Defender Rodrigo's open smile, showing rare satisfaction at his presentation as Flamengo's newest signing, contrasted with the board's sentiment regarding the future. Before that, there's still the state championship to come, but at the club, it's clear that all eyes are on the Copa Libertadores. And, judging by the enthusiasm displayed by the football leadership, Flamengo is on a collision course with the South American Confederation (CONMEBOL) due to high-altitude matches.
Flamengo debuts on February 13th or 20th against Coronel Bolognesi, in Tacna, Peru, and still doesn't know if it will face Cienciano and the 3.400 meters of altitude of Cuzco, since the Peruvian team competes with Wanderers, from Uruguay, for the last spot in Group 4. But, even before the definition, the impasse arose.
"Flamengo doesn't play at altitudes above 2.750 meters. That's a closed matter," said Kleber Leite, vice president of football, corroborating statements made earlier by president Márcio Braga. "If they want, they can give us a loss and take away Flamengo's points."
Rodrigo: 'Flamengo is a postcard from Rio'
Due to Flamengo's outcry after the match against Real Potosí at the 4.000-meter stadium in Potosí, Bolivia, this year, also in the Copa Libertadores, the CONMEBOL medical commission sent FIFA a report with studies that condemned matches at venues above 2.750 meters, unless the teams had at least 20 days to adapt.
FIFA heeded the suggestion, but recently released an ambiguous statement in Japan, implying that this rule would only apply to World Cup qualifying matches. This interpretation conflicts with the opinion of Flamengo's executives.
"I had lunch yesterday (the day before yesterday) with the president of the CBF, and Ricardo Teixeira assured me that the FIFA medical commission's decision applies to all competitions. He was actively involved in this process, and our guarantees are complete. Our weapons are powerful," said Kleber.
CONMEBOL, however, has a different opinion. Uruguayan Eduardo de Luca, the organization's secretary general, said he has no intention of changing the procedure. CONMEBOL is going further: the plan is to try to get FIFA to allow South American qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup to be played in cities above 2.750 meters, such as La Paz and Quito. This move has been praised by Evo Morales, president of Bolivia, whose national team plays in La Paz, at an altitude of over 3.000 meters.
Whether playing at altitude or not, Flamengo presented defender Rodrigo as one of its assets for the Libertadores. At 27, having not played since August due to left knee surgery, Rodrigo was loaned to Flamengo until 2008 by Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine. With a frank smile, exchanging his fan club caps, he seemed very happy. Smiling, he didn't adopt the traditional pose of indifferent and distant heartthrobs that players usually display.
"This jersey (number 4) fits me well. I matured a lot abroad, gained experience playing in the Champions League. But I returned to Brazil to revive my plan to reach the Brazilian national team, which was interrupted when I went to Ukraine. Flamengo didn't come looking for me so I could come here and be a little slipper. I enjoy training and playing. The club won't regret signing me."
Proof of this is that Rodrigo will start training early. On the 26th, the date of Paraguayan Gavilán's presentation, he will begin accelerating his physical recovery. Excited by the reception he received upon arrival, the defender, a native of São Manuel, in the interior of São Paulo, married with two children, didn't hide his recent admiration for the red-and-black fans.

Bolognesi, a Peruvian hero

In Brazil and the world of soccer, Colonel Bolognesi is an unknown name. In Peru, Francisco Bolognesi Cervantes, who gave his name to Flamengo's Libertadores debut opponent, is a national hero and patron of the country's army.
"These unknown teams with strange names can be a bit of a hassle. I've never heard of them, but it's best to be careful," says coach Joel Santana.
Bolognesi was born in 1816 and fought in the Battle of May 2, in which a South American alliance fought Spain. The victory sealed the independence of Peru, which claims to have secured the independence of the Americas.
The colonel returned to action during the Saltpeter War, which pitted Peru and Bolivia against Chile. In it, the Chileans annexed territories from the Peruvians and Bolivians. The latter lost their access to the sea.
Bolognesi defended Peru in the Campaign of Tacna and Arica, cities that belonged to the country. He died in combat at the Battle of Arica in 1880, in the Peruvian defeat. Chile would also win at Tacna. At the end of the war, a peace treaty placed both cities under Chilean rule for ten years, until a plebiscite was held, which was never held. Arica remains Chilean territory. But in 1929, Tacna, located in the present-day extreme south of Peru, almost on the border with Chile, was returned to the Peruvians. That same year, the Coronel Bolognesi Fútbol Club was founded in Tacna.

Flamengo's new wave of signings continues in full swing. After confirming the arrival of midfielder Marcinho, formerly of Atlético-MG, and defender Rodrigo, who was with Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, yesterday it was the board's turn to announce the arrival of Paraguayan defensive midfielder Diego Gavilán, who played for Grêmio last season. He will report next Wednesday for a medical and to sign a contract.
Gavilán, however, will not be present at the team's debut in the Campeonato Carioca, as he was suspended by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) for 120 days for having assaulted Chilean supporter Valdívia, in Grêmio's 2-0 loss to Palmeiras on October 6th of this year. The punishment, however, only applies to regional and national championships, therefore, Gavilán is free to defend the Rubro-Negro in the Libertadores.
With this signing, added to that of Jônatas, Flamengo now has eleven defensive midfielders in the squad: Rômulo, Jaílton, Léo Medeiros, Ibson, Cristian, Vinícius Colombiano, Marcinho and Colace - the last three are not yet guaranteed for 2008, as they could be loaned out.
Gavilán didn't have a good time at Grêmio, never managing to establish himself as a starter. After his suspension, he felt out of place at the Rio Grande do Sul club. Another important factor in his departure was Gavilán's strong connection with Inter, where he played for two years. The fans' rejection was evident in his first few games.
Two to go
Now, according to the manager's announcement, only two more players are expected to arrive next year. One will be the striker to form a partnership with Souza. The other is still unknown.
Libertadores games defined
Flamengo's Copa Libertadores group stage matches were announced yesterday. The Rubro-Negro will debut against Coronel Bolognesi in Peru. The date of the match has not yet been decided; it could be on February 13th or 20th. Next, the team will face the winner of the match between Cienciano and Montevideo Wanderers at the Maracanã Stadium. Flamengo will then travel to Uruguay to play Nacional. In the second leg, the order of the matches will be reversed.

Flamengo's defense for next year's Copa Libertadores has already been decided. The club's newest sheriff introduced himself yesterday at the Rogério Steinberg auditorium in Gávea. Rodrigo arrived at the club wearing a blazer but quickly made a point of putting on what he called his new skin. The player, who previously played for São Paulo and Ponte Preta, and currently plays for Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv, was warmly celebrated by some fans who attended his presentation.
The new Gávea sheriff arrived with a starting lineup and wore the number 4 jersey, which belonged to defender Ronaldo Angelim this season. "I was expecting all this. I've been following Flamengo for a while and already knew about the passion the fans had," commented the defender, excited about the fans.
Rodrigo arrived in Brazil in August to undergo surgery on his left knee. He had offers from other Brazilian clubs, but chose Flamengo. The player explained why he made this choice.
"When I arrived in Brazil to treat my knee, I received offers from some clubs, but I decided on Flamengo, first because of the fans, who are wonderful, and then because of the project presented by me and Kleber Leite," explained the new number 4, who later showed that he was aware of the pressure a player feels when wearing the shirt of the most popular club in the country.
"The responsibility of playing for a club of this size is enormous, but I think I'm ready for this challenge. I didn't come here to join the ranks of the flip-flops, I came to dedicate myself completely," Rodrigo warned.
At 27 years of age, the player knows that his chances in the Brazilian National Team are starting to end and that's why he wants to take advantage of the opportunity given by Flamengo to finally wear the green and yellow shirt.
"I had a great time at São Paulo, and my time in Europe gave me a lot of experience. It was very beneficial for me. Now I hope to have a great season here at Gávea, and perhaps earn a spot on the Brazilian national team. It's good to take advantage of the visibility of this wonderful club. If I do here what I did at São Paulo, or a little more, I'm sure I'll get a spot," added the defender, who trained with Fábio Luciano during his time at Ponte Preta. Rodrigo's contract with Flamengo runs until the end of 2008, but the club can buy the player's federation rights.

"Everything is well underway and we will announce it soon. However, this shouldn't happen before Christmas," said Kleber.

Another honoree last night was Flamengo player Gabriel Machado. Despite missing two matches due to a knee problem, the Flamengo player was the top scorer in the adult state championship.
"I'm very happy for the recognition. We've all spent the year striving and working to continually improve our level of competition. I had a knee problem and couldn't play a few matches, but I overcame it and still managed to win the championship's top scorer award. That's really great," said the player.
Gabriel, who teaches Futsal to children aged 2 to 8 at a small school, believes the sport still needs a boost to grow.
"For next year, I hope there will be an expansion of futsal, with greater investment in the sport, so that we have a good training and match structure. Only then will futsal in Rio develop and regain the space it once had. We will work hard to achieve this."
The Brazilian futsal team will face Argentina in an international match on Sunday at the Poliesportivo gymnasium in Barueri, São Paulo. Goalkeeper Rogério is one of the stars of the Pan-American champion team.
Flamengo pays tribute to architect Oscar Niemeyer
Flamengo paid tribute to the greatest Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, who turned 15 on December 100th. The club's president, Márcio Braga, visited the artist in his office and presented him with the number 100 jersey with the architect's name on the back.
According to the Rubro-Negro press office, the idea is for Niemeyer to create a monument in honor of the Rubro-Negro fans, which was declared a Rio de Janeiro Cultural Heritage Site by Mayor César Maia. Flamengo benefited most from the Libertadores group draw. Fluminense will theoretically face more challenges. Flamengo's group could feature two Uruguayans, but if they don't falter like they did this year against Defensor Sport, the presence of Nacional and possibly Montevideo Wanderers shouldn't cause too much trouble. It's even better if Cienciano doesn't come, as they'll avoid the altitude. Coronel Bolonhese, a team named after an Italian dish, is the weakest in the group.
Fluminense, on the other hand, will certainly face the same challenge as Quito, Libertad of Paraguay, and the current Copa Sudamericana champion, Arsenal of Argentina. It's a tough group with traditional South American teams. Arsenal are unlikely to fail to defeat Mineros of Venezuela in the Libertadores Cup pre-season.
Both teams (Fla and Flu) will be strong and competitive, but their opponents will undoubtedly pose a tougher challenge, which doesn't guarantee their qualification. Flamengo's challenge is less painful, at least initially.
Coach Adílson Batista's Cruzeiro could have a lot of headaches against Cerro Porteño from Paraguay, a team that deserves a lot of attention.

Flamengo and Flu have been more bold in their signings for the 2008 season than Vasco and Fluminense. And this is perfectly understandable. For them, the Carioca will not serve as a testing ground. Since it will run concurrently with the Libertadores, the two Rio de Janeiro representatives could not postpone defining their squads for both competitions. Everything indicates that both will be much stronger and more consistent than they were in 2007. The policy adopted was to seek experienced players, with experience at major clubs, and to minimize the use of risky names. Rio - Flamengo president Márcio Braga met with architect Oscar Niemeyer this Thursday morning. In honor of the artist's 100th birthday, which he celebrated on the 15th, the director presented him with a personalized shirt bearing his name and the number 100, referring to the architect's age.

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - After the group draw for the upcoming Copa Libertadores, Flamengo's board has already begun planning matchups with its rivals. In addition to Uruguay's Nacional and Peru's Coronel Bolognesi, the Rio de Janeiro club will face the winner of the match between Uruguay's Wanderers and Peru's Cienciano, who can take advantage of Cusco's altitude, a fact that hasn't pleased Flamengo's directors. Despite the possibility of facing behind-the-scenes challenges to avoid playing at altitude, Márcio Braga liked the Flamengo squad. "The squad is good, but we can't pick and choose our opponents. If Flamengo wants to be champions, they have to win games, regardless of their opponents. But I don't believe it's an easy group, as football is becoming increasingly even, and that always makes for tough matches," he said.

Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Despite recent signings, Flamengo needed to address an internal problem that was creating a tense atmosphere at the club. This Thursday, the board assured players and staff a more peaceful Christmas: November salaries, the 13th salary, and bonuses for victories and the Campeonato Carioca title played in the first half of the year were paid. The funds for salary payments came from Petrobras sponsorship money, which had been withheld since the beginning of the year due to bureaucratic issues with the Federal Government.

Márcio Braga, however, says he doesn't take credit for the success of these transactions. "I hope the team makes a strong start to the Copa Libertadores, because the players here are hired to be champions. But the credit goes to the people who run the football department. In the coming days, the board still expects to announce at least two more names for the Copa Libertadores. The board's goal is to finalize the squad by the return date, scheduled for January 2, 2008.

Defender Rodrigo was introduced this Thursday at Gávea as Flamengo's new signing for next season. The 27-year-old defender, who was playing for Dynamo Kyiv-UKR, made it clear he's ready to handle the pressure of wearing the red-and-black jersey, the ideal springboard for being remembered by coach Dunga.
"I spent two and a half years in Ukraine. I matured a lot, gained more experience, and now was the right time to return to Brazil to be remembered for the national team. Rodrigo underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in October. He believes the minor surgery will not interfere with his preseason, so much so that he will begin training before the rest of the Flamengo squad, who return on January 3rd.
