Women in charge of Fla x Friburguense
The trio will be exclusively female. The referee is making her debut in First Division matches.
Flamengo will be looking to move even closer to the Taça Rio semifinals today at 21:45 p.m. when they face Friburguense at Maracanã Stadium. The game's main attraction will be a first for the State Championship: a female refereeing team.
Simone Xavier de Paula e Silva will be the referee, assisted by Fernanda Lisboa and Lilian Fernandes. The fourth referee will be Sulanir de Souza, and the observer will be Lúcia Azevedo. For Simone, this will be a milestone in her career: she had never refereed a First Division match.
Libertadores: draw leaves Fla ahead
For the 33-year-old judge, being around women helps. Concentration, control, and even vanity are all part of her preparation:
"It's a cool milestone, another space occupied by women. I'm trying to focus on the game, on the opportunity I've been given, and trying to control my anxiety," Simone said, as she prepared to get her hair done. "A good presentation is part of the preparation."
Coach Joel Santana approved the new development.
"Women are qualified to referee games. I think it's wonderful. It makes the atmosphere more enchanting," said the coach.
At Gávea, the concern yesterday was the impact the indictment of the red-and-blacks could have on the team in the decisive stage of the State Championship. The trial of Bruno, Jônatas, Toró, and Obina is scheduled for April 2nd, the final week of the Rio Cup. Joel tried to avoid the topic, but he seemed uncomfortable:
"There are things I'd like to talk about. But here, commas become sentences, and sentences become books. I've been to court, and my family suffered. Rio's football is very rigid. I'll leave it to the lawyers."
Joel assures that he is also working with the athletes.
"Toró shouldn't have done that (kicked Castillo). But he's not a criminal. If a son makes a mistake, I won't whip him. But if they persist in their mistake, I'll take action," he said.
The game against Friburguense could usher in a new approach. Souza points out that, nowadays, TV forces players to be careful, as everything is filmed.
Fans made a flag - in honor of Ibson - that will only be displayed at Maracanã when he renews his contract with Flamengo.
In the Copa Libertadores in Peru, Cienciano and Coronel Bolognesi drew 0-0. The result benefited Flamengo, who shares the lead in Group 4 with Cienciano (seven points), but loses the lead on goal difference. Nacional, from Uruguay, has six points.
Flamengo: Bruno, Leonardo Moura, Ronaldo Angelim, Fabio Luciano and Juan; Cristian, Ibson, Toro and Renato Augusto; Marcinho and Souza. Friburguense: Adriano, Everton, Cadão, Felipe Marques and Gilson; Elan, Cassiano, Vitor Hugo and Guido; Alex and Leo Andrade. Referee: Simone Xavier de Paula e Silva.

Fla reaches the semifinals of the South American League
Rubro-negro beats Sol de América 108 to 76 and now waits for Boca Juniors or Libertad
Claudio Nogueira
More than confirming its excellent run this season, with 20 wins in its last 20 matches, Flamengo's men's basketball team made history last night at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium. Confirming its favoritism, Paulo Chupeta's team easily defeated Sol de América of Paraguay, 108-76, in the South American League. The result secured Flamengo's place in the competition's semifinals for the first time.
The game's top scorer was winger Duda, with 29 points. After yesterday's victory, the Rio de Janeiro team now awaits the winner of the Argentine duel between Boca Juniors and Libertad Sunchalles to find out their opponent in the semifinals.
"We want even more. This squad was formed to fight for the title. Making history is important, but we'll only be satisfied if we're champions," said Duda.
Always ahead on the scoreboard, the red-and-black team had no trouble opening up a healthy lead in the first quarter. And they put on a show for the fans, including Coloneze's dunk shortly before closing the half with a 28-14 lead.
In the second half, Paulo Chupeta made changes, bringing on Amiel, Wagner, and Fernando. The team fell off, but without being threatened. With Duda's return, their dominance increased. At the end of the first half, it was 48-30.
The second half was also all Flamengo's. With just over five minutes remaining, the lead reached 27 points after two free throws by Hélio: 61-34. Paulo Chupeta even had the luxury of launching young Marcellus, recently promoted from the youth team. And they closed the third quarter with a 74-51 lead.
In the decisive stage, with the fans celebrating, Flamengo simply valued possession of the ball and easily secured their unprecedented qualification.
Flamengo: Helio (18), Duda (29), Marcelinho (13), Alírio and Coloneze (14). Entered: Amiel (13), Wagner, Maicon (4), Fernando (12), Marcellus (5). Sol de América: Viveros (6), Paniagua (3), Ocampo (3), Orr (15) and Kiganya (28). Entered: Ramoa (11), Lopez (10) and Vairoletto.
Baby, the national team's pivot, undergoes surgery in São Paulo
In São Paulo, Brazilian national team center Rafael "Baby" Araújo underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee yesterday at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital. According to Carlos Vicente Andreoli, head of the men's national team medical team, the center should return to the court in four to six weeks. Baby was injured in a match against Spartak St. Petersburg in Russia three months ago. He is expected to play in the Greece Pre-Olympic Tournament in July.
The race against time begins
Diego Hypólito wants to train in a month
WITH HIS KNEE bandaged, Diego Hypólito waves as he leaves the hospital where he underwent surgery yesterday in Rio
Sanny Bertoldo
Away from floor exercises, Diego Hypólito begins the rehabilitation process today for his right knee, which he underwent surgery yesterday in Rio. The arthroscopy, performed for a medial meniscus injury, was considered a success by João Granjeiro, the orthopedist and medical coordinator of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, who performed the surgery, and by the athlete's physician, Robson de Bem. Diego underwent surgery this morning and left the hospital limping yesterday, but without the aid of crutches or a wheelchair.
"I'm still worried about walking, but I'm not feeling any pain. The arthroscopy was performed at the right time. If I had continued training, the injury could have become serious. Now, it's time to begin recovery. Although it wasn't a complicated surgery, I have to take care of myself and follow the entire medical schedule," said the gymnast, who, in 2005, after undergoing surgery for a fractured tibia in his right leg, disobeyed medical advice and returned to training early, causing a new fracture in the area. "I'm confident and confident. I've been training for four years to do well at the Olympics, and one month won't be a problem."
Gymnast confident that he will be 100% in Beijing
According to Granjeiro, Diego will rest the joint for the first 24 hours, without any weight bearing, and will undergo ice treatment. Later this week, he will begin physical therapy. Next week, the gymnast will begin muscle-strengthening exercises, which will increase in intensity until the fourth week, when he can begin sport-specific movements.
Typically, the recovery time for arthroscopy is four to six weeks; but for Robson de Bem, he should be ready to return to normal training in the shortest time possible.
"Knowing Diego as I have for ten years, I believe he won't need more than a month to recover. He has a tremendous capacity for overcoming challenges," the doctor stated.
The gymnast was accompanied by his father, Walter, and his mother, Geni, the entire time. According to Geni, he was a little nervous before the surgery, but when it was time to go into the operating room, he was calm. For his father, the worst is over:
"It was a shock, but it had to be done. And there's still a long way to go before the Beijing Olympics. He's very strong and optimistic, and he wanted to walk as soon as he got back to his room. So I have no doubt he'll be back training soon."
Taken aback by the news, his sister, Daniele, who trains with the women's national team in Curitiba, showed no concern about her brother's recovery:
"I'm sure he'll recover very quickly. He had the surgery on time, and besides, it's a simple problem. For Diego, thirty days is nothing."
In any case, the surgery, which lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes, rules Diego out of the World Cup in Cottbus, Germany, from April 11th to 13th. He's not expected to return to competition until the Moscow, Russia, event in May. Even so, the gymnast shows no signs of discouragement. Focused on what will be his first Olympic appearance, he knows he's very close to making history by becoming the first Brazilian gymnast to reach the podium at the Olympic Games. A two-time world champion, he's the favorite for gold on the floor exercise.
"If I don't win, it won't be because I didn't have time. I ask people to stay calm and cheer for me, because I'm sure everything will work out," he said once again, confident that he will be 100% ready for the Beijing Olympics in August.

Time to sleep late to dry Bolognesi
Flamengo's players slept late, but for a noble reason. Coronel Bolognesi and Cienciano faced off in Tacna in the early hours of yesterday morning. Both clubs are in the same group as Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores, and a victory for Bolognesi could have helped the Rio de Janeiro team advance to the round of 16.
"It won't cost anything to watch this game, especially since our match isn't until tomorrow (tonight). We'll give them a quick refresher and take the opportunity to analyze our opponents," Souza explained.
Coach Joel Santana tried to downplay the match's importance. He believes Flamengo can't rely on other results:
"We have to worry about qualifying on our own merits. At Flamengo, everything is difficult, especially when you need help from your opponents," Joel admitted.
Doubt
During yesterday's recreational training session in Gávea, forward Diego Tardelli sprained his right ankle. He will be re-evaluated today to see if he can be benched against Friburguense.
Ibson is now the fans' flag bearer
Even with the uncertainty surrounding his stay at Flamengo, when his contract expires on June 30th, Ibson received a tribute from Flamengo fans. Some members of an organized faction presented him with a flag bearing his face yesterday. Flattered, he couldn't contain his emotion. However, the flag will only go to Maracanã when the player does his part: renew his contract with the club.
"I'll try to convince them to put up the flag before signing the renewal. My heart is sad that I haven't resolved this issue yet, but I'm happy for the recognition. But I'm more beautiful than this painting," joked the player, who also denied that São Paulo was interested in signing him again.
After paying tribute to Ibson and goalkeeper Bruno, fans will now end the series of flags for players from the current squad, with Souza.
"I identify a lot with Flamengo, I've been a fan of the club since I was a kid and I try to give my all in every game," he said, taking the opportunity to see the positive side of the fans' choice: "This is also good to show a good side of Souza, I've changed, I don't want to be the villain anymore," he said.
Zico
Flamengo's greatest idol has become a grandfather. Felipe, Bruno Coimbra's son, was born early yesterday morning. Galinho was unable to attend his grandson's birth because he was in Turkey.
Adidas threatens deal with Nike
It's not official yet. But for the first time, a Flamengo executive admits that the relationship with Nike, the club's sports equipment supplier, is, at the very least, strained. Yesterday, Vice President of Legal Affairs Adalberto Ribeiro confirmed that the club is seeking to terminate its contract and that the company has already been notified of the parties' interest in terminating the agreement.
"Flamengo wants to terminate the contract due to the noncompliance with some clauses," explained Adalberto Ribeiro. However, despite his dissatisfaction, he left open the possibility of a turnaround in the case. "Currently, the situation between the two parties is contentious, but that doesn't prevent them from resuming dialogue."
Also yesterday in São Paulo, news broke, reported by reporter Thales Calipo of the website Máquina do Esporte, that Adidas, a German manufacturer and major commercial rival of Nike, was interested in becoming a supplier to Flamengo and Corinthians. It had already made a formal offer to both clubs. The contract length and the fees, which could be up to double those currently paid by the North American company, are still being treated confidentially, as is the approach, which has not been confirmed by anyone.
Despite adopting a diplomatic stance publicly, Flamengo is dissatisfied with several aspects of the contract and therefore does not rule out changing partners. Nike, for its part, states that it does not comment on contractual details of its sponsors. It also claims to have a long-standing relationship with the club and intends to maintain it.

Ibson, Souza and Léo Moura celebrate the goal in the game that served as a training session for today's game
Aiming to secure early qualification for the Taça Rio semifinals, Flamengo has two important matches ahead. The first will be today at 21:45 PM against Friburguense at Maracanã, and the second against Madureira on Saturday. Even though Flamengo is already assured of a spot in the Campeonato Carioca final after winning the Taça Guanabara, everyone at the club is intent on winning the second round to avoid two final matches.
This is because these matches would be interspersed with the Copa Libertadores round of 16. To avoid this strain, coach Joel Santana is relentless in resting players. Yesterday, after training at Gávea, he confirmed that he will field his best players tonight, including Fábio Luciano and Ronaldo Angelim, who missed the team's victory over Cabofriense. The other change is Toró replacing the suspended Kleberson. The player, incidentally, has been having a difficult few days and, as a result, has been receiving special attention from the coach.
"They're trying to make Toró out to be a criminal, which isn't true. He's a guy with integrity, but he made mistakes and will pay for them if necessary. My job here is to give advice. I don't pat anyone on the head, I just show them the right path," explained Joel, who made a point of praising today's opponent. "It'll be a tough game. Friburguense made the match against Fluminense very difficult and only fell behind after having a player sent off. Even though they lost to Caxias in the last match, they had the best player on the field and missed a penalty," he praised.
Another highlight of the game will be the all-female refereeing team. To avoid the controversy, Joel joked: "That doesn't worry me, it's even better, it adds a touch of brilliance to the show," he said.
For Friburguense, the only change compared to the team defeated by Duque de Caxias will be the entry of defender Felipe Marques, in place of the suspended Thiago Messias.

Diego Hypólito should soon return to major competitions
Gymnast Diego Hypólito underwent surgery for a medial meniscus injury in his right knee at the Copa D'Or Hospital in Rio de Janeiro and is expected to leave yesterday around 18 p.m., according to orthopedic surgeon João Granjeiro immediately after the surgery. The Brazilian Olympic Committee's medical coordinator is confident the athlete will make a speedy recovery for the Beijing Olympics in August.
"Two weeks ago, Diego was having difficulty training as he normally does on a daily basis. After the posterior injury to the medial meniscus in his right knee was diagnosed, it was decided that he would undergo arthroscopy. I was very pleased with the surgery and can confirm that he will be back training soon. The important thing is that during these first 24 hours, the athlete rests the joint, uses ice, and avoids any type of weight-bearing on the knee. He will begin physical therapy this week, and he is expected to return to training in four weeks," stated doctor João Granjeiro.
Diego's recovery, which will continue with upper limb muscle exercises while he is weakened, will likely last about four weeks to ensure he is in good physical condition for the Olympic Games.
The country's chief physician for the Athens-2004 delegation, Granjeiro, recommends that Hypólito rest his knee completely for 48 hours.

Center Coloneze dunks with determination and scores two more points for Flamengo in the big win
Flamengo demonstrated its strong campaign this season and had no trouble defeating Paraguay's Sol de América 108-76 (48-30) yesterday, securing a spot in the semifinals of the South American Basketball League. With this result, the Red-Black team will face the winner of the Boca Juniors vs. Libertad Sunchales matchup, both from Argentina, in the next round. Flamengo now has a 20-game unbeaten streak, 15 in the National Championship and five in the South American Basketball League.
With a strong first-quarter performance, Flamengo dismantled the Paraguayans' entire strategy. Center Coloneze led the way with beautiful drives and assists for his teammates. Duda's speed and Marcelinho's accuracy quickly led to a nine-point lead (18-9). Then, with two consecutive steals, Flamengo solidified its dominance, taking a 16-point lead (28-12), including a dunk by Coloneze. Sol de América lacked chemistry, and its players committed numerous elementary errors, such as fouls and passing.
In the second quarter, Sol de América tightened its defense and began to react. Flamengo, for the first time, became alarmed and began to rush attacks. But gradually, technical strategist Paulo Chupeta rotated players, and the Rio team regained control of the match. Duda, with three-pointers and an acrobatic dunk, helped extend the lead to 21 points (48 to 27). Steals were the big difference: 11 for the Brazilians, compared to two for the Paraguayans.
"We really did take a dip. But that's normal. The important thing is to get back into the swing of things quickly," said Duda, who was Flamengo's standout performer in the first half.
Determined to put the game to bed, Flamengo tightened its defense and unleashed its greatest weapon: the counterattack. Cuban forward Amiel further accelerated the pace, and victory was virtually assured in the third quarter: 74-51.
In the final quarter, Flamengo simply maintained its dominance and took advantage of Sol de América's desperation to secure a comfortable victory. "Regardless of who our opponent is in the next round, Flamengo has to come out strong and with the same determination. We have to always play strong to win," said Marcelinho, Flamengo's star player.
THE DAY
Fla is careful with cameras scattered around Maracanã
Martha Esteves
Rio - Coach Joel Santana will offer many instructions in his pre-match talk against Friburguense, at 21:45 p.m., at Maracanã. The most obvious is to win at all costs to take an important step toward the Taça Rio semifinals. Another piece of advice, in this Big Brother era with numerous cameras throughout the stadium, is to avoid fouls, shoving, elbowing, or any aggressive behavior.
All to avoid the confusion and the DVDs that have reached prosecutor André Valentin, which have generated accusations. Jônatas, Toró, Obina, and goalkeeper Bruno will be tried next week and risk suspensions of 120 to 540 days. Irritated, Joel Santana tried to avoid controversy.
"Rio de Janeiro football is very rigid. We do everything the rules dictate, invest in good players, train, concentrate, play, and this happens. I don't want to say much so I don't get caught up in it. I just want to get points on the field," the coach lamented.
Striker Souza, who is tired of being known as a brawler, celebrated the fact that he didn't have to face Botafogo on the 16th. Today, he says he takes a deep breath and counts to 10 to avoid making a mistake, but admits that he could have gotten involved in some trouble during the derby.
"I'm tired of being a villain, but when you're hot-tempered, you end up getting into trouble. And even if you want to help, things only get worse. I was suspended for five games in last year's Brasileirão and learned my lesson. I talked to the four of them and asked everyone to calm down," he says.
Midfielder Cristian's advice is different: be careful with the lenses. He adds: "It's best not to try to be a rogue and commit a foul without the referee seeing."
"If the referee is far from the play, a television image could capture the action. Everything is recorded, and we need to be even more careful now because of this," he advises.
Joel doesn't want fights, avoids controversy, and hopes no one is punished. But he won't give up on a convincing victory over Friburguense. "We'll think about the rest later."
Coronel Bolognesi and Cienciano draw in Libertadores
Lima - Coronel Bolognesi and Cienciano, both from Peru, were held to a 0-0 draw today in a match in group 4 of the Libertadores, the same as Flamengo.
With the result, Cienciano leads the group, with seven points in four games, the same score as Flamengo, which occupies second place due to the tiebreaker criteria.
Coronel Bolognesi is currently bottom of the group, with just two points from four matches.
In the next round, Coronel Bolognesi faces Nacional in Uruguay, on Thursday next week.
Cienciano hosts Flamengo on April 9th, in a duel that is worth the leadership of the group.

Joel defends Toró: 'He's not a criminal'
Rio - Coach Joel Santana makes no secret of his fatherly attitude. Yesterday, he once again came to the defense of midfielder Toró, who has been the target of a barrage of criticism for his aggressive behavior on the field. The midfielder revealed that he's facing personal issues and doesn't want to discuss the matter anymore.
Irritated, Joel asked the player for a truce, and said that, despite his 'fatherly' style, he knows how to recognize mistakes and call the players out at the right time.
"Toró is a good boy. He's not a criminal to be treated like this! The boy made a mistake, he can be punished, but we have to go slowly. When boys make mistakes, I don't pat them on the head, no! But I'm not going to whip anyone either."
Far from the controversy, supporter Íbson is only thinking about helping the team while he still has a contract with the club (until June 30th). Yesterday, he received a flag with his face from an organized fan group. But the news will only be in the stands if the player renews his contract.
The supporter said that his 'heart is sad', because he knows that negotiations with Porto, a Portuguese club, are very complicated.
"I'd like the fans to wave this flag before I renew. I'd like to resolve this situation quickly because I'm very anxious about all of this."
Zico's first grandson is born
Rio - The eternal idol of the Red and Black Nation is now a grandfather. Felipe was born, son of Bruno Coimbra and grandson of Zico. "Galinho de Quintino" hasn't met the newest member of the family yet, as he's currently out of the country coaching Fenerbahce in Türkiye.
Bruno Coimbra is Zico's middle son and once had a pagode group called Só no Sapatinho.
Bruno's wife, Danúbia, gave birth early Tuesday morning at Barra Dor Hospital in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. The doting grandfather heard his grandson's first cry over the phone from Istanbul.
Simone has already been hit on in a game and shot in the face
Vain, the referee is not afraid of pressure and reveals that she would never pose nude: 'I'm evangelical'
Rodrigo Lima
Rio - The lipstick and makeup are ready and waiting in the Maracanã locker room. The whistle is too. The fairer sex will once again overcome sexism today when 33-year-old physical education teacher Simone Xavier de Paula e Silva takes over as referee for the match between Flamengo and Friburguense for the Rio Cup.
It will be the first time in history that a trio of women will lead a match for the red-black team, as Simone will have the support of Fernanda Lisboa and Lilian Fernandes Bruno as assistants.
Female referees are becoming increasingly popular, but they remain under the scrutiny of the men. However, Simone, who is also the daughter of a military man and an Army lieutenant, claims she's not afraid of ugly faces. "I've refereed games in the Baixada Fluminense and even in favelas. People have even pulled guns on me and tried to attack me. I can't be afraid of anything," says the former distance runner. "It helps me with my physical fitness," she says.
Simone admits she's nervous and anxious about her first refereeing role in the state's top division. "It's a double-edged sword. While a match like this could get me noticed, I could also be sidelined if I make a mistake," the referee emphasizes, recalling lineswoman Ana Paula Oliveira, who was suspended by the CBF and the São Paulo State Federation for making mistakes and only returned to refereeing matches in the São Paulo state elite last weekend.
The comparison with the country's most famous lineswoman is inevitable, but Simone, who also admits to having been hit on several times and refused dinners during her career, reveals: "I would never pose nude. I'm an evangelical and don't participate in that kind of work. Especially because it damaged her image," says the referee, praising Ana Paula's performance on the field. "She opened doors for all of us. But I still suffer from prejudice from my own refereeing colleagues."
Vain as she was, her cell phone kept ringing during the report. It was her hairdresser preparing a new look for today. "I need to look stunning on screen too," jokes the referee, who also wears makeup and lipstick and dreams of becoming a FIFA referee. "It's time for a woman to referee a World Cup match."
The first female referee was in 2005
Rio - Despite this being a female referee's debut at a Flamengo match, this isn't the first time a woman has refereed a state championship match. In February 2005, 35-year-old physical education teacher Marta Vasconcelos officiated the Guanabara Cup match between Botafogo and Volta Redonda. The referee performed impeccably in the Flamengo's 2-1 victory, which qualified Botafogo for the GB Cup finals.
Yesterday, Simone Xavier de Paula e Silva won the support of the red-and-blacks. "I have nothing against female referees. I think the experience is valuable. I wish her luck," said coach Joel Santana.
Leonardo Moura, meanwhile, stated that it would be better to have a woman referee. "The game is more relaxed because no one complains blatantly, yelling at the referee," the full-back emphasized, with Cristian's support. "Women already rule everything, why not in football?" he asked.

Flamengo will take legal action against Nike
Rio - What was once a rumor has become fact: Flamengo is willing to terminate its contract with Nike, its sports equipment supplier and club sponsor. Flamengo alleges a breach of contract by the company, which has presented problems supplying the club, including Flamengo shirts for sale in stores. Reports suggest that Flamengo is reportedly receiving proposals from two other sports equipment companies, with values significantly higher than those paid by Nike. However, the current contract stipulates that Flamengo can only negotiate with other companies when the contract is three months away, which will only happen in March 2009. To free itself from its commitment to the company, Flamengo will go to court.
Gávea's vice-legal officer, Dr. Adalberto Ribeiro, explained the situation:
"Flamengo intends to have this contract terminated, so the club took the step of notifying Nike alleging breach of contract, there were contractual aspects not met. There was a delay in the delivery of material, which even led the basketball team, on one occasion, to play in a different uniform," he said in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
The lawyer revealed that, because Nike is not very willing to resolve the problems, Flamengo will go to private court, a procedure provided for in the contract:
"I don't see any ill will or good will from Nike in resolving the case. Flamengo issued a notice, but Nike responded by saying the contract was fulfilled. Given this conflict, there will be no solution other than legal action. In the case of this contract, it can't be taken to a public court, but it is possible to go to an arbitration court, a private court, which is what we will do," he explained.
Ribeiro preferred not to set a deadline for the imbroglio to be resolved:
"In theory, arbitration is much faster than conventional public justice, but it's difficult to estimate a timeframe. It's a complex issue. I don't believe there will be a resolution in the short term. I think it will take at least a few months for the court to settle and make a decision on this matter," he said.
However, the lawyer still does not rule out a possible agreement with the company:
"Today, there is a contentious relationship, a conflict that has arisen. But that does not prevent the parties from resuming dialogue during the ongoing process, resulting in a new contract," he said.
When asked about the amount of the termination fine that Flamengo would be forced to pay for breach of contract, Ribeiro was unable to provide the amount, but emphasized that the club will not have to pay it:
"Indeed, the fine is high, but I can't answer that right away, because you have to do some calculations. The fine varies according to the contract period: the amount decreases according to the contract period. But whether there would be a fine at all is debatable. There would be a fine if Flamengo simply wanted to break the contract, which is not the case. Flamengo is trying to terminate the contract based on Nike's breach of contract," he concluded.

Diego undergoes surgery and is expected to be discharged early this evening.
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Brazilian gymnast Diego Hypólito underwent arthroscopy on his right knee this morning and is expected to be discharged later on Tuesday. He is expected to leave Copa D'Or Hospital in Rio de Janeiro around 18 p.m. (Brasília time). The procedure was performed on the athlete due to a slight tear in the medial meniscus, which was causing him pain and preventing him from training normally. The meniscus acts as a shock absorber in the knee.
According to Dr. João Granjeiro, a member of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), the surgery itself lasted 80 minutes. Taking into account the time required for pre- and post-operative procedures, such as anesthesia and resuscitation, the procedure lasted approximately two hours and was successful.
For the first 48 hours after surgery, Diego will need a cane to move around, as he cannot put any weight on his right knee. After this period, the athlete will begin physical therapy.
Within four weeks, the gymnast should be fully fit to resume training for the China Olympics. The two-time world champion in the floor exercise, however, will not be able to compete in the Cottbus, Germany, leg of the Gymnastics World Cup, which will take place from April 11 to 13. This would have been the athlete's first competition in 2008.
As a precaution, Diego's entire knee was examined on the operating table, and no other problems were found. "Diego's knee is fine, intact, despite his intense training load," assured Granjeiro, a former Brazilian volleyball player who competed in the Russian Olympics.
"Two weeks ago, Diego was having difficulty training as he normally does daily. After the posterior injury to the medial meniscus in his right knee was diagnosed, it was decided that he would undergo arthroscopy. I was very pleased with the surgery and can confirm that he will return to training soon. The important thing is that during these first 24 hours, the athlete rests the joint, uses ice, and avoids any type of weight-bearing on the knee. He will begin physical therapy this week," the doctor added.
After the surgery, still in the hall of the VIP floor where Diego is hospitalized, Granjeiro called the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Carlos Nuzman, reassuring him about the surgery and the possibilities of a full recovery for the gymnast, who is accompanied by his family.
Flamengo takes on Friburguense to move closer to the semifinals\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - In the second of its third consecutive match against a smaller club, Flamengo faces Friburguense this Wednesday at 21:45 pm (Brasília time) in the sixth round of the Taça Rio. After beating Cabofriense last weekend, the Rubro-Negro team is hoping for another positive result to move closer to qualifying for the second round semifinals, which could be confirmed on Saturday against Madureira. Flamengo has 12 points and is in second place in Group A, while the Friburgo team has seven points and is still dreaming of one of the spots in Group B. "It will be a very important game for Flamengo, because if we win, we will be very close to qualifying. We know it's a different motivation than Libertadores games, but we have to always go all out when we wear this jersey," said attacking midfielder Marcinho.
Just as in their last match, Flamengo must once again leverage the strength of their full-backs. In the 2-0 victory over Cabofriense, left winger Juan initiated the play that led to both Flamengo goals.
"I'm very happy to be able to help Flamengo. I've been performing well since last year, and I hope to continue to improve. I try to dedicate myself to the maximum in training to be in good physical and technical shape for the game," commented the Flamengo fullback.
Rested last weekend, defenders Fábio Luciano and Ronaldo Angelim are back in the red-black team, which will have only one absence: with three yellow cards, midfielder Kléberson will be replaced by Toró, who has another chance to try to prove that he is not a violent player, despite the recent incidents involving the player.
"It seems like they've forgotten all the good things I've done here, the titles I've won. But I'm not going to question anyone. I'm going to work to turn things around, as I always have," said the midfielder, who was defended by Joel Santana earlier this week.
Reserves, midfielder Jônatas and striker Obina served a suspension and will be on the bench this Wednesday, as they have not yet been judged for the expulsion against Botafogo, which should only happen on April 2nd.
For Friburguense, coach Cleimar Carvalho urged the team to forget about their loss to Duque de Caxias last Sunday. The coach hopes to upset Flamengo this Wednesday to try to bring his team closer to a spot in the Brazilian Championship's Série C.
"The loss to Duque de Caxias wasn't in our plans, but we have to lift our heads and look to bounce back in the games we have left," said Cleimar, who has no players suspended for this Wednesday.
One of the new features of the game will be the female refereeing trio selected for the match. Simone Xavier de Paula e Silva will officiate the match, with Fernanda Lisboa da Silva and Lilian da Silva Fernandes as assistants.
Flamengo confirms interest in changing supplier\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - One day after launching a third uniform, Flamengo confirmed that it is seeking to terminate its contract with Nike. Flamengo's legal vice president, Adalberto Ribeiro, stated that the company has already been notified of the interest in terminating the agreement between the parties. "Flamengo is seeking to terminate the contract due to the non-compliance with some clauses in the contract," Adalberto said this Tuesday in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
Despite his dissatisfaction, the leader left open the possibility of a turnaround in the case. "Currently, the situation between the two parties is contentious, but that doesn't prevent them from resuming dialogue."
Behind the scenes, information is that Flamengo received more advantageous proposals from two other sports equipment suppliers: Adidas and Puma.

Nike's contract with Flamengo could be terminated in the coming months
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo's commitment to Nike appears to be numbered. At least that's what the club's vice president of legal affairs, Adalberto Ribeiro, assures us. Flamengo still has one year left on its contract with the sportswear company.
Fla players presented the third uniform at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, 2nd
"We have a contract with the company until June 30, 2009. Flamengo intends to have its contract terminated before this deadline," said Ribeiro, who explained the main reason for the unilateral breach of the agreement.
"We're going to do this because we had contractual clauses that weren't met. One example was the delivery of sports equipment. The basketball team, for example, had to play in a different uniform," the director stated.
One sign that the relationship may be coming to an end is that on Monday, during the launch party for the club's third soccer team uniform, the sportswear company's logo was not seen in the event's publicity. Even so, Adalberto said there's a remote possibility the two parties will reach an agreement.
"There is a conflict between Flamengo and Nike, but that doesn't stop the parties from resuming dialogue. Our club issued a notice saying that the contract was not fulfilled, and the company responded by saying it did its part," said the vice-legal director in an interview with Rádio Brasil.
If the two parties cannot reach a consensus, the solution may be sought in the Sports Court. However, there is a very high fine stipulated if the contract is broken.
If the contract termination goes through, two companies have a chance of reaching an agreement with Flamengo: Adidas and Olympikus. The former has already held talks with Flamengo's board of directors and Corinthians, which is also dissatisfied with Nike.
Coach Joel Santana, once again, comes to Toró's defense
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
It's become routine. Just as happened on Saturday, after Flamengo's match against Cabofriense, Joel Santana came to the defense of Flamengo's midfielder Toró this Tuesday. According to the Flamengo coach, the player has been heavily criticized by the press.
"I don't pat players on the head. I just show them what's right and wrong. Some media outlets are turning a good guy into a criminal. This isn't right," the coach said.
Against Cabofriense, Toró received a yellow card after just two minutes on the field. He replaced Kléberson in the second half of the match, which Flamengo won 2-0. "I didn't see him doing anything to be punished," emphasized Joel Santana.
This wasn't the first time the young athlete's behavior was questioned. Toró was sent off in the Libertadores Cup match against Nacional-URU in Montevideo after shoving a ball boy. On March 16, in the derby against Botafogo, Toró was caught on television cameras kicking goalkeeper Castillo in the head.
In fact, Toró was reported on Monday by the prosecutor of the Rio de Janeiro Sports Court (TJD-RJ), André Luís Valentin, due to the problems in this classic. In addition to the midfielder, goalkeeper Bruno, defensive midfielder Jônatas and forward Obina were "framed".
"They're being harsh. It's better for me to stay away from this. My role is different. I don't understand these punishments, I'll leave that to the lawyers," concluded Joel Santana.
In a bad game, Bolognesi and Cienciano draw and Fla thanks
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Coronel Bolognesi-PER and Cienciano-PER played a very weak game this Tuesday in Tacna, in the fourth round of Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores da América. The result, as expected, ended 0-0 and helped Flamengo in its fight for the two spots in the group for the round of XNUMX of the competition.
Now, Cienciano and Flamengo both have seven points, but the Peruvians have the advantage on goal difference: 1-0. Nacional-URU is third, with six, while Coronel Bolognesi is last, with just two.
In the next round, the penultimate of the group, Cienciano faces Flamengo on April 9th in the high altitude of Cusco. On the 3rd of the same month, Coronel Bolognesi faces Nacional in Montevideo.
The first half was marked by numerous misplaced passes. Colonel Bolognesi, slightly better, "troubled" Cienciano's goal more. In his "best opportunity," Ross sent a cross-shot, and Flores saved.
The second half was a bit more exciting. Cienciano had a few chances, but goalkeeper Penny saved Coronel Bolognesi. However, the home team had the best opportunities. In the 36th minute, after a corner, Mostto played the ball, and Guizasola cleared it off the line. Ten minutes later, Ostersen hit Flores's left post.
Adidas makes proposal to Corinthians and Fla
THALES CALIPO\ From the Sports Machine, in São Paulo\
Willing to oust its main rival, Adidas may become the new sportswear supplier for Flamengo and Corinthians, the clubs with the largest fan bases in the country. According to Máquina do Esporte, the German company has already submitted a formal proposal to the duo and is awaiting a resolution to the situation with Nike to intensify negotiations.
The contract length and values, which could be up to double those currently paid by the North American company, are still being treated confidentially, as is the rapprochement between Adidas, Flamengo and Corinthians, which has not been confirmed by any of those involved.
Despite adopting a diplomatic stance in public, the two clubs and Nike are locked in a behind-the-scenes duel that began last year. Flamengo and Corinthians are dissatisfied with several aspects of the contract and have not ruled out switching partners.
Nike, for its part, states that it does not comment on contractual details of its sponsors, whether clubs, athletes, or confederations. The company also says it has a long-standing relationship with both clubs and intends to remain linked to them for a long time.
Despite this, Flamengo is the closest to parting ways with the multinational. The matter involving Nike, in fact, is only being discussed within the legal department, after the club notified its partner legally. Corinthians is still evaluating whether it will make the same decision.
Flamengo's list of complaints is extensive. The first arose after the lack of sports equipment for professional soccer players, a fact that also strained the company's ties with Corinthians last year.
Since then, the Rio de Janeiro club has still criticized the lack of its materials, such as official shirts, at points of sale, and the development of a new model especially for the basketball team, but without the approval of Flamengo's board.
The determining factor in the split with the sportswear supplier was Nike's delay in issuing a statement regarding the licensing agreement it would have signed with Warner, along the same lines as São Paulo. Without a response from its partner, the deal fell through.

Victory in Cuzco will give Flamengo a spot
To depend only on itself in the last round, Rubro-Negro cannot lose at altitude
The draw Cienciano so desperately sought against Coronel Bolognesi this Tuesday in Tacna may have been more than a positive result for Flamengo, if they can overcome Cuzco's 3.360m altitude, their limitations in away games, and the Peruvian team itself. This is because, with a victory in the match on the 9th, the Rio de Janeiro team will secure their spot in the round of 4 in Group XNUMX of the Copa Libertadores with a round to spare.
Even if Nacional defeats Bolo on the 3rd, in Montevideo, the red-black team will get the spot if it gets the three points six days later, since it will reach ten and could only be reached (or surpassed in the case of the Uruguayan team) in the last round by the Uruguayan team (which would have nine points) or Cienciano (with seven), since both face each other in the last round, on the 23rd, in Montevideo.
A draw in Cuzco is also not a bad result for Rubro-Negro, as they would only depend on a victory by any score in the last round, at Maracanã, against Coronel Bolognesi, who would already be eliminated if the defeat to Nacional was confirmed.
With the 0-0 draw in Tacna, Cienciano surpassed Flamengo for the lead in Group 4 on goal difference (3-XNUMX). Both teams have seven points, one more than Nacional, which has a great chance of taking the lead (with a game in hand) if it confirms its overwhelming favoritism in the home match on the XNUMXrd.
Thus, if there is a draw on the 9th in Cuzco, Nacional would maintain the group lead with nine points, followed by Cienciano and Flamengo, both with eight. Although the red-and-black team would, in this case, be outside the qualifying zone due to goal difference, a victory over Coronel Bolognesi on the 23rd at Maracanã would leave Flamengo with 11 points, and Nacional (nine) and Cienciano (eight) would fight each other for the other spot in Montevideo on the same day.
Even defeat would not be disastrous
A loss in Cuzco, however, would leave Flamengo in a less comfortable position, but as long as it's not a landslide, it still has a good chance. This is because Joel Santana's team would need to beat the Tacna team with a goal difference that surpasses the goal difference of Nacional (who would have nine points if they beat Coronel Bolognesi) or Cienciano (with ten). In this case, the red-and-black team, with ten points, would only be able to avoid relying on goal difference if the Cuzco team defeated the Uruguayan team away from home.

Fighting against the stigma of being a violent player, Toró takes Kleberson's place
Flamengo has played ten matches against mid-sized and smaller teams in the current Campeonato Carioca. They've won them all. Continuing their reputation for being ruthless against smaller clubs, the red-and-black club faces Friburguense at 21:45 PM this Wednesday at Maracanã. This will be the second leg of the doubleheader – Fluminense and Mesquita face off at 19:30 PM – for the sixth round of the Taça Rio.
GLOBOESPORTE.COM will be following Flamengo's game live from 21:30 p.m. on TV Globo. TV Globo will also broadcast the match from Rio de Janeiro. While all of their rivals have slipped up at least once in this Carioca against the smaller teams, Flamengo remains untouchable. The current Taça Guanabara champion has 12 points in the second half of the season and is second in Group A. Their defeat this half came in the derby against Botafogo, when Joel Santana's team entered the field with a full complement of reserves.
"Flamengo is in good form, and it's no coincidence. We worked hard in the preseason and made a significant investment. It will be a tough match, and we need the three points to reach the semifinals," declares the Flamengo coach.
According to the coaching staff's plan, the team needs six more points out of the nine they will be competing for to secure a place in the next stage.
This time, unlike previous rounds, no players will be rested. The only absence will be Kleberson, suspended for his third yellow card. Toró will replace him. The player is going through a difficult time due to his violent behavior on the field.
"They want to portray him as a violent player. And Toró isn't that," defends his teammate Souza.
Female refereeing is the attraction
In the final training session before the match, the red-and-black players played the traditional "rachão" (a type of soccer practice). Forward Diego Tardelli sprained his ankle and will be re-evaluated this Wednesday to see if he'll be fit to sit on the bench.
Third in Group B with seven points, Friburguense is playing its last games to try to qualify for the semifinals. Coach Cleimar Rocha's team lost to Caxias in the last round and needs to recover. The starting lineup includes a former Flamengo player: midfielder Elan, who has had few opportunities with Flamengo's first team.
This Wednesday's match will feature a curious twist. For the first time in this Campeonato Carioca, the refereeing will be entirely female. Simone Xavier will be the referee, with Fernanda Lisboa and Lilian da Silva as assistants. The fourth referee will be Sulamir de Souza.
- I think it's cool. I hope they whistle well - says Flamengo fan Souza.
Souza praises his attacking partner
The red-black number nine hopes that Marcinho continues his good form in the team.
Together, Souza and Marcinho have scored four goals in Fla's last two games
After a dark winter, Flamengo's attack, now formed by Souza and Marcinho, finally seems to have gotten back on track. In the last two games, the duo has been responsible for the team's four goals. The most important thing for Flamengo is that the forwards are in sync on and off the field.
Souza was full of praise for Marcinho and hopes to continue his strong performance for a long time. The duo is confirmed for this Wednesday's match against Friburguense.
"He's got a lot of quality and is scoring goals. I hope he continues like this. But everyone who played with me has potential," says Souza, noting that the next two games are important, as they could lead Flamengo to the Rio Cup semifinals.

Toró has been receiving criticism for his poor performances and violent tackles
Joel Santana avoided commenting once or twice on the indictment of four Flamengo players by the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (TJD-RJ) for the incidents during the derby against Botafogo. But the coach gradually made clear his dissatisfaction with the treatment of the Flamengo players.
Constantly reminding Flamengo of Flamengo's significant investment this season and praising the club's preparations, Joel came to Toró's defense. Since his ejection against Nacional, the midfielder has been subjected to a kind of mob lynching. Recently, Carlos Augusto Montenegro called the Flamengo fan a coward and a criminal after a disagreement with Botafogo goalkeeper Castillo.
The coach spoke to Toró and reprimanded him for his actions. According to the Flamengo manager, it was fatherly advice to his son.
"They want to turn Toró into a criminal. And he's nothing like that. He may have made a mistake, but are they going to take him off the field for 120 days? Everything bad that happens in football now is the boy's fault. Talk is too easy," says Joel, without hiding his irritation.
In addition to Toró, goalkeeper Bruno, midfielder Jônatas, and forward Obina will also be tried. Joel complained about how situations are blown out of proportion when Flamengo is in the spotlight.
"Here at Flamengo, a comma becomes a sentence, and a sentence becomes a book. Rio de Janeiro soccer is very rigid compared to other sports. I just want to play in a normal championship," he says.
Ibson wins flag: 'Heart is sad'

Ibson poses in front of the flag made by Flamengo fans in his honor
Following Bruno, this Tuesday it was Ibson's turn to be honored by Flamengo fans with a flag bearing his image. But unlike the goalkeeper, the midfielder will have to wait to see his face in the stands at Maracanã.
The debut will only happen when—and if—the player renews his contract with the Red-Blacks. His current contract ends on June 30th, and negotiations with Porto are considered very difficult.
- The heart is sad because the situation cannot be resolved - says Ibson.
The player will try to anticipate the flag's debut:
- I'll keep it very carefully, but I want to convince people to put it in the stadium before I renew.
Unlike Bruno, the midfielder didn't cry over the tribute. He was flattered, but only complained about one detail:
- I'm more handsome than what's on this flag.
The next and final person to be honored by the Flamengo fans will be striker Souza. According to the fans, he embodies the spirit of the Flamengo fan base.
Even mountain climbers are against football at altitude
Waldemar Niclevicz, who climbs 8-meter peaks, thinks football at altitude is unfair.
Zé Gonzalez From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in São Paulo
In 1995, Waldemar Niclevicz reached the top of Everest, at 8.848 meters.
Even those accustomed to high-altitude physical activity oppose holding soccer matches in high-altitude cities. Mountaineer Waldemar Niclevicz, who has climbed icy mountains over 8 meters six times, finds it unfair that matches are scheduled for high altitudes.
Recently, FIFA determined that matches at altitudes above 2.500 meters are not permitted without a prior acclimatization period. For matches at 2.500 meters, FIFA requires three days of acclimatization; if the venue is 2.750 meters, at least a week; for venues above 3.000 meters, the organization states that "as a general rule, matches are not played at these venues, unless there is a 15-day acclimatization period."
"FIFA is absolutely right. It's unfair for those who have to climb so high to play without making this adjustment. But football clubs, with games from Wednesday to Sunday, don't have time for this. It practically becomes a natural doping for those who play at home up there," says Niclevicz.
FIFA is more than right! It's unfair for those who have to climb so high and play without adapting. Waldemar Niclevicz, mountain climber, on football at altitude.
However, for now, the rules only apply to international matches. Clubs, on the other hand, continue to play at higher altitudes in the Copa Libertadores. This year, Santos lost to San José (BOL) in Oruro, 3.700 meters above sea level, and Fluminense drew with LDU (EQU) in Quito, at 2.850 meters. Before the end of the qualifying phase, Flamengo will face Cienciano (PER) at 3.360 meters in Cuzco, and Cruzeiro will visit Real Potosí (BOL) at 4.090 meters in Potosí.
Waldemar at the base of Makalu, Nepal
For his next mission, climbing Makalu—the fifth-highest mountain in the world, in Nepal, at 8.463 meters—Waldemar Niclevicz chose the city of Potosí, Bolivia, as the location for a ten-day acclimatization period. People living at sea level have fewer red blood cells, which are responsible for absorbing oxygen. People living at altitude have more red blood cells because the air is thinner. When a person ascends to very high altitudes, the few red blood cells have difficulty absorbing oxygen, which is in lower concentrations.
"The adaptation is to increase the number of these red blood cells. Regardless of physical fitness, each body has a different oxygen absorption rate depending on where it lives," says the climber.
On one of his adventures – he has already climbed Everest and K2, two of the most dangerous peaks in the world – Niclevicz reports that he saw residents of very high places – over 5 meters – playing soccer.
- I just watched. I wasn't crazy enough to take the risk... - he jokes.
Tips: B complex, vitamin E and lots of water\ Since clubs don't have time to acclimatize to the altitude, he gives some tips to try to avoid problems.\
- It is advisable to take a B complex to increase the number of red blood cells, stay well hydrated, as the blood becomes thicker, and also take vitamin E to thin the blood and not compromise circulation in the extremities of the body - he adds.

Flamengo and Friburguense face off this Wednesday at 21:45 p.m. at Maracanã for the sixth round of the Taça Rio. If the tradition of this matchup holds, the red-and-blacks can already celebrate a goal in advance. In all the meetings between the clubs, Brazil's Most Beloved has always scored. Furthermore, the club from the mountainous region has never beaten Flamengo.
Flamengo's record at Maracanã against Friburguense also works in its favor: In five matches, they have four wins, one draw, and 15 goals scored (an average of three per game). What's more, in the last 20 matches at the World's Biggest Stadium, Flamengo has always found the net.
Present at the LANCE! newsroom to participate in the program Lance em Dia, on Rádio LANCE!, defender Ronaldo Angelim tried not to risk predicting goals for this Wednesday's game.
"That question should be asked of the forwards (laughs). In times of trouble, I try to help. But among our defenders, the one who's been scoring a lot of goals is Thiago (Sales). I expect a tough game. Fluminense, for example, had a lot of work against them."
Unaware of the statistics, Friburguense coach Cleimar Rocha has a single goal for the game: victory. The team from the Serrana region, which is third in Group B of the Taça Rio with seven points (five behind Vasco, in second place), is playing its last chances of qualifying for the semifinals.
Rocha also warned of the need for Flamengo, second in Group A with 12 points, to win, as they only have three points more than Duque de Caxias.
"Of course, if we don't win, we'll lose our chance of qualifying. It will be a very difficult game. Flamengo has a very qualified team, and they also need to win, as Duque de Caxias has nine points and is right behind them," explained Cleimar, who highlighted the advancement of the full-backs as the red-and-black's main asset.

The gift is guaranteed, but the flag will only go to the stands if Ibson, who has no uncertain future at the club and could return to Porto in July, signs his contract renewal with Flamengo.
"Since she'll only go to the stands after the signing, I hope this gets resolved soon. My heart is sad because this issue won't be resolved. I don't want to think about what's going to happen, especially since my mind is only focused on Flamengo," he concluded.
