To shine at Flamengo, Kléberson says he needs to do more than he did in the 2002 World Cup

TERESÓPOLIS. When Brazilian fans think of Kléberson, the last image that comes to mind is of a defensive midfielder and coach, a young man who oozed personality, almost by surprise becoming a starter and one of the national team's standout players at the 2002 World Cup. Winning the fifth title seemed like the starting point of a meteoric rise. However, since then, few images of Kléberson have surfaced. At Flamengo, he insists he's not rushing to recapture the style of five years ago. He wants to prove he can do more:
- The 2002 World Cup was a magical moment. But at Flamengo, I'll need to strive and do much more. The doors have opened again, and I need to respond.
Manchester's dream halted by strong English marking
His World Cup success led him to Manchester United in England. Upon his arrival, what seemed like a fairy tale turned into a disappointment.
"I think everything happened at the right time for me. But I had some bumps along the way. In England, I encountered a physical contact style of football and felt I was too weak. Later, I was placed on the wing, sometimes almost as a winger," Kléberson recalls. "There, the back four rarely leave the defense. There was no space. I had to go after the marker. That's not my style."
After two years in England, he went to Turkey:
- I even started in my position. Then, I became a defensive midfielder, once again deviating from my usual stance.
Signed in September of last year, Kléberson will have to wait until January 26th for the FIFA ban to end. The player left Besiktas citing unpaid wages, but was punished for abandoning the club. The midfielder, who hasn't played since May 2007, will miss the first few games of the State Championship, which could jeopardize his chances of a midfield spot.
"I find it easy to regain my fitness. My problem will probably be rhythm. But I'm motivated to overcome everything and win titles," said the five-time champion, a mix of joy and anxiety. "Last year, I trained, but not as hard because I couldn't play. Now, I feel integrated into the group."
Due to his contact with the ball, Kléberson will have to wait a little longer. The first training session could take place on Wednesday. On the 13th, Flamengo will play a friendly against the Benin national team at Granja Comary.
The recipe against doping
At a time when doping cases are rife and the market is offering products that promise improved health and performance, Flamengo decided to take action. Yesterday, doctor Serafim Borges gave a lecture to the players, warning them about the risks of self-medication and the use of products like energy drinks, which are becoming increasingly popular on the market.
Serafim explained to the players that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) updates its list of prohibited substances year after year, making it crucial that players only use medications prescribed by club doctors. He also warned about other ways athletes could ingest performance-enhancing drugs.
"There are treatments that a player's wife may be undergoing, and a substance may be ingested during sexual intercourse," said Serafim, who commented on the health risks, especially to the heart, of drug use: "Our concern is for the athlete's future. We talk about doping, but also about health aspects that are important for life." (CEM)

Although Flamengo's historic run in the last Brazilian Championship was also linked to the growth of the midfield, the midfield is expected to be significantly changed in the team's Carioca debut on the 20th against Boavista at Maracanã. And one of that team's hard-working players will have to work hard to stay in the starting lineup.
Midfielder Cristian, who joined the Red-Blacks midway through last year, finished 2007 with a lot of prestige, but with the signings of Kleberson, Jônatas, and Gavilán, he'll have a lot of work to do to maintain his place in the starting lineup. This, however, isn't a concern for him.
"There's no clause in my contract that forces me to start or that would make me angry about being a reserve. Keeping the player was one of coach Joel Santana's requests for this season. After agreeing to purchase 50% of his economic rights from Atlético-PR, Flamengo almost lost the player. This was because Lokomotiv Moscow offered approximately $2 million to sign him. The change in coaching at the Russian team and Cristian's desire to stay ultimately played a role.
"I never showed any interest in leaving. I'm actually happy that they approached me, but my mind is still here. After that initial approach, they never approached me again," he explained.
If Cristian isn't yet certain about his starting lineup, the same can't be said for midfielder Kleberson. Yesterday, he analyzed a midfield with Jônatas, Ibson, and Renato Augusto:
"It's an excellent environment, with very high-quality players. I don't know what Joel's thinking, but although none of these names are professional strikers, they can play together," predicted Kleberson, who hasn't played since April 15, 2007, and should be fit to play from January 27.
In addition to the five-time world champion from 2002, Cristian will have to compete for a starting spot with Gavilán, Ibson, and Jônatas. Of these, the favorites to start are the latter two, but since Cristian has already shown that overcoming obstacles is his strength, it won't be surprising if he manages to carve out a place for himself in the team.
Fla gives Nacional (AM) no chance in the Copinha debut
Flamengo gave Nacional (AM) no chance in their debut in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup and thrashed their opponents 4-0, this Saturday, at the Barão da Serra Negra stadium, in Piracicaba.
Pedro Beda, the Rubro-Negro's center forward, was the match's standout performer, scoring three goals. In the first half, he opened the scoring after just two minutes. Then, Érick Flores scored a stunning goal, worthy of a score, increasing the score in favor of Urubuzinho. In the second half, Flamengo continued to dominate Nacional, scoring twice more, again through Pedro Beda, in the 2th and 19nd minutes.
With this result, Flamengo is the leader of Group N of the Copinha, with an advantage in goal difference, considering that XV de Piracicaba, the home team, beat Ypiranga, from Amapá, 2-0.
Rodrigo kept his word with Fla
Signed at the end of last year to form one of Brazil's best defenses alongside Fábio Luciano, Rodrigo almost ended up at São Paulo. This only ended up happening because in the talks he had with the São Paulo club before signing with Flamengo, they revealed no interest in signing him at the time. After agreeing on a salary agreement with Flamengo, São Paulo decided to invest heavily in bringing him in, even using goalkeeper Rogério Ceni as a mediator.
Regarding forming a duo with Fábio Luciano, the new red-black reinforcement is still apprehensive:
"I'm not going to select myself, because there are many quality players in the squad and Joel will decide on that later. Fábio is a defender who positions himself very well in the box, he's tall and has a lot of skill, but we don't even know how many defenders Joel will use to set up the team," said Rodrigo, who admitted he was very excited to meet the red-black fans for the first time at Maracanã.

The Year of Obina's Redemption
A serious injury to the cruciate ligaments in his left knee, followed by a 120-day suspension imposed by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD) for elbowing Internacional defender Índio, which was eventually reduced in the full court's judgment, marked 2007 as a negative year for striker Obina's career.
After a strong start last season, being a regular starter for coach Ney Franco, he suffered a dramatic injury after scoring a goal in a 1-1 draw with Vasco da Gama in the Guanabara Cup. He returned after five months but failed to regain his former fitness, only coming on as a regular starter. His outlook for the new year is completely different.
"Last year was very difficult for me, and I hope to score a lot of goals now to make up for it. I was doing very well until that injury, but then the suspension made things even more difficult. I hope I can help the team more this year and, who knows, maybe even become the top scorer in some tournament," Obina said.
No fear of Ronaldo and Tardelli
The possibility of the arrival of 'competitors' Ronaldo Fenômeno and Diego Tardelli doesn't scare the player. Although the road ahead is more complicated than it already is, as Souza firmly established himself among the starting lineup last year, Obina believes in his potential and still wants to bring plenty of joy to the red-and-black fans.
"Souza finished the year well, but I have to find my place, be physically fit to get back into the starting lineup. The arrival of other forwards is great, because every player Flamengo is interested in is top-notch. It ends up being an added motivation, because I also want to show my best. The atmosphere here is great, and the newcomers are adapting quickly to the group," said the forward.
In the hands of the executioner

At the start of each season, the same story repeats itself. Players who overdo it during their vacations end up suffering at the hands of their fitness coaches. And Flamengo is no different. After a month without training, the red-and-black squad is suffering at the hands of general Ronaldo Torres. Until the 9th, the routine will always be the same: at 8:30 a.m., everyone is already on the field for physical reconditioning work.
Even playing the role of "executioner," Ronaldo is well-liked by the players, who prefer to train with the ball. But this necessary evil could be forgotten by the end of the year, if all goes according to plan, with Flamengo in Yokohama, celebrating the Interclub World Cup title.
"Physical training can't be seen as suffering; it needs to be done with pleasure. When on vacation, athletes play soccer almost every day, but it's different from the obligation they have when they're at the club. The important thing is to respect this preparation, because after the Carioca debut, we'll almost always have two games a week, and there won't be time to work on the physical aspect as we do now. I need to give them a foundation so they can handle the demanding season ahead," explained Ronaldo Torres.
Rodrigo and Obina are not worried
At the group's return last Thursday, some players appeared visibly overweight. In addition to striker Obina, who usually returns from vacation looking a bit chubby, defender Rodrigo, who was sidelined for three months due to knee arthroscopic surgery, is also not at peak physical condition. For Ronaldo Torres, however, this won't be a problem.
"I like my players to have a maximum body fat percentage of 11%. When they're at 12%, I start to feel it during matches. Rodrigo returned to training at 18%, but he has the advantage of recovering very quickly. Now, I estimate he's at around 14%. Obina is less bad, at around 13%. He performed as he left," the fitness coach assessed.
The defender, who has been working hard during training, is optimistic and believes he will be ready for the team's debut on the 20th against Boavista at Maracanã.
"I'm keeping up well with the group, even after three months without training. But while they were enjoying Christmas and New Year's, I was sweating it out. I think I'll be up to speed by the end of the month," Rodrigo predicted.
The mild climate of the Teresópolis mountains is the coaching staff's bet so that Flamengo can fly in 2008. And the person responsible for this has a name: Ronaldo Torres.
Rômulo: “I will fight to remain a starter in 2008”
Flamengo midfielder Rômulo is very excited to return to the red-and-black jersey in 2008. The young player knows that the competition for a starting spot on Joel Santana's team will be fierce, especially since he'll have to compete with at least five other players in his position. He, however, believes that his participation in 17 matches in this year's Brazilian Championship and the complete confidence in him from the coach could be points in his favor in this battle.
Rômulo promises to put in a lot of effort and dedication to remain in Joel Santana's plans for 2008. But right now, his concern is continuing treatment and recovering quickly from the surgery he underwent on his right knee in October. Rômulo is aware that his return to the field will depend on his dedication and believes that next year will be very special. He's already planning to participate in preseason training with the rest of the group.
"I'll fight to stay in the starting lineup and remain in the coach's plans. 2008 will be a very special year for me and for Flamengo, which will compete in the Libertadores again. As part of my recovery, I'm working on the sand. I'm already feeling very good and no longer have any pain. Now I have to gain muscle mass. This year was very good for me, and it wasn't even better because of this injury. Even so, I can say that my football has been recognized, and I've earned my place," said the midfielder, who interrupted his run of games in the Brasileirão after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The time has come for Flamengo to kick off its fight for its first-ever National Men's Basketball title. And the first hurdle, while not as tough as Brasília or Minas Gerais, won't be the easiest either: Lajeado (RS), one of the biggest unknowns in the championship. The match will be at 13 p.m. in the city of Rio Grande do Sul, with coverage on SporTV.
Little is known about the team from the south of the country. They are the current two-time state champions, but this is their first time competing in the competition. The few members already known to the red-and-blacks are point guards Fernando Reis and Bruninho.
"Their team is basically the same one that played in the Gaucho, with a few reinforcements. I don't know every player, but I've been told that their style of play is similar to ours: they mark aggressively to win games on the counterattack," analyzed coach Paulo Chupeta.
For winger Marcelinho, Flamengo is the favorite for today's match. However, the fact that they're unfamiliar with their opponent could end up complicating things for Flamengo in their debut. "We know some of their players, but it's still very complicated because we don't know how to play against them. Maybe it would be easier if the match were against Minas because we'd know the formula for beating them."
Center Alírio made a point of emphasizing that his team will need to be very careful. He believes Flamengo won't face any easy opponents in the tournament. "I don't know much about Lajeado. But I know there are no weak teams in this National Championship. It's the most important competition, and every team will be in it to win."
For point guard Fred, the group shouldn't worry about knowing little about their rivals. He believes the Rio de Janeiro team only needs to focus on doing their part to emerge victorious. "We have to impose our own rhythm. As the match progresses, we learn how to play against them, but we can't lose sight of our identity."

Rio teams seek fifth National title
Upon entering the court this afternoon, Rio de Janeiro basketball, represented by Flamengo and Iguaçu BC, will seek rehabilitation in national competitions.
Accustomed to great achievements like the Taça Brasil, won by Botafogo in 1967, and the National Championship, in which Vasco won the title twice, in 2000 and 2001. A time when great names from the national team like Helinho, Rogério, Sandro Varejão, Nenê, Oscar, Ratto, and many others showcased their talent on the Rio courts, he was always among the top finishers in major championships. TV Fla goes on air in its initial phase
Rio - Flamengo fans can now get a glimpse of what Flamengo TV will be like broadcast over the internet, via the website www.flatv.com.br.
The Portal, featuring images of training sessions, behind the scenes, training camps, talks, trips, etc., went live this Saturday in its beta (initial) version. Through it, fans will be able to follow, exclusively, everything that happens at their favorite club.
The images have been recorded since the Fla x Flu match that took place in the first round of the 2007 Brazilian Championship, when Rubro-Negro won 1-0 (goal by Maxi).
Users can register, submit suggestions, and explore the club's daily activities. The official launch is scheduled for the end of January.
Rio de Janeiro football shows its face
With a lot of new players, the squads are formed, and all that's left is for the referee to flip a coin to decide who owns the ball and the field. It's time to bet.
Rio - Some faces are new. Or maybe they're not even heads, but crowns. It's with a renewed spirit that Rio's football team rolls up its sleeves and gets to work in the first days of the 2008 season.
When the 19th arrives, and the referee, in the center of the field, tosses the coin to decide who owns the ball and the field, the fate of the four biggest players in the state's football elite will be decided.
Those who invested the most had one eye on the championship and the other firmly on the Libertadores. Flamengo and Fluminense, in a preview of the international competition, began the Fla-Flu match as soon as the trading desk opened.
Fluminense went halfway around the world to acquire striker Washington. And, on a shorter trip, they simply had to cross the Santa Bárbara Tunnel to pry away one of the Brasileirão's best players, Leandro Amaral, and the Argentine Conca from Vasco. They stopped by Botafogo's headquarters and nabbed Dodô.
Besides strengthening their squad, they also weakened two of their state championship opponents. And, since no one thrives on scoring goals alone, Fluminense bolstered their defense with a left-back, Gustavo Nery, formerly of Corinthians.
Even with Washington, Dodô, and Leandro Amaral, scoring goals against Flamengo won't be easy. The Gávea team, in true Joel Santana fashion, preferred to focus on defensive players. Kléberson, already at the club warming up, was joined by Gavilán, formerly of Grêmio, and Jônatas, who had previously played for Gávea, from Espanyol.
Botafogo's only remaining option is to look to Serie B for its main reinforcement: defensive midfielder Túlio Souza, a standout for Coritiba, the Segunda Division champions. This is the team's main bet, which will also have the 'hermanos' Ferrero and Escalada, among other lackluster names.
Without Conca and Leandro Amaral, Vasco struggled with Fluminense off the field, and if they lost, they don't know how they'll win the real battle, the one that really matters, on the field. They brought back Beto, and perhaps to get revenge on their goalscoring ex-Cruzmaltino Leandro Amaral, the club signed a goalkeeper, Tiago. At 24, he stood out in Série B, making good saves for Portuguesa, and more than that: scoring 13 goals, beating even Rogério Ceni, who only scored 10. If Tiago is the man, Romário is the old man. On the 29th, he'll be 42. He'll be both a coach and a player, a coin toss.
Small ones are stronger
In recent state championships, Madureira has been competing on equal terms with the big teams. Guanabara Cup champion and state runner-up in 2006, and Rio Cup runner-up last year, the suburban Tricolor presents its weapons: attacking midfielder Thiago Coimbra, son of Zico, Chrys, son of Aílton (formerly of Flamengo), and forward Creedence.
Coach Carlos Roberto will also have the return of Odvan and Paulo César, the starting defense in 2006. The squad is completed by goalkeeper Giulliano Ciarelli, former Big Brother player, and Mexican midfielder Alonso.
Duque de Caxias, the last team to qualify for the competition, is betting everything on the experienced 38-year-old Viola. "Viola is excited and promises to come and make a difference," says president Luiz Carlos Areias.
Cabofriense celebrates the return of goalkeeper Gatti, the team's standout in the 2007 State Championship, who was at Cruzeiro.
Boavista, from Saquarema, signed 11 players for the competition, with highlights including the trio formed by defender Hélder, formerly of Flamengo, midfielder Roberto Lopes and striker Faioli, formerly of Vasco.

With a three-pointer from Pedro, Flamengo debuts with a rout over Nacional
Piracicaba (SP) - Flamengo got off to a flying start in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup. On Saturday night, in a game marred by heavy rain in Piracicaba, the Rubro-Negro thrashed Nacional-AM 4-0 in Group N. Flamengo opened the scoring with Pedro just two minutes into the first half. They extended their lead in the 38th minute with a beautiful goal from outside the box by Eric. In the second half, Flamengo sealed the victory with Pedro, who scored twice more in the 19th and 22nd minutes, finishing the round among the top scorers in the Copinha.
This Saturday, Group N also saw XV de Piracicaba win 2-0 over Ypiranga-AP. Both goals for the home team came late in the first half, with Marlon scoring in the 38th minute and Cleberson scoring from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute.
Thus, XV de Piracicaba and Falmengo are at the top of the group, but the Rio de Janeiro team has the advantage on goal difference. At the end of three rounds, only the first-place team in each group will be guaranteed a spot in the next round, along with the ten best second-place teams.
The next matches for the Group N teams will take place next Wednesday, all at Barão de Serra Nega Stadium. At 18:30 PM, XV faces Nacional-AM, and at 20:30 PM, it will be Flamengo's turn to face Ypiranga-AP.

Last season wasn't Obina's best. After a promising start to the year at Flamengo, the striker was hampered by successive setbacks, starting with a serious left knee injury that sidelined him for about five months.
While still adapting to the intense routine of training and matches, the red-black darling found himself facing yet another complicated obstacle: he was suspended for 120 days, after elbowing Internacional defender Índio in the face, in a match valid for the 25th round of the Brazilian Championship (3-0 defeat).
Luckily, Flamengo's legal department managed to reduce the punishment to five matches, converting the remainder of the sentence into the payment of basic food baskets.
With the turn of the year, however, Obina hopes to turn his fortunes around. A positive believer, he no longer wants to dwell on the past. The striker's sole focus is to reclaim his starting spot, which Souza initially held, and to create an unforgettable 2008 for his career.
"May it be different. I've already forgotten everything and I imagine a much better season. Without injuries or any other problems. I know I don't have a certain place in the team, but I'm going to dedicate myself to winning back my place," projected the forward, who dreams big.
"Of course, we have to take one step at a time, but little by little, and with a lot of dedication, I'll reach my goals. Who knows, maybe I'll be the top scorer in some competition this year? That's the mindset," he said.
Aware of the competition, which could be even greater as management seeks reinforcements for the new lineup, Obina acknowledges that he'll have to work hard to secure a spot on the first team. However, he's not afraid of the challenge.
"Some quality players may come, as Flamengo wants to work with high-level athletes. But it's up to me to prove that I'm at a high level. And that's what I'll do," he promised.
Two names top the club's list of signings for attack: Ronaldo, from Milan, and Diego Tardelli, from São Paulo.

The portal will provide fans with exclusive footage of the team's training sessions, behind-the-scenes footage, training camps, and travels. Users will need to register to access the content.
The Fla-TV launch party, previously scheduled for the beginning of January, will take place on the 15th.

Flamengo's Campeonato Carioca debut begins on the 20th, and the first match of the Copa Libertadores isn't scheduled until February 13th. Chronological order, however, doesn't matter to Flamengo's players. Subconsciously, they can't get the South American tournament out of their minds.
Obina, for example, makes a point of remembering that he scored two goals in just three games last season. He then suffered a serious injury and missed the elimination match against Defensor-URU.
- This year the goal is the title - he declares.
Defender Rodrigo has a burning desire for the competition. All because, in 2004, he was on the São Paulo team that lost to Once Caldas in Colombia and was eliminated in the semifinals.

The first opponent in the Libertadores will be Coronel Bolognesi of Peru. On Monday, Flamengo's football coordinator, Sérgio Helt, will travel to Tacna to tour the Peruvian city's facilities. Fans who visit the website will have access to behind-the-scenes footage of the team, including training sessions, pre-match interviews, and travel. The video archive began with the 1-0 victory over Fluminense in the last Brazilian Championship.
As this is not yet the final version, Flamengo asks fans to send criticisms and suggestions.
Fla TV is the board's big bet for 2008. The vice-president of football at Rubro-Negro, Kléber Leite, estimates a monthly revenue of around R$ 5 million.

Flamengo, the current three-time Rio de Janeiro champion in the category, got off to a blistering start in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup. With a hat trick from striker Pedro Beda, the Red-Black team thrashed Nacional, from Amazonas, 4-0 in the first round of Group N, which is based in Piracicaba. Erick Flores completed the scoring.
Flamengo is led by Rogério Lourenço, a former defender and youth coach. The youth team's coach, Adílio, and some "stars," such as forward Kayke and midfielder Vinícius Colombiano, are on vacation and will only return for the State Championship.
With the result, the Rio de Janeiro team took the lead in the group, since in the preliminary round, XV de Piracicaba beat Ypiranga, from Amapá, by just 2-0. Next Wednesday, XV and Nacional face each other at 18:30 pm, and Flamengo and Ypiranga play in sequence.

The African country has about 9 million inhabitants, and the local team has little football tradition. To give the players more playing time, the red-and-black coaching staff is considering another training match against a Nicaraguan team.
Flamengo has been in Teresópolis since Friday and will remain in the mountainous city until the 15th. For now, the squad has only been working on physical training. Ball activities are expected to begin next Thursday. The State Championship debut will be on the 20th, against Boavista, at Maracanã.

Three-time Rio de Janeiro champion Flamengo begins dreaming this Sunday of its first Brazilian basketball title. And to make this dream a reality, it's pinning its hopes on Marcelinho Machado. The team debuts in the Men's National Championship this Sunday at 13 p.m. (Brasília time) against Lajeado, which will be making its first appearance in the competition. The match will be broadcast live on SporTV.
Flamengo is participating in the competition for the thirteenth time. The Rio de Janeiro club's best finishes were runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2004. Marcelinho won the Brazilian title with Rio de Janeiro in 2005.
"Flamengo has assembled a very competitive team for this season, aiming to win the title. We have to use the strength of the red-and-black jersey to our advantage, always playing with great grit and determination," says Marcelinho, Flamengo's winger/point guard.
The Rio Grande do Sul team makes its debut in the National Championship and is counting on the support of the Lajeado fans to be the sixth player on the court. Also making its debut in the competition, coach Clairton Wachhloz, known as Xis, is banking on a strong defense to surprise his opponents.
"It's our first National Championship, and we want to start off on the right foot, within our current circumstances. The goal is to qualify for the playoffs, and to do so, we've strengthened the team," says the coach.

In the fans' opinion, Obina is still better than Eto'o. But in Joel Santana's lineup, the striker still doesn't have a place in Flamengo's starting lineup at the start of 2008. He knows this and doesn't dispute it.
The Bahia native avoids any controversy and praises Souza. Even his preseason training uniform is number 18.
"I already knew I'd start as a reserve. Souza finished the year very well. Little by little, I can return to the starting lineup," he declares.
Obina had an exciting start to 2007. He scored goals and confirmed his status as the fans' favorite. But a knee injury in February ushered in months of anguish. When he returned, still out of shape, he assaulted Internacional's Índio and was suspended for over 30 days.

Flamengo's leading voice in these first days of preseason is fitness coach Ronaldo Torres. But that doesn't mean Joel Santana abandons the players during their grueling workouts at Granja Comary in Teresópolis.
Side by side with the athletes, "Daddy" never misses an opportunity to encourage them, challenge them, and, most importantly, mock them. All in good humor, of course.
With sunglasses on, he won't even risk a quick jog. But woe betide anyone who stops moving during physical training. Just ask defender Nilton.

At this stage of the work, not even the goalkeepers are spared the rush. And, in Joel's opinion, Bruno performed well.

Flamengo debuted in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup with a thrashing. The team led by Rogério Lourenço defeated Nacional-AM 4-0, with three goals from Pedro Beda and one from Erick Flores.
Flamengo started strong and opened the scoring just two minutes into the game with Pedro Beda. It looked like they were going to rout the ball, but inexplicably, the team stopped playing and gave Nacional space, which gave goalkeeper Marcelo trouble on two occasions.
Rubro-Negro extended their lead in the 36th minute with Erick Flores, who scored a stunning goal. The midfielder beat one defender, got past another with a beautiful backheel, and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box.
With the advantage on the scoreboard, Flamengo returned to the second half feeling comfortable. Nacional took advantage and launched an attack, but was hampered by their players' lack of skill.
When Flamengo woke up, they thrashed. In the 19th minute, Pedro Beda took a chance from outside the box and scored a beautiful goal. Three minutes later, the striker scored his third goal of the game, taking advantage of a defensive rebound.
The team started with: Marcelo, Michel Macedo, Lucas Galdino, Fabrício and Jobson; Lenon, Wellington, Erick Flores and Renan Silva; Pedro Beda and Paulo Sérgio.
Jônatas arrives at Flamengo with a thirst for titles
The player spoke to LANCE! and said he only thinks about the Libertadores.

Jônatas hasn't been officially introduced yet, but LANCE! managed to speak with him. The defensive midfielder, who left Flamengo shortly after lifting the 2006 Copa do Brasil trophy, is back with a fixed goal in mind: to triumph in this year's Copa Libertadores.
"My goal is to be champion again here. I had a dream of playing and winning a Libertadores. I'm happy to do that for Flamengo. But to do that, he'll have to prove on the field why he was one of this year's key signings."
Jônatas, who is 25 years old, will have to fight for a spot in midfield. Many Flamengo fans believe he should be a starter. But the defensive midfielder knows it will be a tough fight. The midfielder has 12 options.
"The guys who were here last year did well. I have to come in with the same attitude, because there's going to be a fight," he joked.
At Espanyol, he played as a sort of link man, but he's still unsure of which position he'll be deployed in. At Gávea, he's played in all four midfield positions.
With Joel, he became the first midfielder, playing between the defenders, almost like a sweeper.
"The system in Spain was very different from ours, and I played more up front. But I don't have a preference. I'll train to play. I just don't know which position. But Joel can answer that question," said the midfielder, an idol of the red-and-black fans, who hope, more than anything, that the player's dream of conquering America becomes a reality this season.

Flamengo kicked off preseason training this week, and fans still don't know how Joel Santana will line up the team. But one thing is certain: the coach will have to rack his brains to assemble his midfield.
The group has 12 players who can be used in this position, giving Joel plenty of options. With this in mind, LANCE! asked experts to choose the ideal midfield for various situations: games at the Maracanã, at altitude, in traps, classics, and for putting on a show. With such a wide variety of players, five different formations were considered.
Only two teams had all four players repeat. All are skilled and good passers, but not particularly strong in marking: Jônatas, Kleberson, Ibson, and Renato Augusto. Their defensive deficiencies don't prevent the coach from using them.
Even the players gave their opinions. But, of course, without saying who should start. Cristian, for example, commented that Flamengo should play anywhere just as well as when they're playing at Maracanã:
"We must play with determination and determination. Even so, we must focus on marking. We need to prioritize possession, as the game is more stressful, and we have quality players to handle it."
Kleberson, however, preferred not to venture into any specifics regarding his formation or tactics. He has a strong chance of starting and only commented on the possibility of playing at altitude.
"I'm not going to take any chances on tactics. The group isn't closed. At altitude, all Brazilians suffer, and we must work to solve these problems," he said.
While Joel hasn't held his first training session and the lineup hasn't been announced, the players are leaving with the idea that no one is guaranteed a spot. Cristian believes everyone has what it takes and reminds everyone that those who arrive will have to fight:

Obina didn't finish 2007 as expected. The Red-and-Black fans' darling faced an injury and a suspension last year that complicated the striker's life. This secured Souza's place in the starting lineup. However, the Black Angel isn't discouraged and says he'll fight for his spot.
"Souza finished the year playing well, but I'll do my best to earn my place, always respecting my teammates. To be a starter, you have to dedicate yourself in training and take advantage of opportunities during games," commented Obina, adding:
"This year I'm thinking about goals. Last year I didn't score many. Until my injury, I was doing well. Then the suspension came, and it ended up not being one of my best years. Now it's time to work hard to put Flamengo at the top and, who knows, become the top scorer."
Obina may be joined by a player who even won a World Cup with the national team: Ronaldo, a dream of Flamengo's board. And the striker welcomes the arrival of the "Phenomenon."
"It's important for the team to have good players. If he comes, he'll be great," he concluded.
