"There's no stadium like this in any other country. Great players have played here. This is my first time here, but I watched Maracanã on television when I was little. Now I'm going to play here. I dreamed of playing at Maracanã, but I never thought I'd achieve this dream," says attacking midfielder Sawa, a Japanese player who has played in South America for seven years.
Coach Franco Navarro follows the same line and takes the opportunity to praise the pitch.
"It's a wonderful, historic stadium. And it's in very good condition. The players are happy, as they're a young group."

Called a "father figure" by all his players, coach Joel Santana made a point of emphasizing this Tuesday that all his players are focused on one goal and do not get upset when they are not selected or included in a Flamengo match.

GENEVA - Represented by Flamengo, five Brazilian clubs are filing a lawsuit against FIFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. São Paulo, Cruzeiro, Santos, and Fluminense, as well as Flamengo itself, are demanding that FIFA ban Copa Libertadores games at altitudes above 2,750 meters.
"FIFA banned international matches above this altitude. Why do clubs have to play in these conditions?" asked Pedro Trengrouse, who led Flamengo's case at the Lausanne-based court.
The decision to go to court came after FIFA argued that it could not prevent the Libertadores from taking place because it is a CONMEBOL competition. For Brazilian clubs, FIFA is responsible for the competition, as the winner qualifies for the Club World Cup, organized by FIFA in Japan.
According to Flamengo president Márcio Braga, FIFA has medical documents confirming that playing above 2,750 meters can cause player death. "Who will be responsible if this happens?" he attacked.
Braga also attacked Nicola Leoz, president of CONMEBOL. "He voted to ban international matches in the FIFA Executive Board's decision. Now, he's not complying in the very region where he's president," he criticized.
Flamengo will play Cienciano, from Cuzco, Peru, in a stadium at an altitude of 3,400 meters. Today, the team faces the Peruvians at Maracanã Stadium. But the club's strategy is to get the court to grant an injunction canceling the location of the matches taking place in April.
The club officials expect a response by mid-March. "A high-ranking FIFA official told us that this would be a case of Flamengo versus the rest of the world. It won't be quite like that," Trengrouse said, assuring that he also filed the lawsuit on behalf of the other Brazilian clubs mentioned.
Flamengo tried to secure the UN's support on the issue, but the organization refused to comment. This Wednesday, Braga will meet with UEFA president Michel Platini to discuss the matter. The goal is to win the Europeans' support so that the FIFA law also applies to clubs. On Thursday, Braga will travel to Zurich.
CBF president Ricardo Teixeira reportedly promised to organize a meeting between FIFA president Joseph Blatter and Braga. As of Tuesday afternoon, however, the meeting had not been confirmed.

Braga also denied that the refereeing had any influence on Flamengo in the Guanabara Cup final. "The team won because they were infinitely better than Botafogo. It was an absolutely normal game," said the president, who said he watched the match online while in Europe. "These things only happen to Botafogo," he quipped.
Braga admitted that, from now on, the club's priority will be the Copa Libertadores, as they are already in the final of the Campeonato Carioca.
