Joel: 'The situation is horrific'
Flamengo coach fires in all directions and announces 'inventions' against Figueirense

Angry, dissatisfied, and... making things up. Shaken by Flamengo's return to the relegation zone, coach Joel Santana took up his machine gun and fired. He lashed out at Roger, Souza, and the players in general, saying the team was emotionally unbalanced. And, shooting himself in the foot, he declared that Flamengo was in a terrible situation.
In a nearly uncontrollable outburst, he even got the logic right. Although he knows tomorrow's game against Figueirense is high-stakes and the pressure on the team will be immense, he decided to take a risk. And also to invent. Without Juan, who is suspended, he must improvise with supporter Léo Medeiros at left back.
To replace Roger, who is also suspended, he moves back Renato Augusto. Up front, unsure if Maxi will return, Joel appears inclined to field Leonardo, who hasn't played in a while and seemed to be out of his plans, as a partner for Obina, who isn't playing at all. "I'm angry. We're in this situation because of us. Against Botafogo, we had the game in our hands and missed the penalty. We lacked skill (sic). Against Sport, we can't concede a penalty from a defender's play. Do you think the fans are satisfied, the board is satisfied, or I'm satisfied? If we had won on Saturday, we would have moved away from the relegation zone."
What irritates Joel most is the fact that Flamengo, in his view, hasn't learned the lesson of relegation. At the same time, he says he could fix it if he had time, but he confesses his impotence.
"The team is emotionally unbalanced. I'm living in the hotel and concentrating at home. If I had the time, I'd have the team train for two hours a day until they learn. But it's game after game...
Another detail that irritates the coach: the lack of commitment from some players to the cause. These are yellow cards and expulsions that, in Joel's view, could have been avoided. The main target of criticism is Roger, who played in seven of ten games.
- Roger is mature enough not to receive so many cards. A game card is a game card, a silly card is not a game card...
Realizing he was getting heated, Joel tried to tone down his speech. But he soon returned to his furious tone.
"It's a bitter Monday. The situation is horrible, but the more you talk, the more you slip, the deeper you fall. The tone can't be any more gentle because I'd be telling lies if I said everything was fine. I'd be making up fairy tales or telling stories about Tio Janjão (a popular radio show in Rio in the 50s). It had everything to be a joyful Sunday, but I had to stay home. The situation doesn't allow for being out and about," said Joel.
Coach is harsh in dismissing Egídio
With the players, Joel's tone was more measured. He gathered the group at the center of the field and spoke at length. But his speech didn't alarm even those who know they might be in trouble tomorrow.
"I'm ready. I'm not a full-back, but I've played in that position and I know what I can do. I'm calm because of the confidence Joel has in me," said Léo Medeiros.
Joel's choice was surprising. Overlooked by the coach, Egídio, a homegrown talent, was on loan to Paraná until the end of the year, where he was the starter. Flamengo snapped him up to be Juan's backup, but as of yesterday, it became clear that Joel is unlikely to play again. When making his choice, the coach was very clear.

Tomorrow, clubs will sign an agreement with Suderj to play at the stadium

One of Rio de Janeiro's most iconic landmarks, Maracanã Stadium, will become the main venue for Flamengo and Fluminense matches starting tomorrow at 10 a.m., when the two clubs will sign a loyalty agreement with Suderj (Rio de Janeiro State Sports Federation). Under the agreement, hammered out by Sports Secretary Eduardo Paes, the clubs commit to playing 70% of their home games at the stadium, paying a symbolic fee of R$5 (the maximum fee was R$40) and keeping all match revenue.
Clubs are already thinking about the future of Maracanã
According to Eduardo Paes, just like Maracanã, both clubs benefit from the agreement.
"Flamengo and Fluminense are clubs with large fan bases. In stadium management, we make money from the sale of game signs, box seats, and also from services that involve the public, such as food sales," explains Eduardo Paes. "The loyalty agreement is beneficial for all parties, as the clubs will receive virtually all of the proceeds from the event for their own coffers."
For Fluminense president Roberto Horcades, this is the first step toward the club quickly acquiring its own stadium. The second will be the bidding process, through Suderj, for the lease of Maracanã.
"Fluminense is interested in this bid to have our stadium. We can enter it together with Flamengo or, if the red-and-black club isn't interested, alone. The important thing is the step being taken now. We will have a stadium named after Mário Filho, a red-and-black club, and we will pay tribute to his brother, Nelson Rodrigues, a great playwright and journalist for the club," Horcades states.
Flamengo president Márcio Braga says the club is satisfied with the agreement to be signed tomorrow, but wants to learn more details about the bidding process to see if it's of interest to the club, as it has its own project to revitalize the Gávea stadium. Márcio made it clear that if the Maracanã interests the club, he will not participate in the bidding process alongside the club.

As expected, Diego Hypólito was the standout performer for the Brazilian men's gymnastics team, which debuted yesterday at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Unfortunately, I won't be able to reach the final on this apparatus," he explained. "The other events helped me earn points for the individual all-around final, where the top 24 will qualify."
If Diego qualifies for the individual all-around, he will be the second member of the delegation to achieve this feat. The first was Jade Barbosa, who will also compete in the vault and balance beam finals.
Overall, Brazil is in 9th place with 351.550 points, and China leads (374.275), but the qualifying round isn't over. Today, strong teams like the United States, Canada, and Romania are competing. A top-12 finish will secure the unprecedented qualification of the entire team for the Olympic Games. The victory over Goiás on August 26th brought joy back to the Flamengo fans. The result kept Flamengo out of the relegation zone, but the celebrations were short-lived. "Figueirense will play with three defenders and try to congest the midfield. We have to drop deep to cross the ball into the box and try to score. The victory, besides taking us out of the relegation zone, will give us peace of mind for the match against Internacional."
The bad moment of a promise
