Flamengo takes the lead, but lets Juventude equalize (2-2)

CAXIAS DO SUL, RS. After leading twice, Flamengo let victory slip away and drew 2-2 with Juventude. The red-and-black team, which hasn't won outside Rio since the second round of the Brazilian Championship, also had a legitimate goal disallowed by the referee. With the result, the team moves up one place to 14th. On Saturday, Flamengo faces Atlético-MG at Maracanã.
"We needed the win. This result was bad," lamented full-back Juan.
In the pouring rain, Flamengo tried to impose its ball control on the soggy field. But their efforts were hampered by potholes and puddles. Six minutes in, the most controversial play of the match occurred. Juan crossed low from the left to Leonardo Moura, who, in line with the defenders, tapped in first time to score. Under heavy rain and freezing cold, Flamengo only drew 2-2 with Juventude yesterday at Alfredo Jaconi in Caxias do Sul and was unable to break a nearly ten-year streak of not beating their opponent in Serra Gaúcha.
Léo Moura and Leonardo scored for the Red-Blacks, while Vanzini and Tiago scored for the home side.
The game began with the visitors pressing heavily and trying to create runs down the left with Juan and Maxi. Just six minutes in, Juan made a good play and crossed for Léo Moura, in a legal position, to open the scoring, but Paraná's assistant coach, Rogério Rolim, raised his flag and disallowed what would have been the game's first goal.
Despite having a goal unfairly disallowed, the Rio team continued to dominate the match, with Cristian and Souza standing out for their grit and Léo Moura for his technique. In the 21st minute, after a beautiful one-two with Souza, Léo Moura received the ball unmarked in the box and fired past goalkeeper Michel Alves.
The goal woke up the home team, who a minute later hit a beautiful header against goalkeeper Bruno's crossbar. Exploiting the gap left behind by Flamengo's wingers, Juventude surged forward and equalized in the 25th minute, with Vanzini heading in a corner from the left.

Defensive mistakes bother players
Despite being twice ahead on the scoreboard, Flamengo conceded a draw to Juventude this Sunday in Caxias do Sul. The mood in the red-and-blacks' locker room was one of frustration, as the goals scored by the Rio Grande do Sul team came after mistakes by the Rio de Janeiro defense.
Supporter Toró, who was substituted in the second half, lamented the mistakes of Flamengo's defenders.
"The game was really tough, but we shouldn't have conceded such silly goals the way we did. That can't happen," said Toró.
Present in both Juventude goals, midfielder Rômulo defended himself by leaving the field and blamed the goals on the match referee Evandro Rogério Roman.
"The guy pushed me and the referee didn't give anything, so he managed to head the ball. Every time a Juventude player would push me and the referee didn't call anything, so it's difficult," said Rômulo.
Leonardo Moura, a standout player in the match alongside striker Souza, also complained about Flamengo's goals. For the player, a team that wants to qualify well can't afford to concede goals like those on Sunday.
"We can't concede goals the way we did here," added the full-back.
Fla's next game is against Atlético-MG, next Saturday, at Maracanã.
Rio teams perform well in synchronized swimming tournament
Uberlândia, MG — Three synchronized swimming championships were held simultaneously this weekend in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais.
In the Brazilian Junior Synchronized Swimming Championship, which featured 10 teams, Paineiras do Morumby won with 428 points, followed by Fluminense and Flamengo with 343 and 333 points, respectively. In level B, the best team was the University of Paraná with 478 points, and Cief/Brasília with 116.
The second championship was the Combined Free Routine Youth (Combo), in which the victory went to the same winners of the other competition in its A and B levels. Third place went to Nikita-Sesi/Português do Recife, with 132.
There was also the Brazilian Youth Technical Routines level A with Tijuca Tênis, in first, with 285 points; and Corinthians/SP, in second, with 267.

CAXIAS DO SUL, RS - In heavy rain, Flamengo once again slipped up on the road in the Brazilian Championship. They led twice but were ultimately held to a 2-2 draw with Juventude at Alfredo Jaconi Stadium, dropping them to 14th place.
With just one win so far outside of Rio, Flamengo, in long sleeves, shook off the cold of the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul and played well, exploiting the flanks.
Juan was the first to find the way: he crossed from the left in the 7th minute for Leonardo Moura to score. But referee Evandro Rogério Roman ruled the play invalid, citing offside.
Leonardo Moura didn't give up. In the 21st minute, he scored another, this one legitimately considered by the referee. The play started with Toró and continued with a beautiful exchange of passes involving Maxi, Souza, and finally Leonardo Moura.
Despite the slippery pitch, the game was close. Juventude nearly equalized in the 22nd minute when Tadeu hit the crossbar after a cross from the left.
In the 25th minute, however, goalkeeper Bruno wasn't so lucky. After a corner kick, Vanzini rose higher than Rômulo to head the ball. The ball bounced off the ground, passing Flamengo's goalkeeper and, finally, Leonardo Moura. It was Juventude's equalizer: 1-1.
Flamengo regained the lead six minutes into the second half. Leonardo Moura took a corner, Ronaldo Angelim took a shot, the ball bounced off the defense and landed at the feet of Leonardo, who had come on at halftime in place of Maxi. He finished perfectly.
But a defensive error by Flamengo allowed Juventude to equalize. Fábio Luciano and Rômulo clashed heads while trying to clear a ball, and Tiago, who had replaced Renato, made it 2-2 in the 14th minute. Rômulo also admitted that the defense failed: "We had some silly moments, but that's normal. We got a result that wasn't that bad. It's always difficult to beat Juventude at home."
More realistically, left-back Juan wasn't happy with the result in the South: "We needed the win. This result was bad for us."
With 34 points, Flamengo was overtaken by Atlético-PR, who beat Paraná and reached 35. And they only avoided the brink of relegation because Corinthians and Atlético-MG did not win in the round.
Defender Fábio Luciano blamed the bad weather for the defensive lapses. "It was a very difficult game. The pitch was in bad shape because of the rain, and that forced us to change our style of play. It became more difficult. It was bad for both teams. It's not our fault it rained three days in a row," he stated.
With the 2-2 draw, an old taboo was maintained: Flamengo has not beaten Juventude in Caxias do Sul since October 1997.
On Saturday, the Gávea team will face Atlético-MG at Maracanã. Roger will be available for coach Joel Santana to use.

Flamengo's 2-2 draw with Juventude this Sunday wasn't just a bad result because the team didn't secure three points and a better position in the standings. The red-and-black team also failed to break a long and uncomfortable streak: a ten-year winless streak in Caxias do Sul.

In the rain, two goals
Flamengo started well and attacked Juventude. Just seven minutes in, Leo Moura found the net. However, referee Evandro Rogério Roman ruled it offside. The play was questionable. According to TV Globo's "Tira-Teima," the right-back was in line with the ball when Juan crossed.
The Rio de Janeiro team continued to outplay the home side. In the 13th minute, Maxi stole the ball on the left, passed it to Souza in the middle, and the number 9 found Leo Moura alone on the right. Flamengo's latest signing in the Brazilian Championship, Argentine midfielder Hugo Colace, made his debut for the team this Sunday. However, he only played for one minute. Flamengo remains without a win in Caxias do Sul since 1997. This Sunday, Rubro-Negro faced Juventude at the Alfredo Jaconi Stadium, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul and drew 2-2, in a match valid for the 27th round of the Brazilian Championship.
Unlike recent away matches, Flamengo started off with a bang and played much better than their opponents. Just six minutes in, Juan crossed for Leonardo Moura to finish in the goal. However, assistant coach Rogério Rolim wrongly ruled the play out.
The refereeing's misfortune didn't faze Flamengo, who remained on the offensive. Leonardo Moura burst into the box and fired a powerful shot to the right of Juventude's goal.
