengo... I'm not going to keep paying rent to the CBF; if that were the case, I'd rather keep paying Suderj. It's the same thing. I'm not going to keep investing in studies for nothing. "If Flamengo has any problems along the way, they'll join Botafogo at Engenhão. It's a stadium that can easily be expanded to 60 seats. But the priority is Maracanã," says Márcio.
This Friday, the president of Suderj, Eduardo Paes, guaranteed that if Maracanã is actually handed over to the CBF, the big Rio clubs will continue to play in the stadium normally.

Suderj president Eduardo Paes told GLOBOESPORTE.COM by phone this Friday that clubs don't need to worry because they will continue playing at Maracanã, even if the CBF wins the bid to run the stadium. He said clubs like Flamengo can't survive without the venue, and vice versa.
"I spoke to Márcio Braga (Flamengo's president) and said there was no reason to worry. I was honored and proud to hear that the national team wants to keep the Maracanã permanently."
But, for example, Maracanã can't survive without Flamengo, and vice versa. I have no doubt that it's feasible for the CBF to have Maracanã without harming the clubs. Flamengo, Vasco, Botafogo, and Fluminense will be able to play at the stadium," Paes explains, before adding.
"Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Kaká will play three or four times a year at the stadium. They're not mutually exclusive. This situation will only further enhance the value of the Maracanã," he explains.
The Maracanã bidding process has not yet been scheduled. The bidders, Flamengo and Fluminense, were expected to begin making moves at the end of this month. However, the president of Suderj still doesn't know when the process will take place.

STJD Attorney General says it would not make sense for Obina to serve a sixth game

The controversy surrounding Obina's starting lineup (watch the video below with the striker's moves) in the derby against Vasco da Gama isn't likely to even reach the Superior Court of Justice (STJD). At least that's what the organization's attorney general, Paulo Schimidt, assures. He believes Flamengo isn't at risk of being punished for any irregularity, as Vasco's vice president of legal affairs, Paulo Reis, assumed this Friday.
Flamengo obtained the injunction as a precautionary measure. It wouldn't make sense for the penalty reduction to only take effect the following day; if that were the case, the player would be serving a sixth-game suspension. I don't think there's any risk of the club being punished, but if Vasco thinks it has the right...
The Attorney General also explains Article 233 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which states that the result of the trial only comes into effect in 24 hours.
There's a general rule in the code that the decision takes effect after 24 hours, but that doesn't prevent it from taking effect immediately. When the trial is in the first instance, as in the Gavilán case this Friday, for example, the player is cleared to play the same day, regardless of the result. The Superior Court of Justice (STJD) seeks to benefit the defendant, as he is always presumed innocent. There is no intention to harm a professional who is training. That's what happened: the punishment was disqualified, the sentence reduced to five matches, and Obina had already served his sentence.
Vasco will not benefit from the case
Paulo Schimidt also points out that, even if the complaint is deemed valid, Vasco will not benefit in any way.
"I don't know what Vasco da Gama intends, but the consequence of an athlete's irregular participation is the loss of six points and a fine for the club. The opponent gains nothing. However, I reiterate that in this case, punishment is very unlikely," says Schimidt, who assures that the prosecutor's office will not file any charges regarding the case and explains the process for obtaining the injunction.
President Virgílio Val had the power to grant the injunction and still put it to a vote in court. With four votes out of six, Flamengo won the right. It wasn't his decision alone, although that's possible.
Reis: Obina's selection is questionable
For the legal vice president, it is up for discussion whether Fla would have to wait 24 hours to release the striker

Vasco's legal vice president, Paulo Reis, will speak with president Eurico Miranda to discuss the release of striker Obina (watch the video below with the player's performances from the match) for the Clássico dos Milhões this Thursday. Hours before the game, the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) partially accepted the Rubro-Negro's appeal and reduced the player's suspension from 120 days to five matches, which he has already served.
However, Article 233 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice states that the ruling's results only take effect after 24 hours. To ensure Obina was legally eligible to play, Flamengo requested that the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) apply the ruling immediately.
"The matter is so questionable that Flamengo had to seek an injunction to field the player. The debate is whether the club should have to wait 24 hours for the decision to be made before releasing Obina," Reis told GLOBOESPORTE.COM by phone.
The Cruzmaltino director assured that there is no strategy yet to question the matter, which will be carefully evaluated by the Gigante da Colina. However, Reis stated that Flamengo risks losing three to nine points if they illegally field the player.
Calm Red-Black
Vasco's threat, however, isn't causing any panic in Gávea. The club's lawyer, Michel Assef Filho, assures that the club isn't at risk of losing points.
- There's no risk whatsoever. We have an injunction that can't be revoked. Everything was normal.
Flamengo managed to hold an extraordinary session after all the day's trials and, by four votes to two, the auditors allowed Obina to play.

On a rainy Friday afternoon, midfielder Roger participated as usual in the reserves' training session at Gávea. He has recovered from the pain in his right thigh, and coach Joel Santana decided to include him in the squad for Flamengo's match against Grêmio on Sunday at Maracanã.

A chance incident during the derby against Vasco ended Rômulo's year. The Flamengo midfielder suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be sidelined for about six months.
This Friday, the player arrived in Gávea looking very downcast and on crutches. He will undergo surgery by the team led by Flamengo and the national team's doctor, José Luiz Runco.
"It's the same injury as Obina's. Unfortunately, Rômulo tore his ligament and will need surgery. He's expected to return in six months," Runco says.
Rômulo, who came up through Flamengo's youth ranks, only became a starter after Joel Santana arrived. Before that, he was training separately in Vargem Grande.
The defensive midfielder seized the opportunity and played in the club's last 17 games. Upon leaving Gávea, he was comforted by several teammates, including Maxi, Colace, and Thiago Sales. Coach Joel Santana was moved by the news of Rômulo's injury:
"Very annoying, unpleasant. I was thrilled because I took him out of the youth academy at a time when he was forgotten. He's an athlete who plays for the coach and has nailed our defense."

To win the Libertadores, Grêmio is banking on the consistency with which it has always courted it. In most rounds, the Rio Grande do Sul team was in the top ten and in seven of them, it was in the top four. Currently, it is fourth in the Brazilian Championship, with 4 points.

Cleared by the medical department and fitness coach Ronaldo Torres, midfielder Roger is available for Joel Santana. The coach said Friday that the player will be in the squad for Sunday's match, when Flamengo hosts Grêmio at Maracanã at 18:10 PM (Brasília time).
For Ronaldo Torres, Roger isn't yet in peak physical condition. Therefore, the midfielder should play a maximum of 30 minutes against Tricolor Gaúcho.
Midfielder Jaílton, who missed the last two matches due to an injury to his right foot, could also return.
Flamengo defeats ACF/Campos in the Men's State Championship
The red-black team remains undefeated and leads the regional competition
Flamengo defeated ACF/Campos 91-79 this Friday in a State Basketball Championship match, maintaining its unbeaten streak in the competition. With the result, the red-and-black team has four wins in four games and remains in the lead.
Flamengo's standout performer in the match was winger Fernando Mineiro, with 21 points. Their big signing for the tournament, Pan-American champion Marcelinho Machado, only scored eight points. For ACF/Campos, the standout performer was Felipinho, with 18 points.

Marcio Braga speaks out against Club of 13
The president of the red-black club hopes that clubs will gain more autonomy.
Flamengo president Marcio Braga revealed yesterday in a press conference in Gávea that he considers the Club of 13 a business counter for Brazilian football:
"They're just managing TV contracts. Flamengo sells the most pay-per-view and receives the same share as the others."
The Flamengo executive also demands greater autonomy for clubs when negotiating image rights. Flamengo already has the support of São Paulo, Cruzeiro, Botafogo, and Atlético-MG, all of whom are seeking their rights.
"It's a serious problem that we want to resolve. We're going to meet to discuss the 2009 quota, which hasn't yet been announced. These five clubs want to negotiate without the participation of the Club of 13," he declared.

Flamengo will face a major loss for the remainder of the Brazilian Championship. Midfielder Rômulo sprained the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the derby and will require surgery.
According to Flamengo doctor José Luís Runco, the operation will be carried out next week and the player will be out of action for four to six months.
Rômulo collided with Marcelinho early in Thursday's derby against Vasco and had to be substituted. The young midfielder's injury is similar to the one Obina suffered in February, also against Vasco, but in the State Championship.

Flamengo president Marcio Braga announced in a press conference this Friday in Gávea that Flamengo will participate in the Maracanã bidding process in an attempt to take over the stadium.
If this venture doesn't work out, the director admitted the possibility of sharing the Engenhão with Botafogo, with whom Rubro-Negro has a great relationship.
"Flamengo will participate in the bidding process. But to conduct the analysis, we need to wait for the public notice. Without it, we can't say whether or not we'll take over the stadium. If it doesn't work out, we'll consider sharing the management of Engenhão with Botafogo. We've always discussed this with Bebeto. It would be good for Botafogo and great for us."
Regarding the possibility of the CBF taking over Maracanã, the club's president considers it a step backward for the stadium. However, he states that, in terms of management, it could be a positive move for Rio de Janeiro.
"I don't know if the CBF will join the fray. For me, it's not a practical entity. Flamengo always plays at Maracanã, and the Brazilian national team only occasionally. But it would be good to have the CBF on our side. The problem is that we want to be the owners, not the renters. It wouldn't be in our best interest to pay rent to the CBF, as we currently do with Suderj."

The day after the 2-1 derby victory against Vasco was one of absolute tranquility and work at Gávea. The players who started the match did only one weight training session at the club's gym.
The objective is the physical recovery of the athletes, since on Sunday, the team returns to the field to face Grêmio, at 18:10 pm, at Maracanã.
The rest of the squad participated in a training session on a reduced-size field. Assistant coach Andrade led the activity, which included Obina, Maxi, and Colace, who only played a limited amount of time in the derby.

Defender Fábio Luciano struggled in the Flamengo-Vasco derby last Thursday. Suspended for receiving his third yellow card, the player had to watch the Flamengo's 2-1 victory from the special seats at Maracanã. Despite the discomfort of not being able to support his teammates, he recommends the experience of just being a fan:
"A player has to watch at least one or two games with the fans, to understand what they suffer and go through. It's much better to be there; we suffer much more here," he says.
