Family recovery
In pain, Renato Augusto eats ice cream and spends the night with his father in the hospital
Gian Amato
Since his first kicks and falls at Flamengo's youth academy, Luiz Carlos Augusto has been helping his son. Monday was no different. After undergoing facial surgery, Renato Augusto opened his eyes and saw hope in his father's smile. Even with his face swollen and sore, the Flamengo player must have reminisced about his childhood while eating ice cream, the only food allowed for those who received three titanium plates and 11 screws during their cheekbone repair. That night, the pain intensified, and he needed medication to help him sleep. The nightmare only ended yesterday morning with the news that his number 10 jersey would be retired until his return. Emotionally, he revealed to his father:
- I want to return to playing for Flamengo as soon as possible.
Alongside his wife, Salete, Luiz Carlos Augusto spent the night at Pasteur Hospital in Méier. Together in the same room, the family felt even closer and more at peace upon learning that Renato Augusto will be discharged today, around noon. The player's recovery could take about 60 days.
"The surgery was a success and he'll be discharged tomorrow (today). We've been living in his room, and I can say that everything is normal," said Luiz Carlos Augusto. "He speaks very little and can only eat ice cream in these first few days."
Boavista defender Hélton's unintentional header was a direct blow to Renato Augusto's hopes of starting the season without major problems. The pain from last year's injuries, which sidelined him for a few matches, paled in comparison to what he felt early yesterday morning.
"When the pain started, they immediately called Dr. Augusto César Lima (who operated on Renato). He prescribed medication to help him sleep. And I fell asleep next to him," said Luiz Carlos Augusto.
When contacted in the middle of the night, Augusto César Lima prescribed a stronger dose of painkiller, which alleviated his son's pain and his father's worries:
- The pain is normal, but I didn't need to prescribe tranquilizers. Now, we just have to wait for recovery.
Renato Augusto will have to rest until the surgery site has completely subsided. If recovery occurs sooner than expected, the doctor will assess whether the player will need to wear a face shield, which will not prevent him from heading the ball without fear.
"He will be watched over by his father and mother. After he's discharged, his recovery location will be kept confidential to protect his image and health," said Luiz Carlos Augusto. "He's committed. He received a visit from the club's president, Márcio Braga, and his friends are always nearby..."
And also far away. In Gávea, full-back Leonardo Moura lamented his friend's absence and hoped for his recovery.
"I'm sad to lose Renato. We're always so attached to each other, and I hope he comes back soon," he said.
The attacking spot for tomorrow's match against Cardoso Moreira at Maracanã is between Marcinho and Obina. Both were tested yesterday by Joel Santana in the training session, which ended 1-1, with goals from Ibson and Éder. The coach replaced Cristian with Jônatas, who was registered yesterday. Diego Tardelli and Bruno are not yet registered. Tickets are on sale at Gávea, General Severiano, Caio Martins, Laranjeiras, Engenhão, and at Maracanã ticket office 8. Green and yellow stands cost R$30, and white stands cost R$40.
Renato Augusto will be joining the crowd alongside his father. But on TV. On February 8th, the player will turn 20, and he's already made a request that's no secret to anyone. He just hopes it's granted before the time comes.
Libertadores will have matches at altitude
Despite pressure from Flamengo to avoid Libertadores games in cities above 2.750 meters (2.850 feet), a FIFA-mandated limit, CONMEBOL confirmed the schedule yesterday, maintaining the matches at that altitude. Fluminense is already certain to travel to Quito (20 meters) to face LDU on February XNUMX.
Flamengo, which even sought President Lula's support and requested FIFA's action, still depends on the match between Cienciano and Wanders - the former's qualification will take the team to the 3.300m in Cuzco, Peru, on April 9th. Santos will face the most grueling challenge, the 4.000m, on March 19th, against Bolivia's San Jose, in Oruru. Due to the support it received from all its affiliates, CONMEBOL will attempt to overturn FIFA's ban on the qualifiers.

Ah, those reinforcements...
In theory, Fluminense and Flamengo were the clubs that made the best signings at the beginning of the year, and I'm referring to all of Brazil, not just Rio. Put that way, it seems like an extraordinary feat, but it's not really, because the days when our clubs could boast of signing major reinforcements, great players, and superstars are long gone.
Today, our domestic market is very modest, not to say humble.
In this scenario, the names of Jônatas, Kléberson, and Rodrigo, some of Flamengo's new signings, gain importance, as do Leandro Amaral, Washington, and Dodô (these, let's not even mention them), some of Fluminense's new signings. These are signings without quotation marks.
The majority, however, the vast majority, are made up of "reinforcements" in quotation marks, announced with great fanfare by the hype media, with the intention of deceiving naive fans and selling more newspapers.
Even so, neither Flamengo nor Fluminense escaped their own blunders. Flamengo, it seems, can field a team entirely of defensive midfielders, whether by coincidence or simply because Joel Santana likes it. Meanwhile, Fluminense has dedicated itself to recruiting forwards. On the other hand, it's unclear why or why they brought in Gustavo Nery. Why Gustavo Nery, huh?
And why, specifically, Diego Tardelli, in the case of Flamengo? What has Diego Tardelli done in his life and career to reinforce Flamengo, precisely, precisely, precisely in the position where the team needs it most: a second striker?
At last Monday's roundtable on ESPN Brasil, I asked my São Paulo teammates, experts in Tardelli, what they thought of the player. None of them offered their opinion. Diego Tardelli is, for them—and imagine, for me—a huge question mark.
Even so, in terms of sheer nonsense, it's incomparable to what Vasco has been and is doing, for example. First Beto, then Edmundo. Honestly: what can a board expect that, at this point in the game, hires our old friend Beto?
Do you think that lack of criteria and judgment in signings is exclusive to Rio de Janeiro soccer? No, it isn't. In this regard, Professor Vanderlei Luxemburgo didn't admit to falling behind, as he never does, and made a point of outdoing all other clubs and coaches. Who did he hire? Who? Who?
None other than Léo Lima. What truly Hitchcockian suspense the teacher of teachers created: what will Léo Lima do at Palmeiras?
And in the super-organized São Paulo of the super-discreet Muricy Ramalho, what will our equally well-known Carlos Alberto, responsible for the latest despair of the Fluminense fans, do? What will he do?
Ah, these clubs of ours and their wonderful reinforcements, with or without quotation marks.

Renato Augusto may be discharged today
After undergoing surgery, Renato Augusto is eager to return home.
Midfielder Renato Augusto, who underwent facial bone reconstruction surgery last Monday, is expected to be discharged today from Pasteur Hospital in Méier. The player received three titanium plates and 11 screws and is expected to be able to exercise again in ten days.
Touched by the outpouring of affection he's received in recent days, Renato, through his advisor, expressed his gratitude for the support. Yesterday, he received a visit from Flamengo president Marcio Braga.
"I'm grateful for the outpouring of affection I've received from the fans, the board, the press, and my friends at Flamengo. Some players and members of the coaching staff called my mother to offer their support. These are the gestures that give me the strength to overcome this difficult time. Now I just want to rest and begin rehabilitation to return to playing as soon as possible.
Keep praying for me and I'll be back soon," asked Renato Augusto.
Early yesterday afternoon, doctor Augusto César Lima, who was responsible for the player's surgery, said the player had slept well. His main concern now is getting home.
"I haven't spoken to Renato yet, but I spoke to José Luiz Runco (Flamengo's doctor) and he told me that everything is fine with the player," explained doctor Augusto César Lima.
To pay tribute to the supporter, the vice-president of football, Kleber Leite, who is on vacation in Punta del Lesta, Uruguay, has already announced that the number 10 shirt will be retired until Renato Augusto's return, which should happen at the beginning of March, in the first round of the Taça Rio, against Resende.
Side demands call-up
One of Flamengo's standout performers in the 2-0 win over Boavista in the opening round of this year's Carioca Championship, right-back Leonardo Moura was very confident about being called up to the Brazilian national team. However, coach Dunga chose to ignore the player's strong performances again and called up "foreigners" Maicon (Inter Milan) and Rafinha (Schalk 04).
Moments before the Brazilian Football Confederation released the list of players who will face Ireland on the 6th in Dublin, the full-back said he will continue working hard to continue standing out to wear the Yellow Shirt in the near future.
"I had a great 2007, I played very well and that's why I'm sure that one day my long-awaited call-up will come," said Léo Moura, who, in addition to being named the best right-back in last year's Brazilian Championship, played a key role in the victory of the championship's all-star team against the Brazilian Olympic Team, led by coach Dunga. The full-back believes that the team will be able to play better football tomorrow than it did against Boavista.
Marcinho and Jônatas should play
With Renato Augusto out for the next 45 days, coach Joel Santana appears to have already decided on his replacement, at least for the match against Cardoso Moreira. Midfielder Marcinho trained with the starting eleven yesterday, but as the coach hasn't given interviews in recent days, the midfielder hasn't yet been confirmed as a starter.
Another player expected to start is defensive midfielder Jônatas, who already has a valid contract and is available to Joel. He started yesterday's training session in place of Cristian and then, with Obina's entry into the starting lineup, ended up being moved to the third center-back position, a role previously held by Jaílton.
The starters won the first half 1-0, with a goal from Souza. With the legendary striker replacing Jaílton, the team's performance declined and suffered a draw, with a beautiful goal from striker Éder, following a play by Diego Tardelli, who was playing his first training session for Flamengo. Right-back Leonardo Moura praised the team's two potential new starters.
"Jônatas has a good pass and knows how to get forward well. We've played together before and I know his quality. The ball comes to him easily. We just can't be too exposed. As the games continue, we'll improve. Marcinho, on the other hand, has different characteristics than Renato Augusto. He's a player who carries the ball more and opens up space in the opposing defense," explained the full-back.

Fla manages to register Jônatas and Léo Medeiros and hopes to define Bruno and Tardelli's situations today

Goalkeeper Bruno could have his contract registered today with the CBF and reinforce Flamengo
Tuesday couldn't have been better for Flamengo off the field. The CBF's Daily Newsletter confirmed the legalization of Jônatas and Léo Medeiros' contracts. But the good news doesn't stop there. Football director Eduardo Manhães is confident that goalkeeper Bruno and forward Diego Tardelli's contracts will be finalized today. Thus, both can be available to coach Joel Santana tomorrow, when the team faces Cardoso Moreira at 19:30 PM at Maracanã.
"We have a promise that Bruno's situation will be resolved tomorrow (today). The investment fund has already located the payment of the first installment, but has not yet sent the release to the CBF," said Manhães, before explaining the situation of striker Diego Tardelli: "Negotiations are well advanced and it is possible that he will be legally fit to play on Thursday. But we still need to see how the athlete is physically," he added.
The cases of striker Éder and Paraguayan defensive midfielder Gavilán remain uncertain. The former's contract is still tied up with the São Paulo State Federation, as he secured his release from Guarani through the courts. As for the foreigner, lawyer Michel Assef Filho is waiting for the player to land in Rio to expedite the registration of his contract.
"He (Gavilán) should arrive in Brazil today (yesterday). I'm just waiting for the work visa to speed up his registration with the CBF. In all cases, Flamengo has already done everything it needed to, now it no longer depends on us," explained Michel Assef Filho.
Despite the possibility of being registered this week, Gavilán will have to wait to make his debut for Flamengo. Rubens Aprobatto, president of the Superior Court of Sports Justice, has already dismissed eight similar cases, which sought a reduction in his sentence and converted the remaining time into basic food baskets. And since the attack by the defensive midfielder on Palmeiras' Chilean Valdívia was considered serious, he will likely only be fit to play on February 15th.

Flamengo: Commotion for Renato Augusto
Teammates are shocked by the bruises on the star's face. Márcio Braga says that "he looks like a monster."
Rodrigo Lima
Rio - The bruising and swelling on Renato Augusto's face, after he underwent surgery after a collision with defender Hélton in Sunday's 2-0 victory over Boavista, moved teammates and officials. In addition to temporarily retiring the player's number 10 jersey, president Márcio Braga and his friends were shocked by the condition of Renato Augusto's face, which he is having difficulty even speaking.
The star sent a message through his press office thanking everyone for their support: "I'm very grateful for the outpouring of affection I've received from the fans, the board, and my friends at Flamengo. Some players and members of the coaching staff called to offer their support. It's these gestures that give me the strength to overcome this difficult time. The surgery was successful, and now I'm just thinking about resting and starting rehabilitation to get back to playing as soon as possible."
Doctor Augusto César Lima, who operated on the player, allowed visitors, but Renato Augusto's parents were restricting visitors yesterday in order to protect their son.
The person who broke through the 'blockade' at Pasteur Hospital in Méier, where the player underwent surgery, was the club's president. Márcio Braga was frightened by what he saw. "He looks like a monster. It's really scary, because his face is quite swollen. He's even having trouble speaking because he has trouble moving his jaw," said Márcio Braga upon leaving the hospital.
The manager, however, revealed that the player, who is expected to be discharged today around noon, is optimistic about his recovery, which is expected to take more than 12 days. "He can't stand being in the hospital any longer. He's desperate to get out of here. He said he'll be back training soon and that he'll be amazing," the manager stated.
Marcinho and Jônatas are the new additions to the starting lineup
Rio - Coach Joel Santana held a collective training session at Gávea on Tuesday morning and made two changes to the starting lineup. Midfielder Marcinho took the place of Renato Augusto, who underwent surgery after suffering a depressed facial bone following a blow to the head in the match against Boavista.
The other change is the addition of Jônatas to the team in place of Cristian. Jônatas's situation was regularized this Monday, as Espanyol sent the missing documentation to Flamengo.
Joel also tried another experiment. He took off Jaílton and brought on Obina, which made the tactical scheme quite attacking, but the idea should only be an option for the match against Cardoso Moreira, this Thursday, at Maracanã.
Léo Moura was pleased with Marcinho's arrival: "Marcinho has already shown he has quality, he changed the game against Boavista as soon as he came on. We're sad to lose Renato Augusto, but we'll hope he comes back soon."
Flamengo is also trying to regularize the status of Bruno, Diego Tardelli, and Léo Medeiros. Midfielder Gavilán went to Paraguay to get his visa, but won't return until Wednesday. Renato Augusto's number 10 jersey won't be worn by any player in the next match.
TARDELLI
Striker Diego Tardelli trained once again with the reserves. However, the player already dreams, like Souza, of scoring a goal on Sunday against Duque de Caxias and celebrating with his own dance. "Souza has his own dance. But mine is already in my head," Tardelli revealed.
Fans help Flamengo become a major attraction in North America
Canada - Flamengo was featured in a two-page feature in the January issue of Canadian magazine Soccer, featuring fellow Brazilian Kakà (sic). Interestingly, this time, the Rio de Janeiro team didn't make headlines in Canada or the United States because of its performance on the field. The subject of the article "Flamengo, the people's club" is its fans.
The feat of the red-blacks in the last Brazilian Championship, maintaining an average of 39.221 paying spectators per team match and breaking the attendance record for a single game (82.044 against Atlético Paranaense) caught the attention of editor Eddie Kehoue: "The passion shown at Maracanã is unique in the world. We don't even see that in Italy", he told Blog do Boleiro.
The text tells the club's history, its early achievements, and how a team with few resources captured the passion of Rio de Janeiro's poorest classes. In the report, Kehoue recalls the "Afro-Brazilian stars" who wore the Flamengo jersey: Domingos da Guia, Leônidas da Silva, and Zizinho.
Zico is cited as the leader of the generation of athletes who "took Santos from being the most famous Brazilian club in the world." "The success of Zico and his teammates catapulted Flamengo to the status of the team that embodies Brazilian football," the editor states.
The reason Flamengo is so prominent is the presence of its fans at the stadium in late 2007: "The players and fans celebrate each match as if it were one." The magazine also suggests that readers find the time and money to participate in the Maracanã "celebration of a team with 40 million fans across the country."
This time, the crowd not only pushed the team into the 2008 Libertadores, but also caught the attention of a country where football has become - in the last ten years - the sport with the largest number of players.

Board 'retires' number 10 shirt and Renato Augusto thanks Gazeta Press
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - One of Flamengo's biggest revelations in recent years, midfielder Renato Augusto received a tribute from the Flamengo board after suffering a facial injury and undergoing surgery that will keep him out of action for more than a month. No other player will wear the number ten jersey while Renato is recovering. And this Tuesday, through his press office, the midfielder released a statement expressing his joy at the initiative of Flamengo's directors.
"I was surprised, but very honored, by the board's decision to not wear the number 10 jersey while I recover. I can't thank them enough for this. Keep praying for me, and I'll be back soon," he said.
Renato Augusto was also pleased with the support he received from his teammates and Flamengo's coaching staff. "Some players and members of the coaching staff called my mother to offer their support. These are the kinds of things that give me the strength to overcome this difficult time. The surgery was successful, and now I just want to rest and begin rehabilitation to get back to playing as soon as possible."
This Tuesday, still in the hospital, Renato Augusto received a visit from the president of Flamengo, Márcio Braga.
Jônatas trains with the starters and should face Cardoso Moreira\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Returning to Flamengo after a lackluster stint with Espanyol, which still holds his federation rights, midfielder Jônatas is expected to earn his first start of the season this Thursday, when the Rubro-Negro face Cardoso Moreira in the second round of the Campeonato Carioca. On Tuesday morning, coach Joel Santana led a training session, in which Jônatas trained the entire time in place of Cristian. The change has not yet been confirmed by Joel Santana, who will only speak to the press after training on Wednesday. However, some players have commented on the possible change in the Flamengo lineup.
"They're both great players, but Jônatas is a player who goes more forward and we just have to be careful not to leave ourselves too exposed," highlighted right-back Leonardo Moura.
In place of Renato Augusto, who suffered a facial injury and will only return to the field in 45 days, Joel Santana opted to bring in Marcinho for Tuesday's training session, which ended in a 1-1 draw with the reserves. The starting players trained with the following formation: Diego, Léo Moura, Fábio Luciano, Ronaldo Angelim, and Juan; Jailton, Jônatas, Ibson, and Toró; Marcinho and Souza.
"Flamengo's squad is very strong, and when you get an opportunity, you have to take it. The important thing is for Flamengo to win, regardless of whether I start or play as a substitute," commented Marcinho.
During the training session, Joel also tested a different formation, moving Marcinho back to midfield and replacing Jaílton with striker Obina. While awaiting the coach's decision, Obina is eager to earn an opportunity.
"I'm working hard to take advantage of the opportunities. Of course, I hope to start, but Joel knows what to do. If he needs me, I'm ready to help the team," said the favorite of the red-and-black fans, who guarantees a good rapport with Souza, despite the similarities between their playing styles.
"The times we've played together, we've done very well. We have a really good rapport, and I hope I can play alongside him in the next few games," he analyzed.
However, regardless of who Joel Santana chooses to replace Renato Augusto, Flamengo's squad avoids talking about absolute favoritism in next Thursday's match.
"Cardoso Moreira made the game against Fluminense difficult, so we have to be smart to build on the result. The important thing is that Flamengo is prepared to face any opponent," concluded Leonardo Moura.
Renato Augusto is discharged this Wednesday\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Midfielder Renato Augusto, who underwent surgery last Monday to have 11 screws inserted into his face to repair a sunken cheekbone, is expected to be discharged home this Wednesday. The Flamengo player, who was involved in a collision with a Boavista player, is expected to return to the field only in mid-March. "We're sad to lose Renato Augusto, who is a great player and a great teammate, and someone we're always close to. But we're rooting for him to return as soon as possible," said right-back Leonardo Moura.
And Renato Augusto is expected to receive a tribute from Flamengo. According to vice president of football Kléber Leite, the number ten jersey will not be worn by any player while Renato is recovering.
Without Renato Augusto, Flamengo continues to try to regularize some players as soon as possible to strengthen the squad for the Campeonato Carioca.
Director of Football Eduardo Manhães stated that the club has already made the payment for goalkeeper Bruno's federation rights. Now, the club is waiting for MSI to confirm receipt of the amount so that Atlético-MG can release the player's documentation.
Another player who hasn't yet been regularized is striker Diego Tardelli. According to Eduardo Manhães, all that's left is for São Paulo to sign the sales contract so the player's paperwork can be finalized.

Zico approves temporary retirement of 10
The greatest player in Flamengo's history considers the tribute to Renato Augusto to be fair
Zico tells Renato Augusto not to be afraid of playing similar plays when he returns
Flamengo's eternal number 10, Zico, welcomed the Flamengo board's decision to not wear the number 10 jersey until young Renato Augusto returns to the field after suffering a bruised cheekbone in the match against Boavista. Although he has never received this kind of honor, "Galinho de Quintino" (The Little Rooster of Quintino) says in an interview with the newspaper "Lance!" that the message is positive.
"Any tribute has to have a reason. If it's from the heart, it's always welcome," says the coach of Fenerbahçe, Turkey.
Zico also took the opportunity to wish Renato Augusto a speedy recovery and advise him not to be afraid when he returns to play.
"It was an unintentional play. A normal challenge for the ball. Especially since it was with his head, not his elbow, that the defender (Hélton) hit him. The important thing is for him to understand that this will only happen to whoever is on the field. He's young, he'll recover well and return in time. But he can't worry about this kind of play; it's part of the game," says Zico, recalling that early in his career he fractured his nose in a similar play.
Jônatas' regularization confirmed
Goalkeeper Bruno's name has not yet appeared in the CBF's Daily Newsletter
Jônatas is available to coach Joel Santana to face Cardoso Moreira
Jônatas's registration as a Flamengo player was confirmed Tuesday afternoon, after his name appeared in the CBF's Daily Information Bulletin (BID). The club had already submitted the documentation, but official confirmation had not yet been made. Leo Medeiros, too, has now been registered.
The most significant absence is goalkeeper Bruno. Atlético-MG is expected to submit the player's documentation this Wednesday. Regarding forward Diego Tardelli, Flamengo expects to have his documentation released by Thursday.
In the last training session held at Gávea, Joel Santana selected Jônatas in place of Cristian. Therefore, the starting lineup against Cardoso Moreira should be: Diego; Leo Moura, Fábio Luciano, Ronaldo Angelim, and Juan; Jaílton, Jônatas, Ibson, and Toró; Marcinho and Souza.
Conmebol supports Bolivia for games at altitude
FIFA has banned games at venues 2.750 meters above sea level.
The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has unanimously announced its support for Bolivia's stance on holding matches at altitude, in opposition to FIFA's ban on games at altitudes above 2.750 meters above sea level.
South American leaders, who met on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Chilean National Football Association (ANFP) in Santiago, reiterated their support for Bolivia and announced that Copa Libertadores matches could be played in cities at an altitude of over 2.750 meters.
However, the 2010 South Africa World Cup Qualifying matches depend on FIFA, which prevents Conmebol from authorizing them.
"This is not an issue we cannot resolve, and we will express our solidarity and seek ways to ask the FIFA Executive Committee to reconsider the decision. We will go to FIFA with sound arguments and supported by a medical-scientific commission to discuss it," said CONMEBOL Secretary General Eduardo de Luca.
"The South American Football Confederation has maintained unity. We will draft a response to FIFA's statement, and we will request a meeting with the organization. The most important thing is that all of South America is united," adds Uruguayan Eugenio Figueredo, vice president of CONMEBOL.

Bruno at Flamengo training in Gávea
Flamengo fans must be wondering about Bruno's situation. The player hasn't been able to make his debut for the club this season due to bureaucratic issues, but that should happen this Thursday against Cardoso Moreira, or at the latest this weekend against Duque de Caxias. The fact is that news has circulated in the press about Milan's alleged interest in the goalkeeper.
This Tuesday, lawyer Michel Assef Filho, interim vice president of the red-black football club (Kléber Leite is on vacation), showed great calm when commenting on the matter.
"Everything is signed with both Bruno and the investors. Last week, we paid the first installment of €700. Today (Tuesday), the investors found the payment in their account. For Bruno to leave, Milan would have to pay a termination fee to Flamengo," explains Michel, who was unable to disclose the exact amount.
According to the board, Atlético-MG, which still holds Bruno's federation rights, must send the athlete's documentation this Wednesday so that he can be registered as a Flamengo player in the CBF's Daily Information Bulletin and finally make his season debut.

The player stated that the messages of encouragement give him more strength to begin the recovery process and return to playing. "I'm very grateful for the outpouring of affection I've received from the fans, the board, the press, and my friends at Flamengo. Some players and members of the coaching staff called to offer their support. It's these gestures that give me the strength to overcome this difficult time. The surgery was successful, and now all I can think about is resting and starting rehabilitation to return to playing as soon as possible," he said through his press office.
Renato Augusto said he was honored by the club's board's initiative to not allow another player to wear the number 10 shirt until he recovers.
"I was surprised, but very honored by the board's decision to not wear the number 10 jersey while I recover. I can't thank them enough for this. Keep praying for me, and I'll be back soon," he says.
Marcio Braga visits Renato Augusto
Rubro-negro president says the player's face is still very swollen

Midfielder Renato Augusto, who underwent surgery on Monday to repair fractured facial bones, received a visit from Flamengo president Marcio Braga on Tuesday. During Flamengo's opening match in the Campeonato Carioca, the player collided with Boavista defender Édson and suffered serious injuries. He will be discharged this Wednesday to continue his recovery at home.
Márcio Braga said that the surgery site is quite swollen, but that Renato is motivated to recover quickly.
- The right side of his face is still very swollen, but he's fine, very confident that he'll be back playing soon - he says.
In an interview with GLOBOESPORTE.COM this Tuesday, the doctor who performed the surgery on Renato Augusto, Augusto César Lima, said that the player is very anxious to return home.
Leo Moura: 'With Jônatas, the ball comes out round'
Fla's full-back analyzes the differences in characteristics between Renato Augusto and Marcinho

Leo Moura praises the technical quality of Jônatas, who is expected to make his debut on Thursday
Flamengo is expected to have some changes to its lineup compared to the starting eleven that started the match against Boavista in the Campeonato Carioca opener last Sunday. Midfielder Jônatas trained as a starter this Tuesday in Cristian's place and has a good chance of facing Cardoso Moreira on Thursday at Maracanã. Another change is the addition of Marcinho, replacing Renato Augusto, who will be out for about two months following facial surgery.
Right-back Leo Moura approves of Jônatas's addition to the team. He praises his teammate's technical quality and says that, alongside the midfielder, "the ball bounces smoothly."
"Jônatas has a good long pass, just like Cristian, and he's very good at getting forward. The ball comes out well; we've played together before and I know his quality. But we have to be careful not to expose ourselves too much. We'll improve as the games go on, and we're working hard on that," he says.
Leo Moura analyzed the possible choice of Marcinho to replace Renato Augusto. The full-back believes that the two, despite being great players, have different characteristics.
"The two have different characteristics. Renato is a stronger player and handles the ball well. Marcinho is a player who carries the ball more and creates space in the opposing defense. We are all very saddened by Renato Augusto's condition, and we hope he recovers soon," he says.
Obina dreams of a chance in attack

Obina is banking on a good rapport with Souza to secure a spot in attack.
The second half of Flamengo's training session on Tuesday at Gávea featured Souza and Obina, with Marcinho sitting deeper to create the plays. The Bahia native hopes to be included in the starting lineup by coach Joel Santana, but he knows the strategy could be too bold, especially since it's the beginning of the season and the players aren't yet 100% fit.
"I'm training to find my place. I hope to start, but that's up to Joel. If I come in, the team will become more offensive; it's a formation that can be dangerous because of the defensive aspect. We can't concede a goal," he says.
Obina has another competitor for the attacking spot: Diego Tardelli, signed from São Paulo. The player is the favorite to start, but he's not yet fully recovered from a right ankle injury. The Bahia native is banking on his chemistry with Souza to win the nod.
"Everyone is capable of competing for a starting spot. When I get the chance, I'll try to score goals. My connection with Souza is good; the times we played together last year, we did well. Sometimes I move out of the box more, other times he moves around more," he says.
The player lamented the problem that occurred with Renato Augusto, who will be inactive for about two months, and consequently, open up a vacancy in the team.
- I'm very sad. I'd rather have my place with him playing here - he says.
Maracanã will inaugurate Fan Hall
Armando Giesta, from Fluminense, will be the first to appear among the illustrious fans
Maracanã, which already had a Walk of Fame honoring athletes who made history at the stadium since its 50th anniversary in 2000, will inaugurate the Fan Hall this Wednesday. The first person to receive a 1,80m x 60cm plaque will be Armando Giesta, 80, a Fluminense fan. The ceremony will take place at 18:30 pm on the access ramp to the green stands on the third floor, before the match between Fluminense and Duque de Caxias in the Campeonato Carioca.
Armando, born in Valença, Rio de Janeiro state, was unanimously nominated by Fluminense's board of directors and fans. In addition to receiving the plaque, the Fluminense fan will receive a medal bearing his name and the club's crest. He participated in the campaign for the construction of the Maracanã stadium and watched the Brazilian national team participate in the 50 World Cup, as well as winning several titles for Fluminense.
Thursday is Flamengo's turn
This Thursday, before Flamengo vs. Cardoso Moreira, it will be time to pay tribute, in memory of Jaime de Carvalho. The Flamengo fan, who died in 1976, was the founder of the Charanga, which introduced music into stadiums to support Flamengo and distract opponents.
The tribute will be received by Jaime's family, who live in Paulo de Frontin, a municipality in Rio de Janeiro.

Marcinho joins the team and could be Renato Augusto's replacement
Coach Joel Santana led a training session this Tuesday morning in Gávea. The new additions to the training session included midfielder Marcinho replacing Renato Augusto, who will be out of the Flamengo squad for about 60 days due to facial surgery, and Jônatas replacing Cristian. The initial expectation was that the midfielder, now with his documentation ready to be regularized, would replace Jaílton. The result was 1-1: Ibson and Éder scored.
The starting lineup consisted of: Diego; Leo Moura, Fábio Luciano, Ronaldo Angelim, and Juan; Jaílton, Jônatas, Ibson, and Toró; and Marcinho and Souza. Defender Rodrigo and forward Diego Tardelli, who are not yet in good physical condition, trained with the reserves.
Midfielder Gavilán was absent from training. The player went to Asunción, Paraguay, to obtain a work visa to regularize his status. He received the visa, but not the ticket to return to Rio de Janeiro in time for training. The athlete is scheduled to arrive this Wednesday.
Flamengo faces Cardoso Moreira, this Thursday, at Maracanã, in the second round of the Campeonato Carioca.

Zico approves tribute to Renato Augusto
Flamengo idol sees no problem with temporary retirement of number 10 shirt

Hugo Perruso RIO DE JANEIRO
The Flamengo board's tribute to Renato Augusto came as no surprise to the greatest number 10 in history. In an interview with LANCENET! on Tuesday, Zico said he thought it was a good idea to temporarily retire the number until the midfielder recovers from the facial injury he suffered in the match against Boavista last Sunday.
The biggest idol of the red-and-black fans doesn't recall seeing this kind of tribute at Gávea. For Zico, the message is positive and he sees no problem with it.
"Any tribute must have a reason. If it's from the heart, it's always welcome," he said.
The Flamengo idol wished Renato Augusto a speedy recovery and took the opportunity to advise him on his return to the field. Above all, Zico asked him to act naturally and not be afraid to participate in plays like he was when he was injured.
"It was an unintentional play. A normal ball dispute. Especially since it was with his head, not his elbow, that the defender (Hélton) hit him. The important thing is for him to understand that this will only happen to those who are on the field. He's young, he'll recover well and return in time. But he can't worry about this kind of play; it's part of the game," Zico stated.
And, to illustrate the importance of not worrying, Zico recalled a similar incident that happened to him at the beginning of his career, but which didn't change the way he played and contested plays.
"I broke my nose in a similar incident. The player, I don't remember who it was, headed the ball back and hit me. I left the field bleeding and was out for a while," said Flamengo's eternal number 10.
Jônatas and Léo Medeiros are regularized
The expectation is that Bruno and Tardelli can also be registered in time.
Flamengo will now be able to count on Jônatas and Léo Medeiros for this Thursday's match against Cardoso Moreira. Both names are already listed in the Rio de Janeiro Federation's Athlete Registration Bulletin (BIRA).
According to the interim vice-president of football, Michel Asseff Filho (Kléber Leite is on vacation), the board is also trying to regularize Bruno and Diego Tardelli in time for the game.
Regarding Bruno, the situation has already been resolved with the group of investors who hold the goalkeeper's economic rights. The deposit for the first installment of Bruno's purchase (700 euros) has been located, and the investors must release the funds to Atlético-MG by this Wednesday to allow the transfer.
Flamengo also plans to submit Diego Tardelli's documentation to the Federation this Wednesday to register him. The striker has already signed an employment contract with the club.
The most complicated situation for Thursday concerns Éder. The striker's documentation has not yet been submitted by the São Paulo Federation, and he is expected to miss the game.
"I think Bruno and Tardelli should be fit to play. I'm optimistic. As for Éder, he's still a bit tied up with the São Paulo federation," he stated.
Bruno's case is resolved with a phone call
Striker Diego Tardelli has also not been regularized by the CBF yet.
Goalkeeper Bruno is not yet fit to play
Fred Gomes RIO
The saga of Bruno's ability to play for Flamengo in 2008 depends on a phone call to end it. Eduardo Manhães, Flamengo's executive director, guarantees that the obstacle is the lack of contact between the group of investors who own part of the player's economic rights and Atlético Mineiro, the club that developed the player.
"We're still waiting for the investors to resolve the issue with Atlético Mineiro. All it takes is a phone call," the director explained.
Diego Tardelli, signed last week from São Paulo, has also not yet been regularized, but Manhães believes the process will be simpler.
"We've already sent the purchase agreement signed by President Márcio Braga. We haven't deposited it yet, as we need the contract returned with São Paulo's signatures," he concluded.
Renato Augusto thanks for support after surgery
Supporter was surprised that Flamengo's number 10 shirt was not used
Renato Augusto is expected to be out of the team for around 40 days.
LANCEPRESS!
Flamengo supporter Renato Augusto was moved by the outpouring of support following his cheekbone surgery on Monday. The player remains recovering from the surgery and takes the opportunity to thank everyone who has shown concern for his condition.
"I'm very grateful for the outpouring of affection I've received from the fans, the board, the press, and my friends at Flamengo. Some players and members of the coaching staff called my mother to offer their support. These are the kinds of gestures that give me the strength to overcome this difficult time. The surgery was successful, and now I just want to rest and begin rehabilitation to return to playing as soon as possible," he said.
Renato Augusto was surprised by the news that Flamengo's number 10 jersey, which he wears, will not be worn by another player during his recovery period. He learned of the decision from vice president of football Kléber Leite, who, along with president Márcio Braga, visited him.
"I was surprised, but very honored by the board's initiative. I can't thank them enough for this gesture. Keep praying for me, and I'll be back soon," he concluded.
Renato Augusto is expected to be away from the team for around 40 days.
Without a flight, Gavilán will only train this Wednesday at Fla
Player went to Paraguay on Monday to get a work visa
Fred Gomes RIO
Without a flight from Paraguay, where he went to get his work visa on Monday, to return to Brazil, midfielder Gavilán was unable to participate in training on Tuesday.
According to the club's press office, the Paraguayan would only return on the 26th due to a shortage of flights. However, the player managed to arrange his return for this Wednesday.
The Jônatas-Ibson duo stands out in a collective
The two starred in a beautiful play in the starting team's only goal.

With a standout performance by Jônatas and Ibson, the starters won Tuesday's match 1-0 with a goal scored by the number 7, who on Sunday wore the number 100 on his back for having completed his hundredth game with the red-black shirt.
In a training session held this Tuesday morning in Gávea, the starters and reserves tied 1-1. Ibson opened the scoring for the main team. Young Éder scored the goal for the substitutes, who included Diego Tardelli.
The starters' goal came in the 16th minute, when Jônatas, with a three-finger pass, found Ibson. He controlled the ball well and fired a cross-shot, leaving Bruno with no chance. The protagonists of this beautiful play were notable for their combination of plays, in addition to providing significant support for the attack. Flamengo's number 5 in the 2006 Copa do Brasil victory stood out for his vast repertoire of effective plays, achieving success on most of his long passes.
After 24 minutes of training, Obina, who started on the reserve team, came on to replace Jaílton, who retired. Joel chose young Éder to replace the Bahia native among the substitutes.
In the 35th minute, the reserves equalized. After a counterattack, Diego Tardelli received the ball between Flamengo's starting defenders and left Éder, who, unmarked, surprised goalkeeper Diego with a beautiful chip over him.
At 10:16 a.m., when the training session reached its 37th minute, Joel stopped the session to train the starting defense. Cristian, along with fullbacks Luizinho and Egídio, were responsible for the ball passes into the box.
