A passion listed by the City Hall
Decree makes Flamengo fans a Cultural Asset of the City
Photo caption: END OF THE year celebration: Márcio Braga lifts the trophy offered by the CBF to Flamengo fans
Decisive in Flamengo's reaction, honored by the CBF, highlighted on the FIFA website, Flamengo's fans will receive another tribute today: in the Official Gazette, the City Hall will publish a decree registering the red-black fans as a Cultural Asset of the City.
The decision was made last Tuesday during a meeting between Rio de Janeiro Mayor Cesar Maia and his staff. In an email, the mayor justified the decision by citing recent demonstrations by Flamengo fans, who averaged 39.221 paying spectators per game in the Brazilian Championship.
"It demonstrated the character of popular culture in the process of mobilization, in addition to reinforcing Rio's centrality. The mass choreography, the mass singing. For everyone, this characterizes popular culture and should be marked as such," said Cesar Maia, an avowed Botafogo fan.
Excited by the news, Flamengo president Márcio Braga said he will contact the mayor to organize a ceremony with the fan club leaders to celebrate the decision.
"It's a sensational, wonderful decision. Flamengo's fans are a national treasure and deserve all these tributes. It has to be a memorable celebration," said Márcio Braga.
Recently, the city's intangible assets and cultural productions have been listed by the City Hall. Flamengo fans join the carnival groups Cordão do Bola Preta, Banda de Ipanema, and Cacique de Ramos, Bossa Nova, Pixinguinha's discography and musical production, and even the figure of the lambe-lambe photographer as listed intangible assets. Although such listing is more symbolic than practical, Cesar Maia explained that the listed assets now receive "monitoring and support from the government," promoting them as examples of Rio's cultural production.
Through its press office, the Extraordinary Secretariat for Cultural Heritage explained that Flamengo now has the city's recognition that its fans are a representative element of the city. According to the Secretariat, the club can now use the city's endorsement of the fans in fundraising efforts. Cesar Maia said he sees no reason for any adverse reactions from fans of other clubs.
"They should all reach this point and would normally be listed. Fan clubs in defeats, that's very difficult," he said, before commenting on the possibility of listing other fan clubs. "Identifying these elements or other distinctive features, of course, is possible. And the listing is only definitive if those characteristics remain."
But there have already been contrary reactions.
"I'm a Flamengo fan, and this was never necessary. It's a political fact in an election year," said Santos coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
- Anyone who lived at the club knows that the relationship with the fans was always spontaneous, there was never any need for that - said former player Júnior.

I met Luana online. She's a brilliant 25-year-old who loves life and Flamengo. Luana has been my reader since she was 18, when I started the "Tiro Livre" column in another newspaper. Smart and lively, she writes her witty emails for this column with passion and ease. She ended up becoming an inspiring muse for the columnist, a role she performs with formidable skill to this day.
We were talking about Flamengo and my arrival at Jornal dos Sports, when Luana suddenly changed the subject.
- Did I tell you about my grandfather? He had three heart attacks at the end of September.
- How old is he? – I ask.
- Eighty-one. He underwent emergency surgery and was placed in an induced coma.
Luana says he's a special grandfather. "But the situation is complicated. Very serious."
- That's life, girl – I risk a word of consolation that I know will be of no use.
"Yeah, but there was a funny side," Luana says via MSN. She continues: "When I went over there the first day he woke up from his coma, the first thing he mumbled upon seeing me was: 'Flamengo was relegated'? I told him it wasn't, and that Flamengo had jumped to third place with a chance of making it to the Copa Libertadores. His blood pressure immediately spiked. He threatened: 'If that's a lie, I'm going to be sick, just imagine.' He smiled and asked me: 'How long was I asleep, my dear?'
From then on, Luana and her father took it upon themselves to sneak an old battery-powered radio around to listen to Flamengo games without the nurses noticing.
-I also left my MP4 in case of any radio failure.
Luana assures that her grandfather is full of good humor despite his illness. "He only got angry when he found out they were questioning his fifth championship," she said with a laugh.
Luana reunited on Orkut. Monday, December 3, 2007. A couple of messages a few hours apart.
First message: "Grandpa almost left us twice this weekend." Cheer for us here, dear friend. Kisses."
Second message: "He's gone, John. He's upstairs now. Thanks for the support, but now it's time for us to pack up our flags and whistles and head home... The game is over."
Thank you for your kindness! Kisses,
Luana”
Twist in the case of supporter Roger
Contrary to what was announced by the club's board, the player may leave Gávea
Thiago Bokel
News at Gávea: Supporter Roger may not stay with the club for the Copa Libertadores.
Considered a done deal last week, midfielder Roger's stay at Flamengo may no longer be a reality. The situation took a turn after a meeting between vice president of football Kleber Leite and coach Joel Santana yesterday afternoon. The player's agent, Mauro Azevedo, was still unaware of the information.
"Negotiations were well advanced, especially since Corinthians was interested in Gerson Magrão. No one from Flamengo has communicated anything to me yet," the agent explained. The director admitted that Roger may not stay at Gávea next year: "We're evaluating the squad, and Roger's situation is also being analyzed. We haven't yet decided whether he'll stay or leave the club," Kleber explained.
In fact, the vice president of football is the only one who wants to keep the player.
Other members of the board and the coaching staff itself believe that Roger is a very expensive player and that he has not lived up to the high investment made by Rubro-Negro in his football.
No destination\ Besides him, other players still don't have their futures defined, such as the Minas Gerais trio of Jaílton, Léo Medeiros, and Luizinho. While the first two have a good chance of staying, the situation of the last one is still unknown.\
"There won't be a release list here. Of course, some players won't stay, but they will be loaned out. The evaluation isn't complete yet, and I think it's unlikely we'll have any news by the end of the week, either about who will arrive or leave," the manager explained.
Cristian Kleber also stated that he was unaware of any European club's interest in midfielder Cristian. Since Flamengo acquired 50% of the player's federation rights from Atlético-PR, in the event of a deal, they would receive a financial compensation of US$1 million. He also denied that he is negotiating with defender Chicão, who played in the Brazilian Championship for Figueirense.
Artileiro Souza turns things around
File/JS
After criticism, Souza proves his worth at the club
After arriving at Flamengo with savior status, having been the top scorer in the 2006 Brazilian Championship with Goiás, striker Souza took a while to win over the fans. Signed to compete for a starting spot with the darling Obina, he quickly fell out of favor. Despite sustaining a knee injury at the club's main rival early in the year, Souza only gained the fans' trust in the second half of the year.
Although he scored important goals, such as in the Carioca final, he was still far from being a unanimous choice. But it was during his most difficult period of the season, when he was suspended for seven games by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), that Souza found the strength to rise from the ashes. From then on, the striker became a regular starter for Joel Santana's team and managed to finish 2007 strong.
"I had a good season and now I'm going to take advantage of this vacation to not neglect my physical preparation and come back at a high level," said Souza, who admitted to having received inquiries at the end of the year:
"When you're doing well, offers come your way, but I'm very happy at Flamengo and I want to stay. We have the Libertadores next year, which is every player's dream, and I'll work very hard to make that dream a reality," he promised. In 40 games this year, Souza scored 15 goals for Flamengo, three in the Libertadores, six in the Carioca, and six in the Brasileirão. Now, the striker is hoping the team's core team will be retained for next season.
Rubro-Negro planning defined for 2008
After more than three hours of meeting to analyze the group and possible signings, coach Joel Santana has already decided that he will work with a maximum of 32 players in 2008. Of these, 80% of the players are already at the club.
"I didn't have any problems with the discipline. We need to see who fits within the club's budget and we will take advantage of the youth players," the coach said.
Among the speculation, the name of striker Amoroso, who has been without a club since terminating his contract with Grêmio in August, surfaced strongly in Gávea, but was quickly dismissed by vice president of football Kleber Leite. Another case being closely analyzed is Bruno. Flamengo has made every effort to keep the goalkeeper, but is already considering another option in case he doesn't stay: Felipe, the standout performer for the relegated Corinthians in this Brazilian Championship.
Party at CFZ\ The now traditional all-star game, organized by Zico, already has a date and location set: December 27th, at Maracanã. The 1987 Brazilian champion team has already been confirmed, along with Dutchman Seedorf and Japanese Nakata.\
The red-and-black fans are Rio's cultural heritage
Brazil's biggest fan base will be honored once again. Mayor Cesar Maia, through his old blog, which currently only sends posts via email, announced yesterday that Flamengo will be honored today by Rio's City Hall, which will declare the club's red-and-black fan base listed as a cultural heritage site in the Official Gazette.
This isn't the first tribute the club has received this year. In addition to the decree declaring Flamengo Fans' Day on October 28th, it was also made official that November 17th will become Flamengo Day.
This is yet another recognition given to the strength coming from the stands, which propelled Fla from second-to-last to third place in this Brazilian Championship, with an average of over 39.000 paying spectators per match, when they played in Rio.
Flamengo fans are honored and Marcio Braga secures the Libertadores title
Flamengo fans received a fitting tribute during the 2007 Brasileirão Champions Awards on Monday night. The Flamengo Nation received the trophy for the best fans in the Brasileirão. Representing Flamengo fans from all over Brazil was the president of the Gávea club, Marcio Braga.
The director was emotional and didn't miss the opportunity to cheer on the fans gathered at the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater. Upon receiving the trophy from Sports Minister Orlando Silva Júnior, Márcio Braga stated that Flamengo's fans would push the team to win the Copa Libertadores in 2008.
"This fan base is the greatest asset of Flamengo's regatta club, and will push our team towards Tokyo in 2008," said Flamengo president Márcio Braga. It's worth remembering that the Interclub World Cup, which Braga referred to in his statement, is no longer taking place in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, but in the city of Yokohama.
Two from Fla among the best
Fullback Léo Moura and midfielder Ibson are elected to the Brazilian Championship team of the year.
Bernardo Peirão, Gabriel Santos, Jorge Lourenço and Julio Gracco
The ceremony held yesterday at the Municipal Theater, which closed the curtain on the 2007 Brazilian Championship, was attended by idols who have etched their names in soccer history. Leonardo Moura and Ibson, both from Flamengo, represented Rio de Janeiro in winning the gold trophies for the Craque do Brasileirão award. The winners' next match will be a festive match against the Brazilian pre-Olympic team on Sunday at the Engenhão stadium.
The evening's honoree was Nilton Santos, a former Botafogo player who won two World Cups with the national team in 1958 and 1962. The "Football Encyclopedia," however, was unable to attend the event and was represented by president Bebeto de Freitas. Romário also received a tribute and was moved.
There was much anticipation surrounding the Rio players' potential award wins. However, only Leonardo Moura and Ibson took the trophy. Fluminense midfielder Thiago Neves and Vasco da Gama striker Leandro Amaral were close to winning. The Tricolor player was competing for his second award of the day, having won the "Golden Ball" from "Placar" magazine earlier in the afternoon, but he wasn't as lucky and ended up with the silver trophy. The Vasco da Gama player also received a silver trophy, and ironically, when he lifted the trophy, he was forced to listen to the "runner-up again" chant from the red-and-black fans.
The biggest disappointment of the night was the fact that Joel Santana—who was cheered by Flamengo fans upon arriving at the theater—lost the Best Coach trophy to São Paulo's Muricy Ramalho. To make up for it, the Flamengo fans received a beautiful tribute: the Torcida de Ouro Trophy, presented to Flamengo president Marcio Braga.
Vitor Rosa prepares for the Brazilian Championship
As if finishing runner-up in the Troféu Brasil wasn't enough, Victor Rosa is already looking to other achievements. Training at Flamengo is proving to be a testament to the athlete's dedication. All this is geared up for the Final Stage of the Caixa de Ginástica Circuit, which will take place on December 14th and 15th.
"The result depends on my effort, nothing comes easy, that's why I've been very dedicated and taking my training seriously because I have everything I need to win another title," says the gymnast excitedly.
Victor Rosa will be the reserve athlete for world champion Diego Hypólito at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and can't wait to embark on the journey towards every athlete's dream.
"Even as a reserve, I'll be participating in the Games, and that's priceless. It's every athlete's dream to be an Olympic champion, and I'm sure my friend Diego will represent our country very well, but if something unexpected happens, I'll be there to help him."
Victor Rosa and Diego Hypólito are the only members of the Brazilian Artistic Gymnastics Team who are in Beijing and have brought joy to many Brazilians with their achievements.

The playoff battle begins
Flamengo and Macaé open the semifinals of the Men's State Basketball Championship on Thursday
Rafael Oliveira
After two months of exciting matches, the State Basketball Championship reaches its decisive stage: starting Thursday, the championship's playoff stage begins, which, if it has already reserved moments of great emotion for fans, promises double the excitement in the next two weeks.
Of the eight teams, four remain: Flamengo, Vasco, Fluminense, and Macaé. The Flamengo, who had the best record in the first phase, will face Macaé for a spot in the final. The team from the Lagos Region has been known for its surprises against the favorites. They defeated Fluminense and Vasco and narrowly missed doing the same against the club from Gávea.
The first match between the two teams will be Thursday in Macaé. The favorite, Flamengo, is fighting to prevent the euphoria from derailing its plans for a third championship.
"You can't have any such thing as favoritism. The last game was tough. They worked hard on the mistakes they were making and improved a lot. That's why we're practicing in two periods, to adjust the rotation and defense so we don't give them space to make three-point shots, like we did last time."
In the other semifinal, the Tricolor and Cruzmaltinos promise an electrifying derby. While the Laranjeiras team is fighting to win its first derby, Vasco da Gama wants a spot in the final to crown their good work in the first round.
The duel will bring together the current Brazilian champion (Brasília, representing Vasco) and the champion of the South American League (Minas Tênis.Clube, representing Fluminense) on the Rio courts.

Flamengo fans, a heritage of Rio
Marluci Martins
Rio - The Flamengo players are on vacation, but now it's their fans who are scoring goals. After breaking record after record in the Brazilian Championship, the red-and-blacks have something else to celebrate today: Mayor Cesar Maia will sign a decree declaring Flamengo's fans a cultural asset of the city.
“Flamengo fans will become a heritage,” said the mayor, who published the decree in the Official Gazette today.
For president Márcio Braga, the fans already had this value. At the awards ceremony for the best players in the Brasileirão, he received a trophy from the CBF for managing the club with the most vibrant fan base in the competition.
"This fan base is Flamengo's greatest asset. And it will carry us to Tokyo," said the director, who received a standing ovation during his speech, although he was mistaken, as next year's Club World Cup final will be played in Yokohama.
FANS CHEERFUL
At war with the CBF over its desire for recognition of the fifth championship, the fans didn't pay much attention to the award given Monday night at the Municipal Theater. But Cesar Maia's act of declaring Flamengo fans a cultural asset of Rio de Janeiro was a huge success.
"Cesar Maia has a flaw I'll never forgive: he's a Botafogo fan. But his attitude is cool. I'll let the guys know," said José Carlos Peruano, leader of Urubu Rei.
As for the CBF award...
"Ricardo Teixeira invented this award as a way to silence the fans. It's fair; Flamengo fans, one of the wonders of the world, deserve to win over 1.000 awards, but what we want is for him, with the stroke of a pen, to recognize our fifth title," added Peruano.
The Gávea club has been making the pages of the Official Gazette with some assiduity. After all, Flamengo Day was already declared on October 28th, and Flamengo Day on November 17th.
Flamengo's board changes its stance and Roger's permanence is uncertain
Rio - After a two-hour meeting at the Gávea headquarters, coach Joel Santana and the Flamengo board began planning the formation of the group that will compete in the 2008 season. According to information from Rádio Tupi, the vice-president of football at the Gávea club, Kléber Leite, revealed that 80% of the Flamengo group will be maintained for next year's Copa Libertadores.
However, the news came from the board's change of heart regarding the player's continued contract. While Kléber Leite is sparing no effort to keep the player at the club, it's rumored that some of the coaching staff disagree with the player's renewal. Coach Joel Santana evaded the issue.
"This is a technical committee. Everything here at Flamengo is always discussed, because we need to exchange ideas. I really like Roger, he's an excellent guy, but we're still evaluating," commented the coach.
According to Kléber Leite, Flamengo fans can expect little news during the signing period.
"We're only bringing in three or four reinforcements. This group has good quality and they're well-coordinated," said Kléber Leite.
Flamengo may swap Gérson Magrão for Roger
Rio - Corinthians demanded R$500 to release midfielder Roger to Flamengo permanently. The São Paulo club expressed interest in signing Gérson Magrão, who played and excelled for Ipatinga in the Brazilian Championship's Série B campaign. In this case, Gérson Magrão would be used as a bargaining chip so that Flamengo could find a way to retain Roger without having to shell out any money.
At Gávea, only vice president of football Kléber Leite is pushing to keep Roger at the club. Leite has already reached an agreement with Corinthians president Andres Sanchez to renew Roger's contract for another three years, with only the payment remaining.

Flamengo's appeal has a new date set
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - With its Copa Libertadores spot already in hand, Flamengo will once again be tried by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD). After having its trial postponed due to a lack of a minimum number of auditors, the Rubro-negro will attempt to overturn the R$10 fine and the loss of home-field advantage on December 13th, before the Plenary. The club had been punished for objects thrown onto the Maracanã pitch during the match against Grêmio, held on October 21st. However, the team's legal department obtained a stay of execution, preventing the team from playing without its fans against Atlético Paranaense.
If the penalty is upheld, Flamengo will serve it in the first round of the 2008 Brazilian Championship. The Rubro-negro was charged under article 213 of the CBJD (failure to take measures capable of preventing and repressing disorders in its sports arena).
Fla may give Gérson Magrão to Timão to keep Roger
Gazeta Press
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Flamengo is looking to secure some reinforcements for 2008 to compete in the Copa Libertadores, the Brazilian Championship, and the Campeonato Carioca. Reports of possible deals involving Flamengo and Corinthians are beginning to circulate in the corridors of Gávea. The first negotiation between the two clubs involves midfielder Roger, who is not part of the São Paulo club's plans and has agreed to a three-year contract renewal with Flamengo.
To pay for the player, Flamengo will transfer left-back Gérson Magrão to Timão, who also plays in midfield and was one of the highlights in Ipatinga-MG's promotion to Série A. The athlete was not used by Rubro-Negro and ended up being loaned to the Minas Gerais club in the middle of this year.
Other transactions could still be on the agenda for discussions between the teams. Adding fuel to the rumors is the relationship between Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, and Corinthians president Andrés Sanchez, who have become very close in recent weeks, with both exchanging public compliments.
Flamengo fans are listed as a Cultural Asset of Rio
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - After having the dates of Flamengo Day (November 17) and Flamenguista Day (October 28) recorded in the Rio de Janeiro Official Gazette, Flamengo will receive another tribute: next Wednesday, Rio's City Hall will publish a decree in the Official Gazette listing Flamengo's fan base as a Cultural Asset of the City.\ The information was released on Mayor Cesar Maia's blog and marks a year in which Flamengo fans returned to the headlines for their massive presence, especially at games at the Maracanã.\
The club finished the Brazilian Championship in first place in total attendance – 745.207 fans in 19 games. Flamengo also leads the way with an average attendance of 39.221, more than ten thousand ahead of São Paulo, who finished second.
Therefore, the presence in the stands is seen as fundamental for the team's recovery, which went from second-to-last place to finish the National Championship in third place, guaranteeing a place in the Libertadores.

Flamengo begins forming its 2008 squad with renewals\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Flamengo's board met with coach Joel Santana on Tuesday and has already begun planning for next season, when the club will compete in the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Brasileiro, and the Campeonato Carioca. In terms of negotiations with players currently on the roster, Flamengo has already agreed to renew the contracts of defender Fábio Luciano, left-back Juan, Argentine midfielder Colace, and Roger himself. The club also informed Atlético-PR that it will deposit the amount corresponding to the purchase of midfielder Cristian's federation rights by the end of the year.
"Flamengo is doing the right thing. First, it needs to ensure the continued presence of those who are excelling, and then look for other standout players," said Kléber Leite, Flamengo's vice president of football.
The club is also looking elsewhere to sign reinforcements for next season. There was speculation about bringing in top scorer Washington, currently playing in Japan and a standout player in Brazil for Atlético-PR and Ponte Preta-SP. However, this player is reportedly already signed with Fluminense.
After award, president says Flamengo is the greatest team in the world
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - In a ceremony that awarded the best of the Brazilian Championship, on Monday night, in Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo confirmed its favoritism and received the trophy for best fans in the National Championship.\ Immediately after the announcement, the president of the Rio de Janeiro club, Márcio Braga, went up on stage to represent the red-black nation and praised the massive presence of fans at the team's games in the recently concluded Brasileirão.\
"This fan base is the greatest asset of the Flamengo regatta club, and will push our team towards Tokyo in 2008," said the Flamengo president, forgetting that the Club World Cup is being held in Yokohama and no longer in the Japanese capital.
"This is unequivocal proof that Flamengo is the greatest club in the world," added Márcio Braga. In addition to the award for best fan base, Flamengo also had the best right-back (Leonardo Moura) and midfielder (Ibson) in the Brazilian Championship.
São Paulo president expects the polka dot cup in January
Marcelo Belpiede, special envoy
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - As expected, only the trophy for winning the 2007 edition was present at the official Brazilian Championship celebrations, held this Monday at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro. However, São Paulo president Juvenal Juvêncio hinted that he will receive the polka-dot trophy, corresponding to the fifth national championship, early next year. "It'll come in January," said the director, who nodded when asked if he had official information from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
During the party, some Flamengo fans let out a five-time champion chant. Juvenal Juvêncio thought it was an expected reaction. "There were some Flamengo fan protests here, but it was mild; I didn't see anything out of the ordinary."
Flamengo president Márcio Braga also adopted a polite stance when addressing the issue. He considers São Paulo a legitimate five-time champion, but believes the trophy should be sent to Gávea.
"I don't have any confirmation yet, but Brazil, over 180 million people, know that Flamengo has won the fifth World Cup for 15 years. Now we have to ask the CBF president what's going to happen. He's the one in charge," he stated.
Among the players, striker Dagoberto considered the Flamengo fans' demonstration to be folklore. Before the CBF celebration, a group of fans staged a protest at the entrance to the Municipal Theater. "I think it's actually cool; it's part of football," commented the Tricolor athlete.
In response, right-back Leonardo Moura believes the CBF will rule in Flamengo's favor. "We're hoping the trophy stays in Gávea," concluded the player, who was the best player in his position at the official Brazilian Championship awards ceremony.
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - A group of about 20 Flamengo fans gathered outside the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater on Monday night to protest the awarding of the Brazilian Championship trophy to São Paulo. The CBF is hosting the "Craque do Brasileirão" award ceremony. This year, Brazil's governing body officially declared São Paulo the only five-time national champion. The dispute dates back to 1987, when the Flamengo won the Copa União, a competition created after the split between the Clube dos 13 and the "Club dos 13." Sport, which competed in the Módulo Verde, is considered the winner that year.
The fans brought a band to the theater's entrance, as well as a large rubber hand with Flamengo's five titles on each finger (80, 82, 83, 87 and 92). Regarding the 1987 title, an arrow explains the reason for the protest.
"Ricardo Teixeira is trying to create a problem for a nation. He needs to decide soon. Our problem isn't even with São Paulo, but with Ricardo Teixeira. He can even give the trophy to both of them, but the old one is ours. Give São Paulo a replica. The '87 championship was the best in history, with 16 clubs, it had great fan appeal, and it must be recognized," explained Marcel Tijolo, organizer of the protest.
Upon arriving at the awards ceremony, Flamengo president Márcio Braga reacted sarcastically to the protest. "I came here to receive the trophy on behalf of the fans. She's our best player," the Gávea club's president said.

Coach Joel Santana could "take" Roger from Flamengo
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Last Thursday, Flamengo announced Roger would stay at Gávea for another three seasons. But this Tuesday, according to Joel Santana, everything could change. The coach hinted that he needs to have a conversation with his coaching staff first.
Midfielder Roger (left) could leave Flamengo
"I'll speak with the physical trainers and also with my assistant coaches. An assessment will be made and we'll pass it on to Flamengo's management," he said.
To permanently sign Roger, Flamengo must pay US$500 to Corinthians by December 31st. If this happens, Corinthians will acquire the athlete's federation rights.
Still this Tuesday morning, Flamengo's football director, Marcos Braz, in an interview with UOL Esporte, warned that Corinthians would be interested in winger Gérson Magrão, who played in Série B for Ipatinga-MG, but has a contract with Rubro-Negro until the end of 2009.
With the São Paulo club keeping the player, the $500 fee would be reduced. "There's a possibility of doing this deal, since we're interested in keeping Roger and Corinthians is interested in Gérson Magrão," he said.
To keep Roger, Fla must give Gérson Magrão to Corinthians
Bruno Rousso\ In Rio de Janeiro\
In an agreement reached with the former Corinthians board, Flamengo agreed to pay US$500 by December 31st to acquire Roger's federation rights. Flamengo already has the means to pay off this debt. The intention is to include winger Gérson Magrão, a standout player for Ipatinga during their promotion to the Brazilian Championship's Série A campaign, in the negotiations. The São Paulo club has already expressed interest in the player.
Midfielder Roger still belongs to Corinthians and could be swapped for Gérson Magrão\ LATEST FLAMENGO NEWS\ The "swap", however, won't be as simple as it seems. According to Flamengo's football director, Marcos Braz, a new agreement will have to be reached with Corinthians so that no one is left out.\
"There is a possibility of us doing this deal, since we are interested in keeping Roger and Corinthians is interested in Gérson, who still has a contract with us (until the end of 2009)," said the director, adding later.
"But we're going to have to sit down and talk about this. We have to price everything and reach a new agreement so that the deal is fair for all parties," he stressed.
Marcos Braz will meet at 15 p.m. this Tuesday with Flamengo's vice-president of football, Kleber Leite, and coach Joel Santana to discuss the 2008 plan. Among many topics on the agenda is the negotiation involving Roger and Gérson Magrão.
A Monday of awards for Flamengo
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
The red-and-blacks enjoyed a Monday of awards ceremonies thanks to their strong performance in the Brazilian Championship. Full-back Leonardo Moura was the highlight of the day, winning two trophies. Earlier in the afternoon, he was named the competition's best right-back by Placar magazine, receiving the "Silver Ball" at ESPN Brasil's headquarters in São Paulo. That evening, he won another trophy at the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) party at Rio's Municipal Theater.
Flamengo's other "champion" was Ibson, chosen by the CBF as the best right midfielder in the competition. The club was also awarded for having the "best fans" in the Brazilian Championship.
Two other players and coach Joel Santana also received awards, but not gold trophies. Defender Fábio Luciano won bronze, and left-back Juan won silver, as did the coach.

Despite being a self-proclaimed Botafogo fan, Rio de Janeiro Mayor César Maia recognized the club's brilliant performance in the Brazilian Championship and will designate it as a Cultural Asset of the City. The tribute will be published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday.
Flamengo fans helped the team average 39.221 spectators at games. This is the third "award" received by the club in 2007, the year in which Flamengo Day (celebrated on November 17) and Flamenguista Day (October 28) were declared.
The Rubro-Negro had the highest average attendance in the Brazilian Championship, with 39.221 spectators per home game. Furthermore, they had eight of the ten largest attendances in the competition. According to the players, the fans' support was crucial for the team's "soaring" from 19th to third place in the National Championship, securing a spot in the Copa Libertadores.
For their outstanding performance, Flamengo fans received a trophy on Monday during the Brazilian Championship's Best Player Awards, organized by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The award was presented to club president Márcio Braga, who delivered a passionate speech on behalf of all Flamengo fans.
Flamengo could lose Cristian to Russian football
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo fans may receive some very bad news in the coming days. Midfielder Cristian is expected to leave Flamengo for Russia, specifically Lokomotiv Moscow.
As Flamengo acquired 50% of Cristian's federation rights last week (the other half belongs to Atlético-PR), Rubro-Negro could earn around R$3 million from the sale.
Cristian was one of Flamengo's standout players in the Brazilian Championship. The defensive midfielder joined the club in mid-July. During this period, he scored one goal, giving Flamengo a 1-0 victory over Atlético-MG.
Kléberson eager to debut for Fla
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Signed during the Brazilian Championship, midfielder Kléberson has yet to make his debut for Flamengo. Due to the registration deadline for the national competition, the five-time world champion has been limited to training with his new teammates, a situation far from ideal for the player.
"I'm underweight and running at a much slower pace than the others. The preseason will be very good so I can be on the same level as the other players. I'm eager and anxious. I just have to wait for the start of the State Championship so I can make my debut," he said.
Despite not having played a single match for Rubro-Negro yet, Kléberson is already feeling at home in Gávea and is declaring his love for his new home.
"Joel (Santana, coach) said something very important. He said that to play for Flamengo you need to love the club. And I can say that I love Flamengo," the midfielder emphasized.

Fla makes offer to MSI for Bruno
The club wants to buy the goalkeeper's economic rights, and Kléber Leite is excited.
Eduardo Peixoto From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
Bruno's economic rights are held by MSI, a former partner of Corinthians.
Flamengo took the first step on Tuesday to transform goalkeeper Bruno into its "Rogério Ceni": the club sent MSI a proposal to buy the player's economic rights.
The offered amount was passed to Bruno's agent, Eduardo Uram, who will be responsible for presenting the offer to Kia Joorabchian, a former Corinthians partner. Vice president Kléber Leite believes the story will have a happy ending.
- I'm very excited, I fully believe that Bruno will stay at Flamengo for a long time. I never thought otherwise - says the director.
On the same day that Rubro-Negro formalized the proposal for Bruno, news emerged that the club was interested in Felipe, from Corinthians, to replace the number 1. However, Kléber denied this and stated that it was Bragantino, owner of 25% of the goalkeeper's economic rights, who approached the Gávea club to offer the athlete.
Fla, Flu and CBF together at Maracanã
A foreign company would be responsible for managing the stadium and dividing it between the three partners
Eduardo Peixoto From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
Maracanã could be divided between Fla, Flu and CBF
The much-talked-about battle for control of the Maracanã could end in a stalemate. On Monday, representatives from Flamengo, Fluminense, and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) met at a law firm in Rio de Janeiro to discuss the stadium's bidding process, which has yet to be set.
The project is still in the development phase. However, the English company IMG, responsible for the reconstruction of Wembley, would manage the stadium and be responsible for securing funding to run it. This way, Flamengo, Fluminense, and the CBF would play for free there and share the profits.
"But of course, whoever brings more fans to the stadium, that is, Flamengo, will have a higher percentage. Everything is still to be evaluated, but initially we're pleased," says Flamengo president Márcio Braga.
Fluminense president Roberto Horcades is also optimistic about the outcome of the possible agreement.
"Of course it's solid. Both Ricardo Teixeira and Márcio Braga are my patients," the cardiologist joked.

Dunga: 'Ibson needs to play well more often'
National team coach praises Flamengo midfielder, but says it's still too early to call him up
Thiago Fernandes From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
A favorite of Flamengo fans, Ibson was praised by the Brazilian national team coach. The news that every Flamengo fan has been waiting for may be delayed a little longer. Brazilian national team coach Dunga praised midfielder Ibson during an event at the Bola pra Frente Institute, but stated that for the player to be called up, he needs to maintain the level of his recent performances for a longer period.
"How long has Ibson been playing well? Two months? He's in good shape, but he needs to maintain that level. I watched a few of his games at Porto and he was good, but he didn't make it. Mineiro, for example, has been performing well for a long time," he says.
Fla backtracks and Roger may leave
Coach Joel Santana warns that he needs to study the cost-benefit ratio of the supporter
Eduardo Peixoto From GLOBOESPORTE.COM,
The permanence of midfielder Roger for 2008 is not yet confirmed
Flamengo and midfielder Roger had announced a three-year deal last week. However, the coaching staff's reticence regarding the player changed the situation.
Coach Joel Santana says he will speak with physiotherapists, fitness trainers and doctors to determine whether it is worth investing in the player.
"His staying will be studied. We have to consider the cost-benefit and evaluate whether it's worth keeping him. But he's a player I like and admire," says the coach.
Flamengo had already committed to transferring midfielder Gérson Magrão to Corinthians to offset part of the $500 fee charged for Roger.
However, as GLOBOESPORTE.COM has learned, Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, is apparently isolated in the matter, and the other board members do not see keeping the player as paramount. They claim that Roger's salary would be enough to sign a younger player with more potential.
Felipe's name causes controversy at Fla
Rubro-Negro reportedly interested in the Timão goalkeeper. The board denies it and accuses Bragantino.

Felipe at Corinthians training in SP
Flamengo's qualification for the Copa Libertadores and Corinthians goalkeeper Felipe's stellar season are set to shake up the transfer market in the coming weeks. While the Red-Blacks deny any interest, initial talk in São Paulo is emerging that Corinthians' number one could appear at Gávea in 2008.
During the 2007 Craque Brasileirão Award ceremony, Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, reportedly approached Bragantino's president, Marco Antônio Abi Chedi, to discuss the possibility of loaning the player out, as Bruno was expected to go abroad. Flamengo was reportedly willing to triple Felipe's salary. Kléber, however, denied the offer.
"That's a blatant lie. It was the Bragantino team who called me saying they still owned a stake in Felipe and were offering him an offer. I told them I wasn't interested and that the priority was to keep Bruno no matter what. We're making an offer for him (Bruno), and I'm optimistic he'll stay."
Marcelo Goldfarb, Felipe's representative, also denies any contact with Rio de Janeiro officials, but admits to having information that an official proposal will be submitted to Corinthians in the coming days. The agent, however, doesn't believe Corinthians will agree to negotiate with its star player.
"There was an inquiry. Someone connected to Flamengo was supposed to come to São Paulo this week to talk. But I think it's practically impossible for Felipe to leave. He wants to stay at Corinthians, and the board is counting on him in Serie B," reveals Goldfarb, who is negotiating a salary increase for the goalkeeper.
Felipe's contract with Corinthians runs until 2011, with a $10 million contractual clause. Corinthians owns 50% of the rights. Bragantino holds 25%, while the remainder is split between the athlete and his agents.
A show of support in the Brasileirão
Fans steal the show and are the highlight of the championship with lots of celebration and creativity
Not even São Paulo's undisputed title, Flamengo's rousing comeback, or Corinthians' historic relegation to the Second Division. The highlight of the 2007 Brasileirão was the fans' participation. All across Brazil, fans packed stadiums, unleashed their creativity, and sang songs of support for their clubs. These songs leave rivalry aside, free from insults and swearing.
In Rio, it's all about Mengão
Throughout the championship, no one filled the stadium more than Flamengo fans. From a team threatened with relegation until the Pan American Games in Rio, the Red-Blacks shifted into high gear, fired up the turbo, and went on to claim third place in the standings and one of the four spots in the 2008 Copa Libertadores. But their rise wouldn't have been as strong without the fuel called the Red-Black Nation. Round after round, they broke record after record. Of the ten largest attendances in the championship, the Red-Blacks had eight. The largest was achieved at the team's last game at Maracanã, on November 25th: 82.044 paying spectators. And the unity of so many people could only result in a spectacle. During the campaign, Flamengo's Victory Theme was created. The lyrics of the song were featured on the Maracanã screens and became popular (watch the video above).
Orlando Silva advocates changes to the Pelé Law
Minister says legislation needs to be revised to make it harder for athletes to leave
Márcio Iannacca and Thiago Lavinas From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
Sports Minister Orlando Silva advocates changes to the Pelé Law. Sports Minister Orlando Silva said Tuesday during the opening of the 4th Footecon, the International Football Forum, in Rio de Janeiro, that the Federal Government is concerned about the excessive departure of Brazilian players to foreign clubs. Therefore, it is considering changes to the legislation to allow athletes to stay in the country longer. The Pelé Law, introduced in the late 90s, gave players more independence regarding contracts. Footecon is broadcast live on SporTV.
"The Pelé Law deserves some reflection. It's been ten years, and there hasn't been a transition during that time. While I affirm that the Pelé Law was very important, I also believe the legislation needs to be revised. This isn't just my opinion, but Pelé's as well. So that the club that invests in the athlete's development receives some compensation for it. You can't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs," said Orlando Silva, who cited a bill that could change the legislation governing the relationship between athletes and clubs.
- We have a bill, 5186, that adjusts the relationship between the club and the athlete. It establishes the rights of the training club over an athlete. We see athletes as young as 12 and 13 with agents. The idea is to prohibit this, but the subject is controversial. This was a project that was being developed alongside Timemania, but it ended up being left behind. Now it will be analyzed by the Sports and Tourism Committee, and President Lula has encouraged this project.
For the minister, the departure of athletes is not an economic problem
Orlando Silva revealed that the Federal Government is listening to the opinions of football coaches regarding changes to the legislation.
"Luxembourg made a suggestion. He believes the ideal is to register athletes at 12 to ensure the club is responsible for training them. I've talked to other people. Felipão supports the project, and so does Parreira.
The Minister assured that the departure of Brazilian players abroad would not be an economic problem.
- Some people say the problem is Brazil's GDP. And they say that's why football isn't growing. But countries like Turkey, Ukraine, Portugal, and others have lower GDPs than ours and hire our athletes.

Basketball: Fla travels to Macaé this Wednesday
Gávea team goes in search of a place in the Carioca final
STAR OF THE FUTURE
The first match between Flamengo and Liga Macaense in the semifinals of the Rio de Janeiro Basketball Championship will be this Thursday. However, the team from Gávea will travel to the Lagos Region this Wednesday.
Coach Paulo Chupeta's team will hold a training session this Wednesday morning, starting at 10:30 a.m. Soon after, at 13 p.m., the team will travel and hit the road. The afternoon will be off, but on Thursday morning the team will practice shooting in the gymnasium where the game will be played.
For center Coloneze, traveling a day in advance is good for the team to get a feel for the city, and also to train on the opponent's court.
- It's always good to arrive early and be able to get to know the court and also feel the atmosphere of the match - said the player.
Flamengo and Liga Macaense have faced each other twice in this competition. Both times, Flamengo prevailed. Playing at home, the team won 97-78. In Macaé, the victory was more difficult, with a score of 101-99.
Ibson thanks Flamengo for their support
Supporter admits good phase and makes plans for 2008
LANCEPRESS!
Ibson is doing well: since returning to Flamengo mid-year, he's led the team to next year's Libertadores, was named the best right-midfielder in the Brasileirão at a CBF awards ceremony, and is in the fans' good graces. The fan humbled, admitting he's doing well, still thanks those who helped him regain his playing style.
radio l! - I went through some bad times, but, thank God, with the support of my family, my teammates, the coaching staff and this wonderful crowd, I managed to turn things around - he said. (Click and listen)
Happy with Flamengo's great form, Ibson is already setting goals for 2008. The midfielder wants the Rubro-Negro to do well in all of the year's tournaments and, therefore, is asking for the squad's full commitment from the start of the season.

Midfielder Cristian is expected to play in Russian football

LANCEPRESS!
Cristian is unlikely to stay at Gávea next year. The defensive midfielder has an offer from Lokomotiv Moscow. The Russian club is reportedly willing to pay €2,5 million (equivalent to 100% of his economic rights) for the player.
Flamengo's vice president of football, Kléber Leite, denied the midfielder's departure, but ended up getting his words mixed up when answering the question.
"No player has received any offers to leave, only Cristian. We have no intention of selling him," stated the club's director.
But LANCE! has learned that the offer exists and that there is a real and strong possibility of the player being traded to Russian football.
As 50% of the player's rights belong to Atlético Paranaense, Fla should receive around 1,25 million euros (equivalent to R$3,2 million).
As it paid US$500 (R$894), the board would profit around R$2,3 million from the deal.
Kleber says Fla will make few signings
Flamengo will be able to count on Kleberson next season
LANCEPRESS!
After a successful season this year, in which Flamengo won the Rio de Janeiro championship and qualified for the Copa Libertadores after a great campaign in the Brasileirão, the Rubro-Negro's vice-president of football, Kleber Leite, promised few signings for 2008.
"Flamengo will make three or four signings who will come to play. Some who are out will return and stay. Others will remain out. If necessary, we will turn to the youth players," Kleber revealed to Rádio Tupi.
It's worth noting that Flamengo already has a reinforcement for next season. Midfielder Kleberson was signed in September of this year, but after leaving his former club, Besiktas, citing unpaid wages, he was suspended for four months and was unable to play in the Brasileirão.
Flamengo Juniors play this Wednesday
Adílio's team faces Paulista in the second round of the Brazilian Championship in the category
After a 1-0 opening victory over Palmeiras in the Brazilian Junior Championship, Flamengo returns to action this Wednesday. Their opponent will be Paulista at 15:30 p.m. in Rio Grande do Sul, where the competition is being held.
This will be the debut for the São Paulo team, which had the first round bye. In the group's other game, Palmeiras faces Internacional, who beat Náutico 2-1 in their opening match.
Joel Santana asks for players with resumes
Coach doesn't want reinforcements without experience or success in football
After a three-hour meeting with Flamengo's board, coach Joel Santana left without discussing potential reinforcements for next season. However, the coach did give a hint about the profile of players Flamengo should be looking for.
The coach would like to have some more experienced players available for the Libertadores. Since he trusts the current squad, Joel wants to bring in players with winning track records to add to the mix:
"We need to look at the player's resume. If he doesn't have one, he won't surpass the players here. If we can't find those players, we'll fill out the squad with the youth players," Joel stated.
While no new signings are forthcoming to reinforce Flamengo, players who were on loan will return. This includes Vinícius Pacheco, who is at Paraná, Fabiano Oliveira at Goiás, and Felipe Dias at Náutico.
Joel prioritizes base over mid-range
Coach says that if strong names don't arrive, he will bet on homegrown talent
Having been on vacation for just two days, Joel Santana is already thinking about Flamengo's 2008 campaign, outlining the team's needs for a strong record next year. Regarding signings, the Man with the Clipboard says they should only be made if the new players are significant. If that isn't the case, he'll opt for players from the youth teams.
"We'll talk to our vice president of football (Kléber Leite) and the coaching staff. However, we need to bring in players who are ready to play. If we're going to bet on a mediocre player, I'd rather go with the academy," he said in a statement to TV Bandeirantes.
Joel listed some of the names that already interest him from the team managed by Adílio, highlighting that the successes achieved by the players in the junior category should guarantee quality.
"On a three-time junior champion team, someone has to be good. Kayke, Thiago Salles, and Rômulo are good examples of this. Paulo Sérgio is another. We've already brought these players up to speed with the goal of familiarizing them with a professional squad, taking them to training camps and lectures. I repeat: I only want players ready to play," he concludes.
Marcio Braga says he was going to win the Penta Cup
President reveals that if CBF handed over the trophy he would run to get it
Rodrigo Mandarini RIO DE JANEIRO
The big winner at the awards ceremony for the best in the Brasileirão, held this Monday at Rio's Municipal Theater, was São Paulo. However, the expected presentation of the Five-Time Brazilian Champion's Trophy, the coveted Bolinhas Cup, to the Tricolor never took place. After the controversy surrounding Flamengo, which claims to be a five-time champion as well, having won the Green Module of the 1987 Copa União, the CBF opted not to create an unpleasant situation.
What if the CBF's decision was to call the five-time Brazilian champion to the stage to receive the Trophy? In that case, the representatives of the Tricolor Paulista would have to race to get it before someone in the second row of the Municipal Theater audience.
"If they announced it, I'd run and get the trophy. It's been ours for 15 years. Everyone knows we're five-time champions; 187 million Brazilians know that. All that's left is to grab the trophy from the Caixa Econômica Federal vault and take it to Gávea," Flamengo president Marcio Braga told LANCENET!.
While the Red-Black team hasn't yet won the trophy it desires, its fans were honored by the CBF. And it was up to president Marcio Braga to receive the golden fan trophy.
"This is yet another recognition for the fans of the greatest club in the world. These fans will carry us to Tokyo in 2008," the president enthused, referring to the FIFA Club World Cup.
