Flamengo 2008 version prepared to correct last year's mistakes
Disappointment in the Libertadores leaves the club more mature for the season

TERESÓPOLIS. Flamengo's eagerly anticipated participation in the 2007 Copa Libertadores ended in disappointment. After revising its 2008 plan, the club returns to the tournament with a different outlook. With a solid foundation in place, it changed its recruitment approach and preseason planning, which began yesterday at Granja Comary in Teresópolis.
On Monday, football coordinator Sérgio Helt will travel to Peru, where he will evaluate hotels, training grounds, and travel options. The club, which is still deciding whether to charter a flight, could stay and train in Tacna, where it will debut against Coronel Bolognesi on February 13th, or train in Lima.

While the club made 2007 signings for the 14 Libertadores, many of them considered gambles, Flamengo's strong performance in the Brazilian Championship led them to believe in their youth academy and bring in five reinforcements. The preseason follows a new model. In 2007, the team stayed in Rio for the first two weeks. Closer to home, the players asked to resolve personal issues. In 2008, the team left the city the day after the presentation.
The roster's profile has changed. Three-time state junior champion Flamengo has 28 players in its squad—11 of whom came through the youth academy. In 2007, of the 25 players registered for the Libertadores, six were Gávea players. With more experience, the club pays attention to the smallest details.
"We failed to plan for the knockout stage. Away from home, you have to play to avoid conceding a goal," said football manager Isaías Tinoco.
The club has not yet signed a contract with Petrobras and is trying to renegotiate its contract. Recently, São Paulo, Corinthians, and Palmeiras announced contracts worth more than the R$15,5 million a year that Flamengo receives, without the right to other uniform sponsors.
The club is listing advantages for partners willing to invest in Ronaldo's signing. Through the Milan striker's agent, Fabiano Farah, LG and TIM, the player's sponsor, were approached.
Vice President of Football Kléber Leite admitted interest in Colombian Falcao García, of River Plate, whom Joel Santana has praised. Leite considers his signing difficult, as the player has stated his intention to stay in Argentina. Goalkeeper Bruno has not yet renewed his contract, which is expected to be for another five years. The latest name being speculated for Flamengo's attack this year is striker Falcão Garcia, who has been offered to the club. However, vice president of football Kleber Leite assured that nothing is official and that signing the player is unlikely, despite there being interest.
"I have a good relationship with the River people, I've already learned about his situation, and it's very difficult. There's been nothing more than a search on the player. It's a high amount, and he'll only come if Flamengo carries out a deal with partners," explained the director.

"I've had offers from several clubs and just playing here at Flamengo makes me feel important," the player added.

Granja Comary belongs to the CBF and is used for training Brazilian national teams of all ages. But from this Friday until January 15th, the facility has a new owner. The red and black flag on one of the training center's flagpoles indicates that Flamengo has arrived. Beside it, the Brazilian flag also flies.
"It's a habit on every trip here. We bring it from Rio, and Tião (a Granja employee) puts it up high. It looks beautiful," says Ivan, one of the people responsible for transporting the Rubro-Negro's sports equipment.
And bad luck for the Brazilian women's under-17 team. With the Granja facilities occupied by the Rubro-Negro, the girls are staying in a hotel at the entrance to the city in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro and training on fields 3 and 4 - Flamengo has fields 1 and 2.
In their first activity in Teresópolis, the red-and-black players worked out in the Granja pool. They then complemented the activity with physical exercises.

Flamengo will have 29 players in preseason training at Granja Comary. But midfielder Marcinho won't be present until Sunday. He was cleared by the coaching staff to attend his sister's wedding this Saturday.
Two other players currently at Granja have not yet signed contracts with the club: goalkeeper Bruno and midfielder Jônatas. The two players' situations should be resolved next week, with the return of agent Eduardo Uram, who represents both players.
In Jônatas' case, Espanyol's release is still pending. Bruno has already reached a verbal agreement with Flamengo, but the deal has not yet been finalized.
Previously selected for preseason, striker Paulo Sergio will compete in the São Paulo Junior Cup. The 30th and final spot in the group will likely go to the striker the board intends to sign.
Flamengo will remain at Granja Comary until January 15th. The State Championship debut will take place on February 20th.

Midfielder Marcinho, one of Flamengo's new signings for the Libertadores Cup, is experiencing the Rio summer firsthand. Coming from Atlético-MG, he's been struggling with the intense heat during training at Gávea. Temperatures in recent days have reached 38°C, a bit much for someone accustomed to the milder climate of Belo Horizonte.
"I wasn't used to this heat. Rio is a beautiful city, and I've received a lot of affection from the fans here. I hope to do my job well and earn my place on the team," says the player.
Marcinho plays in the area where the team has strengthened the most. He's aware that the fight for a spot in midfield will be fierce.
"It's a difficult task; whoever wants to stay on the team will have to do very well. I want to do my part and earn the coach's trust. Flamengo always enters competitions to win, and playing in the Libertadores, that responsibility increases," he says.
Despite the competition in midfield, Marcinho prefers not to "carve out" a spot alongside Souza in attack. He says the responsibility for starting the team and defining the positions on the field falls entirely on coach Joel Santana.
"We have quality attackers, but I'll leave that to Joel to decide. I'm here to help," he concludes.

Kleberson is excited about his return date approaching
Having not played an official match since April 15, 2007, when he was playing for Besiktas in Turkey, midfielder Kleberson is struggling to regain his fitness and match rhythm. He headed to Granja Comary in Teresópolis, where Flamengo is conducting its preseason, with the goal of intense preparation for his debut with the red-and-black jersey. The midfielder will be legally fit to play starting January 26.
"Physical fitness won't be a problem. I've had a knack for it since my time at Atlético-PR. The biggest problem would be match rhythm," he says.
Despite having been at Gávea for a few months now, Kleberson says he's not fully settled in. He believes he'll only fully gel when he's actually training with the team.
"Since I arrived at Flamengo, my thoughts have been focused on this year. I have many goals, and I'm going to dedicate myself fully to this preseason. I want to take advantage of these first training sessions to better adapt to the group," he says.

This weekend, the club's vice-president, Kléber Leite, will split his time between Granja Comary, in Teresópolis, and his home in Corrêas, a district in the mountainous region.
The manager rules out any signings in the next two days.
"We won't have any news. Things can only get going from Monday onwards," he says.
Diego Tardelli is still on Flamengo's list for attack. But negotiations have suffered a setback in recent days. Colombian Falcao Garcia is nothing more than a dream. The Ronaldo case is "outside" this agenda.
There's also still a wait for Jônatas's documentation. The midfielder's official presentation is expected to take place on Monday.

Signs of optimism and confidence for 2008 were evident at Gávea this Friday. Some tried to mask the excitement sparked by the team's return, such as coach Joel Santana. But familiar and new faces also showed fans hope for titles.
All of the new signings (defender Rodrigo, holding midfielders Jônatas, Kleberson, and Gavilán, midfielder Marcinho, and forward Éder) were at the club this morning, when fitness tests began. Under the guidance of coach Ronaldo Torres, the new players and those who were already with the club in 2007 began preseason training, which will be held at Granja Comary.
The group of around 30 players travels this Friday to the city of Teresópolis, in the mountainous region of the state, where they will stay until the 15th. The return was brought forward to better adapt to the heat of the capital, aiming for the debut in the State Championship, against Boavista, on January 20th, at Maracanã.
During the first week, the emphasis will be on the physical aspect. Joel Santana, who tried unsuccessfully to hide his optimism, will be a keen observer and should only lead tactical work starting on the 9th.
"Suddenly the team looks good on paper, but it doesn't work on the field. We've kept 90% of our youth players, and we're also confident in the newcomers, as they're ready to be starters," Joel said, noting that he'll be held accountable for results.
Not only in the Libertadores, but also in the Carioca, where the club could equal Fluminense's 30 titles. But he sees other teams as strong.
"Gávea is happy, but happiness without winning doesn't exist. Especially here. Christmas was beautiful, New Year's was wonderful, but I was already missing the Flamengo fans. Now there's nothing missing. It's going to be a dangerous championship. We're not talking about preseason, but about a high season to start the year strong," commented the folkloric Joel, who is just waiting for the signings for the attack (Ronaldo and Diego Tardelli) to be finalized.

For Marcelinho, the main highlight of Flamengo's victory in the 2007 Campeonato Carioca, the team still has to work out some details, and therefore, will not have a great performance right at the beginning of the National, which, for him, is normal.
"The team is still finding its feet. We're training to strengthen ourselves. Of course, the start will still be at a level below our potential, but I believe that as the games go on, we'll gain momentum and grow," he stated.
The 32-year-old winger believes that winning the National Championship is the main objective for the red-and-black basketball team. For the experienced player, winning the State Championship could contribute to a strong campaign in the new competition.
"Our team was built to win titles. We set two major goals. The first was the Carioca Championship in the first half of the year, and we managed to win it, losing only one game. Now we need to keep going and win the National Championship as well," he analyzed.

It's been a busy week at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium. The Flamengo team returned to training on January 2nd and has been training in two shifts, with an eye on the team's first match in the 2008 National Men's Basketball Championship. The match will take place against Univates/Bira, next Sunday, January 6th, at 13 p.m., in Lajeado, Rio Grande do Sul.
During training, coach Paulo Chupeta gave his pivots special instructions. According to him, the team has good players at the position and needs to take advantage of this both defensively and offensively.
"We have four good pivots (Coloneze, Alírio, Maicon, and Wagner). We have to use that. The role of this position is also to score. We have to keep our opponents worried in the paint," he stated.
For Chupeta, the team cannot be dependent on winger Marcelinho, who despite having only arrived in September, was Fla's top scorer in 2007, with 432 points in 17 matches.
"Sometimes Marcelo gets the ball and everyone stands still, cheering him on. That can't happen. The team has to move and call the play. The team has to memorize the movement and make it come naturally," he advised.
One of the starters in the position (pivot), Fernando Coloneze believes that the red-black team has everything to take advantage of the opportunity and manage to take the National title to Gávea.

Vinícius Pacheco and Fabiano Oliveira, who were on loan to Paraná Clube and Goiás, respectively, reported to Gávea on Thursday. However, both players were released and did not participate in training.
