Guanabara Cup champion Flamengo took to the field yesterday with a mixed lineup in its Rio Cup debut against Resende. Despite a shaky start, Flamengo came from behind to defeat Resende 4-2, with two goals from Tardelli, the standout performer.
As an underdog, Resende launched an attack early in the game. They were rewarded in the 9th minute. Leonardo awarded a penalty to Alexsandro. And, with a stoppage, Alexsandro himself scored, simulated tears like Souza, and performed the "créu" dance. None of this shook Flamengo from its apathy.
The red-and-black team scrambled to get ahead, but without posing any danger. Worse still: in the 21st minute, after a pass from Toni, Léo scored Resende's second goal, with a right-footed shot into the corner.
Fla wakes up after conceding the second goal
That's when Flamengo finally became more aggressive. In the 26th minute, Leonardo headed the ball against the post. In the 27th minute, after a corner kick and a defensive error, Thiago Sales headed in to reduce Resende's lead. Flamengo had a different approach on the field, but, of course, they felt the absence of their full-backs, Leonardo Moura and Juan. Regardless, in the 33rd minute, Tardelli unleashed a beautiful shot, which Márcio made an excellent save. In the 42nd minute, Jônatas provided a beautiful pass to Obina, but the shot hit the post.
In the 14th minute of the second half, a play initiated by Luizinho on the right resulted in Kleberson passing to Obina, who headed the ball in to equalize for Flamengo. Four minutes later, Tardelli, with his right foot, turned the game around for Flamengo.
The game became lukewarm after that. Obina attempted a shot in the 34th minute, but the goalkeeper saved well. Bruno also made a good save in the 42nd minute from a Jack Jones shot. The red-and-black fans were already satisfied, singing and celebrating. But, after a good play down the left by Obina, Tardelli, in the 45th minute, scored the fourth goal for the red-and-blacks.
In the stands, there was dancing and music when Alexsandro was substituted due to his provocations when scoring Resende's first goal. At the end, the fans chanted in unison: "And no one can silence this crying..."
Attendance: 9.358 paying spectators (10.609 present). Revenue: R$96.449,00.
FLAMENGO
BRUNO: With the exception of Resende's two goals, for which he wasn't at fault, he wasn't overly challenged and returned the ball with quality. He only made one good save near the end of the second half. 6.
LUIZINHO: He took good care of his sector and, in the second half, went more on the attack. 6.
LEONARDO: He scored the penalty that led to Resende's first goal and showed a lack of coordination with Thiago Sales in the first half. He performed slightly better in the second half alongside his teammate. 5,5.
THIAGO SALES: It started out confusing, but he settled down and ended up scoring the goal, the team's first, which motivated the red-black reaction. 7.
EGÍDIO: He was shy when it came to supporting in the first 20 minutes. After that, he was a little more effective in attack, without neglecting his own sector. 6.
JAÍLTON: Very bad in the game. 4. GAVILÁN replaced him and, at least, moved a little more. 5.
JÔNATAS: He was slow in getting the ball out of defense and into attack. 4,5. MAXI came in his place, and although he didn't finish well, he moved intelligently on the field. 6.
KLEBERSON: Discreet in the first half, he loosened up in the second, when he supported the attack more, being important in the team's comeback. 6,5.
MARCINHO: He didn't know how to use his speed in the match. 5,5. CRISTIAN came in his place and marked his opponents with confidence. 6.
TARDELLI: The name of the game. Two goals, one assist, and great movement across the field, making life hell for the opposing defense. 8.
OBINA: He looked for the goal the whole time, but wasted two opportunities in the first half. He ended up scoring his and making a great play on the left for the fourth goal, scored by Tardelli. 7.
JOEL SANTANA: His team appeared apathetic in the first half and lacked chemistry, but given the opponent's weakness, they woke up after conceding two goals in time to turn the match around and secure a convincing victory. He made excellent changes to the team. 6,5.
RESEND
Alexsandro, who stopped after taking the penalty, stood out for the team. Goalkeeper Márcio also had a standout performance with some great saves.
ARBITRATION
Referee Leandro Noel Laranja did well in the disciplinary department, but he made some mistakes. There was a wrong offside call during a Resende attack.
Joel: 'Against Nacional the team will be fierce'
The victory with a mixed team against Resende was welcomed by coach Joel. After all, after winning the Guanabara Cup, the team needed to show a style of football worthy of honoring the red-and-black jersey. They did. But the coach's mind is on the Copa Libertadores match against Nacional in Montevideo on Thursday.
"We're going up against a strong team, and I want a very combative team there. One thing I can guarantee: we'll play as equals, looking for victory on their field," said the coach.
Flamengo Television starts operating today
As winning the Libertadores is a priority for the club, Joel rested several starters yesterday, with the aim of the team entering Uruguay with renewed energy.
"It was good to leave some players out. We need a strong team from start to finish in Montevideo," he emphasized.
The coach invited everyone to watch the Fla-TV premiere today.
- It's a way for the fans to be with us - said the coach.
Striker Diego Tardelli couldn't hide his joy. He scored two goals and set up another. The player said he feels good and has gained confidence.
"I don't know if it was my best match for Flamengo. I liked the one I played in my debut. The important thing is that I'm confident and fighting for my goal of being called up to the Olympics," he concluded.
Fernando Calazans
Flamengo struggled against Resende, but only in the first half. They were trailing 2-0 at one point. However, in the second half, they turned it around to 4-2, even with the mixed lineup.
It's the mixed team that should field most of the matches, and that's the only obstacle standing in the way of qualifying for the semifinals. Even so, with a mixed team, I wouldn't be surprised if Flamengo repeats the four semifinalists, along with Vasco, Botafogo, and Fluminense.

Flamengo's point guard Fred (D) tries to get past his opponent
Unbeatable. That's the word that defines Flamengo's basketball team. Yesterday, coach Paulo Chupeta defeated Iguaçu 113-57 (46-35) in Gávea, in the opening game of the ninth week of the 19th National Men's Basketball Championship. Flamengo remains undefeated at the top of the standings, with eleven wins in eleven games.
The top scorer of the match was Flamengo's winger Marcelinho, with 32 points. For Iguaçu, the top scorers were Douglas and Pedro, with 12 points.
"Our team is going through a marathon of games, very exhausting. To maintain our level, we're rotating players a lot, in addition to doing excellent physical preparation work. We started the match very well, but in the second quarter the team lost focus a bit and only improved after halftime, and that's how we won by a significant margin," said the red-and-black coach.
In the first quarter, Flamengo showed why they're at the top of the league. With a well-organized team and strong marking, the attack managed to impose its rhythm, and helped by an inspired day from Marcelinho, they closed the quarter with a 28-15 lead.
But in the second half, the home team lost focus and gave the young Iguaçu team an opening, which capitalized on the good opportunity and mounted a comeback. Even so, Flamengo's advantage was much greater, going into halftime with an 11-point lead (46 to 35).
After the break, Flamengo's players, after a conversation with Chupeta, refocused on the match and raised their technical level, giving their opponents no freedom to play. The defense, which had rested in the previous quarter, returned to its tough and precise form. As a result, the offense capitalized on its excellent chances and extended its lead to 76-44.
The final quarter had a practice match feel, as despite Iguaçu's attempts to fine-tune their plays, the Flamengo team maintained their strong performance, making excellent use of their rotation of players to maintain their excellent performance. Demonstrating clear superiority, Flamengo comfortably closed out the match with a lead of over 50 points (113 to 57).

Nation remembers Zico's 55th birthday
The Flamengo nation is celebrating. Zico, the club's greatest idol, is celebrating his 55th birthday today. Currently coaching Fernebaçe in Turkey, he has won every possible title with Flamengo.
Yesterday, some fans took a banner to the stadium, which read:
"Zico, the Maracanã's top scorer, deserves his statue."
The movement to immortalize Zico is strong. Fans have already collected around five thousand signatures to make this project a reality. Marked by achievements, the eternal Gávea number 10's connection with the club is one of the greatest in the history of Brazilian football.
He made his debut for Flamengo in 1971, and played his last match only in 1990, when he went to Japan to retire playing for Kashima Antlers.
Between comings and goings, he also had a notable stint at Udinese in Italy. After retiring, Zico was Zagallo's assistant at the 98 World Cup in France, and in 2006 he managed the Japanese national team in the World Cup, even facing Brazil. For all his achievements in football history, Zico can be considered the greatest player at the Maracanã.

Kleberson, Obina and Tardelli celebrate the goal
With a team full of reserves, Flamengo came from behind to defeat Resende. The match at Maracanã was the team's debut in the Rio Cup. Kleberson and Tardelli proved their worth and showed strength to secure their starting positions. The 4-2 scoreline is a good representation of the match, which featured numerous chances and numerous chances.
The defense was nervous from the start of the game. Leonardo and Thiago Sales had never played together before and were confused on several occasions.
Leonardo's debut couldn't have gotten off to a worse start. In the 9th minute, the defender brought down Alexsandro inside the box and conceded a penalty. The striker took the shot himself, waiting for goalkeeper Bruno to fall before scoring.
Resende wanted more and got their second goal in the 22nd minute. Leo received the ball unmarked at the edge of the box and finished into Bruno's corner.
With a two-goal lead, Resende retreated and allowed Flamengo to put pressure on them.
The red-and-black goal was predicted. After a header between the defenders, Leonardo failed to capitalize and missed an easy goal, heading the ball against the post.
The Gávea team only managed to score in the 27th minute, from a corner kick, Thiago Sales had to bend down to head the ball and score Flamengo's first goal.
Flamengo found their feet and went in search of the equalizer. Tardelli took advantage of the corner kick and fired a shot from the left, but Márcio made an excellent save and sent the ball wide.
Jônatas created a good scoring opportunity; the defensive midfielder passed to Obina, the striker's shot was off balance and hit the post.
In the second half, Flamengo came out much stronger and took control of the match. The introduction of Maxi and Gavillán in place of Jônatas and Jailton gave the team greater peace of mind.
The equalizer came in the 15th minute. Kleberson chipped Marcio Costa and crossed accurately for Obina to score.
The comeback was imminent, and it didn't take long. Tardelli ran freely through the middle and fired a superb shot, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. Just 18 minutes into the second half, Flamengo was already ahead.
The match cooled down, Flamengo seemed satisfied, and Resende lacked the strength to equalize. Joel took off Marcinho and brought on Cristian to secure the result.
When the match seemed to be drawing to a close, Obina went to the baseline and crossed for Tardelli to simply tap into the back of the net.
Game Character: Diego Tardelli
With each passing day, Joel Santana seems further away from naming his starting midfielder. Accustomed to alternating between Marcinho and Diego Tardelli, the duo must be driving the coach crazy. Against Botafogo, in the Taça Guanabara final, Marcinho started, but Tardelli came on and scored the goal that gave his team the title. In the match against Cienciano, the opposite happened, and it was Marcinho's goal that gave Flamengo its first Libertadores victory.
Yesterday, in what seemed like the final test for both players, Joel opted to start both players in the starting lineup. And this time, Tardelli was the one. Besides supporting the attack very well, he showed opportunism by taking a shot from outside the box and scoring two decisive goals that gave Flamengo the victory. Meanwhile, Marcinho ran a lot but achieved little. The midfielder tried hard, but didn't repeat his strong performance from the last match.
Ultimately, what's happening at Gávea is a healthy battle, a pleasant headache any coach would welcome. With two quality midfielders showing their worth and striving to earn a starting spot, what coach wouldn't be satisfied? Yesterday, Tardelli was very close to starting, but the duel seems far from over.
So, Joel Santana, who's your favorite?

Calm with the victory and the comeback, Joel says that the team needs to always be alert

Obina celebrated yesterday, with Diego Tardelli, after giving him the pass for Flamengo's fourth goal...
Flamengo has definitely taken over as the comeback team. After the thrashing suffered by Fluminense, the team played four matches, trailing in each of them and winning. Despite approving of recent performances, coach Joel Santana made a request of his players.
"Of all the games we've won like this, this was the one I suffered the most. It was nice to come back again, but we have to put an end to this, otherwise I'll be dead in two months," joked Joel, who explained the reason for taking Jônatas off at halftime, despite him being one of the best on the field:
"We weren't doing badly, but their team is very fast. We can't just play when we have the ball at our feet. The team was playing very well, but they weren't working well without possession. We took a long time to get back, and that's why I changed the team."
The coach has yet to confirm whether he will keep the mixed lineup on Sunday against Americano. However, since Flamengo won't arrive from Uruguay until Friday night, it's quite likely he'll make that decision. The fact that the reserve defense has conceded six goals in two games—yesterday against Resende and in the Fla-Flu match—isn't really a cause for concern.
"Every game is a different story. Against Fluminense, we conceded three goals from set pieces, and today (yesterday), even though we were losing 2-0, I felt the team was finding its feet and would win. At Flamengo, we can't just play from the back, we have to always attack and not give our opponents a chance," explained the coach.
Fighter
Finally, Joel revealed that he still has some doubts about Thursday's match against Nacional. However, he admitted that he should field a more defensive team.
"These teams know how to compete in the Copa Libertadores. The fans are on fire at their stadium. I'll have to field a more competitive team, because I can't just focus on playing nice. If we can get at least one point, our homework will be well done, especially since we have two games at the Maracanã to secure qualification," he assessed.
THE DAY
Flamengo comes from behind to beat Resende: 4-2
Genilson Junior
Rio - Flamengo struggled this Sunday at the Maracanã, but came from behind to beat Resende 4-2 in the opening match of the Rio Cup. After 21 minutes of play, the score was already 2-0 in favor of Resende, and the Red-Blacks turned the game around thanks to goals from Thiago Sales, Obina, and Diego Tardelli (two).
Flamengo's start was very poor. In the 8th minute, defender Leonardo, making his debut for the team, tangled with forward Alexsandro in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. The striker took the shot and made it 1-0, with a tearful and wild celebration in front of the Flamengo fans. In the 21st minute, Resende extended the lead. Toni made a good play and passed the ball to Léo, who slotted it into Bruno's left corner.
Flamengo gradually began to find its best form. Thiago Sales and Leonardo missed excellent chances to reduce the deficit. It was the young Flamengo defender who scored the first. After a corner, Thiago Sales bent down and headed home. 2-1, Resende.
After the break, Joel Santana launched the team into attack, bringing on Maxi for Jônatas. Paraguayan Gavilan also came on, replacing Jaílton, making his Flamengo debut.
The equalizer for the Red-Blacks came in the 15th minute. Kleberson made a great play down the right wing and crossed. Obina rose above the defense and headed the ball into the net: 2-2.
Flamengo pressed, but Resende didn't back down and sought the goal through counterattacks. It didn't take long for Flamengo to turn the game around. Maxi received the ball in midfield and found Diego Tardelli unmarked. The number 11 received the ball, adjusted it, and fired a low shot into the corner past goalkeeper Márcio. Mengão 3-2 at the Maracanã.
Goalkeeper Bruno still saved Fla, in the 42nd minute, with a beautiful shot from Jack Jones.
There was still time for one more. Obina received the ball on the left flank at the edge of the box and crossed. The number 11, alone, only tapped it into the net in the 46th minute.
In the next round, Flamengo faces Americano on Sunday. Resende will attempt to recover by facing Macaé at home.
Joel Santana likes the mix
Coach approves the experiments and promises to carry out new tests during the Rio Cup
Janir Junior
Rio - With a bottle of coconut water in hand, Joel Santana approved of Flamengo's "hot and mixed" team, said he will test new players in the Rio Cup, and even vented: he stated that after the last few victories, always with struggle and results built late in the game, his heart won't be able to take it. "Of the last few games, this was the most difficult. We have to stop this. Going for the goal at the end... my heart can't take it," he joked.
The team will rejoin this afternoon and travel to Montevideo tomorrow to face Nacional on Thursday in the Copa Libertadores. In the state championship, the team returns to action on Sunday against Americano. "We'll take it step by step. I'll take stock with the coaching staff to decide who to field for the Taça Rio. We may give some other players a chance," the coach said.
Joel said his substitutions worked and emphasized that the team was bold, but not disorganized. Obina, who scored one of the goals, felt relieved, having missed good opportunities during the match. "I had already missed two goals and needed to help the team. I scored one and passed to Tardelli for another," the player enthused.
Players and coaching staff emphasized that Flamengo isn't just made up of 11 starters, but rather a strong group. "This victory gives the whole group a boost. It's a shame only 11 can take the field," said Kléberson.
Starting today, FlaTV is going full throttle on the Internet, just as the Gávea team is on the big screen.
Striker is decisive again
After scoring the goal that gave Flamengo the Guanabara Cup title, Diego Tardelli was once again decisive yesterday. Besides scoring goals, the striker also demonstrated his ability as a game analyst. "The first half was embarrassing. The team was strange, but we managed to improve," the player stated.
Scoring another beautiful goal, Tardelli reminded everyone that the important thing is the ball in the net. "It can be with the toe, with the shin. I don't feel like I'm a starter; I'll continue to fight for the spot," said the player, who believes he's instilled doubts in Joel's mind: "It's good that he's having trouble putting this puzzle together."
Obina celebrates performance against Resende
Rio - Striker Obina, who scored the equalizer and provided the assist for Diego Tardelli's fourth goal, analyzed his performance in the 4-2 victory over Resende.
"Thank God I managed to score my goal. And at the end, I even provided that great pass for Diego to score. I hope to continue like this and fight for a place in the team. But Joel is the one who decides," he stated.
The Rubro-Negro darling reached 4 goals in the competition and is Flamengo's top scorer in the competition, alongside Diego Tardelli and Ibson.

Diego Tardelli helped Flamengo achieve the comeback
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Flamengo defeated Resende 4-2 in a comeback match played Sunday night at the Maracanã stadium in the first round of the second half of the Campeonato Carioca. The Taça Guanabara champions were trailing 2-0 but rallied in the second half thanks to halftime changes made by coach Joel Santana. The red-and-black team played with its reserves, which struggled to beat the team from the south of Rio de Janeiro, which consistently played with courage and gave Flamengo a tough time. With the victory, Flamengo reached three points in Group A and is level with Fluminense, but moved ahead of Tricolor by scoring one more goal than its opponent. In the next round, Flamengo will face Americano at the Maracanã stadium, while Resende will face Macaé. In midweek, Flamengo will face Nacional of Uruguay in the Copa Libertadores.
Comprised of experienced players like Jônatas, Kléberson, Obina, Marcinho, and Diego Tardelli, Flamengo started the match attacking Resende, trying to seal the victory in the opening minutes. However, the team from the interior of the state was undaunted by Flamengo's pressure and sought to use organized counterattacks. In the eighth minute, debutant defender Leonardo brought down striker Alexsandro in the box. Alexsandro himself skillfully converted the penalty to score the match's first goal.
The red-and-black team seemed undeterred by the deficit and went in search of a tiebreaker, but were surprised by a quick play from Resende. In the 21st minute, after a quick exchange of passes, the ball was passed back to Léo, who, from outside the box, fired a low shot and placed it in for the second goal. The fans were enraged, calling for more determination, and Flamengo began to play with more commitment, forcing the visiting team back into defense.
In the 26th minute, Leonardo's free kick hit Márcio's crossbar, and a minute later, Flamengo scored its first goal. After a cross from the left, defender Thiago Salles cut in between the defenders to put the ball in the net.
From that moment on, the red-and-black team took complete control of the match, and the referee issued several yellow cards to Resende players who constantly resorted to fouling to disrupt the play. The referee didn't apply the same criteria when midfielder Jailton, who already had a yellow card, committed a hard foul and wasn't cautioned again, which provoked numerous complaints from Resende players.
In the 32nd minute, Márcio made a great save from Diego Tardelli's shot. Flamengo had two chances to tie the match, both through Obina. In the first, Obina hit the post, and in the second, goalkeeper Márcio mishit the ball, but Obina controlled it and shot over the bar, missing a great opportunity.
Flamengo returned for the second half with Paraguayan Gavillan and Argentine Maxi replacing the ineffective Jailton and Jônatas. Joel Santana's team's performance completely changed. In just 14 minutes, Flamengo equalized. Kléberson made a beautiful run down the right and crossed for Obina's accurate header. The equalizer completely ignited Flamengo, who quickly scored the winning goal in the 19th minute. Diego Tardelli received the ball at the edge of the box, eluded his defender, and fired a shot into the net to score the third.
Trailing for the first time in the match, Resende's coach changed his team but was unable to change the outcome, as Flamengo held absolute control. In the 45th minute, as the small crowd was beginning to leave the Maracanã, the red-and-black team sealed the score with another goal from Diego Tardelli, who finished off a precise pass from Obina.

Flamengo's team gets a scare, but reacts and defeats Resende
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo's mixed squad, with only three starters (goalkeeper Bruno, midfielder Kléberson and striker Diego Tardelli), had a tough time, but managed to defeat Resende, 4-2, this Sunday, at Maracanã, for the Taça Rio, second round of the State Championship.
Flamengo's goals were scored by Diego Tardelli (2), Thiago Sales and Obina. Alexsandro and Léo scored for the Resende team.
Coach Joel Santana's objective was to rest most of the players for this Thursday's important match in Montevideo against Nacional-URU, in the third round of Group 4 of the Copa Libertadores da América.
In the next round of the Rio Cup, Flamengo faces Americano on Sunday, the 9th, at 16 p.m., at Maracanã Stadium. On the same day, but at 15 p.m., Resende hosts Macaé.
Unlike the Guanabara Cup, the first round of the tournament, the Rio Cup has different rules. Teams in Group A face off against those in Group B. In other words, each team plays eight times.
Having fielded a mixed lineup, Flamengo was not only disjointed but also sleepy. Resende, who had nothing to do with it, took advantage and quickly made it 2-0, with goals from Alexsandro and Léo, respectively.
With the negative result, Flamengo decided to wake up to the game. Resende, in turn, retreated and gave Flamengo space. After wasting a few opportunities, the team reduced the deficit through Thiago Sales.
From then on, Flamengo reigned supreme. Márcio made a great save from Diego Tardelli's shot. Before halftime, Obina ended up hitting Resende's left post.
"We missed a lot of goals. I decided to put Maxi on alongside Tardelli and Obina, with Marcinho also coming on. Jaílton was nervous and had a yellow card. That's why Gavilán came on," explained coach Joel Santana.
With the changes, Flamengo came back even stronger in the second half. It didn't take long for Flamengo to equalize and then turn the game around, with goals from Obina and Diego Tardelli, respectively.
In the 35th minute, a curious scene arose. Upon being substituted, Resende's Alexsandro was the target of mockery from Flamengo fans. The Flamengo fans performed the "créu dance," as the striker, upon scoring his goal, performed the same choreography to celebrate.
Finally, to top it off, Flamengo still had time to score a fourth goal. Obina crossed from the left and Diego Tardelli simply tapped it into the back of the net.
Joel Santana complains about Flamengo's slowness in the first half
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
With a mixed lineup and some debutants, Flamengo faced a difficult time against Resende this Sunday at Maracanã in the Taça Rio, the second round of the State Championship. After trailing 2-0, Flamengo fought back and turned the game around to 4-2. According to coach Joel Santana, the team was too slow in the first half.
"We weren't doing badly. However, it took a long time to rebuild the defense. This left the midfield very open. Resende has a fast attack and knew how to take advantage of it," he analyzed.
To balance the team, Joel Santana started the second half with Paraguayan midfielder Gavilán and Argentine striker Max Biancucchi, in place of Jaílton and Jônatas, respectively.
"I changed it for the following reason. Jaílton could have been sent off, as he already had a yellow card. And Jônatas was doing very well, but I needed a man who could play on the wings. We improved and went forward," said the coach, who praised the players and the red-black fans.
Despite the triumph, Joel Santana, with his feet on the ground, emphasized that Flamengo won't always come from behind to win. This was the case against Vasco and Botafogo. "We need to stop this, because my heart can't take it. One day it might not work out," he concluded.
Highlight in Flamengo's victory, Tardelli praises the red-black group
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
In Flamengo's 4-2 victory over Resende this Sunday at Maracanã in the Taça Rio, the second round of the State Championship, Diego Tardelli was a standout performer. However, despite scoring two goals, the striker emphasized the strength of the red-and-black team.
"Whoever comes in, gets the job done. This is happening at Flamengo. It's good for the group. Today (Sunday), Obina started, scored a goal and provided an assist for another," Tardelli analyzed, adding.
"I scored two goals, but the affection everyone has for me is the main thing. I've been at Flamengo for a month and a half and I already have great admiration for the club. My confidence is improving and I'm giving off positive energy," he added.
Regarding the team's poor start, which saw them trail 2-0, Diego Tardelli blamed it on a lack of team spirit. However, the striker revealed a reprimand from Joel Santana at halftime.
"The team wasn't very cohesive. It took us a while to get it right. Joel Santana was tough at halftime, but we came back more focused in the second half and won," he concluded.

Tardelli shines in comeback victory
Fla plays with a mixed team, gets a scare, but debuts in the Rio Cup by beating Resende
Eduardo Peixoto
Flamengo's mixed team started poorly, conceding two goals and having to watch Botafogo's Alexsandro dance the créu and "cry" in front of his fans. But in the end, the red-and-blacks recovered and smiled: a 4-2 victory over Resende at Maracanã, and a strong start to the Taça Rio, the second round of the Campeonato Carioca.
Just like in the first-round decider, and with all due respect, the hero was Diego Tardelli. The striker scored two goals, one of them a beautiful one, in Flamengo's comeback, securing first place in Group A with three points.
The red-and-black team's start this Sunday was frightening. Before the 25th minute, the team from the interior had silenced a nearly empty Maracanã stadium, and the reserves' behavior irritated the little over 10 fans in attendance. But the mixed team woke up and turned the game around with goals from Thiago Sales, Obina, and Diego Tardelli.
Flamengo rested most of its starters—the exceptions being Bruno, Kleberson, and Tardelli—ahead of Thursday's 18 p.m. match against Nacional. The third-round match of the Copa Libertadores takes place at Parque Central Stadium in Montevideo.
After finishing sixth in Group B of the Guanabara Cup, Resende begins the second half of the season with a loss and remains at risk of relegation. The two clubs with the fewest points in both rounds will advance to the 2009 Rio Série B.
Créu and chororô of the interior
Flamengo entered the field disinterested and without threatening Resende's goal. To make matters worse, debutant Leonardo's first move was frightening. He was easily dribbled past by Alexsandro and conceded a penalty in the ninth minute.
Thiago Sales scores Flamengo's first goal and catches the ball in his celebration
The Resende striker made a show of it. He stopped, hit the ball into Bruno's left corner, and in celebration, danced the "créu" and cried in front of the Flamengo fans. He later confirmed that he is a Botafogo fan and that he celebrated to get revenge on the red-and-blacks.
At a disadvantage, Flamengo's reserves pushed forward. Obina missed a good chance in the 11th minute when he shot wide in front of the goalkeeper. Shortly after, in the 15th minute, Tardelli headed the ball, but the goalkeeper saved.
But Flamengo's fragile defense allowed Resende to extend their lead in the 22nd minute. Beto took advantage of a gap between the defenders and passed to Toni. The forward passed, and Leo, from the edge of the box, shot into the left corner, but Bruno jumped late.
Obina misses goals. Stunned on the sidelines, Joel Santana heard the few fans present at Maracanã stadium urging the team to "fight." The defenders tried to redeem themselves in the 25th minute. Thiago Sales controlled the ball, and Leonardo headed it against the crossbar. From the rebound, Obina attempted a clumsy bicycle kick and missed.
In the next attempt, in the 28th minute, Diego Tardelli crossed and Thiago Sales bent down to head the ball and score Fla's first goal.
The goal buoyed the hosts. Tardelli fired a powerful shot in the 32nd minute, and Márcio stretched to save. In the 43rd minute, Jônatas sprinted and delivered a beautiful pass to Obina. He controlled the ball and shot against the post. The striker missed another chance in the 45th minute. Márcio received a back pass and shot poorly. Obina intercepted but shot wide.
Diego Tardelli shines again
To turn the score around, Flamengo turned to foreign players. Gavilán, who made his debut, and Maxi came on for Jônatas and Jaílton, respectively. The Argentine nearly scored all four. Then, Kleberson's shot in the eighth minute deflected, narrowly missing goalkeeper Márcio.
Diego Tardelli celebrates the winning goal
The pressure continued and paid off in the 15th minute. Kleberson beautifully chipped the ball over Márcio Costa, crossed from the right, and Obina finally scored. He headed the ball into the right corner to level the score.
The turnaround seemed only a matter of time. And indeed, it was. In the 20th minute, Maxi delivered a beautiful pass for Diego Tardelli to sprint away and score the third.
Obina nearly extended the lead in the 25th minute, but his header went wide. Resende didn't give up and began to make waves. However, the most frenetic moment came when Alexsandro, the one who had been crying and crying in the first half, was substituted. The fans booed and did the famous dance for the Resende player. In the 45th minute, Diego Tardelli added another, finishing with his right foot after a great cross from Obina from the left. 4-2 and another "créu" at the Maracanã.
Resende striker takes Bota's side
Alexsandro cries, cries, and says he supports Alvinegro, but loses to Flamengo
Alexsandro tried to avenge Botafogo's "crybaby" from Souza and Flamengo's "créu" in the Gunabara Cup final. The Resende striker celebrated his penalty goal by showing off and performing both red-and-black celebrations this Sunday in the match between the two teams at the Maracanã, valid for the first round of the Rio Cup, second round of the Carioca Championship (watch the video).
At half-time, with the interior team still partially victorious, he was ironic.
- Just like Souza, I also felt like crying - he said, confirming what he had imagined:
- I'm a Botafogo fan at heart.
But Alexsandro's solitary revenge ended in the second half, with Flamengo winning 4-2. Substituted near the end of the game, he received a loud boo and a choreographed "créu" from the approximately 10 Flamengo fans who were at Maracanã.
Unlike other times, Flamengo's players didn't respond. Even the celebrations were timid. Not even the players' traditional dance routines were seen. It's worth noting that Souza, suspended, didn't play.
Not even goals leave Tardelli at ease
Hero against Resende, striker says he still doesn't feel like a starter for Flamengo
Eduardo Peixoto
After a month and a half at Flamengo, Diego Tardelli scored four goals—one of them a title-winning goal—and earned the fans' recognition. However, the situation still doesn't give him peace of mind when it comes to a starting spot.
A reserve until last Sunday, when he came on and decided the Guanabara Cup title against Botafogo, the striker still sees Marcinho's shadow.
"I have to help in the toughest moments. With a mixed team or not. I still don't feel like a starter because there's a fight between Marcinho and me. I have to run because if I slip up, I could be out of the lineup. If I maintain my average, Joel will think twice before benching me."
Against Resende, Tardelli scored two goals and crossed for Thiago Sales to score one. At the end of the match, he made a point of greeting the fans at Maracanã.
"The affection they show me is the most important thing. In a month and a half, we've already achieved all of this. I'm very happy with this recognition."
For Thursday's Libertadores match against Nacional in Uruguay, coach Joel Santana has yet to announce his starting lineup. Tardelli is expected to play alongside Souza in attack. There's a possibility, however, that Flamengo will field a more cautious lineup.
'The beginning was shameful,' says Tardelli
Striker says Fla's team was 'strange' in the first half against Resende
Eduardo Peixoto
Flamengo conceded two quick goals and looked like they would lose to Resende this Sunday. A second-half comeback and 4-2 victory ensured a calm start to Thursday's Copa Libertadores match against Nacional.
But the poor performance at the start of the match scared Diego Tardelli, who scored two goals in the 4-2 victory.
"The first half was embarrassing. That wasn't Flamengo, it was a strange team. But Joel shook us up at halftime, and we changed our attitude. After winning the Guanabara Cup, we needed to make a good impression," says the striker.
Coach Joel Santana was less critical. He believes the Rubro-Negro's biggest mistakes were in the marking, and that the team later woke up.
"The team was happy and cute, but they weren't hardworking without the ball. Then we improved and managed to turn the game around. These weren't lucky goals, but rather goals from well-worked plays," the coach analyzes.
Obina manages to redeem himself
Flamengo striker misses goals in the first half, but recovers in the final part
Eduardo Peixoto
Obina missed goals in the first half, leaving the fans longing for Souza. However, in the second half, the Flamengo forward recovered, scoring a goal and setting up another in a 4-2 victory over Resende at Maracanã.
In the end, he left the field to cheers from the fans who shouted "Obina, Obina".
"I knew I'd missed two goals and needed to help Flamengo somehow. I scored one and passed it to Tardelli for another," says the striker.
Another standout player was Kleberson. He commanded the midfield with first-time passes and delivered a beautiful lob for Flamengo's second goal. He made a point of praising the mixed red-and-black team.
"This victory gives all the players a boost. It's a shame only 11 can take the field."
Flamengo returns to action next Thursday at 18 p.m. against Nacional. The Copa Libertadores match takes place in Montevideo.
Flamengo is ranked 11th in the men's national championship
Rubro-Negro puts a 56-point difference over Iguaçu in the clash between Rio teams
Marcelinho shone again, leading Flamengo's scoring charts with 32 points. Flamengo was a devastating force in the opening week of the ninth National Men's Basketball Championship. Playing at home, the red-and-black team defeated Iguaçu 113-57 this Sunday, securing their 11th victory in the competition and maintaining their unbeaten streak and lead in the tournament. Marcelinho Machado was Flamengo's standout performer, with 32 points.
"We started the game well, but lost focus a bit in the second quarter. We talked at halftime and came back more focused, defending better. With that, the team once again demonstrated its high technical level, and we managed to win by a large margin of 56 points," commented coach Paulo Chupeta.
The best player on the court, Marcelinho praises the group's work.
"Thanks for the win, for the team's excellent performance, once again. Everyone played well, participated, and contributed to this victory. Our team started the first half a little sluggish, and we didn't have a good second quarter, but we came back scoring better and changing things up more, working the ball more after halftime," says Marcelinho, the championship's top scorer with 287 points (an average of 26,1 per game), through his advisor.
In 12th place in the National Championship, Iguaçu travels to Bahia to face Salvador in a bid to recover. Flamengo, also qualified for the quarterfinals of the South American Club League, will not play again until next Sunday, against Saldanha da Gama, in Espírito Santo.

LANCEPRESS!
Flamengo debuted in the Rio Cup on Sunday night and struggled to defeat Resende 4-2 in a comeback victory at the Maracanã stadium, the first meeting in the clubs' history. With a team made up mostly of reserves, Flamengo managed to overcome the odds and take all three points after trailing by two goals.
The opening half had it all. In addition to numerous infractions, there were three goals and seven yellow cards shown by the referee. Taking advantage of Flamengo's lack of cohesion, Resende sought victory from the start.
The club from southern Rio de Janeiro took the lead after just nine minutes. Alexsandro made a run down the left, got past Leonardo, and was brought down in the box by the Flamengo debutant. With a quick stop, Alexsandro himself perfectly converted the penalty kick. In celebration, he did the Souza chorinho and danced the créu.
Resende continued to dominate the match and scored the second goal without much difficulty. Toni made a run down the right and passed it to Léo, who finished with skill.
Shaken by the deficit, Flamengo was completely disorganized on the field, relying on set pieces to threaten their opponents. Leonardo, who had missed the goal, nearly scored with a header, but it hit the crossbar.
Flamengo pulled one back in the next play. Diego Tardelli took a corner from the right, and Thiago Sales, without needing to jump, headed it in. Flamengo gained momentum with the goal and created two more good chances before halftime. In the first, Diego Tardelli forced a beautiful save from Márcio. Near the end, right in front of goal, Obina hit the post with a shot.
In an attempt to give the team more movement, coach Joel Santana made two changes for the decisive stage. Jônatas and Jaílton, who already had yellow cards, were replaced by Gavilán and Argentine Maxi. The Paraguayan made his Flamengo debut.
With a very courageous attitude, Resende never gave up on the attack - as smaller teams tend to do when they are winning - and every now and then posed a threat to Bruno's goal.
The visitors' overexposure gave Flamengo the field, which equalized with its first significant opportunity of the second half. Kleberson flicked the ball past the defender inside the box and crossed for Obina to head home. It was the fourth goal for the fans' favorite, who now equals Ibson as the team's top scorer in the Carioca Championship.
The equalizer buoyed Flamengo, and it didn't take long for the comeback to happen. Diego Tardelli received the ball in midfield, advanced, and skillfully slotted it into the corner past goalkeeper Márcio. It was the third goal for the Guanabara Cup hero for Flamengo.
With the result in hand, Joel pulled the team back a bit, and Marcinho replaced Cristian, who's a better scorer. For Resende, coach Roy brought on Jack Jone for Alexsandro, and the number 9 had to listen to the jeers from the red-and-black fans, who chanted "Créu" in response to the forward's provocation when he scored the penalty.
From then on, Flamengo managed the positive result and maintained its 100% record against smaller clubs in this year's Campeonato Carioca. They won seven of their seven matches.
In stoppage time, Obina crossed from the left and Tardelli finished without difficulty to put Flamengo at the top of Group A of the Taça Rio.

"We started the game well, but lost focus a bit in the second quarter. We talked at halftime and came back more focused and defending better. Joel says his heart can't take it
Fla fell behind on the scoreboard for the third time in four games\ LANCEPRESS!\
Flamengo's recent routine of conceding the first goal in matches has been troubling coach Joel Santana. He warned that he's not in good health to handle such desperation in games and suspects his heart will suffer if this continues.
In its last four games, Flamengo has fallen behind on three occasions—against Vasco, Botafogo, and Resende. Only against Cienciano did the red-and-black team's victory fail to come from behind.
"It's time to stop this, because my heart won't be able to take it anymore. We have to stop this whole thing about starting with a loss," the coach said.

One of Flamengo's standout performers in their Rio Cup debut, striker Obina was thrilled with his contribution to Flamengo's 4-2 victory over Resende. Besides scoring once, the fan favorite also set up Diego Tardelli for the game's final goal.
With his goal, Obina took over as Flamengo's top scorer in the Carioca Championship, alongside Ibson and Diego Tardelli, who each have four goals. He hopes to continue this trend and perhaps secure a spot in the starting lineup.
"Thank God I managed to score my goal. And at the end, I even provided that great pass for Diego to score. I hope to continue like this and fight for a place in the team. But Joel is the one who decides," he said.
Tardelli praises the affection he has been receiving

One of the key signings for this season, striker Diego Tardelli has already reaped the rewards in his short time at Flamengo. With his stellar performance, Tardelli left the field to a standing ovation from the red-and-black fans. He couldn't hide his satisfaction with all the affection he's received from the stands since arriving at Gávea.
"The affection they've shown me is very special. I'm doing very well at the start of this season and I'm grateful for the support I've received since I arrived at Flamengo. Everything is really different here," he said, gushing over his new club.
