Maracanã already has a management model for the World Cup
American consultancy indicates that administration should be divided between Flamengo, Fluminense and CBF

In 2014, Maracanã will host the World Cup final. The object of desire for the national teams, the stadium has been coveted for seven years. However, the competition isn't for the title, but for the right to manage it. Hired by the state government to study the economic feasibility and prepare the basis for the bidding process, which will be officially released in 15 days, the American consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton concluded that Flamengo, Fluminense, and the CBF should be in charge of control. Adapting to FIFA regulations and revitalizing the stadium, which has undergone R$200 million in renovations but lacks adequate parking, for example, is expected to cost over R$40 million.
To facilitate investor attraction and partnerships by 2014, the State Secretary of Sports, Tourism, and Leisure, Eduardo Paes, stated that Booz Allen will indicate the impossibility of a single club managing the stadium. Flamengo, which formed a consortium with the Bonham Group and AEG Worldwide, will have to share management with the CBF and Fluminense if it wants to control the complex:
"It's impossible for just one club to manage the stadium until the World Cup and adapt it to FIFA regulations. Flamengo's board needs to understand this. The CBF, with the Brazilian national team, and Fluminense, which has already expressed interest, should join forces with Flamengo."
The CBF's participation is considered essential. The organization has influence over FIFA and would help transform the stadium into the headquarters of the Football Museum, one of the steps toward transforming the Maracanã into the World Temple of Sport by 2014. Furthermore, tourism potential would triple if the stadium were recognized worldwide as the home of the five-time champion team.
Three scenarios for external renovations at the stadium
Booz Allen envisioned a scenario—since discarded—in which Flamengo alone would control the stadium. The club could move its trophy room, sporting goods stores associated with the sponsor, and amateur sports teams to Maracanã. "A club's stadium leverages the team's brand (...) But it sacrifices the potential associated with the mystique of Brazilian football," the study predicts.
At another point, Booz Allen describes the potential of economic attractions and recognizes that shared administration "makes at least two major Rio clubs economically viable - Flamengo and Fluminense", and attracts foreign investment to the World Cup country.
Based on the Brazilian national team's 5-0 victory over Ecuador on October 17, Booz Allen reached a valuation of R$40 million. However, investments will increase in the years following the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
"Today, R$40 million is the starting point. But as the organization changes its requirements after a World Cup, it's quite possible that in 2011 the amount will rise to a level we can't yet predict," stated Eduardo Paes.
It was decided that the stadium needed urgent work behind the scenes to facilitate the work of the professionals involved in covering and staging the World Cup:
"We need to build a definitive mixed zone (for player interviews). The two press conference rooms need to be expanded, as do the locker rooms. The stadium also needs adequate access for the arrival and parking of the national team buses."
Booz Allen has established three scenarios for external construction at Maracanã Stadium, a listed property. The first, with restrictions, would preserve the Júlio de Lamare Aquatic Park and the Célio de Barros Athletics Stadium, which, according to the company, are not as active. The second is a compromise proposal and would depend on revisions to the listed decrees for construction.
The third, expansion, is the most controversial: it proposes the demolition of the Célio de Barros and Júlio de Lamare stadiums and the incorporation of areas along the railway line and Quinta da Boa Vista, where parking lots and new sports complexes would be built. The idea of building a shopping mall was discarded.

"The most important thing in the round is for Corinthians to get the result. When they don't get a point, they distance themselves from those closest to them and are less likely to escape that situation in the next round," said Nelsinho.
The coach, however, knows that getting another win won't be easy. "We're facing a team that's chasing the Libertadores. It's an even game. We're aware of our needs and what we have to do," he said. "We've improved in some areas, despite not getting the results we needed. This gives us hope and the conviction that we'll get through," he added.
For striker Finazzi, even a draw isn't a bad result. "We're prepared if that [a defeat] happens, but no one is thinking about that. We want a win, and if we don't get a draw," he concluded.

On the field, Natalino's performance in charge of Flamengo is only behind that of leaders São Paulo, and his team has the third-lowest average of goals conceded per game since his debut, in the 3-0 loss to Santos on August 5.
With 12 wins, four draws and five losses since his return to the current Rio de Janeiro champions, Joel has a 63,49% points per game average, an average only lower than São Paulo, which has a 71% success rate.
A defender from 1969 to 1980, a period in which he played professionally for Vasco, Olaria, América and América-RN, the Man of the Clipboard nailed the red-black defense, which has the third lowest average of goals conceded per game since his arrival - 1,05 (22 goals in 21 games) -, only ahead of Santos - 0,9 (19 in 21) and São Paulo - 0,43 (nine in 21).

Supporter Roger made a point of emphasizing that no one cared about Rubro-Negro and little by little the team grew.
"At the beginning of the Brazilian Championship, it was unthinkable to see us fighting for a spot in the Copa Libertadores. We dreamed of just avoiding relegation, and now we're going all out for a place in the Libertadores. Everything has changed," he admitted.
Roger, however, sounded the point when he said that Flamengo will still have difficulty surpassing its competitors. But for him, the fight for the ultimate goal must never cease.
"We were doing poorly, but they gave us a chance to catch up. We know we're still a bit behind, but we have every chance to win our games and overtake our main rivals," Roger declared, extremely confident.

Previously the protagonist of many embarrassments in this same 2007 Brazilian Championship, Flamengo could break a 25-year streak in the country's top competition this Wednesday against Corinthians: the club hasn't won five consecutive games since the 1982 edition, the year it lifted its second Brasileirão trophy. Flamengo is coming off victories over Paraná, Vasco, Grêmio, and América de Natal.
On January 20, 1982, Flamengo, the reigning world champions at the time, made their debut in the Brazilian Championship and faced São Paulo. In the first half, the visitors surprised everyone, and with two goals from Serginho Chulapa, they took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
However, the world champions were not willing to disappoint the more than 85 people present at Maracanã and, with a bomb from Zico, a shot with the outside of Andrade's right foot and a header from Galinho de Quintino, Flamengo emerged victorious with an impressive comeback: Mengo 3-2.
The stunning comeback indicated that the Gávea club was going all out to win its second Brazilian title. In the second game, against Náutico at Arruda Stadium, they struggled again, despite a goal from Leandro nine minutes into the match giving the impression that Flamengo might have an easy ride. They were wrong. Douglas and Hêider (twice) put Flamengo ahead. The Pernambuco side's 3-1 victory was incapable of dampening the world champions' spirits, and Zico, twice—one of which was a stunning free kick—and Lico secured the victory for the red-and-blacks.
On January 28th, another Northeastern team faced off, but this time Flamengo took no notice: a 5-0 victory over Treze, from Paraíba, in front of just over 16 paying spectators at the World's Largest Stadium. Andrade (two), Adilio, Nunes, and Zico were the game's top scorers.
Still at the Biggest in the World, three days after the chocolate over the Paraíba team, the Rubro-Negro faced the Ceará team Ferroviário and once again massacred: triumph by 3 to 0. Zico scored all the goals of the game.
To complete the streak, which could be equaled this Wednesday, the Gávea club faced Treze once again, this time at the Ernani Sátiro Stadium in Campina Grande. Tita (two) and Adilio scored the goals in the 3-1 victory.
It is worth noting that, after the five previously mentioned triumphs, Flamengo also beat Ferroviário 2-1 in Ceará, having its streak broken only by a 1-1 draw with Náutico. The second victory over the Ceará team, in fact, escapes the mark that Flamengo is chasing this Wednesday, but it tied the club's record, achieved in 1978, when it beat Americano (RJ), Bangu, Nacional (AM), Portuguesa (SP), Paysandu (PA) and XV de Novembro (SP) consecutively.

In the 110th match of the classic between Brazil's most-fancied clubs, Flamengo and Corinthians face off this Wednesday at 21:45 p.m. (Brasília time) at the Maracanã stadium in the 34th round of the Brazilian Championship. Different goals are in store for the Flamengo and Corinthians fans.
A victory for the Gávea team, combined with a Grêmio loss to Atlético Paranaense at Kyocera Arena, would place the Rubro-Negro in the coveted top four at least until Thursday, when Cruzeiro and Botafogo face off in Rio. A victory for the black and white team would lift the Parque São Jorge club out of the relegation zone, as it would overtake Sport, who only play on Thursday, when they face Internacional in Porto Alegre.
The red-and-blacks are on a four-game winning streak in the Brasileirão, a feat not seen since 1998, when Corinthians won the championship. It's worth noting that, among Flamengo's victories nine years ago, one of them was a 4-1 rout of Timão.
The Gávea club, sixth with 52 points, has won six of its last seven games and has a 37% chance of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores, according to mathematician Tristão Garcia. Timão, 17th with 41 points, has a 48% chance of avoiding relegation, according to Tristão.
Paulo Cesar Carpegiani, who played for Flamengo from 1977 to 1981 and coached the club twice (1981 to 1983 and in 2000), is betting on the strength of the Nação Rubro-Negra so that the team can achieve another triumph at Maracanã.
"This team has a very loyal fan base, regardless of the situation. Without a doubt, it's the most loyal fan base in Brazil and one of the largest in the world. Given the current situation, the unwavering support of its fans, and the fact that it's playing at home, I believe Flamengo has a great chance of winning," said Carpegiani, who managed Corinthians at the start of the Brasileirão, in his only stint with the club.
If Carpegiani, who has played for both Flamengo and Corinthians, sees Rubro-Negro as having a certain advantage, Marcelinho Carioca, who played for the Rio de Janeiro team from 1988 to 1993 and was the greatest idol of Timão's recent times - three spells and almost nine years at Parque São Jorge -, agrees with the coach's opinion, but with a heavy and divided heart.
"Flamengo at Maracanã is practically unbeatable. They're on an impressive run, supported by that nation, which is truly impressive. This match is a mystery, because when you least expect it from Corinthians, they surprise. I'm a Corinthians fan, but I believe that, with the strength of their fans, Flamengo will make it to the Libertadores," he ventures.
At Gávea, coach Joel Santana has no suspension or injury concerns to face Corinthians and will be at full strength. At Parque São Jorge, despite expecting a tough match in the derby, coach Nelsinho Batista preferred to keep it quiet and has already named his starting lineup.
