Mark of maturity
Surgery that left a scar on Renato Augusto's face transforms his playing style
Photo caption: RENATO AUGUSTO does exercises in the pool, in Gávea, one day after the victory over Nacional: certain of recovery and having overcome the trauma of facial surgery
Carlos Eduardo Mansur
When he looks in the mirror, Renato Augusto can't help but notice the scar on the right side of his face. However, he assures he's learned to live with it without trauma, without it bringing back bad memories. On the contrary, the mark from his recent facial surgery has become proof of the midfielder's definitive maturity.
His return to the team was surrounded by fears. Coach Joel Santana, the doctors, and Renato Augusto himself were concerned about the insecurity he, at 20 years old, might display after a delicate operation. Today, the consensus at Gávea is that Renato Augusto has shown himself, in his first games back from the injury, to be a seemingly more complete player. On the field, he consistently demands the ball, seeks to define plays, and leads the team in creating offensive plays.
When he took a violent blow to the face against Boavista and suffered a sunken cheekbone, Renato Augusto didn't have time to fear for his career. After surgery, he learned he had narrowly avoided this risk. Then he made a decision:
"At the time, the doctors didn't tell me. But later they told me that, by a hair's breadth, I could have run the risk of having to retire. I realized that, with one small mistake, you can lose your career. I started to see things differently. I decided to make the most of every moment. So, every game, every move is important," says Renato Augusto, who is currently ruling out plastic surgery to remove the scar.
Light climate after\ days of pressure\
Renato Augusto admits he didn't expect to perform so well in his first few matches. So much so that he consulted doctors before playing his first match after returning, against Americano.
"I asked the doctors, 'Am I at any risk?' When they said no, I decided that only by competing for every ball would the fear go away. Today, I see no reason not to put my head down for a tackle. I came back better than I expected," says Renato, who, if given the choice, will also play in the Rio Cup matches. "I'm available for anything."
The midfielder's relief after standing up to the tough marking of Nacional's Uruguayans was just one example of the lighthearted atmosphere that prevailed at Gávea yesterday. Little Gianluca didn't leave his father, Fábio Luciano, alone. Cristian's daughter, Ana Beatriz, did the same. It was also the children who helped Wednesday night's hero, Marcinho, enjoy the day after the victory that kept Flamengo alive in the Libertadores. While exercising in the pool alongside the other starters, Marcinho was surrounded by students from the club's swimming school.
"It was a special game. And the day is also going well. Receiving affection from a child is something else. Children don't lie, they're genuine," says the scorer of both goals in the game.
Fla offers squad quotas to the market
Club sells ten packages that include 2% of the rights of all athletes for 1 million
In its quest for revenue, Flamengo has begun implementing a new strategy in recent days. The club is offering equity stakes in the economic rights of all its players. For 1 million, it will provide a package with 2% of the rights of all players with whom it has contracts, including professional and youth players. Flamengo believes its squad is valued at 50 million.
To protect itself and maintain a significant stake in all its players, Flamengo limited the project to ten shares. If all are sold, the club would raise 10 million and cede 20% of all its players. The buyer would retain the rights for the duration of each player's current contract. Flamengo recently completed a review of the contracts of many of its players, extending their terms to ensure greater security for its assets.
The starting lineup should play against Cabofriense
Traffic, businessman Eduardo Uram and the MFD investment fund have already been contacted.
"There are three negotiations well underway. When there's no money, you need to be imaginative. All the money will be invested in football. We can negotiate with companies or individuals. It's better than selling players and weakening the team," says the club's vice president of football, Kleber Leite.
Investors who purchase a share will receive a return whenever a financial transaction is made with any of the club's athletes. In all economic rights transfer agreements, Flamengo and the investor establish a price that obligates the club to sell each athlete if an offer is received. If the club decides not to sell for the agreed-upon price, Flamengo must buy the investor's share.
The club is currently trying to pay the squad's February salaries and will only start receiving Petrobras installments again in July.
On the field, coach Joel Santana will select the team that will face Cabofriense tomorrow at Maracanã. The team is expected to have most of its starters. The goal is to win three consecutive matches against smaller teams—Cabofriense, Friburguense, and Madureira—to try to secure a spot in the Taça Rio semifinals. Defenders Fábio Luciano and Ronaldo Angelim are expected to be absent, as they were rested. Jônatas and Obina, who had not been starting, are out of the game, serving suspensions for their red card against Botafogo. (CEM)

Fla tries to extend its unbeaten run in Vila Velha
Rubro-negro leads the Men's National Championship with 13 victories
VILA VELHA (ES). Good Friday won't be a day off for Paulo Chupeta's team. Flamengo takes the court today at noon to face Vila Velha (ES) away from home in the National Men's Basketball Championship. Sportv will broadcast the game.
The red-and-black team has had an impeccable run in the competition so far. They are the clear leader with 13 wins in 13 games. A comparison between the campaigns shows that the Rio de Janeiro team has everything it needs to maintain their 100% record. Vila Velha is ninth in the standings, with five wins and nine losses in the competition, including one of them against Flamengo in the first half, 98-62.
"The expectation is to maintain our unbeaten run, but we have to be very careful with Vila Velha," says point guard Hélio. "They'll play without much responsibility."
In today's other game, Rio Claro faces Minas, at the Felipe Karan Gymnasium, in Rio Claro, at 18 pm.
FIFA turns player rights into rules
Rio clubs cannot delay salaries if they want to compete in international competitions.
Gian Amato
FIFA nearly wrote the Ten Commandments of football. Instead, last week, it established a package of nine rules against corruption in the sport. The most feared of these has long since ceased to be a sin among Rio de Janeiro clubs. By establishing an international licensing system, modeled on UEFA, the organization stipulates that an association cannot, under any circumstances, delay player salaries, under penalty of being banned from continental competitions such as the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana.
In a statement released on March 12, FIFA made it clear that the system will come into effect this semester, first in Asia, and will be implemented in all countries affiliated with the organization in 2009. Specializing in sports law, lawyer Dirceu Santa Rosa recognizes that Rio clubs will have difficulty adapting.
"At UEFA, the licensing system is a prerequisite for competing in any championship. This means the club must pay on time. It must comply with the law to participate in international competitions, such as the Libertadores," said Santa Rosa.
If the measure had already been in effect, Flamengo, for example, wouldn't even have traveled to Peru to face Coronel Bolognesi in the first round of the Copa Libertadores in February. The Flamengo board went two months without paying salaries until receiving the sponsorship quota from Petrobras and paying off the debt in the second half of March. The club's vice president, Kleber Leite, criticized FIFA's measure.
"That's redundant. From the moment Timemania was implemented in Brazil, clubs were already obliged to keep their financial commitments up to date," said Kleber Leite.
For the club's director, Carlos Augusto Montenegro, the clubs also need to benefit from the rule:
- They said the Pelé Law would revolutionize football. But it put an end to the clubs...
Restriction also affects the actions of businesspeople
Fluminense president Roberto Horcades approves the measure. It couldn't be otherwise. After all, he collaborated, as a member of FIFA's Strategic Council, in developing suggestions for the Executive Committee. Fluminense's financial health is covered by its sponsor, a healthcare plan.
The system also limits the role of intermediaries, whether businessmen or agents, in overseas negotiations, and restricts their interference in the administration of clubs.
- When there are good people, with a clear conscience, the relationship with the businessman becomes inevitable - stated Kleber Leite.

Little by little, the 2008 team takes shape

Renato Augusto and Marcinho could be in the ideal lineup for 2008
After much experimentation, coach Joel Santana seems to have finally found the ideal formation for Flamengo to return to its strong form of last year. The duo of Marcinho and Renato Augusto, who alternated creating and getting forward, performed well. Both celebrated their positive performance.
"Wednesday worked out well because we shared the responsibilities on the field. While one attacked, the other created," explained Renato Augusto, who made himself available to face Cabofriense tomorrow.
Marcinho, however, has been cautious and doesn't yet see himself as a regular starter. He started the week as a substitute and ended up being the hero in the victory over Nacional, and wants to establish himself as a permanent fixture in the team.
"Scoring goals is always good. I try to go in with a positive attitude to show the coach he can count on me. I try to do well regardless of whether I start or not. Of course I want to start, but I'll respect Joel's decision if he leaves me on the bench," said the player, who also described the feeling of being a hero for a day:
"I was thrilled to see those wonderful fans celebrating. It's a privilege to have such fanatical supporters by your side," he praised.
While the starters worked in the pool, those who didn't play against Nacional trained against the juniors. The starting lineup consisted of: Marcelo Lomba, Léo Moura, Leonardo, Thiago Sales, and Rodrigo Arroz; Jaílton, Jônatas, and Toró; Maxi, Diego Tardelli, and Obina.
Cristian also had his glory
Flamengo was already leading Nacional 2-0, and the match was heading toward the end. Even so, one of the most memorable plays for the fans wasn't related to Marcinho's goal. With victory virtually assured, defensive midfielder Cristian disarmed a Uruguayan striker with a gentle touch and, upon sending the ball out for a corner, celebrated as if he had won a title.
This gesture definitively established him as one of the best on the field. Yesterday, he explained the reason for the celebration.
"It was a demonstration of our will to win. After everything we've been through in recent weeks, with people saying our group was disunited, that we were out of control, it was an outburst, in which I showed the true face of Flamengo, that of never giving up and always fighting. We showed that these criticisms were unfair," said Cristian.
Fla and Cabofriense
Tickets are now on sale for tomorrow's game between Flamengo and Cabofriense, at 16 p.m., at Maracanã. The Board of Directors has lowered prices. Grandstands cost R$30 (R$15 half-price), white seats R$40 (R$20), special seats R$120 (R$60), and regular seats R$20 (R$10). Tickets are available at ticket booths 8 at Maracanã, Norte do Engenhão, Caio Martins (Niterói), and at the headquarters of Flamengo (Gávea), Fluminense (Laranjeiras), and Botafogo (General Severiano), from 11 a.m. to 17 p.m.

Joel shares with the players the merit of Flamengo being unbeatable when playing at Maraca
Upon arriving at Flamengo in August of last year—following the dismissal of coach Ney Franco, who had been hired with the promise of revolutionizing the club's football but left the club in 17th place in the Brazilian Championship—Joel Santana had to work hard to calm the brewing crisis. To stay afloat, climb aboard, and admire the horizon, the coach relied on a powerful partner: the Maracanã stadium.
Since taking charge of the team for the first time during his new stint at the club, on August 12, 2007, against Náutico, Joel has had an impressive record at the stadium. He has played 31 games, winning 25, drawing three, and losing only three, two of which were with the reserve team.
With the support of the fans and the new tactical scheme implemented by Joel Santana, Flamengo became virtually unbeatable at Maracanã. The coach, however, prefers to share the credit with the players.
"I don't know how many matches I played in charge of Flamengo, but my performance is good. The scheme worked. But it wasn't me who created it, it was the players," says Joel.
For defender Ronaldo Angelim, there are two factors contributing to the team's success when playing at home: the fans and Joel.
"The fans always support us and believe in the group and the scheme that Joel adopted fit well," he says.
Goalkeeper Bruno thinks the same way:
"With Joel, the team gained a standard of play. Today, everyone realizes that we have a certain way of playing."

Renato Augusto is not afraid to get on top
Returning from a serious injury, Renato Augusto is slowly regaining his ideal physical form and confirming his starting spot. The midfielder was apprehensive about tackling the ball head-on, but the player's courage is prevailing, and he says he'll soon overcome this fear.
"I was talking to the doctor to see if there was any problem with me sharing these balls, and he said no. I'm already feeling better and with time I'll lose this fear," said the supporter.
Luizinho: 'It was my best match wearing a Fla shirt'
Right-back Luizinho was one of the highlights of Flamengo's important 2-0 victory last Wednesday night against Nacional in the Copa Libertadores.
Léo Moura's replacement says he's been through a difficult period in his career recently, but is turning things around. He also highlights his role in the victory against the Uruguayan team.
"I was upset about the matches I played previously, replacing Léo Moura. It's difficult to join a team that's ready to play together, replacing the Brazilian national team's full-back. We really miss the match rhythm. I knew I could show more. This victory against Nacional was my best match in a Flamengo jersey, because of its importance," he said to Rádio Bandeirantes.
Regarding qualification for the next phase of the South American competition, Luizinho spoke.
"We know we have what it takes to qualify. It's not easy in the Libertadores, and our next game will be very difficult, in the altitude of Cuzco, against Cienciano. But our squad is very capable, and we're confident we can qualify," the athlete concluded.

Winger Duda (with the ball) leads the Flamengo team in the National
After two excellent victories last weekend, against Ulbra/Rio Claro on Friday (96-66), and Londrina on Sunday (95-61), the Flamengo team returns to the court today for another challenge in the National Basketball Championship. This time the opponent is CETAF/Garoto/UVV, ninth in the standings, at 12 pm, in Vila Velha (ES), with broadcast on SporTv.
Coach Paulo Chupeta's team leads the competition with a 100% record, 13 wins in 13 games, in addition to having the best attack, the best average and the competition's top scorer: winger Marcelinho, with an average of 25,6 points per game.
Another key player for the red-and-black team in recent games has been winger Duda, who is enjoying excellent form in the National Championship and has been highly praised by the new national team coach, Moncho Monsalve. The Spaniard was full of praise for the young player, praising his defensive posture and excellent attacking performance.
Esperança
Wing/point guard Hélio, who was also watched by Moncho in last week's games, spoke about his expectations for today's game.
"The expectation is to maintain our unbeaten run, but we have to be very careful with the Cetaf team. They're a team that will play without much responsibility, and that could be dangerous. We need to maintain the standard of play we've shown so far, especially in defense, which has been making the difference in these games," he commented.
Also in the 11th week of the National Basketball Championship, Ulbra/Rio Claro, fourth placed, hosts second placed Pitágoras/Minas today, at 18 pm, at the Felipe Karan gymnasium, in Rio Claro.

Marcelinho confident of a good match
The red-black winger Marcelinho, the team's absolute standout, commented on the difficulties that may be encountered in today's duel, but stated that the team will not change its stance, and will go in search of victory.
"At home, Cetaf becomes an even stronger team. Besides being a good team, Cetaf has strengthened and is aiming for a spot in the playoffs. It's going to be a tense match, especially due to the defensive strength and marking ability of both teams. We need maturity and patience to work the ball. But we won't change our playing style or stray from our signature style; we'll play at high speed," he stated.
After their stint in Espírito Santo, Flamengo will return to action in the South American League. The second leg of the competition's best-of-three quarterfinal series, against Sol de América (Paraguay), is scheduled for Tuesday, starting at 19:30 pm, at the Tijuca Gymnasium. If Flamengo wins, they'll advance to the championship's first semifinal. If they lose, the two teams will decide who will be eliminated on Wednesday.

The face of Flamengo

Of course, the victory was worthwhile. Especially because of the way it was achieved, with courage and heart. Marcinho, our hero from Wednesday, put it well: it was a victory that truly embodies Flamengo. Forgive me, but it's a credit to our qualification for the second round. My fear is that in the final round, at the same time—the matches are scheduled to take place at the same time—that we might be thrashing Coronel Bolognesi, Nacional and Cinenciano might be playing a friendly game in Montevideo. It's a shame, but that draw in the Peruvian desert of Tacna could have meant our elimination. Which would be a shame, wouldn't it?
My friend Marilene Dabus will be upset with me. But I can't help but comment on this matter. After all, are Flamengo's salaries up to date? Is something missing? Aren't image rights part of the compensation agreed with the player? My friend, I'm sorry, but you can't make one statement in the early afternoon and the Vice President of Football another late at night. I know these are easily resolved issues. And don't worry, okay? Even in media companies, there's often conflicting information.
Diogo Aragão and Carlos Henrique Nascimento sent emails commenting on last week's column. The former, to whom I've already responded, claimed that Tacna, Peru, is many meters above sea level. That's not true. It's similar in height to Nova Friburgo, for example. The latter also doesn't understand Flamengo's reasons for insisting on having Petrobras as a partner, when the club's own marketing experts assure us there are proposals from other companies. I insist: we should have the symbol of a Dutch company on our jersey.
During colonial times, much of our wealth was transported to Europe on ships from the Netherlands, which at the time encompassed present-day Belgium, where Flemish is spoken. Because the ships anchored on that beach, it became known as Praia dos Flamengos. From there, it was only a short step to Praia do Flamengo.
THE DAY
In search of more breath
Concerned about the game in Cuzco, at 3.369m, Fla does exercises to cope with the altitude, although coach Joel doesn't consider it 'another world thing to play up there'
Janir Junior
Rio - The simple breath-holding exercise the players performed yesterday in the Gávea pool made clear how difficult it is to maintain endurance when short of breath. It was just a simple exercise aimed at the 3.369-meter altitude of Cuzco, Peru, where Flamengo will play another decisive Libertadores match on the 9th against Cienciano.
Despite the match being 20 days away and four Rio Cup matches in between, the specter of altitude is already a bit scary. "Of course, it's a real hindrance. Anyone who was in Potosí last year (at XNUMX meters) knows how difficult it can be," recalled Renato Augusto, who, at the time, resorted to an oxygen tank.
To avoid creating a tense atmosphere, Joel Santana downplayed the situation: “Our players need to know that playing up there isn’t something out of this world.”
While they're away from the altitude, Flamengo is working with their feet on the ground to face Cabofriense tomorrow at 16 p.m. at Maracanã. Joel will field a mixed team. With a 20-day gap until the next Libertadores match, the idea is to use the matches as testing grounds to define the team and also to fight for the title in the second round of the State Championship.
And the coach should consolidate last year's scheme, repeated against Nacional. Cristian approved. "It's a winning scheme. I protect the defense. They've changed some pieces, but the core helps maintain the synergy," analyzed the player, who is still trying not to think about altitude:
“The calendar gave us this gap in the Libertadores, so we're going to try to disconnect from the competition and focus on the Taça Rio.”
The Libertadores victory lightened the mood at Gávea. Players made a point of dedicating the victory over Nacional to psychologist Paulo Ribeiro, who had been questioned due to the emotional instability of some players.
"There was a lot of pressure, and the victory has eased that. We thank Paulo for his work, which is also part of our victory," said Renato Augusto, who, if he could choose, would take the field tomorrow.
One of the areas under question is the attack. Souza, who was excused from training yesterday to take his daughter to the doctor, hasn't performed as expected. Obina isn't yet in peak form. Tardelli and Maxi trained yesterday among the possible starters.
With the team playing in the Rio Cup, but with his head and stamina focused on the Libertadores, Fábio Luciano broke the record yesterday for the longest time spent with his head underwater. Proof that the defense has plenty of energy on and off the field.
Flamengo hero highlights psychological work
Rio - Hero of the 2-0 victory over Nacional-URU, in the Copa Libertadores, by scoring both goals for Flamengo, attacking midfielder Marcinho stated that the work done by psychologist Paulo Ribeiro was fundamental for the team's triumph after two consecutive defeats (Botafogo and Nacional, in Montevideo.
"We had good conversations with him during the week. We had to play well to erase the impression that we were losing our heads. Paulo Ribeiro was crucial for us," said the attacking midfielder.
The player hopes to remain in the starting lineup after his good performance against Nacional of Uruguay.
"The decision is up to Joel, but I'm not hiding the fact that I'd like to be a starter," added Marcinho, who was signed at the start of the season from Atlético-MG.
Obina on the penalty spot
Rio - Responsible for the accusation of six black and white players plus coach Cuca in the Guanabara Cup final, the prosecutor of the Rio Sports Court, André Valentin, used today's holiday as justification for not having yet watched the plays involving Toró, Jônatas and Obina in the last Flamengo match in Botafogo.
In the classic, Obina and Toró attacked goalkeeper Castillo, and, at the end of the game, Jônatas argued with referee Marcelo de Souza Pinto after participating in a controversial play with Jorge Henrique.
Valentim anticipated that, because Obina is a repeat offender, he will be suspended. "There's no way around it, it's Article 254 (violent play), with a penalty of two to six games," said the prosecutor, referring to the attacker's tackle from behind on Lucio Flávio. Botafogo director Carlos Augusto Montenegro complained: "He's a brazen, double-standardist."
Luizinho: 'The important thing is that Joel now knows he can count on me'
The full-back had a standout performance in the victory over Nacional
Gabriel Esteves
Rio - It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that yesterday, an unsuspecting spectator unfamiliar with Léo Moura and watching Flamengo's match against Nacional at the Maracanã might have thought the Rubro-Negro's starting right-back was on the field. But the player who took over in the 2-0 victory, in a match valid for the 4th round of Group 4 of the Libertadores, was Luizinho, a player long forgotten at Gávea. The right-back filled in with personality for the starter, proving to the fans and, especially, to coach Joel Santana, that Flamengo has a worthy replacement for their national team full-back.
Dia Online spoke with Luizinho to find out what it was like to replace Léo Moura, who was in one of his best performances for Flamengo. The Gávea player's number 13 revealed that replacing one of the fans' idols is always very difficult:
"It was a bit difficult because he's in a really good phase: he's a fan favorite and was called up to the Brazilian national team. It's complicated because if you have a reasonable or normal performance, people come down on you and criticize you. But I think I was able to replace him well," he said.
Luizinho stated that, although he doesn't have as much skill as the starter, he makes up for it with other strengths, which were seen in Wednesday's match:
"Léo is much more skilled. I try to compensate with aggression and speed, my strengths," he explained.
Asked if, now, the absolute holder Léo Moura will have a shadow to worry about, Luizinho was conciliatory, in the "Joel Family" atmosphere:
"Not that he'll have a shadow, it's not quite like that. I think Flamengo can now be more relaxed, because they know they'll be able to count on a player who can replace Léo, who's been having an excellent season," he highlighted.
Before the decisive match, Joel Santana urged the fans to turn out en masse, promising to give the nation what it values most: passion. Luizinho's desire stemmed from the responsibility of leaving Flamengo in a better position in the Libertadores (Flamengo is provisionally leading Group 4 with seven points, but has played a game more than Cienciano and Coronel Bolognesi):
"The motivation was to go into an important game, with a lot of responsibility. The team knew we needed to win to be in a better position in the Libertadores, so that was my motivation and that of all the players," he revealed.
One of the last two remaining players, alongside Jaílton, from Gávea's "Ipatinga" phase, when former coach Ney Franco brought many players from the Minas Gerais club, Luizinho believes he has proven that he is definitely here to stay:
"I'm showing my quality. The important thing is that now Joel will be able to look at the bench and know that he has someone he can count on."
The fans too.
Thiago Salles could be used as a makeshift left-back
Rio - The big news of the day at Gávea was the selection of professional defender Thiago Salles at left-back. The young defender, who has excelled in scoring goals this Carioca season, could be fielded in that position for the match against Cabofriense on Saturday at 16 p.m. at Maracanã.
In the afternoon training session against the junior team, the starters, who played with Marcelo Lomba, Rodrigo Arroz, Leonardo and Thiago Salles; Léo Moura, Jáilton, Jônatas (Gávilan) and Toró; Maxi, Diego Tardelli and Obina, won the collective by 1 to 0, goal by Léo Moura.
Midfielder Renato Augusto, who has been looking to get back into the swing of things, is eager to play. The midfielder, who has returned to playing headers after fracturing a bone in his face, said he knew he would only gradually lose his fear of the game.
"I spoke to the doctors and was cleared to play. I know I'll only lose my fear by heading the ball. I've put that in my head and I'm taking more risks. Over time, I'll lose this fear," he explained.
The supporter must participate in at least 45 minutes of the match.
Cristian reveals that Uruguayan catimba entered the field against Nacional
Head of the field doesn't fear altitude in Cuzco
Rio - Anyone who thought there was no foul play during the match between Flamengo and Nacional this Wednesday, which Flamengo won 2-0, is mistaken. Cristian, the defensive midfielder, confirms this. The player revealed that, although not as noticeable as in other cases, Uruguayan foul play did appear on the field yesterday. According to the player, striker Richard Morales, the Flamengo's tormentor in Montevideo, constantly taunted defender Ronaldo Angelim.
Asked by Rádio Brasil if the big guy Morales provoked Fábio Luciano (with whom he was seen arguing), Cristian revealed that, in fact, his opponent was bothering Angelim:
"We on the field hear a lot of provocation. In fact, it wasn't just Fábio Luciano, who was trying to talk to him (Morales). Morales was trying to argue with Angelim anyway, but we were prepared for the match. We focused a lot, we had very good expectations and we managed to play a good match," he revealed.
Cristian, like his teammates, made a point of remembering psychologist Paulo Ribeiro, who gave a special talk at the training camp before the match:
"He's a guy who helps us a lot. This week, we took a lot of heat (criticism about the team's nervousness). Yesterday, he had a chat with us before the game. He's a very intelligent guy, he made us feel at ease and we played a good game," he highlighted.
The defensive midfielder revealed that he is not afraid of the 3400m altitude of Cuzco, Peru, the location of Flamengo's next Libertadores match, on April 9, against Cienciano:
"I've never played there, but I've been told it's very bad. If we have to play, we'll play. That's Flamengo: always overcoming challenges. It's another complication, but Flamengo is prepared to play anywhere. I think it depends on us. If we play with dedication, we can come away with a win or a draw; it's in our hands."
When asked why he celebrated a sliding tackle as if it were a goal, Cristian said it was a kind of outburst:
"It was overcoming. When I came to Flamengo, my father-in-law, Baroninho (former left winger for the Rubro-Negro), said that, here, it's not enough to just play. You have to have drive, desire, and honor the Flamengo shirt, because the fans like that. And I'm trying to do my best, I'll always give my all," he concluded.

Joel Santana says: 'Altitude is not a bogeyman'
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - While Flamengo's management is locked in a tug-of-war with the International Confederations to avoid being forced to play at high altitudes, the team's coach, Joel Santana, is doing everything he can to minimize the problem. Joel's goal is to ease the pressure on the red-and-black club, already looking ahead to the team's next Copa Libertadores match against Cienciano in Cuzco, Peru, a city located 3.360 meters above sea level.
"The important thing is to get it into our players' heads that it's not impossible to play up there. The altitude isn't a bogeyman," said the coach, who used the Peruvians' match against Nacional, from Uruguay, as an example.
"The pitch is very good, and for me, it was a normal game. Cienciano is a dangerous team, with that short guy (Chiroque) and the Japanese guy (Sawa) as their most dangerous players. We have to prepare and draw up our plan with the help of our physiologist," he concluded.
Flamengo leads Group 4 of the continental competition with seven points from four games, one more than Uruguay's Nacional and Cienciano, who have played only three matches so far. The match against the Peruvians is scheduled for April 9th, and if they win, the Rio de Janeiro team could even celebrate an early spot in the second round of the Copa Libertadores.
Prosecutor only reveals indictees next Monday\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Until next Monday, some Flamengo players will be able to sleep soundly. André Valentim, prosecutor of the Rio de Janeiro Sports Court of Justice (TJD), promises to comment on the players who will be indicted for violent or unsportsmanlike behavior in the classic match between Flamengo and Botafogo last Sunday on the 24th. Goalkeeper Bruno, defensive midfielder Jônatas, midfielder Toró, and forward Obina are facing punishment. Obina, having already been tried this year, could have his situation worsened. "Obina could be suspended for more games because he is a repeat offender," said prosecutor Valentim, who has already declared himself a Flamengo fan.
Regardless, Obina and Jônatas will no longer be able to face Cabofriense this Saturday in the fifth round of the Campeonato Carioca. This is because both were sent off against Botafogo and will serve automatic suspensions. For Saturday's game, coach Joel Santana stated that he intends to field a full-strength Flamengo squad. The starting lineup is expected to be determined after Friday's training session.
Uniform: Flamengo won't be solely concerned about the TJD (Department of Justice) next Monday. The club has scheduled the launch of its third uniform for that day. The event will take place at 13:30 pm (Brasília time) at the club's rowing headquarters.
Flamengo will debut the uniform in the seventh round of the Taça Rio, on the 30th of this month, when they face Madureira at Maracanã.

Renato Augusto rules out being rested at Flamengo for Saturday
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
After a crucial 2-0 victory over Nacional-URU in Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo turns its attention to the match against Cabofriense this Saturday at 16 p.m. at Maracanã Stadium in the fifth round of the Taça Rio, the second round of the State Championship. Coach Joel Santana is expected to field a mixed lineup, as he has done in recent domestic competition matches.
Renato Augusto rules out missing this Saturday's match against Cabofriense
However, one player in particular doesn't want to be spared from the match: Renato Augusto. The midfielder, who was sidelined for about two months due to a fractured face, made no secret of his desire to play on Saturday.
"I spoke to the doctors and they told me there's no risk of injury. I'll only lose my fear if I keep playing and fighting for balls in the air. I believe that little by little I'll lose my fear," he said.
Of the players considered starters, Joel Santana is expected to include goalkeeper Bruno, right-back Leonardo Moura, and midfielder Toró. The goalkeeper faced Nacional, while the others, suspended, were left out.
During Thursday's training session at Gávea, Joel Santana improvised with defender Thiago Sales at left back. This was a sign that Egídio, the reserve in that position, had completely lost his place.
Last Tuesday, Flamengo's vice-president of football, Kleber Leite, stated that a left-back and a defensive midfielder, both from the youth ranks, would begin training with the professional squad.
Flamengo launches third shirt next Monday
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Next Monday, the 24th, promises to be a special day for Flamengo. This is because, with much "mystery," the Rubro-Negro will launch its third jersey. The event will take place starting at 13:30 pm at the club's headquarters.
According to Flamengo's press office, "some players in the squad will provide a unique moment, with a lot of creativity, in the presentation of the new material."
"I'm still not sure if I'll be asked to parade with the new shirt. But, if I get the invitation, I'll go with great pleasure," said midfielder Cristian, in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
The third shirt will debut in the match on March 29th, at 16 pm, at Maracanã, against Madureira, in the seventh round of the Taça Rio, second round of the State Championship.
Flamengo fans will be able to purchase the new material from the 27th. According to Flamengo, the suggested price is around R$150.
With a good performance, Luizinho makes Flamengo fans forget about Léo Moura
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Luizinho managed to make Flamengo fans forget their idol Leonardo Moura. The right-back replaced the suspended starter and was one of the team's key players in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Nacional-URU at Maracanã Stadium in the Copa Libertadores da América.
Right-back replaced starter Léo Moura against Nacional-URU and was a standout
"The pressure was huge, as I replaced one of the team's great players. I had the trust of my teammates and was able to play a good game," he said in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
The player emphasized the importance of the victory, which propelled the Red-Blacks to the top of Group 4 with seven points from four matches. "It's a very tough competition. We talked a lot throughout the week and we managed to win," he said.
Luizinho commented on the team's next match, in the Libertadores, against Cienciano-PER, in Cusco, on April 9. "We're hoping for at least one point away from home. This will help us a lot in our qualification for the round of XNUMX of the competition," he emphasized.
The right-back was another player to highlight the importance of psychologist Paulo Ribeiro. "He was heavily criticized this week. But he's been doing excellent work for a long time and has the group's full trust," he stated.
For the match against Cabofriense this Saturday at 16 p.m., in the fifth round of the Taça Rio, the second round of the State Championship, coach Joel Santana is expected to field the starting lineup. Therefore, Leonardo Moura is likely to return to the team. But Luizinho seems resigned.
"Whenever Joel Santana needs me, I'm available to help. I'm confident I can repeat the good performance I had in yesterday's game (Wednesday)," concluded the right-back.

Flamengo fans move Marcinho
Hero striker says having his name shouted at Maracanã is a privilege for the few
Fred Huber
In both of Flamengo's Libertadores matches at Maracanã this year, against Cienciano and Nacional, Marcinho was there to secure the victory for the red-and-blacks. Against the Peruvians, he scored the winning goal in a difficult 2-1 victory, and this Thursday, against the Uruguayans, he scored twice (watch the video below) and renewed the spirits of Flamengo fans, wary of a possible elimination.
At the Maracanã stadium, Marcinho received a standing ovation from the approximately 50 red-and-black fans, who paid tribute to the player when he was substituted near the end of the match. It's an emotion that won't soon fade from his memory.
"Scoring goals is always important. I was very moved; that huge crowd chanting your name at the Maracanã is a privilege only a few have," he says.
Like his teammates, Marcinho believes that the victory against Nacional felt like a response to the demands placed on the team.
"Our biggest lesson from everything that happened is that we have a very strong group. Now, we have to think about winning the two competitions we're competing in," he says.
Flamengo must change its equipment supplier\ Adidas makes a tempting offer to the club, reports columnist Ancelmo Gois\ Flamengo's board met last Wednesday with the management of its sports equipment supplier, Nike, to inform them that it intends to terminate the current contract. The reason was a tempting offer from German company Adidas.\
According to columnist Ancelmo Gois of the newspaper "O Globo," the German company offered the red-and-black club a contract worth R$16 million per year. Nike is offering a maximum of R$7 million for the same period.
R. Augusto celebrates the return of confidence
Midfielder says that, in the game against Nacional, he wasn't even afraid to head the ball
Fred Huber
Renato Augusto says that Marcinho's entry was fundamental to the victory
After the tragedy of having to undergo facial surgery following a collision with an opponent in January, midfielder Renato Augusto, back on the team, celebrates the return of his confidence to fearlessly do everything required of him on the field. In Flamengo's Libertadores match against Nacional on Thursday, he played the full 90 minutes with ease and assures that he no longer fears heading the ball again. In high regard with the fans and coach Joel Santana, the number 10 is only interested in making up for lost time in his recovery.
"Now it's life as usual, forgetting what happened. Against Nacional, I felt comfortable taking risks, putting my head on the ball, and I even surprised myself. I've worked hard all this time for this, but I didn't expect to come back so confident. Everyone's affection and support were crucial in helping me overcome this challenge," he says.
Excited, he doesn't want to be spared by the coach in the Rio Cup matches, but remembers that the final decision always rests with the red-black coach.
- I'm available for whatever is necessary - he warns.
Renato Augusto approved of the chemistry with Marcinho, who scored two goals in the match. He believes his teammate's presence on the team makes it easier for him to create plays.
"It worked. The responsibility for creating plays became more distributed. Sometimes he was in the box to finish and I was creating, other times it was the other way around. It was good; it made the difference against Nacional," he says.
Criticism motivated Fla's players
Athletes say they have come together to try to end their reputation for being hot-tempered on the field.
Fred Huber
Renato Augusto says the victory was a response given by the players
After a tense start, Flamengo knew how to assert its strength at Maracanã and managed to defeat Nacional 2-0 on Wednesday (watch the goals below). The players, who had been criticized for their on-field bad blood following arguments and numerous red cards, saw the Libertadores victory as a response. Midfielder Cristian, who had a heated argument with Ibson in Uruguay, said this was normal. He said the players wanted to prove that the squad wasn't disunited.
"They said we were losing our minds, picking fights on the field. Against Nacional, everyone came together, fought, and we won. Anyone who's been here at the club every day can tell you we're not divided. There are times when criticism is good, it helps us grow, but I think it's normal to have arguments on the field. Everyone wants to win," he says.
Renato Augusto recalled that criticism of the players' behavior on the field had even reached Fla's psychologist, Paulo Ribeiro.
"The criticism motivated the players, and the victory was a response. Paulo Ribeiro's work was questioned, and he didn't deserve it," he says.
Holders relax after battle at Maracanã
Players who played the full 90 minutes against Nacional only did pool work
Fred Huber
The day after their crucial victory over Nacional in the Copa Libertadores (watch the match goals in the accompanying video), Flamengo's starting players had a relaxing day this Thursday in Gávea. The players only trained briefly in the club's pool. The reserves played a training session with some players from the youth teams. The team that faces Cabofriense on Saturday in the Copa Rio is expected to be determined during training this Friday in Gávea.
Marcinho, who scored both goals in the red-black victory, was celebrated by children in the club's pool and had to answer several questions about the match.
Renato Augusto, one of the most excited about Fla's performance against Nacional, believes that, from now on, the team will experience days of more tranquility and less pressure.
"It was a response to what we were going through, with a lot of pressure. Now we have more peace of mind to work," says the number 10.
Cristian, a lion on the field against the Uruguayans, recalled that a result other than victory would be tragic for the team's plans.
"We were under a lot of pressure. We knew that a draw would jeopardize our chances of qualifying," he says.
'Waiter' Luizinho enjoys the taste of overcoming
A disputed side contributed directly to Fla's victory over Nacional, on Wednesday
Fred Huber
Right-back Luizinho's two goals resulted from Flamengo's goal against Nacional on Wednesday at the Maracanã stadium. The victory, besides giving Flamengo more peace of mind in the Copa Libertadores, was special for the 25-year-old, who overcame the fans' doubts and played a decisive role for the team. He was responsible for replacing the suspended starter Leo Moura. As a souvenir of the memorable match, he took home the jersey of rival Richard Morales, who, according to him, was "one of the strongest players physically" he has ever played against.
This Thursday, with a sense of accomplishment, Luizinho enjoyed the special taste of victory. In an interview with GLOBOESPORTE.COM on Barra da Tijuca beach in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, the player discussed the difficulties he faced at the club and his plans for the future. He wants to always be ready to help Flamengo whenever coach Joel Santana needs him.
Did you expect this good performance against Nacional?
"I was expecting it, especially considering the work I'd been doing in training. I was very confident, and thank God, we managed to play a good match. I put in a good performance and helped Flamengo."
The plays that led to both goals began with your crosses. In your wildest dreams, did you ever imagine you'd have such a direct role in the victory?
"I didn't imagine it. I always thought about helping out by collaborating on defense, sometimes on offense, but not by having goals come from my feet. God knows how hard I'm working, and Joel knows I work hard."
Throughout the match, you were very involved and took responsibility. Did you approach this match as if it were your last?
"Definitely, especially because of its importance to us. We knew the game would be very demanding on the wings, especially because their team is very tall, and it would be difficult to break through the middle. Joel emphasized this a lot. Whenever he had the opportunity, he would ask for the ball so he could make plays."
Did you feel special motivation from your teammates too?
"The motivation was different because of the importance of the game. We knew we needed the win; it was the only result that mattered to us. The most important thing is that we got it. Now it's time to focus on Cienciano and seek qualification."
Do you think the pressure on you is excessive, especially considering you're a replacement for Leo Moura, a national team player?
It's a bit, but I'm calm about that. I know Leo's quality; he's a national team player and a fan favorite. It's up to me to find my place, and whenever the coach needs me, I want to step in and help, just like I did in the last game.
After the victory against Nacional, Flamengo improved its position in the standings. And the match against Cienciano, in the high altitude of Cuzco, becomes the key game for qualification. How are the players approaching this challenge?
With this victory, we've secured a good position in the standings. Now it's time to focus on the next Rio Cup match (Cabofriense, on Saturday) and, when we face Cienciano (on the 9th), perhaps we'll return with the qualification from there. I think it will be the most important match of the year, especially considering the current standings. If we can win in Cuzco, we'll be more at ease when we face Coronel Bolognesi at home. With all the responsibility on our shoulders, we'd come home with our fans, relying solely on our own strength.
To what extent can Cuzco's altitude of 3.369 meters interfere with Flamengo's life?
Last year, I didn't play against Real Potosí, but I was there. It's 4 meters. I did some training, and it's really tough; the ball feels lighter, and there's no air. I already know a bit about the difficulties, and if I get the opportunity to play, I hope to help Flamengo, who knows, maybe even qualify.
Flamengo is already in the final of the Campeonato Carioca. Do you believe special preparation for this match, a longer adaptation period in Peru, would be worthwhile? Have you discussed this with the players?
This hasn't been discussed with us yet, but with the ability of our coaching staff, I'm sure they will decide what's best for Flamengo.
Prosecutor leaves Fla x Bota for later
André Luís Valentin says that Holy Week disrupted his work, but guarantees complaints\ Cahê Mota\
Botafogo fans will need a little more patience to find out whether they will truly avenge all the suspensions following the Guanabara Cup final against Flamengo. André Luís Valentin, prosecutor of the Rio de Janeiro Sports Court (TJD-RJ), is responsible for the charges against six Botafogo players plus coach Cuca. He claims that the Easter holiday prevented him from watching the tapes of the controversial plays involving Toró, Jônatas, and Obina. Regarding the first-round decision, Valentin took less than 48 hours to reveal who would be charged at Botafogo. "Botafogo can keep their heads above water," he said at the time.
In last Sunday's classic, which ended in a 3-2 victory for the black-and-whites, Obina and Toró attacked goalkeeper Castillo after the second goal, and at the end of the game, Jônatas even argued with referee Marcelo de Souza Pinto after participating in a controversial play with striker Jorge Henrique (watch the video above). The black-and-whites are eagerly awaiting Valentin's statement, but it will come a week after the game.
"My deadline was supposed to be this Friday, but with the holiday, it was extended to Monday. I left the tapes to watch over the weekend. I'm swamped with other pending matters. Everything's at home, sealed in the envelope."
Even without having time to analyze the images in detail, the prosecutor learned about the moves on sports programs during the week and said that the red-and-black favorite will hardly escape a suspension.
"The only play I saw was Obina's. That's a no-go; it's under Article 254 (violent play), with a penalty of two to six games. He's a repeat offender, which makes things very complicated," he says, referring to the attacker's tackle from behind on Lucio Flavio. "I also only saw Toró's play on Fantástico, and to be sure, I need to rewatch it calmly, check if he actually took the shot, if it actually hit or not. These are the details that determine which article will be covered by it."
Sent off after an altercation with Jorge Henrique, Jônatas appears to be the Flamengo player in the most manageable situation. Despite the physical contact with his opponent, the midfielder has the match report on his side.
"I only have a photo of Jônatas's incident where he placed his head next to Jorge Henrique's. As far as I know, the Botafogo player didn't have a lump or bleeding... The referee noted in the report that he was sent off for offensive language and a second yellow card. However, if I think he intended to assault me, I'll take action."
Red-black citizen, exempt professional
Accused by Carlos Augusto Montenegro of favoring Flamengo in his decisions, André Valentin isn't afraid of being branded by a passionate prosecutor. For him, rooting for a particular team is part of his job, as long as it doesn't interfere with his work.
"I'm calm. I use the same yardstick for every team. There's no such thing as Flamengo, Fluminense, or whatever. Deep down, everyone has a team, but I try not to get involved. It's one thing for me to go to Maracanã to watch Flamengo games; it's another for it to interfere with my work. If I had any intention of harming this or that team, the president of the Federation himself would go against me. They want to apply pressure, but they won't succeed."
Regarding the words of the Glorioso leader, he was direct and democratic.
- Everyone has the right to say whatever they want, they just have to respect it.
Joel: 'It's not out of this world to play at altitude'
Coach wants to deconstruct the monster that exists in the heads of Flamengo players
Eduardo Peixoto
Joel Santana wants Flamengo players to be unafraid of Cusco's altitude
Flamengo's board is on a crusade against high-altitude games. Joel Santana agrees. However, on April 9th, the team has a decisive match scheduled at 3.360 meters above sea level in Cuzco, against Cienciano. And for now, there's no escape. The Rubro-Negro must enter the field and hold on to at least a draw to avoid relying on anyone else to advance to the next stage of the Copa Libertadores.
Flamengo's coach avoids getting involved in the political issues that a visit to altitude could bring. His job, for now, is to show his players that the thin air isn't an indestructible monster.
- We have to get it into our players' heads that it's not a big deal to play up there - he declares.
According to the coaching staff's plan, Flamengo will initially depart for Lima on Monday, April 7th. From there, the delegation will travel on a chartered flight to Cusco on the day of the match.
Joel watched Cienciano's match against Nacional - the Peruvian team won 2-1 - and made a point of demystifying the bogeyman.
"I thought it was a pretty average game, with a very good pitch. Cienciano has that short guy on the left (Chiroque) and the little Japanese guy (Sawa) who are quite a nuisance. But we'll plan accordingly, according to the physiologists," says the coach.
Crusade against altitude begins in Potosí
In 2007, Flamengo traveled to Potosí, Bolivia, and struggled at altitudes of 4.000 meters. Almost all the players became ill and required oxygen tanks. Since then, the club's board has adopted a radical stance against games held at altitudes above 2.750 meters. Recently, president Marcio Braga visited Europe to rally allies to oppose the ban on matches at high altitudes. For now, the resolution only applies to competitions organized by FIFA.

Flamengo must terminate contract with Nike
Adidas has a chance of becoming the new supplier of sports equipment\ Nelson Ayres\
The Flamengo/Nike partnership is nearing its end. Last Monday, Flamengo sent an extrajudicial notice to the sportswear company, requesting termination of the contract, alleging breach of clauses. Furthermore, it seeks compensation for losses and damages due to the royalties lost due to the club's jersey shortage in stores nationwide.
Flamengo's executives are already aware of Adidas' interest in sponsoring the club. When contacted by the LANCE! reporting team, the club's legal vice president, Adalberto Ribeiro, said he could not comment on the notification because it is a confidential matter.
In addition to the lack of jerseys, Flamengo complains about a lack of equipment for its professionals to use, as well as marketing issues. If the contract is not terminated amicably, the case will end up in the São Paulo Court of Justice.
Coincidence or not, Nike brought forward the launch of the third shirt to Monday, which was only due in May.

Fred Gomes RIO DE JANEIRO
Right-back Luizinho, one of the main highlights of Flamengo's 2-0 victory over Nacional, was happy to be constantly used in the team, attributing this sequence of games as a key factor in his increase in production.
"With this run of games, something I hadn't had in years, I was able to show Joel, the fans, and the board that I have the ability to be a starter. I understand why Léo Moura is the starter, because of everything he's done; he's a fan favorite and a national team player, but I'm 25 years old and I need to show up," he stated.
Luizinho, who debuted for Flamengo on January 25, 2007, has played 15 games for Flamengo, one fewer than Marcinho, who arrived this year. When asked if these numbers reflect that he doesn't get many chances on the team, the right-back denied it:
"It's a positional issue. Marcinho plays in midfield and as a striker. I only play in Léo Moura's position. When he's not playing, I get my chance. It's a shame that opportunities only arise when Moura (Léo) isn't playing, but it's understandable," he concluded.

Flamengo and Fluminense are well on their way to qualifying for the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. Both Rio de Janeiro clubs are leading their groups and rely solely on themselves to advance in the South American competition.
According to mathematician Tristão Garcia, Fluminense is the Brazilian club in the best shape. With seven points from three games, the Tricolor has a 95% chance of qualifying. For Tristão, everything indicates that with another win, the club will secure one of the spots.
For Flamengo, the situation is a bit more complicated. The Rubro-Negro needs to earn four more points in its last two games to qualify, one of which will be in the high-altitude Cuzco, Peru. For now, the club leads Group 4, but with a game in hand over Cienciano (PER). Its chances are 67%.
"Fluminense has everything it needs to qualify because they still have two home games to play and have shown they're strong in the Libertadores. Flamengo can qualify, but they have to earn at least one point away from home and win at the Maracanã," Tristão said.
Of the other Brazilian teams, Cruzeiro has one foot in the hole. The Minas Gerais team has a 92% chance of advancing in the Libertadores. São Paulo, which still plays this Thursday, has a 68% chance, and Santos has a 57% chance.

LANCEPRESS!\ Coach Joel Santana led the movement among Flamengo's reserves and juniors, this Thursday, in Gávea, and may change the team's game plan for next Saturday's match, at 16 pm, against Cabofriense, for the fifth round of the Taça Rio.\
Unable to count on Egídio for this training session—the left-back underwent treatment on his ankle—the coach lined up the team in a 3-4-3 formation and may use that formation this weekend. As he has done in some State Championship matches, he is expected to rest his starting players for this match.
Joel Santana lined up the defense with Rodrigo Arroz, Leonardo and Thiago Salles; in the middle, he used Leonardo Moura, Toró (both did not face Nacional, in the Libertadores, due to suspension), Jônatas and Jaílton; up front, Diego Tardelli, Obina and Maxi, with the latter also playing as a winger on the left, in a variation to the 3-5-2.
Flamengo was defeated by Botafogo in the Carioca last Sunday. Flamengo has nine points in Group A and is in second place.
Cabofriense, with four, is in fifth place in Group B and, with 14 points in the overall standings, the team, already in the 2008 Brazilian Series C, is fighting for a place in the 2009 Copa do Brasil.
