Fla announces that it is in a hurry to resolve Joel's situation
Vice President of Football wants to decide today whether the coach stays or leaves
WITHOUT JOEL SANTANA, with the professional players in the top row, the photo that brought together the Flamengo teams that were state champions in 2007
Márcio Tavares
Despite the back and forth and some tension, the historic photo was taken. Flamengo brought together its youth, junior, and professional teams, all state champions, but someone was missing: although he wasn't managing the main team in the state championship, which was led by Ney Franco, Joel Santana wasn't in the spotlight, and his absence was the center of attention. And to ensure Joel doesn't miss out on the picture next year, the Flamengo board is mobilizing to quickly finalize his contract renewal.
"Joel didn't tell me he had any offers from outside," said vice president of football Kleber Leite. "Since the signings we'll make for 2008 will be few and well-targeted, and will depend on the coach's recommendations, we intend to resolve this situation quickly. I've scheduled a meeting with him for tomorrow (today). We want him to stay, and I intend to resolve his situation tomorrow. We'll make every effort to keep Joel, but within the club's means. No crazy decisions."
Technician will have a pineapple to peel: Roger
By revealing the day before yesterday that he had received offers from clubs in Portugal and Spain, as well as an inquiry from Japan that failed to attract him, Joel created an unexpected situation, as the hope was that his contract renewal would be automatic. But the offers Joel announced imposed an unexpected barrier.
"Joel knows the club's possibilities better than anyone. We need to make a quick decision because he has to lead the team's project for 2008, which could be a spectacular year for Flamengo," adds Kleber.
Flamengo's biggest problem, however, isn't deciding which players to sign. It's whether it's worth investing the equivalent of US$500 in Roger. The club has already formally informed Atlético-PR of its intention to pay the same amount for Cristian, but regarding Roger, the decision-making power will rest primarily with the coach.
If Joel stays, Roger's tenure may be easier. Otherwise, it would be risky to take on the responsibility of retaining a star player with a high salary and who requires an even higher investment to retain him, without the approval of the new coach, who may be against the presence of a player who has spent the last few months being called a "slipper." For Kleber, the solution could come from a partnership he intends to establish with Corinthians:
"We have a good relationship with Corinthians, and by establishing a partnership, it would be easy to resolve the issue of the amount. The announcement of whether or not we want to keep him must be made by Friday. But for that, we depend on the coach's opinion."
Without their coach, who yesterday dedicated himself practically to establishing TV Joel in São Paulo, participating in live programs, the players trained under light rain. Toró, called up to the Olympic team, became the center of attention. Midfielder, midfielder, and striker, he defined in an unusual way the rise he experienced this year at Gávea.
"In two words, I can say who I owe everything to here at Flamengo: Joel Santana and Ronaldo Torres. Three months ago, I was hearing that I was leaving, that I was going on loan. Today, thanks to Joel, who was like a father to me, I'm on the Olympic team," Toró acknowledged.
While the player celebrated his call-up, the fans promised to party as long as the funds last. On Friday morning, the plan is to carry the enormous flag to Corcovado Mountain.
STATE FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIP
With a goal from defender Régis at 9:03 of the second half, Poker/Petrópolis/Ikinha defeated Flamengo 1-0 yesterday at the Olaria gymnasium in the semifinals of the State Futsal Championship. The two teams will play again on Friday at 21 p.m. in Petrópolis, with the home team holding the advantage of a draw. Flamengo needs to win in regulation and extra time.

Toró admits surprise at being called up to the Olympic team

Toró became a starter after the arrival of Joel Santana
One of the key players in coach Joel Santana's scheme, Toró missed last Sunday's match against Atlético-PR. On Monday, the defensive midfielder was both surprised and delighted to be called up to the Olympic team, which will play against the Brazilian Championship team.
"I've always had this dream of playing for the Brazilian national team. It happened so quickly. I didn't expect it, no one expected it. I'm very happy, I've been dedicating myself and I'll dedicate myself even more to stay on the national team," Toró told Rádio Globo.
The player made a point of sharing his positive moment with two people: coach Joel Santana and fitness coach Ronaldo Torres. Toró recalls the difficult times he faced at the beginning of the season, when he had no chance in the starting lineup, but with dedication, he earned his place in the red-and-black squad.
"I owe this moment I'm experiencing to two fundamental people: Joel Santana and Ronaldo Torres. I was sad, people doubted my football, but that's a thing of the past. I intend to continue this good rhythm and give my all to represent Flamengo well on the national team," the player concluded.
Léo Moura: "The unity and will of the group helped a lot"
One of Flamengo's standout performers in the 2007 Brazilian Championship, right-back Leonardo Moura emphasized the importance of group unity in the team's major turnaround in the competition. Flamengo, which was in the relegation zone, made a spectacular comeback and secured a spot in the 2008 Copa Libertadores.
"The unity and willingness of the group helped a lot. Here, everyone pushes and is pushed, and that's important for the squad. Everyone here is friends, and that made our work much easier," the fullback highlighted.
Competing with Joílson, ex-Botafogo and Coelho, from Atlético Mineiro for the award of best right-back in the competition, Léo Moura received more good news in training this afternoon: he is the winner of Placar magazine's Bola de Prata.
"I'm very happy with this recognition. Awards are a result of hard work on the field. I dedicate this achievement to my Flamengo teammates," concluded the Flamengo player.

Professional and youth players are lined up
Before the start of the recreational training session yesterday at Gávea, the players gathered to take a photo to celebrate Flamengo's victory as Rio de Janeiro champions in the Children's, Youth, Junior, and Professional categories. Around 100 players posed alongside the coaching staff, and the celebration was intense. Not even the light rain falling on the pitch could dampen the champions' spirits.
One of the professional players in the campaign to win the Carioca this year, over Botafogo, right-back Leonardo Moura made an assessment of the 2007 season, which he considered the best of his career.
"I'm very happy, it was my best year as a professional. I went through a difficult time in the middle of the Brazilian Championship, but I recovered and finished the season well," said the full-back, who considered the arrival of coach Joel Santana to be fundamental for his improvement in performance: "Joel arrived with a new scheme, taking over a discredited group and managed to solve the problems," he praised.
Léo Moura also called for the maintenance of the core squad that secured this Libertadores spot. He reiterated that he feels at home at Flamengo and has no desire to leave the club. His contract doesn't expire until December 2009, but due to his strong season, the player has attracted interest from several clubs abroad.
Bruno is a priority in Gávea
The board will do everything to ensure the red-black number 1 stays at the club in 2008

Bruno is the team's security in goal. His stay could be hampered by MSI.
As usual, Flamengo will have a turbulent end to the year, but unlike other seasons, the initial battle won't be focused on signings. Keeping some standout players, whose contracts will expire at the end of the year, has become a priority for the board. With this in mind, vice president of football Kleber Leite has already decided where to start: in goal.
The negotiation, however, won't be easy. Everything has already been agreed between goalkeeper Bruno and Flamengo, but MSI, the investment group that holds the player's economic rights, intends to profit from the number 1's strong season. For this reason, there is no intention of renewing his loan to Flamengo. While the saga lasted approximately a month mid-year, this time the story is likely to be no different.
"If it were up to Flamengo alone, this wouldn't be a soap opera, as it would only have one chapter. It's natural for investors to want to make money with Bruno. We have no criticism of that. But in today's football, the player's will is very influential, and since he's on our side, we're more than halfway there. I believe he has a better than 50% chance of staying here next year," explained the director.
The board is trying to establish a partnership for Flamengo to acquire 50% of Bruno's economic rights, valued at approximately €2 million (approximately R$5,5 million). If negotiations don't progress, Kleber will attempt another form of agreement, but declined to reveal which.
The player's agent, Eduardo Uram, in an interview with Rádio Brasil, preferred not to reveal what Bruno's future will be.
"Flamengo made an offer to acquire Bruno's economic rights. The idea is for him to sign for four years. But it's natural for investors to want a return on their investment. Now it depends on the market. This uncertainty is making the player very anxious, as he doesn't know where his family will live, where his daughter will study. I promised that everything will be resolved by Christmas, so he can have peace of mind at the beginning of next year," he said.
Accustomed to having the power to decide matches with his hands, Bruno is now in the hands of investors.
Race against time by Cristian
One less problem for the team's formation in 2008. Vice President of Football Kleber Leite also announced yesterday that he had sent Atlético-PR a document proving Flamengo's intention to keep Cristian. Flamengo had until the 30th of this month to express this desire. Now, the race is against time, as, by December 31st at the latest, the directors must deposit US$500 into the Paraná club's account.
Cristian arrived at Flamengo in July of this year, in a deal that included midfielder Claiton's transfer to Furacão. The funds to settle the deal will likely come from Petrobras's frozen share, which was released last week.
Another issue to be resolved is the acquisition of the rights to midfielder Roger. Kleber said he hasn't started negotiations yet, out of respect for Corinthians' current situation, which is still fighting to avoid relegation.
The share of this sponsorship, as Kleber Leite himself admitted, is due at any moment. Of the R$14,5 million Flamengo is entitled to receive, only R$4,5 million will reach the club's coffers, as the remaining R$10 million will already be used to repay loans taken out during the year. The expectation is that by the end of the year, salaries and bonuses for the Rio de Janeiro title and qualification for the Copa Libertadores will be paid.
To stay or not to stay, that is the question
The club's board will decide today whether Joel will continue as coach for the 2008 Libertadores.
Thiago Bokel

Joel and vice-president of football Kleber Leite will have a conversation to decide the fate of the technical command.
Qualification for the Libertadores, once seen as a summer dream, has finally come true, and the man largely responsible for Flamengo's significant improvement in performance will have his "day off" today. Coach Joel Santana, who was absent from the club yesterday as he was dealing with personal matters in São Paulo, will meet with vice-president of football Kleber Leite to discuss his future and that of the Red-Blacks.
The news was confirmed by the manager himself, who intends to decide once and for all who will lead the team next year.
Kleber said he was unaware of any interest in Joel from clubs abroad, such as Portugal, Spain and Japan.
"Joel himself hasn't told me anything about offers from other clubs. I want him to stay, and we'll do everything possible within our means to make that happen. I'm going to schedule a meeting with him for tomorrow (today), where we'll decide on this situation quickly. If Joel is our coach in 2008, great, but if by chance, he isn't, we have to start planning as soon as possible," said Kleber Leite.
On Monday, the coach, who had already admitted to receiving an inquiry from Vegalta Sendai, a Japanese club where he worked last year, said he also had offers from one of Portugal's three biggest clubs and a Spanish club. The uncertainty could be detrimental, as Kleber wants to expedite signings for next year's Copa Libertadores.
Joel is very loved by the group, proof of this is the team captain, Fábio Luciano, who made an appeal for this decision to be positive.
"I won't be happy if he leaves. I really like Joel and one of the reasons I renewed was because of him. I want to work with him in 2008," he added.
As the board has already expressed its desire to have the coach, and the fans treat him like an idol, the emotional appeal could weigh on Joel's final decision.
The man who spent three months racking his brains trying to get the team out of the hole and into the sky will now have one more problem to solve: mistreat or soothe the fans' hearts.
Petrópolis wins the first in the semifinal of the State Futsal Championship
A 1-0 victory over Flamengo leaves the team from the mountains close to the final

The Petrópolis player tries to get away from the strong marking of the red-black team in the match at the Olaria gym
Petrópolis took the lead in the State Futsal semifinals. Yesterday, at the Olaria gymnasium, they defeated Flamengo 1-0, with a goal from Régis, and now need a draw in normal time to reach the final.
Rubro-Negro has the obligation to win in normal time and then in extra time in the second game, which will be held on Friday, at 21 pm, at the UCP gym, in Petrópolis.
With a strong pressing approach, Flamengo managed to hold off Petrópolis's early momentum, which plays strongly early in matches. Both teams played the ball consciously and didn't give their opponents any space.
The first chance to score only came with 6:23 left, when Petrópolis' Jorginho started from his own half, dribbled past goalkeeper Breno, but shot wide.
For the red-and-black team, Antony was the standout performer, having three scoring opportunities. The second half started in a similar fashion, with both defenses clearly having the upper hand. But the skilled winger Régis found space and opened the scoring in the 9:19 minute, putting Petrópolis ahead.
From then on, with no other option, Flamengo accelerated the game and pressed forward, but rushed the shot. Michel's shot was one of those shots, forcing a great save from Petrópolis goalkeeper Douglas. In fact, he was the standout performer in the final minutes, single-handedly holding off Flamengo's attack.
The red-and-blacks' late pressure could have been exerted from the start of the game. Excessive caution hurt the team, which played without its main finisher, Anthony, for much of the game.
The other semifinal will bring together Canto do Rio and Teresópolis and will also begin to be played on Friday, with the first game in Niterói.

Flamengo defends the lead in the State Basketball Championship
The team faces Municipal and, if they win, they remain leaders.

Recovered from injury, point guard Fred is a hope for Flamengo
These opposites will meet today at 20 p.m. at the Municipal gymnasium. While Flamengo leads the Carioca Basketball Championship with 11 wins in 12 games, the home team, Municipal, has not won a single match and sits last in the qualifying round. Everything indicates that Flamengo will face Fluminense in the semifinals.
This will be Flamengo's penultimate match, and if they win these last two games, they will qualify first, followed by Vasco. The top scorer and one of the red-and-black team's standouts, winger Marcelinho, believes that facing a theoretically weaker opponent doesn't guarantee victory.
Seriousness\ "If you look at the position of the two teams in the table, the match may seem calm, but that doesn't mean we can lose focus. We have to stay focused to avoid any kind of surprise."\
Reinforcing his player's speech, the coach of the red-black team, Paulo Chupeta, stated that the match, contrary to what it seems, will not be that easy.
"Theoretically, Municipal is a much easier opponent than Fluminense, but Vasco played against them and had a tough time. So we can't make any mistakes because no match is won before it's over," said the Flamengo coach.
Municipal will take to the court for its final appearance in the Carioca Championship. An amateur in the truest sense of the word, coach Marquinhos hopes at least some of his players will be used by other clubs next season.

Flamengo: Partnership with Timão
Mengão will join forces with Corinthians. Fans negotiate with the Archdiocese.
Rio - A partnership with Corinthians is the first step for Flamengo to fight for the 2008 Copa Libertadores title. While the red-black board secretly aligned the union of forces with the São Paulo club, the fans also made their pact, but with the Archdiocese of Rio.
The partnership with Corinthians, a topic for next year, is being kept confidential. The partnership with the Archdiocese is not. Yesterday, the fans requested permission for 250 Flamengo fans to visit Christ the Redeemer on Friday morning, to cover it with a giant Flamengo flag.
On the same day, the board will be running out of time to pay Corinthians $500 if it wants to keep Roger. But talks between vice president of football Kléber Leite and the São Paulo club's president, Andrés Sanches, are going so well that the player's stay could be secured through a trade that would represent the first step in the partnership.
"We have to define Roger's situation by the 30th. But, with the partnership we're building, the money might not even be necessary... It's an old project, from 95. There's a chance we could forge a great partnership. It would be the union of the two most popular forces in this country," said Kléber Leite.
With or without a partnership, with or without a visit to Cristo, the priority of the red-black board is to guarantee the permanence of goalkeeper Bruno, whose contract expires in December.
"I'm trying to work out some 'engineering' so we can approach investors to acquire 50 percent of Bruno's economic rights," said Flamengo's vice president of football.
Kléber has already resolved another issue. He reported sending Atlético-PR a letter yesterday informing them that Flamengo will pay the $500 by the end of the year for the permanent release of midfielder Cristian.
Today, the director is meeting with Joel Santana in an attempt to renew the coach's contract. "I hope he stays, and we'll do everything we can to make that happen," Kléber said, assuring that he will pay everything he owes the players by the end of the year, even though they haven't yet received their October salaries.
Toró's 'icing on the cake'
The call-up to a friendly match with the Olympic team on the 9th was the icing on the cake. Toró was already overjoyed with his Libertadores berth and, satisfied with his early Christmas present, dreamed of nothing else. Upon being called up by Dunga, he was overcome with emotion and dedicated the feat to Joel Santana.
"I dedicate this to Joel, for everything he's done for me. I can only thank him. He was a father to me. When I talk about Joel, I get emotional," said the 21-year-old, unable to contain his excitement.
The joy of being called up did not erase the sadness of the recent past, when Toró was not registered for the Copa Libertadores and was almost released from Flamengo.
"Three months ago, I never thought I'd be on the Olympic team. In fact, I didn't even think I'd be a starter for Flamengo," the supporter admitted, surprised by the rapid change in his life.
Toró was even more surprised by the absence of teammate Renato Augusto's name from Dunga's squad. He joined Kléber Leite and Joel Santana, who were also unhappy with their midfielder's omission: "I'm sad for Renato Augusto, but he was happy for me. So much so that he called me... It won't be long before he's called up."
Businessman says Bruno's stay at Flamengo is very difficult
Rio - This Tuesday, in an interview with Rádio Brasil, businessman Eduardo Uram stated that it is difficult for goalkeeper Bruno to remain in the Flamengo team in 2008. As the number 1 is on loan at no cost to the Gávea club, the group of investors who hold the player's economic rights want to negotiate him with European football in order to recover the money spent on his signing.
Flamengo and Bruno have already agreed on a potential contract renewal. However, the club now needs to reach an agreement to try to obtain part of Bruno's rights. If this happens, the number 1 will sign a four-year contract.
"But the first rounds of talks weren't encouraging. Investors are adamant. The player's value is high," revealed Eduardo Uram.
Bruno cost Atlético Mineiro two million euros (about R$5,5 million). Now, according to reports, they want something around four million euros (about R$11 million).

Kleber Leite says Bruno's renewal with Fla is a priority\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - After going through a 'soap opera' in the middle of the year to have his stay at Gávea resolved, goalkeeper Bruno, whose contract with Flamengo ends on December 31, is about to watch it all again.\ The plot is the same: the group of investors who hold the player's federation rights aim to negotiate him with European football, while the red-blacks will try to find a way to persuade them to extend the contract so that the athlete can play in the Copa Libertadores da América.\
For president Kléber Leite, Bruno's contract renewal is the board's top priority regarding the squad. "Bruno is our priority. We are putting together a financial plan to enable the purchase of 50% of his economic rights from investors," said the club's president in an interview with Tupi radio.
Kléber Leite, however, admits that negotiations could be complicated and could last several weeks. "There could be a drama, yes. It doesn't depend solely on us, because if that were the case, everything would be resolved. But we understand the investors' position, whose main objective is profit, and I'm optimistic that our proposal will be accepted," he declared.
Still on the subject of the squad, Kléber Leite stated that Flamengo will inform Paraná Clube of its intention to pay the 500 thousand dollars defined for the acquisition of midfielder Cristian's rights permanently.
Reappearance - Without the presence of coach Joel Santana, who is in São Paulo to participate in a TV program, the Flamengo squad reappeared on Tuesday afternoon, in Gávea.
The day was marked by joy after securing a spot in the Copa Libertadores. Before the activities, official photos were taken of the state champions in all categories, with players from the youth, junior, and professional teams gathering on the field. Besides Joel, those absent from Gávea on Tuesday were forward Souza and Argentine Colace, who were released to deal with personal matters.
Flamengo wants to buy Bruno and businessman rules out 'soap opera'\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - With a spot in the next Copa Libertadores secured, Flamengo's board is beginning to plan its 2008 squad. Renewing goalkeeper Bruno's contract, which ends on December 31, is a priority. Therefore, the directors are considering the possibility of presenting a proposal to purchase the player's federation rights, which belong to a group of businessmen. The player's agent, Eduardo Uram, said he wouldn't want the goalkeeper's renewal to become a soap opera. "Bruno wants to settle some matters involving his personal life, such as his children's schooling for next year and even his housing. That's why I promised the player that I'll work hard to ensure the decision about the club he'll play for in 2008 is made quickly. Flamengo is interested in acquiring the player's federation rights so they can present a contract renewal proposal longer than the three months agreed upon this year. Bruno really likes Flamengo and is excited about the possibility of playing in the next Copa Libertadores. That's why I'm optimistic," said Uram.
Bruno has played for Atlético-MG and Corinthians in Brazilian football, but it was at Flamengo that he managed to establish himself as a starter and gain national recognition.
Runner-up is not Flamengo's goal\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Flamengo achieved its goal in the Brazilian Championship: a spot in the next Copa Libertadores. That's why the team at Gávea is thinking that the break could start today. Even though they still have one last Brasileirão match on Sunday, against Náutico at Aflitos Stadium, Flamengo has 61 points, and could still finish as runner-up. To do so, they just need a win and hope for a stumble from Santos, who host Fluminense at Vila Belmiro. But the runner-up finish is something everyone at Flamengo downplays, starting with coach Joel Santana. "Our goal in this Brazilian Championship was achieved on Sunday, with the victory over Atlético Paranaense, which earned us a spot in the Copa Libertadores. Therefore, we no longer have to worry about whether or not we'll be runners-up. The most important thing was the show of strength we put in, moving out of the relegation zone straight into the Copa Libertadores. Regardless of what happens in this final round, everyone should applaud Flamengo's campaign in this edition," said Joel Santana.
The players 'bought' the coach's message and insist there's no thought of finishing second. "Our goal has always been to get as many points as possible and see where we'll finish. We have an important game against Náutico, and we'll go for the three points. Then we'll see if we finish second or third. The most important thing was qualifying for the Libertadores," commented midfielder Ibson.
For defender Fábio Luciano, who was considered one of the main drivers of the team's surge in performance and recently renewed his contract for another season, the match against Náutico should be taken seriously. But he also downplayed the runner-up finish.
"Our goal has been achieved: securing a spot in the Copa Libertadores. And we projected this when we were in the relegation zone and no one believed in Flamengo. But against Náutico, we'll be just as serious, and our goal is to win and end the competition in the best possible way. Especially since there are other clubs competing with Náutico and needing our commitment. What I can say is that we'll fight for this, not for runner-up, because that doesn't depend solely on our own strength," said Fábio Luciano.
The squad, which had Monday off, began preparing for the match against Náutico on Tuesday, but the team's final lineup is expected to be finalized at Thursday's training session. However, midfielder Toró, who served a suspension against Atlético-PR, is certain to return to the starting lineup.

It's still not certain that Bruno will continue at Fla, says businessman
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
One of the best goalkeepers in the Brazilian Championship and a fan favorite for Flamengo, Bruno still doesn't know if he'll remain at Gávea in 2008 for the Copa Libertadores. According to businessman Eduardo Uram, who is responsible for the goalkeeper's career, everything will depend on the offers received by the investment fund that holds the rights to the athlete (MSI).
Goalkeeper Bruno's continued presence on Flamengo's 2008 team is under threat. READ MORE ABOUT FLAMENGO. "Flamengo has made an offer to acquire Bruno's federative and economic rights. The idea is for him to sign a four-year contract. But it's natural for investors to want a return on their investment. The businessman said he hopes the situation will be resolved by December.
"This all causes a lot of anxiety for the player. He doesn't know where his family will live, where his daughter will study. I promised him that everything will be resolved by Christmas, so he can have peace of mind at the beginning of next year," he added.
Flamengo midfielder celebrates call-up to Olympic team
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo midfielder Toró was one of the 22 players named to the Olympic squad by coach Dunga on Monday. The team will play a friendly on the 9th against a combined team of the best players in the Brazilian Championship at João Havalenge Stadium, known as Engenhão, in Rio de Janeiro.
The player celebrated the call-up, remembering the people who helped him in his still short career, especially coach Joel Santana, who made him a permanent member of the team in the red-black run that ended with qualification for the 2008 Copa Libertadores.
"I've always had the full support of my family throughout my journey, ever since I took my first steps with a ball. I thank them, first and foremost. To top it all off, I have a group at Flamengo that I consider my family too, including a coach who gives me a lot of support. I also owe this call-up a lot to Joel. It's a special day, and I hope to repay Dunga's faith in my football," he said, through his press office.
Flamengo coach demands Renato Augusto's presence in the Olympic team
FROM UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
On Monday, coach Dunga named the Olympic squad that will face the Brazilian Championship team in a commemorative match on December 9th at the Engenhão stadium. From Flamengo, only defensive midfielder Toró was included. However, Flamengo coach Joel Santana criticized the non-call-up of midfielder Renato Augusto, the Gávea club's biggest revelation last year.
"Not to take our side, but he had to be remembered. He's a unique player who can suddenly change the course of a match," said the manager in an interview with the Arena program on the SporTV channel.
Joel also recalled the comparison he made about two weeks ago between Renato Augusto and Edmundo. "I said that and was misinterpreted. I was referring to the early days of their careers. And they have very similar characteristics. Besides their technique, they have a lot of strength and vigor," the coach explained.
After being sidelined for nearly two months due to a right thigh injury, Renato Augusto returned to action at the end of October. He gradually regained his place in Flamengo's starting lineup and eventually replaced Maxi Biancucchi in the 1-0 victory over Santos on the 11th at Maracanã. On Sunday, at the same stadium, the midfielder was instrumental in the 2-0 victory over Atlético-PR. He scored the first goal and also provided the assist for Juan's second.

Fla rehearses partnership with Corinthians
Kléber Leite doesn't talk about the details, but praises the president of the São Paulo club
Eduardo Peixoto
Kléber Leite, Flamengo director
The country's two most popular clubs may merge in 2008. The boards of Flamengo and Corinthians have been in constant talks to undertake a major marketing project next year.
Rubro-Negro's vice-president of football, Kléber Leite, does not want to go into details because the São Paulo team still has decisive games to confirm its permanence in the First Division of the Brazilian Championship.
- I spoke with (Corinthians president) Andrés Sanches and we are going to unite Flamengo and Corinthians next year.
It will be something very positive, an idea I've had since I became president of Flamengo, in 1995 - says Kléber.
The red-black director took the opportunity to say that he hopes the São Paulo club remains in the elite:
- It would be an aberration for Corinthians to be in the Second Division. I would never root for that to happen.
Colace stays in Gávea until July

Colace at Flamengo training, in Gávea
According to CBF records, Colace's contract ends on November 30th. But anyone who thinks he's out of Flamengo is mistaken. The midfielder traveled to Argentina on Tuesday to renew his work visa for another three months.
Flamengo received a fax from Estudiantes confirming the player's loan until July. The new contract, which was already ready, will then be registered with the CBF.
Signed at the end of August, Colace has yet to play 90 minutes for Flamengo. He came on in the final minutes of a few matches, except for the derby against Vasco. However, despite coming on in the 11th minute, he was sent off shortly after and lost points to Joel Santana. With Jaílton suspended, the match against Náutico next Sunday could be his first real chance for the Rubro-Negro.
Joel celebrates at Diogo Nogueira's show
Much hounded by Flamengo fans, coach says he wants to stay at the club. Thiago Dias. After securing a spot in the 2008 Copa Libertadores, Joel Santana takes the opportunity to relax. This Tuesday, the Flamengo coach attended a concert by samba artist Diogo Nogueira, son of João Nogueira, who is launching his first CD/DVD ("Diogo Nogueira ao vivo") at the Canecão in Rio. Besides listening to good music, the Flamengo manager enjoyed the evening with champagne. Another Flamengo fan at the event was reserve goalkeeper Diego.
During the show, many Flamengo fans asked for autographs and took photos with Joel, who repeatedly said his continued presence at the club could be a Christmas present. However, his status will only be determined this Wednesday in a meeting with the club's board.
This Monday, you saw on Globoesporte.com that Diogo Nogueira prepared a new version of "Samba Rubro-Negro, made by Wilson Baptista and Jorge de Castro, in the 50s, and revamped by his father, in 1979 (watch the video above).

Joel Santana enjoys qualifying in Rio
Joel Santana warned that he has offers from abroad, but will stay at Flamengo if the club matches them. The coach's statements caught vice president of football Kléber Leite by surprise. The director was unaware of any invitation to the coach.
"Joel never told me anything. He knows what Flamengo's possibilities are," he says.
In 2005, after saving Flamengo from relegation, Joel announced he would head to Japan to manage Vegalta Sendai. After qualifying Flamengo for the Copa Libertadores, he could pursue European football. However, to avoid any disagreements, Kléber Leite scheduled a meeting for this Wednesday.
"It'll be a quick chat. We'll try to keep it going in every way we can, but if that's not possible, that's okay," says the leader.
This Tuesday, Joel Santana stayed in São Paulo to participate in the program "Arena SporTV" and for this reason he did not go to Gávea.

Flamengo's squad returned to training this Tuesday afternoon in Gávea. Still buzzing from their Copa Libertadores berth, the players performed a lively circle of fools. Coach Joel Santana was absent.
He stayed in São Paulo to participate in the "Arena SporTV" program (watch the video). Before the event began, there was a photo op of state champions from all categories. Players from the youth, junior, and professional teams gathered on the field. Souza and Colace were released to attend to personal matters.
Even those who weren't at Flamengo at the beginning of the year participated, such as Ibson, Fábio Luciano, Maxi and Cristian.
Fábio Luciano is rooting for Joel to stay
The coach has not yet resolved his situation with Flamengo, but the captain is hoping for a renewal.
Fábio Luciano asks for Joel to stay
One of the main people responsible for Flamengo's rise in the Brazilian Championship, defender Fábio Luciano made a point of expressing his desire for coach Joel Santana to stay for the next season, when the club will compete in the Copa Libertadores.
The red-black captain admitted that the coach's presence was one of the factors that weighed most heavily when he decided to renew his contract until the end of 2008.
"I won't be happy if Joel leaves. A lot of my renewal was due to him. I want to work with him next year," he says.
Flamengo's board has already confirmed that it intends to keep the coach next year. However, Joel is reticent to discuss the matter. He assured that he has three attractive offers and expects to decide his future by December 10th.
The defender predicts a tough time for Flamengo in the Libertadores. He believes that retaining much of the current squad could make the difference in Flamengo's favor:
- Whoever wants to renew, the board has an obligation to accept. We'll have a complicated Libertadores.

Romulo has already gotten rid of his crutches
Initially, Rômulo was expected to be sidelined for six months due to a right knee injury. But the initial diagnosis changed. According to the midfielder, he will begin preseason training with the Flamengo squad in January and should return to the field in early February.
- Recovery time has dropped from six to three months - he says.
But to meet the deadline, he'll have to give up his vacation. December will be a busy month.
"No rest. I'll stay in Rio for physical therapy. But it's definitely worth it," says the Rio Grande do Sul native.
At 20 years old, Rômulo was a starter for Flamengo for 17 games, but was seriously injured in the game against Vasco, on October 18th.

Flamengo's vice president of football, Kleber Leite, announced this Tuesday an idea for a joint project with Corinthians. Not only in football, but also in the marketing area. The director declined to elaborate on the matter, but stated that the idea is to join forces between the two clubs with the largest fan bases in Brazil.
"We have major joint projects for 2008. I had a very good impression of Andrés Sanchez (the club's president), and I think Corinthians is in good hands. There's the possibility of a partnership in the areas of soccer and marketing. This is a long-standing idea of mine that could come to fruition," he stated.
Kléber Leite also discussed the possibility of Roger staying at Flamengo next season. Without wanting to say too much, the director once again praised the new Corinthians president and discussed the potential partnership.
"I think we've reached a happy ending. But this isn't the time to discuss Corinthians' situation in the Brazilian league. In fact, I'm rooting for them to stay in the top division. It's a mega club. The good relationship with Andrés and this potential partnership could help Roger stay, but I don't want to delve into that," he said.
If a partnership is actually reached in the football sector, there is a possibility that some players will be involved in an exchange for Roger.
Fla prepares for negotiations for Bruno
Contract renewal with goalkeeper is a priority for Rubro-Negro\ LANCEPRESS!\
Flamengo has already begun preparing to retain Bruno for next season. The goalkeeper's contract expires at the end of December, but vice president of football Kleber Leite is confident in the renewal negotiations with the investors who hold Bruno's economic rights.
"It's our number one priority. We're putting together a plan to present to investors with a view to acquiring 50% of his economic rights. There's also another possibility. Of the two paths, one will work. The chance of him staying is more than 50%," stated the confident Kleber, who preferred not to go into details.
But the negotiation isn't that simple. Investors want to profit and won't consider loaning Bruno back to Flamengo without a fee.
Show at Maracanã is a risk, says expert

The spectacle put on by Flamengo fans in recent matches at Maracanã impressed the players and coach Joel Santana. But behind the celebration lies the imminent risk of a major tragedy.
On Sunday, LANCE! caught a common occurrence when large crowds gather at Maracanã. While some sections of both the stands and the special seating are empty, others are overcrowded. And this is the problem, which, incidentally, occurs not only at Maracanã, but also at other stadiums in Brazil.
According to John de Quidt, chief executive of the Football Licensing Authority, a government agency in England created to ensure safety and comfort in stadiums, overcrowding is the biggest risk of tragedy in stadiums.
Among those responsible for combating hooligans and improving English stadiums, he analyzed the photos sent by LANCE! reporters, taken Sunday at Maracanã, and guaranteed that many problems can occur:
- The biggest problem is overcrowding. Besides causing chaos, it can also cause serious accidents. One example occurred in Guatemala in 1996. The Mateo Flores Stadium was overcrowded, and a stampede resulted in the deaths of 82 people.
De Quidt also stated that there are several ways to combat the problem. According to him, the fact that Brazilians don't respect seat numbers is no excuse for overcrowding in some sections of Brazilian stadiums.
"First, each sector must have its own specific entrances. Therefore, entry to another sector will be denied at the turnstile. Regarding access routes (staircases), it is unacceptable for people to block the passage, even in case of emergencies. Police must be on site to prevent this. To avoid this problem, only 90% of the tickets for each sector should be put on sale," he added.
Major Carlos Correa, from the Fire Department battalion responsible for Maracanã, saw the photos, but did not answer how many fans there were in the green sector.

Coach says victory over champion put an end to team's insecurity\ LANCEPRESS!\
The spot secured by Flamengo for the next Libertadores, once a source of ridicule for many people, began to be secured after the 1-0 victory over São Paulo, according to coach Joel Santana.
"We won a derby at a time when we were unsure about our style of play. We played a feisty game, showing great discipline in our marking, and we also had a great defense from Bruno, who is a great goalkeeper," he said in a statement to "Arena Sportv."
In order to further enhance the triumph over the current two-time Brazilian champion, Joel mentioned some of the players he worked with, as well as the physical form of the Tricolor Paulista at the time.
"We're facing a rested São Paulo team, riding high on a good run. They're a very good team, a team I respect a lot and that boasts players like Souza, Jorge Wágner, and Aloísio," he concluded.
Fla loses in the first game of the semifinal
The red-and-black team stumbles upon the Petrópolis defense, which wins 1-0
With a goal from Régis 11 minutes from the end of the second half, Petrópolis defeated Flamengo 1-0 this Tuesday at the Rua Bariri gymnasium in Olaria, in the first leg of the Rio de Janeiro State Futsal Championship semifinals. The team from the mountains needs only a draw in the second leg to advance to the final. The match is scheduled for Friday at 21 pm at the UCP Gymnasium in Petrópolis.
Few scoring opportunities in the first half. Both teams opted for heavy marking over attacking. The red-and-blacks, who had home advantage, threatened with Panázio and Michel, while Régis and Mancha were responsible for Petrópolis's most dangerous plays.
In the final stage, the pace of the match remained unchanged. Until Régis stole the ball in the opponent's half and unleashed a precise shot that gave goalkeeper Breno no chance: 1-0 Petrópolis.
The goal conceded left the red-and-black team nervous. The Petropolitans, in turn, made the most of their possession.
With 5:20 remaining, Michel nearly tied the game. Goalkeeper Douglas made an excellent save on a low shot. Coach Cid Escarlate went all-in, sending in the goalkeeper. Flamengo's performance increased but was hampered by the opponent's well-positioned defense.
Despite putting pressure on their opponents in the final minutes, Flamengo couldn't find the strength to equalize. Michel squandered the final opportunity with just ten seconds remaining.
Canto do Rio, from Niterói, and Teresópolis, face each other in the other semifinal of the competition.
