Joel wants to beat Bolognesi today to pave the way for his successor in the Libertadores

Four games into his farewell match, Joel Santana faces Coronel Bolognesi in the Libertadores today at 19:30 p.m. at the Maracanã, probably a first in his career. He's intensely enjoying his final moments at Gávea and is dedicated to planning a match that, if he wins, will yield rewards he won't reap. Flamengo needs to win to finish first in Group 4 and have home advantage in the second leg of the round of XNUMX. He's also trying to secure the best record of the entire tournament, which would guarantee a home victory until the final. To do so, with a goal difference of three, he needs to win by five goals to equal Fluminense's goal difference (eight) and surpass them in goals. But Joel will only manage the team in the Libertadores until the first leg of the next stage.
Even so, there was no trace of Joel's behavior that resembled a coach about to leave. On Monday night, after announcing his departure, he gathered the coaching staff to watch Bolognesi videos and discuss the game. Yesterday morning, he gave a long talk to the group. The traditional pre-match kickabout was followed by a long set-piece practice. Between plays, he waved to fans who chanted "Joel stays."
"It's not easy. The fans really get to me. I want to leave the club in the best possible condition, in pole position. The worst thing is to be paid last, as I have been," said Joel, referring to his successor.
The subject of succession, in fact, was banned by vice president of football Kleber Leite until the end of the state championship. Yesterday, in Recife, where his Atlético-MG team will play in the Copa do Brasil, Geninho said he had been approached by Flamengo and that he would wait until the end of the Campeonato Mineiro, although he intends to stay with the club until December.
Parreira confirms Joel's departure
Today, Joel will field a team focused on a future that doesn't belong to them. The Nacional vs. Cienciano match, at the same time in Montevideo, completes the group stage. If Flamengo draws and the Uruguayan team wins, Flamengo will drop to second place.
"The first goal is to finish first in the group. Then we'll see what our opponents might be. The key is to play a local team, not travel far. We'll decide whether or not we go in with a vengeance to win by five goals," said Joel, referring to the result that would put Flamengo in first place overall. "The match is very important for the future."
Even as he leaves, Joel knows that his final trip with Flamengo will have a direct impact on the title. According to the coach, América (Mexico) has a chance of finishing as the worst second-place team. In this case, Flamengo wouldn't be looking for a rout. Before the game, Joel will receive a report and outline his plan. If he believes that first place overall could lead to a shorter trip, then he would aim for five goals. Certainty about the rival will only come after São Paulo's group matches, well after Flamengo's match.
"If a ball falls at my feet, under the goal, I'll do it. Then we'll think about the trip," joked forward Marcinho, who gets a chance to replace Renato Augusto, who is still experiencing leg pain and, like Ibson, will be rested.
The announcement in Rio of Joel's departure was met with mixed reactions in South Africa. Local federation officials stated that they are still negotiating the next coach. However, Carlos Alberto Parreira, the former South African coach responsible for the appointment, assured that Joel is the chosen one.
"It's not even worth talking about anymore. The news was released here and not there. But there's no reason to worry," Joel said.
The South African newspaper "Daily News" criticized Joel's hiring. "Bafanas hire Mr. Nobody," the headline read. The newspaper says Joel has won few significant titles and has no experience with international teams. It describes him as a coach who likes to use a clipboard, while most coaches have already embraced the use of computers.
Flamengo: Bruno, Leonardo Moura, Fabio Luciano, Ronaldo Angelim and Juan; Cristian, Jailton, Kleberson and Toró; Marcinho and Souza. Colonel Bolognesi: Alvarez, Farfán, Balbín, Ostersen and Cortez; Uribe, Novoa, Liñares and Ramirez; Vigil and Barrios. Referee: Ivan Gamboa (Bolivia).

Inheritance will impact accounts
Club needs titles to sell players and meet goals
TERESÓPOLIS. One of Joel Santana's last jobs at Flamengo will have a direct impact on the club's future in 2008. The club's financial situation is worrying. The board admits to seeing short-term solutions, but acknowledges that future results are crucial for the club to meet its commitments, which include a monthly payroll of R$3,6 million, including expenses.
The club planned to sustain itself for the first three months of the year with funds from Petrobras and Nike. Now, it no longer has any quotas to receive from these sponsors. For the rest of the year, according to the finance department, one of Flamengo's guidelines is to try to include kickbacks in the ongoing negotiations for contracts with TV, Petrobras, and the future sports equipment supplier—possibly Olympikus, which is offering R$20,3 million annually starting in 2009. However, the most tangible sources are ticket sales, Libertadores shares, and player rights sales, which, to prevent Flamengo from ending the year in the red, should total R$25 million. Executives admit that if it doesn't reach this amount in player sales, the club will face problems.
All these revenue streams depend on the team's performance on the field. To generate good box office revenue, the club must win the State Championship and continue advancing in the Libertadores. The same applies to player negotiations. Although the club has signed long contracts with a significant portion of its squad, with high termination fees, these amounts will only be converted into equity through victories. To try to speed up the process, the club has created quotas: for €1 million, an investor can purchase 2% of all the club's players. Three of these are practically closed: with the MFD fund, Traffic, and businessman Eduardo Uram.
To give you an idea of the impact of on-field results, Flamengo's budget projects revenue of R$100 million. FlaTV currently has around 6 subscribers, far below the initial forecast. Currently, the club receives R$50 per month, compared to around R$300. Management is betting that the club's football performance can boost this revenue. Olympikus' interest is used as an example: for Flamengo, it only arose with the significant exposure the club received during its run in the 2007 Brazilian Championship. (CEM)
Sure hands keep the dream going
Marcelinho shines, Fla beats Corrientes and today tries to tie the final series of the South American

Faced with the chance to start a comeback in the South American Men's Basketball League or the disappointment of losing the continent's most important title in the first home match of the best-of-five series, Flamengo chose the former. After suffering two defeats in Argentina, Paulo Chupeta's team prevailed last night at Maracanãzinho. With a stellar performance from point guard Marcelinho, who topped the scoreboard with 44 points, the red-and-black team defeated Regatas Corrientes 98-79. Today, hoping to even the series at 2-2, Flamengo returns to the gym at 17:19 p.m., before the team's soccer game against Coronel Bolognesi at 30:XNUMX p.m. at Maracanã.
- When Marcelinho is happy and emotionally balanced, it always makes a difference - summarized the red-black coach.
Officials expect more than ten thousand fans to pack Maracanãzinho today to see the basketball team. Tickets cost R$10 (full price) and R$5 (half price, for students and fans wearing the club's jersey). The match's hero, who broke Corrientes' nine-game winning streak in the League, urged the fans to come out. If they defeat the Argentines again, Flamengo will play their fifth and decisive match in Corrientes on the 29th or 30th of this month.
"I started well, and my performance gave me confidence. Playing for Flamengo is something special because the fans don't let the team's rhythm drop. I hope Maracanãzinho is even fuller tomorrow," said Marcelinho.
Yesterday, after the match, Vice President of Olympic Sports Patrícia Amorim was already thinking about a motivational film to show the players at the training camp. Before yesterday's match, Paulo Chupeta's team watched "Facing the Giants," about an American football team that went into a decisive series behind and came back from behind.
Maracanãzinho wasn't full yesterday, but the approximately six thousand people present encouraged Paulo Chupeta's team from the start.
With the ball in play, the red-and-blacks soon realized that pressure wouldn't intimidate their rivals. The match started evenly, with Marcelinho and Montecchia hitting three-pointers, making the score 7-7.
From then on, Flamengo began to effectively implement their pivot game, with Alírio gaining an advantage over their opponents in the paint. Marcelinho proved he was having an inspired night, converting four of Flamengo's seven three-pointers in the first quarter. The Argentines, in turn, lacked the efficiency of the first two games. Flamengo closed the period with a 33-18 lead.
Fred is injured and will be examined today
The game continued to be on target in the second quarter, especially Marcelinho's. By the end of the first half, he had scored 31 points, six fewer than the entire Corrientes team. Of those, he made six three-pointers on seven attempts. Without much effort, the red-and-black team closed the first half with a 58-37 lead.
Corrientes even attempted a comeback in the third quarter, falling behind by 14 points, 61-47, with 5:37 remaining. But the red-and-black team regained its rhythm, with Alírio once again overcoming the Argentine defense to secure a 75-56 lead. The only regret was the injury to Fred's middle finger on his right hand, which will be re-examined today. On defense, the red-and-black team also shone, managing three blocks in the third period alone.
The decisive period served only to allow Flamengo to manage its advantage and save itself for today's match. With the roar of the fans and the help of Marcelinho, the red-and-black team stayed alive in the South American League final: 98-79.
Flamengo: Fred (3), Amiel (7), Marcelinho (44), Alírio (11) and Coloneze (4). Wagner (5), Hélio (11), Duda, Fernando Mineiro (11) and Maicon (2) came on. Corrientes: Montecchia (4), Martinez (15), Stanton (17), Robinson (16) and Lopez (15). Rivero (10), Serantes and Temute (2) came on.

New coach only after decision
Kleber Leite does not want speculation and will only announce the commander on May 5th

The day after announcing his departure from Flamengo, coach Joel Santana could not hide his sadness at leaving the club
The fresh air of Teresópolis didn't bring Flamengo the peace they hoped for as they prepared for their matches against Coronel Bolognesi today and Botafogo on Sunday. Quite the opposite. After announcing the departure of coach Joel Santana on Monday, vice president of football Kleber Leite issued a warning: he won't reveal the new coach until the second leg of the final.
Speculation at Granja Comary is in full swing. Names like Internacional's Abel Braga, Paulo Autuori, currently in Qatar, and Tïte, who is unemployed, are the most popular at the moment. However, there's no point in speculating, as none of them will be announced before May 5th.
"I'd like to ask you a favor: until the Carioca final, don't ask me about the name of the new coach. I'm the only one leading the negotiations, so before that, no one will know who Joel's replacement will be," warned Kleber Leite.
South African Football Confederation director Raymond Hack denied yesterday that he had already reached an agreement with Flamengo's current coach. However, both Kleber Leite and former South African coach Carlos Alberto Parreira confirmed that Joel will take over at Bafana Bafana.
"It must be Joel, because he was nominated, was already negotiating, and showed interest in leading South Africa. The idea was for the news to be announced after the finals, but Kleber Leite preferred to announce it early to make everything transparent," Parreira explained. The director, however, ruled out any possibility of the negotiations going backwards.
"That hypothesis doesn't exist; the situation is irreversible. My sources are Joel and Parreira themselves. They're not crazy enough to make up a story like that. I'm already looking for a new coach," the director said.
Joel Santana couldn't hide his disappointment at leaving the club. He doesn't want to discuss the matter again until he signs a contract with the team that will host the next World Cup.
"Everything that's being said now is speculation. I'm letting it happen, waiting for a decision," said the coach, who was touched by the chorus of around 40 fans who attended training at Granja asking him to stay: "This affects me a lot, mainly because I'm leaving a pleasant situation, where I'm recognized. But I've already explained the reasons for my departure," he concluded.
Marcio Braga contradicts vice president of football
Although vice president of football Kleber Leite stated that he would only announce the new coach on May 5th, several names have been speculated. Besides Abel Braga and Tite, another coach who has surfaced is Paulo Autuori, currently with Al-Rayyan in Qatar. His advisor, Luiz Pimentel, stated that the coach will officially comment on the club's alleged interest today. Regarding Abel Braga, currently with Internacional, the Flamengo president denied any negotiations.
"Of course we like that name. But we're not going to look for a coach who is employed and, especially, who is playing in finals," said Marcio Braga, who has already confessed to being an admirer of Abel.
Geninho, from Atlético-MG, also confirmed that he had been approached by someone linked to Flamengo but stated that he will stay at Galo until his contract ends at the end of the year.
Decision — Tickets for the first leg of the final between Flamengo and Botafogo, on Sunday, at Maracanã, will go on sale starting today. The available capacity is 68.030. The green, yellow, and white bleachers cost R$40. Special seats cost R$150, and regular seats cost R$30. Seniors, children under 12, and students pay half price upon presentation of ID. Tickets will be sold at the Flamengo, Fluminense, and Botafogo stadiums and at Caio Martins Stadium (Niterói). Starting tomorrow, tickets will also be sold at ticket booths number 8 at Maracanã and north of Engenhão.
Renato Agusto and Ibson will be spared today
Two key players in Joel Santana's squad will miss Flamengo's match against Coronel Bolognesi today. Ibson and Renato Augusto, who are recovering from thigh and knee injuries, respectively, will be rested for the first leg of the Campeonato Carioca final on Sunday against Botafogo.
Ibson stayed at the hotel yesterday morning and did not go to Granja Comary with his teammates. Club doctor Walter Martins explained the situation of these two players.
"The pain that Ibson was feeling in his thigh has reduced considerably and there is no injury. Our idea is to have him 100% for Sunday's classic," said the doctor.
Regarding Renato Augusto, who ran around the field, the situation is similar. He's recovering from knee pain and is a definite no-show for today. Unlike Ibson, who is virtually guaranteed to play Sunday, Flamengo's number 10 isn't confirmed to play against the black and whites.
"Renato hasn't trained with the ball yet because he's working on his fitness. I believe he'll play against Botafogo," Martins concluded.
Jaílton eager for the big milestone
Midfielder Jaílton, who will replace Ibson in today's match, will reach the 50th appearance for Flamengo when the referee blows the opening whistle at Maracanã. Despite being skeptical of the demanding Flamengo fans, Jaílton has always enjoyed the admiration of Joel Santana. He spoke about the milestone.
"I'm looking forward to it; after all, it's an important achievement. I've been training well and I'm prepared if Joel chooses me. I'm not just thinking about these 50 games. We have to be focused on winning above all else," he said.
Jaílton also spoke about the opponent. According to him, although Coronel Bolognesi is languishing at the bottom of Group 4, it's a team with quality.
"It's a team that concedes few goals. That's why we're going to play as seriously as possible to get the score we need," he concluded.
Romário — Yesterday, it was speculated that Baixinho would represent Flamengo in the Brazilian Championship of Showbol. The news, however, has not been confirmed by either the player or the Flamengo board.
Marcinho still dreams of being an artilleryman
Flamengo's top scorer in the Libertadores, Marcinho wants to get closer to Marcelo Moreno
Confirmed in place of Renato Augusto for today's match, Marcinho will do everything he can to continue scoring against his opponents and gradually close in on the Libertadores' top scorer, Marcelo Moreno, from Cruzeiro, who has already scored seven times.
Marcinho has three goals in the competition, and the match against Bolognesi is his big chance to close the gap on the Cruzeiro striker. However, talking about scoring is still new to the player.
"Being the top scorer is something very new. Our goal is to win, and if I can score a lot of goals to get close to the top scorer and also help Flamengo, I will do it," said the player.
Regarding the possibility of trying to get a result during the match against Bolognesi to avoid a potential match against a Mexican team due to the long trip, Marcinho warned that if he has the opportunity to score, he won't want to think about the trip. He guaranteed he'll put the ball in the back of the net.
"As a striker, I'll always try to score. Even if I need to get a clear score, if the ball ends up in front of me, I'm sorry, but I'll put it in the back of the net. No striker would do it any other way," said Marcinho, who isn't worried about the strain of a potential trip to Mexico. "For me, if we have to face a long trip, we'll face it and then come back here and beat Botafogo," he added.
Leadership and nothing more
Flamengo faces Bolognesi to confirm first place in the group and escape América-MEX

Cristian and Léo Moura joke during the last training session before the match against Bolognesi
With qualification for the second phase of the Copa Libertadores secured with a round to spare following a brilliant 3-0 victory over Cienciano in the high-altitude Cusco, today's match for Flamengo could be meaningless. However, if the team stumbles against the weak Coronel Bolognesi team at 19:30 p.m. at the Maracanã, and Nacional de Montevidéu confirms its favoritism against Cienciano, the red-and-black team will lose first place in Group 4 and will have to play the second leg of the second phase away from home.
In addition to leading the Group, the game is for Joel Santana to prepare the team for the finals of the Campeonato Carioca against Botafogo.
Without midfielder Ibson, who felt pain in his left thigh during training last Monday, and Renato Augusto, who has pain in his right leg, Joelz had to field Jaílton and Marcinho. With these changes, Flamengo will no longer play in its traditional 3-6-1 formation and will return to a 3-5-2, with Marcinho and Souza up front.
Despite wanting to beat Bolognesi to become the leader of their group in the competition, the board and the red-black coaching staff fear a possible encounter with América-MEX, not because of the tradition of the five-time Concacaf Champions League champion, or its gigantic Azteca Stadium, which holds approximately 114 people.
What really worries is the strain that a trip to Mexico would bring to the team, which plays the second match of the Carioca grand final the following Sunday.
The coach confirmed the red-black's fear and said that if he can do something to avoid traveling the 7.700 km that separate Rio de Janeiro from Mexico City, he will do it.
"We paid a high price for a long trip between decisive games. We're still being charged for it today. We'll look at all possibilities to try to get a team from the surrounding area," said Joel.
Vice President of Football Kleber Leite said he would think of something within sporting legality to avoid the trip, but made it clear that victory is the club's priority.

Winger Marcelinho (D) had a great game and dismantled the Argentine defense
With a show from forward Marcelinho, who scored 44 points, Flamengo defeated Regatas of Argentina 98-79 (58-37) yesterday at Maracanãzinho and remains in the final of the South American Basketball League. Today, at 17 p.m., at the same venue, Flamengo must win to tie the best-of-five series at 2-2 and force the final game in Argentina.
"We went in for the all-or-nothing. We couldn't lose. The fourth game will be very different and, without a doubt, much more difficult. But Flamengo is prepared. I hope the fans turn out in large numbers. I'm making this call-up because she's our sixth player. It's a historic moment for Flamengo basketball," commented Marcelinho.
The Game\ Determined to stay in the playoffs, Flamengo put on a real show in the first quarter and managed to unbalance the solid Argentine defense. Forward Marcelinho Machado demonstrated his talent with his deadly three-point shots, and the Red-Blacks opened up a beautiful lead: 33-18, to the delight of their fans. Marcelinho scored 18 points, making 100% of his shots. Cuban forward Amiel's courage and determination stood out. Flamengo's aggressive defense significantly reduced the play of Montecchia, Regatas' star player.\
Well-focused, Flamengo successfully maintained its momentum. In addition to Marcelinho's excellent performance, Wagner, who hadn't played in the first two games, was fantastic on the rebounds. Hélio also provided the speed and precision needed for Flamengo's successful counterattack. The Rio de Janeiro team went into halftime with a healthy 58-37 lead.
Tranquility\ The third quarter was the most evenly matched. The Argentines finally caught their breath and tried to close the gap. But Marcelinho remained inspired and kept Flamengo's attack efficient. Points came and went, and the Red-Blacks didn't relinquish their lead, winning 75-56.\
The final quarter was more of a study period, with both teams already thinking about the fourth game. However, the giant Wagner put on his own show in the paint, grabbing no fewer than 19 rebounds.
The red-black fan has an obligation to go to Maracanãzinho today and do his part to lead his team to a new victory.

The Master's Farewell

The phrase is blunt, attention-grabbing, and even arouses a hint of envy, especially in those who, like this columnist, call the vulture "my laurel" and Jesus "Genesius." The phrase? Here it is: "It's my chance to earn in 30 months what I haven't earned in 30 years." Author: Joel Santana.
I don't know how much Flamengo's coach earns. I can assure you it's above, well above, what a common man earns, and very close to what the well-off pocket. And that 30-months-in-30-years calculation is truly jaw-dropping. I can already imagine the aforementioned coach inviting Romário to a street race—or street race, as you wish—both of them in shiny Ferraris. Well, never mind. How much people earn or don't earn isn't a topic that concerns me. I have other concerns. The first is personal, with my friend Parreira, who is suffering from serious family problems. And I offer my condolences.
The other is technical and refers to Flamengo's squad for the State Championship final. As much as the club wants to appear as if everything is perfectly normal and natural, I fear the squad has already been morally affected by the announcement. This is a group of players extremely close to the coach, who blindly believe in what they're being told. I don't know, but I think this goodbye is more painful than anyone could imagine or predict. There's friendship, complicity, and camaraderie in the story, and that's where things get a bit complicated.
If Botafogo is having trouble selecting the team due to injuries, I believe that the announcement of Joel's departure has made everything much more balanced.
Only one thing bothered me about this episode. I didn't like hearing from some fans that Joel is just another mercenary with no love for the club. What nonsense! Joel sets out in search of a spectacular situation, an adventure every man dreams of experiencing one day. He leaves behind another story of victories, a story that truly reflects Flamengo.
Bravo, Joel!
THE DAY
Márcio Braga: 'I'd rather face Botafogo, because we win and they cry'
Rio - The first episode was the turbulent 2007 State Championship final. The second was the Guanabara Cup final, won by Flamengo and hotly contested by Botafogo fans. The climax was the intensification of the rivalry between the clubs after Souza's "crybaby." Later, fearing that the rivalry would escalate into violence between fans, the clubs began to adopt diplomatic approaches.
This Tuesday, Flamengo president Márcio Braga once again stirred up the rivalry between the two teams in a healthy way. When asked if he preferred Fluminense or Botafogo in the state final, the director responded bluntly:
"I was really hoping it would be Botafogo, because they're the favorite and I like beating Botafogo, because when we win they cry, I think that's good," he said, laughing, in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
However, it's a mistake to think the president is overconfident or trying to reignite controversy. The president, in good humor, stated that the classic has history, and winning or losing is part of it:
"We're used to winning and losing. In my career, I've won 40 championships with a professional soccer team, win or lose. Botafogo is a great opponent, I have no doubt about that. I want to remind you that I've been through this before. I was president of Flamengo when we reached the 1992 Brazilian Championship final. They said their team was better, and we won the first game 3-0 and the second 2-2. We're used to playing Botafogo; I've also lost to them, and they've just been crowned champions... winning and losing is part of it; that's what makes sports great," he reflected.
That's why Márcio Braga gets confused when he talks about being favorites for the State final:
"Actually, there's no favorite; these are two great teams that play beautifully. Botafogo recently beat us 3-0 and just won the championship. They're a great opponent that's on a roll, so maybe that's why they're the favorite. But Flamengo has an undeniably great team. We'll fight on equal terms. But, from a personal perspective, as a fan, Márcio Braga, I like beating Botafogo, because we win and they cry," concluded the president, unable to hold back his laughter.
Joel Santana: It's Africa or the streets!

Teresópolis - Yesterday, one day after Flamengo's vice-president of football, Kléber Leite, forced Joel Santana to reveal that he would leave the club after the second leg of the state championship final against Botafogo on the 4th, the director of the South African Football Confederation, Raymond Hack, said that the contract for Joel to replace Carlos Alberto Parreira has not yet been finalized. Even if no agreement is reached, the coach will not remain at Gávea.
In an interview with the South African newspaper 'Daily News', Hack stated: "He (Joel) can say whatever he wants. We are avoiding speculation, but I assure you that only when the process is complete, when we have settled all the contractual issues, will we announce the new coach," the director warned.
Yesterday, at Granja Comary, in Teresópolis, Joel avoided commenting on the matter, but appeared calm.
"I'm not worried. Anything I say will become speculation. It's behind-the-scenes stuff, and I'll tell you how it all happened soon so there's no mystery," said the coach, who during yesterday's training session heard chants of "Joel stay!": "The demonstration is pleasant and really moves me. But the situation is already defined."
If the negotiation does not materialize, Kléber Leite made it clear that the coach will not remain at the club.
"Flamengo isn't a seesaw. It's an irreversible situation. Now, it's their problem, not ours. On the 5th, the new coach will be introduced; nothing before that," assured the director, who declined to comment on potential replacements. Abel Braga, currently at Internacional, is gaining increasing traction at the club.
Despite having already ruled Joel out of Gávea regardless of the outcome with the South African national team, Kléber believes the negotiation will be successful: “Joel said he already has a pre-contract, and Parreira also confirmed the negotiation to me, which came to me already defined, without any chance of negotiation.”
Parreira confirms
Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira also believes there will be no problems in the negotiation: “He has already spoken to the federation, expressed his interest, and when I had a meeting with the directors, the situation was already defined,” confirmed Parreira, in an interview with the website globoesporte.com.
Joel Santana, 'Mr. Nobody'
Janir Junior
Rio - Part of the South African press has decided to campaign against the signing of Joel Santana. Yesterday, the 'Daily News' newspaper ran the following headline on the cover of its sports section: 'Bafana get Mr. Nobody', meaning 'Bafana (as the national team is known) signs Mr. Nobody'.
In the report, the newspaper highlights that the coach has managed 26 teams in almost 27 years of his career, won minor titles, only regional ones, has no experience with national teams and, abroad, had discreet stints in Japan and the Middle East.
The publication even scoffs at the fact that Joel uses a clipboard, while most coaches these days work with computers. The coach is also called a down-to-earth commander.
In South Africa, the host country of the 2010 World Cup, there is strong pressure for the new coach to be non-foreign. Pitso Mosimane, who worked with Parreira for 15 months, is one of the names suggested by the local press.
Missing details
The confusion surrounding Joel Santana's move to South Africa was due to the rush to confirm the deal, as, as far as we know, contractual details and the actual signing of the contract are still pending.
According to the coach, his plan was to announce his departure only after the State Championship final, but Kléber Leite wanted the announcement to be made on Monday. Yesterday, for about 30 minutes, Joel spoke with the group and again touched on the subject of his transfer, so that nothing interferes with the decision against Botafogo. He told the players that he wants to leave with the team in pole position.
One of the players jokingly suggested Fábio Luciano as the new captain. "We wish him all the best, and the announcement of his departure won't affect our motivation," assured captain Fábio Luciano.
Two of the several coaches speculated on Monday to replace Joel have already ruled out the possibility. Ney Franco, currently at Atlético-PR, said he wasn't approached but would respond negatively if approached, as he wasn't happy with the way he was dismissed during his recent stint at Gávea. Geninho confirmed he was approached on Monday night but prefers to stay at Atlético-MG, where he has a contract until December.
Fla takes Bolognesi with his head in Botafogo
Janir Junior
Rio - Right next to the Granja Comary training field in Teresópolis, a Botafogo flag flies. It's just another reminder of the first game of the State Championship final on Sunday. Despite the talk of only thinking about Colonel Bolognesi, the training sessions, the rehearsed plays, the attempt to avoid grueling travel in the Libertadores Round of 16 between the final matches, and the precautions taken make it clear that Botafogo is always on the minds of the red-and-black fans.
"There's anxiety, nervousness. We have crucial matches, and there's no time to breathe. But it's good for Flamengo to relive those decisive moments," said coach Joel Santana.
And caution was in order on the field. Íbson, with pain in his left thigh, and Renato Augusto, with edema in his right leg, will be rested today. "We have no reason to carry these issues into Sunday," the coach analyzed.
Just like Botafogo coach Cuca does yesterday, after the traditional pick-up game, Joel Santana exhaustively practiced set-piece plays, such as free kicks and corners.
The team plays tonight at Maracanã and returns tomorrow to Teresópolis, where they'll stay until Saturday. Joel Santana's departure isn't seen as a source of emotional imbalance, but rather as a motivator for Sunday. "We have something that sets us apart from other teams. The squad is confident," analyzed Kléber Leite.
Since Monday, players have been instructed to only talk about the classic from tomorrow onwards, albeit with extreme caution, to avoid statements that could serve as motivation for the black and whites.
On Friday, a group of fans intend to go to Teresópolis for a meeting with the players and demand the state title at all costs, especially after the last two defeats to Botafogo.
Rubro-negros don't want to go to Mexico
Rio - Flamengo faces Coronel Bolognesi today at 19:30 pm at Maracanã. Their first objective is to win; their second is to avoid facing a Mexican team in the round of 4, which begins on Wednesday, right between the two matches of the State Championship final. The trip would be exhausting and would disrupt their plans for the second leg against Botafogo on May XNUMXth.
But the players and coaching staff were confused yesterday, unsure of the possible matchups in the next phase. Leading Group 4 with 10 points, Flamengo could be the best team in the first phase if they beat Bolognesi by a margin of five or more goals. But if their goal is to avoid a match with América of Mexico, which is currently on the verge of the top-placed teams, Flamengo can do nothing. To escape América, they need to hope that Audax-CHI defeats the eliminated Sportivo Luqueño in Paraguay and that São Paulo and Nacional win at Morumbi Stadium. However, those matches start at 21:50 p.m.
"We'll see what happens, so we can put together our flight plan. We have to know what result interests us. We have to know whether we'll go in with the fury to score five goals or not," Joel declared, as if his team could devise a strategy. Marcinho, the team's top scorer in the Libertadores with three goals, says that if he gets the chance, he wants to find the back of the net against Bolognesi as much as possible.
Íbson, with pain in his left thigh, and Renato Augusto, with edema in his right leg, will be replaced by Jaílton and Marcinho, respectively. Juan, meanwhile, risks missing the second leg of the State Championship final. He will be tried on the 30th.
To have Abel, Fla hopes for Inter's elimination
Rio - With an eye on Internacional coach Abel Braga, Flamengo is hoping for a stumble by the Rio Grande do Sul team in the Copa do Brasil to facilitate a possible negotiation with the coach. Flamengo's current manager, Joel Santana, will head to South Africa to coach the local team, replacing Carlos Alberto Parreira.
Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, is expected to announce Joel Santana's replacement only on May 5th, the date the coach leaves for South Africa. "We won't discuss this matter until then. I'll be the one to take care of it," the director declared.
Abel Braga is currently the favorite name at Gávea. He worked at the club in 2005, is a Rio native, has friends at the club, and has Libertadores experience (he won the 2006 Copa Libertadores with Inter). Geninho and Ney Franco are other options.

Flamengo faces Bolognesi with an eye on the group's leadership\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Already mathematically qualified, but still thinking about a better positioning for the second phase of the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo returns to the field this Wednesday, when it faces Coronel Bolognesi, at 19:30 pm (Brasília time), at Maracanã, in a game valid for the last round of Group 4 of the competition.\ With ten points, Rubro-Negro will guarantee the first position in its group in case of victory, since it cannot be overtaken by Nacional, which has nine points and will face Cienciano at the same time.\
Despite the rivalry with Botafogo, Flamengo's players insist that the Campeonato Carioca final will only be discussed at the club after Wednesday's match. "We're only thinking about Bolognesi. It's going to be an important game, as it's for first place in our group," commented Flamengo defender and captain Fábio Luciano.
Midfielder Renato Augusto will miss this match with a muscle injury and will continue intensive treatment to ensure he's fully fit on Sunday. He'll be replaced by Marcinho, who gets another chance to play alongside Souza.
Another Flamengo player expected to be missing is midfielder Ibson, who was also injured last Monday. Therefore, coach Joel Santana will choose between Jaílton and Jônatas to form the Flamengo midfield.
Meanwhile, Coronel Bolognesi, bottom of the group with just two points, is dreaming of a victory. But to do so, the team will have to break a goal drought, as the Peruvians haven't found the net once in the competition.
For Parreira, Joel will be his replacement in South Africa
Johannesburg (RJ) - Although South African officials have denied the hiring of Joel Santana, former South African national team coach Carlos Alberto Parreira confirmed on Tuesday that Flamengo's current manager will indeed be his replacement. "I think it will be Joel. He was nominated, has already spoken with the federation and has shown interest in making a deal. I think he'll come," said the four-time champion, who resigned from his position citing personal issues.
Flamengo's vice president of football, Kleber Leite, announced on Monday that Joel Santana will remain with Flamengo until the final match of the Campeonato Carioca final, when he is expected to leave the club to take his place on the African national team. However, the director of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Raymond Hack, denied the Flamengo official's decision and stated that no agreement has yet been reached with Joel.
Surprised by the Bafana Bafana director's statement, Parreira claims that the Flamengo coach's name had already been confirmed to him by the Safa directors on Monday. "Yesterday (Monday), I had a meeting with them in the afternoon and that was it. After that, I didn't speak to the directors anymore," said the four-time champion, who stated that the idea was to announce Joel after the Campeonato Carioca, so as not to upset Flamengo.
Although he's packing his bags to return to Brazil, Parreira denied the possibility of swapping places with Joel and taking over Flamengo. "There's no way. It doesn't make sense for me to leave here to be with my family and then travel with a club every week," the coach stated.
"I might even end up signing with a team in the future; in football, you never know. But taking on a team mid-season is tricky. My best work has always been with clubs I've worked with since preseason," concluded Carlos Alberto Parreira.
Márcio does not believe in Joel staying\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - One day after announcing he would leave Flamengo for the South African national team, coach Joel Santana was surprised by an interview with a South African official who denied any agreement had been reached with the coach. Flamengo president Márcio Braga, however, preferred not to get too involved in the controversy, but he wasn't very excited about Joel's chances of staying at Gávea after the Campeonato Carioca final. "It would be great if Joel could stay at Flamengo, but I can only speak to what he told me, and today (Tuesday) Joel confirmed he's leaving," the president told Rádio Brasil. "This South Africa issue hasn't reached us officially. We really wanted Joel to stay, but Flamengo won't end if he has to leave. But of course, if he could stay, all the better," he added.
Márcio Braga assures that the squad won't be affected by Joel Santana's unexpected departure and asserts that the team's focus is on the Campeonato Carioca final. According to the president, only Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, will handle matters related to the new Flamengo manager.
"Kléber is already in charge of finding a new coach, but we won't talk about that until May 4th, as the coaches are involved in decisions and here too the subject is the Carioca final, we're focused on winning the second title," the director assured.
Despite delegating to Kléber Leite the task of choosing a new coach for Flamengo, Márcio Braga did not hide the fact that his favorite is Abel Braga, current coach of Internacional who won the Rio de Janeiro championship with the Rubro-Negro in 2004.
"It's undeniable. Abel's time at Flamengo was very successful. But I don't think we should make this speculation, as it can only harm Abel, who is involved in a decision," Braga stated.
Flamengo's president also took the opportunity to taunt Botafogo, their opponent in the Carioca final. "I liked Botafogo because they're the favorites. And I like beating Botafogo because we win and they cry," the Flamengo president quipped, referring to the club's complaints after the last Guanabara Cup final.

Only Flamengo takes Fluminense off the top of the Libertadores
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Even with Groups 4 and 7 of the Copa Libertadores da América still to be determined, one thing is certain: only Flamengo can take the "leadership" from Fluminense in this first phase of the South American competition. But to do so, Flamengo needs to thrash Coronel Bolognesi-PER, this Wednesday at 19:30 pm, at Maracanã.
Reuters
Fluminense fans can celebrate the best campaign in the Copa Libertadores
Currently, with 13 points, Fluminense has a goal difference of eight, having scored 11 throughout the competition. Flamengo, with ten, has a goal difference of three and seven goals for.
Therefore, Rubro-Negro will only surpass Tricolor with a victory by five or more goals.
Finishing the first stage of the Libertadores with the best record, Fluminense has the advantage of always playing the second leg at home. At this point, Fluminense would face São Paulo in the round of 16.
However, that's set to change. This Wednesday, the São Paulo club hosts Atlético Nacional at 21:50 PM at Morumbi Stadium. Both teams currently have eight points, but the Colombians have the advantage on goal difference: 4-1.
In the same group, Audax Italiano, with seven points, also plays this Wednesday. The Chileans, away from home, face Sportivo Luqueño of Paraguay.
Ibson could miss Fla against Coronel Bolognesi-PER
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Having recovered from a left thigh injury, Jônatas has been cleared to return to the Flamengo squad. However, midfielder Ibson may miss Wednesday's match against Coronel Bolognesi-PER at the Maracanã stadium, in the final round of Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores.
According to the red-black doctor Walter Martins, the player is still undergoing treatment for a problem in his left thigh and is at risk of being rested.
The supporter did not participate in the training session held on Tuesday morning, at Granja Comary, in Teresópolis, as he remained at the hotel undergoing intensive treatment.
While Ibson is racing against time, midfielder Renato Augusto is a certain out for the match against the Peruvians. With severe discomfort in his right leg, he will be rested for the State Championship final against Botafogo on Sunday at Maracanã.
Márcio Braga confirms Joel's departure and admits interest in Abel
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Like Flamengo's vice president of football, Kleber Leite, Flamengo president Márcio Braga also confirmed the departure of coach Joel Santana to join the South African national team. On Tuesday morning, the director of the South African Football Confederation, Raymond Hack, stated that nothing had been agreed with the coach of the Gávea club.
Flamengo's president admitted that Abel Braga would be a good name for the team
"He's really leaving. We didn't want this. But it's inevitable. He told me and Kleber (Leite) yesterday that he had arranged everything on Sunday," explained Márcio Braga, in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
The director also noted that he will only discuss the new coach starting May 5th, when Joel will officially be released from Flamengo. However, he didn't deny that Abel Braga is a name he really likes.
"It's undeniable that I like Abel. I've already said that. I really like him. But I can't speculate right now because he's in the Campeonato Gaúcho final and coaches a big club, Internacional. That would only hinder him. We'll only talk about coaching other clubs after the state championships are over," he emphasized.
The names of Geninho, coach of Atlético-MG, Muricy Ramalho, of São Paulo and Paulo Autuori are also heavily speculated in Gávea.
Flamengo's Juan will be tried on April 30th
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
The Rio de Janeiro Sports Court (STJ-RJ) has scheduled the trial of Flamengo left-back Juan for April 30th. The player will have to answer for his strong statements regarding referee Péricles Bassols Cortez's actions in the Flamengo's 3-0 loss to Botafogo on April 13th in the semifinals of the Taça Rio, the second round of the State Championship.
Juan was charged under Article 251 (Complaining, through gestures or words, against refereeing decisions or disrespecting the referee and his assistants) of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD). Punishment for this type of offense ranges from a one- to four-game suspension. As a result, the number 6 could miss the second leg of the State Championship final, on May 4th, against Botafogo.
"Juan said too much, there was no way this could go unnoticed and that's why he was reported. The Prosecutor's Office understands that the athlete must be convicted under the article's penalties," TJD-RJ prosecutor André Luiz Valentin told the website Justiça Desportiva last week.
Outraged by the referee's performance, the full-back let rip as he left the field. Hot-headed and stunned by the negative result, he claimed that Péricles Bassols had "won the match" for the black and whites.
According to Juan, the referee applied different weights to similar situations, awarding excessive fouls near Flamengo's penalty area and failing to do so on the black and white field. The number six also complained about Toró's penalty on Jorge Henrique, which led to Glorioso's third goal.
South African press views Joel's possible arrival with suspicion
From EFE\ In Johannesburg (South Africa)\
The likely hiring of current Flamengo coach Joel Santana to manage the South African national football team was not well received by the South African press.
Joel "was fired four times between 2003 and 2004 and never coached a national team," says the newspaper "The Star", the most important in Johannesburg.
For the publication, the agreement with Joel only shows that the South African Football Association (Safa) "is desperate" to urgently replace Carlos Alberto Parreira, who confirmed his departure last Monday citing family problems.
The Johannesburg newspaper "The Citizen" stated that "if Joel Santana's name is mentioned in the international football world, it will likely be said that he is not even a blip on the radar of international coaches."
Joel "had spells in Saudi Arabia and Japan, without much success, but won some titles in Brazil," the newspaper states.
Just as with Parreira, Joel Santana's likely salary is already causing controversy in South Africa. According to local press, Parreira earned around US$250 per month, more than the current president, Thabo Mbeki, earns in an entire year.
"Santana's salary won't be as high as Parreira's, but it will be pretty close," the South African newspaper reported.
SAFA has not yet confirmed Joel Santana's trip to South Africa. "I can neither confirm nor deny, but we will make an official announcement on May 4th," said the organization's director, Raymond Hack, yesterday.
Geninho confirms Flamengo's approach, but says he won't leave Atlético
From UOL Esporte\ In Belo Horizonte\
Coach Geninho revealed he was pleased to have his name considered as an option to replace Joel Santana, who is leaving Flamengo to take over the South African national team. The coach confirmed in an interview early Tuesday evening that Atlético-MG had announced earlier that it had received an approach from the Rio de Janeiro club.
Leaf Image
Coach Geninho confirms Flamengo's approach, but says he will stay at Atlético-MG. "I'm pleased because my name is remembered, I'm pleased to be an option in such a big team as Flamengo, which is in the Libertadores and doing well, because it proves that something you do in your profession is recognized not only in the place where you work, but also outside," he highlighted.
Geninho recalled that this wasn't the first time Flamengo had expressed interest in signing him. According to him, before signing Joel Santana, during last year's Brazilian Championship, he received an official invitation. "So, it's not news to the press, especially the Rio de Janeiro press, that they're interested in me for the Flamengo coaching position," he emphasized.
The Atlético coach made a point of saying that this time, there wasn't an official offer, but rather an inquiry into his contractual situation. "I said I'm not interested in leaving Galo. I'm fine, I'm just starting a job now, which is starting to bear fruit. Unless, for one reason or another, the board fires me or the Atlético fans don't accept me, then I might leave, but not from my side," he said.
According to Geninho, this is why he didn't consider the possibility of a departure and, consequently, negotiations. The Atlético coach considered Flamengo's approach to be a natural one, as they are looking for a replacement for Joel Santana, who will manage the South African national team.
"I consider it normal, because the coach who will participate in two finals received an offer he couldn't refuse to coach a team that had already qualified for the World Cup. With Parreira's departure, he recommended Joel, who said the amounts were absurd. He'll earn in three years what he hadn't earned in 30 years, and it's only natural that the team would look for other coaches. I'm not the only name; I've heard of Abel and others as well," he emphasized.
When asked if Flamengo's approach could in any way harm Atlético's preparation or shake the players' confidence, Geninho was blunt. "It won't hurt anything because they know the coach isn't leaving," he stated.
With an eye on Bota, Fla, with doubts, faces Coronel Bolognesi-PER
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo has a tough task ahead of them this Wednesday at 19:30 p.m. at the Maracanã stadium. Not so much because of the match against a limited Coronel Bolognesi-PER in the final round of Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores. The real challenge, however, will be focusing solely on this game and forgetting about next Sunday's clash against Botafogo, the first leg of the State Championship final.
Despite already qualifying for the round of 10 of the continental competition with XNUMX points, a win is crucial for the Red-Blacks. This would place them among the best teams in the entire group stage of the tournament. What's more, if they win by five goals, they have a good chance of finishing this stage with the best record, which would guarantee them the advantage of deciding the knockout stage at home. Bolognesi, with just two points, is already eliminated.
"That can't happen. We'll only think about the final later. Here with us, there's no such thing as the game not counting, of it being a friendly. We're going in to win," said right-back Leonardo Moura.
Coach Joel Santana, however, doesn't see the situation that way. He knows the victory is important, but the much-talked-about first place overall isn't so important. After all, the opponent could be one of the toughest and could force the team on a long and, consequently, exhausting road trip.
"We want to secure first, second, or third place overall. But we have to evaluate each advantage during the game. After all, we want to avoid a long trip or a very strong opponent. We have this advantage of being able to choose. Let's see if it's worth going in with this fury of scoring five goals," the manager assessed.
On the field, the coach, ready to take over the South African national team, has two problems. Renato Augusto, with a right thigh injury, has been ruled out by the medical department. Marcinho is expected to inherit the position.
Midfielder Ibson, with a similar problem in his left thigh, is practically out of the game. This means Jaílton could start. Jônatas, already back in action, is an outside player.
The Peruvians are in a "sniper" situation. Already eliminated, the team travels to Rio de Janeiro for a high-profile friendly. According to striker Miguel Mosto, however, the match against Flamengo means a lot, as it would be a chance to bid a dignified farewell to the Libertadores.

Flamengo prevails at home, defeats Corrientes and forces another match
On an inspired day for point guard Marcelinho Machado, Flamengo forced Game 98 of the South American League final. This Tuesday, in a not-so-crowded but very noisy Maracanãzinho (RJ) gymnasium, the home team defeated Regatas Corrientes 79-2, leaving the series at 1-17. The next match between the teams will be this Wednesday at XNUMX p.m., again at Maracanãzinho.
Flamengo needs a win to tie the series and decide the title in Corrientes, Argentina. The Argentines' two victories were at home. In the opening game, Flamengo was defeated, caused a brawl on the court, and saw its most experienced player sent off. In the following match, the team showed signs of a 1-1 series draw, but conceded the victory to their opponent.
"The team came out fighting hard, knowing it was a life-or-death game. And the result couldn't have been any different; it was our best game," said the game's top scorer, Marcelinho Machado, who had 44 points and six assists.

Fla overwhelming in the first quarter
Flamengo started the match better. Marcelinho Machado, who missed the second game of the series after being sent off in the opener, scored the home team's first seven points. Sensing their opponent's momentum, Regatas Corrientes called a timeout with the score still 19-9, with a little over six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Upon returning to the court, the Rubro-Negro continued their strong performance, particularly from outside the paint. With three three-pointers, the Rio de Janeiro team took a 28-11 lead.
The team had been playing well even in defeat. Today, they're showcasing a compact defense and a collective attack. The team is young, but it's growing fast. Paulo Chupeta, Flamengo coach.
Marcelinho continued to be Flamengo's bellwether. In the few minutes he was distracted on the court, Regatas Corrientes cut the lead to exactly ten points, making it 28-18. In the final seconds of the first quarter, the point guard found his feet and converted another three-pointer. He then grabbed a steal to close the half at 33-18.
Marcelinho scores more than the rival team
In the second quarter, Flamengo continued to dominate the field. Just as in the previous quarter, Marcelinho started by hitting two three-pointers. With six minutes remaining, the score was 39-23 for the home team. At the same time, the point guard had 24 points in the game, one more than the entire Argentine team. The final minutes were very close, with numerous fouls between the teams. But the advantage remained in Flamengo's favor. Marcelinho scored seven points from free throws alone, closing the second quarter at 7-58.
The team came out swinging, knowing it was a life-or-death game. And the result couldn't have been any different; it was our best game. Marcelinho Machado, Flamengo's point guard.
In the third quarter, the Rubro-Negro's experience, guided by coach Paulo Chupeta, was crucial. The Rio de Janeiro team managed its advantage, holding onto possession. The fourth quarter ended 66-58. In the final quarter, Flamengo continued to rally behind the roars of the fans, opening up a points lead, and winning the match 98-79, forcing a fourth game of the South American League finals.
"The team was already playing well even in defeats. Today, they're presenting a compact defense and a collective attack. The team is young, but it's growing quickly," says Flamengo coach Paulo Chupeta.
For Europeans, Joel is the 'king of the drawing board'
The international press reports on South Africa's hiring of the coach to replace Parreira.
Joel and his clipboard: the habit of taking notes for players
Joel Santana's move to South Africa as Carlos Alberto Parreira's replacement took the European press by surprise, as names like Sven-Goran Eriksson and even Luiz Felipe Scolari were being considered by foreign newspapers. However, the Flamengo coach received praise.
For the website "Soccernet," which specializes in English football, Joel is the "king of the clipboard," referring to the coach's habit of taking notes during the first half. "Joel, 59, has a typical Brazilian coaching career," the website's text states, noting Joel's state titles and limited international experience. "He had brief stints with clubs in Japan and the Middle East," it adds.
Other European websites recall the last Brazilian Championship, when Joel led Flamengo from the relegation zone to qualifying for the Copa Libertadores. Like "The Earth Times," which even calls the coach a "miracle worker" because of Flamengo's run.
Last Monday, Joel Santana and Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, announced that the coach will replace Parreira in South Africa. On Tuesday, a South African official denied the report, but Parreira, in an interview with GLOBOESPORTE.COM, confirmed that Joel has reached an agreement to manage the host team for the next World Cup.

President Marcio Braga and Joel Santana talk at Granja Comary
A Flamengo side with its identity in disarray faces Coronel Bolognesi this Wednesday night at 19:30 p.m. (Brasília time) at the Maracanã stadium. Their place in the round of XNUMX of the Copa Libertadores has been assured since the last round. Perhaps because of this—and the fear of a long trip in the next round—the red-and-black club enters the field without a clear objective.
GLOBOESPORTE.COM will be streaming live from 19:15 p.m. on SporTV.
Leading Group 4 with ten points, Flamengo could achieve its best campaign of the initial phase if it thrashes the eliminated Peruvians (bottom of the group with two points) by five or more goals. But who said such a goal is attractive?
The coaching staff has planned to avoid a trip to Mexico to face América. The Aztec team is on par with the clubs with the best records. That's why Flamengo wants to win. Honestly, a big win doesn't excite them. If they lose or draw, Nacional-URU, who face Cienciano, could steal the top spot from the Rio de Janeiro team.
"First, I want to secure the top spot in my group. If it's worthwhile to try to be the best overall, we'll go for it. Otherwise, we'll manipulate whatever's best," says coach Joel Santana.
Where is the pivot table?
But Flamengo can't manipulate something it can't control. Coach Joel Santana, speaking to the press, demonstrated a lack of knowledge about the group stage. He didn't know, for example, that Audax-CHI is one of Flamengo's potential opponents.
"Who are they going to face? Oh, Luqueño. Does that one have a chance? If not, of course Audax will win," he says, laughing.
The coach assures that there are those who are "in the know" about the opponent's possibilities. If so, he'll know that a rout or a simple victory doesn't give the Red-Blacks the "right" to choose their opponent. Everything will depend on the results of Group 7, which includes São Paulo, Nacional-COL, Audax, and Sportivo Luqueño.
Joel Santana during Flamengo training
Flamengo's questions aren't limited to its Libertadores rival. The club's time in Teresópolis was hectic. After all, Joel Santana announced his departure from Flamengo after the Campeonato Carioca final on May 4th. He will replace Carlos Alberto Parreira as coach of the South African national team.
In other words, the current coach - who still has no successor decided - will not be at Gávea for the second leg of the Libertadores round of 16.
- But I want to leave Flamengo in pole position - he guarantees.
Despite this Wednesday's match, the Red-Blacks' attention is divided with the State Championship final. Ibson, for example, would play if it were a decisive match. But as he's experiencing pain in his left thigh, he'll be replaced by Jaílton. Another absence will be Renato Augusto, who is recovering from a knee injury. Marcinho returns to the starting lineup.
Eliminated, Coronel Bolognesi has two statistics to defend this Wednesday. Despite not having beaten any other team, the team from Tacna, in the Peruvian desert, has conceded only three goals in five games. This performance places them as the best defensive system in the Libertadores, alongside Fluminense.
On the other hand, the team led by Juan Reynoso is the only one among the 32 participants that has not yet scored a goal.
