The transition that began yesterday in Gávea will continue today at 21:50 p.m., when Flamengo faces Mexico's América at Maracanã. In a match where a spot in the Libertadores quarterfinals will only be lost if they lose by three goals—or by two goals, with a score greater than 5-3—it's no exaggeration to say that Flamengo's players will be playing for Caio Júnior to see. From a viewing booth, he will begin to put into practice what he heard yesterday from Joel Santana.
In his presentation, the new coach used a speech that combined humility and a winning spirit.
"First of all, I'll listen to Joel and continue what he's done. Joel has his history at the club. Now, I'll have to build mine," Caio stated, only to be asked if he didn't consider it a risk to replace a coach with such good results. "There is a risk, yes: the big risk of becoming world champion."
Caio Júnior also proved to be witty. Alongside Joel, he maintained his predecessor's signature relaxed tone, even when discussing his eyewear collection.
"I hope they give me a red-and-black one. I liked this one from Joel, which comes in a little box. He could give it to me as a gift," he joked.
"I've already given the gift. This well-prepared team, this fan base, and the energy of this club. The city is happy, and so are the fans. Now it's a party, a celebration," Joel said.
Soon, Caio Júnior was forced to refer to Joel's clipboard.
"I'll take a look at her," he promised, before talking about replacing a coach considered a "father figure." "Maybe I'm an uncle figure."
Celebrations worry Joel
Today, at Maracanã, Caio will begin to fulfill a wish: to have the Flamengo fans by his side.
- Flamengo reminds me of Maracanã, fans, Zico - he said.
After the interview, he met with Joel. He heard he'd be taking over a friendly group. Later, on the field, his predecessor introduced Caio to the players, a rare occurrence. Before watching Joel's training session, Caio got a glimpse of the atmosphere between the coach and the squad. Joel, who is now leaving, faced the players' Polish Runner, a game he himself created to "punish" minor misbehavior. In this case, Joel was "punished" by leaving the club. Some suggested giving Caio the first run, but Joel protected him.
Before today's game, Joel will receive a plaque from Flamengo. He will enter the field surrounded by flags and be led to the center of the field, where he will thank the fans. The club is trying to prepare a video with memorable images of the coach to show on the Maracanã screens.
The party, although exciting, worries Joel for today's game.
"I'm worried. We're facing a team that's not bad, and there's a lot of talk about partying and celebrating. We have to get back to focusing on the game. The Libertadores is only decided after 180 minutes," warned Joel, worried about not ending his time at Flamengo with a disaster. "I'm not thinking about saying goodbye. It's like it's my first day."
"There's no risk of losing focus. The team will be dedicated. We have a good lead, but the spot isn't ours yet," said defender Fábio Luciano. "I told Caio to stay calm. The group has a good atmosphere. Now, we have to part ways with Joel. We have a new manager."
The captain's words showed the other side of today's game:
- A healthy fight for positions will resume. The new coach's options may not be the same.
Joel is expected to keep the team from the State finals, which would serve as a starting point for Caio Júnior, who will watch the game from a viewing booth. Souza is in doubt, with a stiff neck.
Nike approached Flamengo and made its second contract renewal offer yesterday, doubling the current amount and bringing it to nearly R$15 million annually for a five-year contract. According to Flamengo president Márcio Braga, the club will consider the offer. Flamengo is being sought after by other brands. Olympikus offered R$20 million annually. As for Souza, who wore his uniform inside out during the state title celebration, Braga ordered the football department to punish him. Souza is expected to be fined.
Yesterday, Márcio Braga expressed his solidarity with Ronaldo.
"Flamengo has its doors open to him, and we support his physical and psychological recovery. He is an idol of Brazil and the red-and-black nation," he said.

Humor and nostalgia on Joel's last day in Gávea
PAPAI JOEL: Cover of GLOBO's Sports Section, after the 1-0 victory over Paraná, which saved Flamengo from relegation in 2005
Yesterday, Gávea celebrated its last day under the banner of "Daddy Joel." The coach provided a summary of his nine-month stint at the club. At the press conference, alongside Caio Júnior, he relaxed the atmosphere when asked the first question:
- Get me out of this. It's his turn now. But that's okay. I'll pass everything on to Caio. I'll even talk about the annoying southern lapwing that stays on the field.
After meeting with Caio, Joel led his final training session, a kickabout. Beforehand, he'd passed through the players' Polish corridor. While the team practiced, he wandered alone around the field, his gaze distant. Then, he repeated his ritual every day before a game: he went to one of the goals and kicked each post three times. He swears it's not superstition.
"I went to look at the southern lapwing," he said, quickly admitting to a certain nostalgia. "It seems like it was just yesterday that I arrived. Things were so bad that even the southern lapwing didn't show up. Today it's all grown up."
Then, in a slip of the tongue, he revealed that he was leaving for South Africa but leaving his heart in Gávea.
"Against Santos, there may not be fans at Maracanã. But we'll be out there cheering," he said, referring to the closed-doors game.
Joel's day ended with a long autograph session. A common routine since he became an idol. "Stay, my angel," a fan pleaded. Disconcerted, he simply smiled.
Fernando Calazans
Fábio Luciano said the right thing at the Federation's awards ceremony for the championship's best players. They likely played him as a left-back—which he isn't—to avoid a direct confrontation with Thiago Silva on the right, and thus be able to field both players in the national team.
In fact, a top-notch defensive duo, one of the best, if not the best, that could be fielded in our football today: Thiago Silva and Fábio Luciano.
But that doesn't mean a defense formed by Thiago Silva and Ronaldo Angelim would be second-rate in the Rio championship team, as Fábio Luciano himself chivalrously suggested.
Ronaldo Angelim, along with his teammate and defender Fábio Luciano, formed the defense that was one of the highlights of Flamengo's championship campaign.
Discreet and humble, without marketing or personal promotion, Ronaldo Angelim could well be in that national team, where he would certainly play as well alongside Thiago Silva as he did for Flamengo, alongside Fábio Luciano.
Good People
Champion again
Of the four CDs recording fans' chants on-site at the Maracanã stadium, released last month by Som Livre, Flamengo's represents 70% of sales. Botafogo, sadly, is in second place. Fluminense is in last place.

'Big Uncle' Caio Junior is presented in Gávea
Officially introduced this Tuesday at the Rodrigo Steinberg Auditorium in Gávea, coach Caio Júnior is already beginning to feel the weight of leading Flamengo starting next Sunday at the Maracanã against Santos in the first round of the Brazilian Championship. The good-natured coach, upon learning of the current Flamengo coach's nickname "Daddy" Joel, decided to call himself "Uncle" Caio Junior.
The coach answered several questions upon his arrival and appeared calm and prepared for the biggest challenge of his career.
Check out the most important excerpts from the press conference below:
Transition\ The first thing is to listen to Joel. I have to have the humility to recognize that I need to continue the work. I managed the championship team last year with Joel. It was unforgettable. I'll talk to Joel and on Wednesday I'll watch the game from above, without participating in the pre-match talk.\
Squad\ Individual knowledge of the players. This is ideal and what I'm really concerned about right now. At the very least, understanding their personality traits, in addition to their technical skills. I consider the information Joel has gained over these past ten months to be crucial.\
Replacing Daddy Joel\ Maybe my style is that of an old man. Joel has his profile, the work is done, and I need to build my own. My first challenge is to win over the players. The greatest advertisement for a coach is the publicity from the players. I need time. This is a very important moment. I didn't hesitate for a moment. I never imagined I would be playing in the Libertadores with Flamengo. Things happen in life that we don't understand, but later on, the answer comes.\
Risks\ It's rare in football for what happened now to happen. Almost rare. While there's a risk in taking over a team in good form, I see a very high risk of becoming world champion and, in the first instance, winning the Copa Libertadores.\
I work at Palmeiras. Balance is essential. Neither euphoria nor depression. I had an experience last year at Palmeiras where I was under a lot of pressure. I managed to handle it well. But here, the fans are bigger, the pressure is much greater.
Debut in an empty stadium\ It feels like training. It's going to be strange, I'd like to debut with the fans' support.\
Flamengo\ Flamengo represents a Brazilian national team. The impact is the same, the scale is the same. There are fans everywhere. I watched a few games this year, like the one against Cienciano, and saw Joel's bold attitude.\
Fans' distrust\ I think it's normal because I'm young (43) and have been coaching for four years. I've had important moments, like taking Paraná to the Libertadores and my time at Palmeiras. Unfortunately, in the final stretch, Goiás didn't fare well, and that leaves a lasting impression. But we had the best attack in Brazil, with 64 goals in 24 games.\
Red and black glasses and the clipboard. I don't have them yet, but I'm waiting. All the ones I have are gifts. I want to take a look at the clipboard.

At the press conference, Caio Júnior appeared humble and relaxed.
Amidst a festive atmosphere, Caio Júnior arrived in Gávea yesterday, where he was introduced to the press and fans by Vice President of Football Kleber Leite in the Rogério Steinberg Auditorium. Flamengo's new coach exuded warmth and humility. At just 43 years old and four years as coach, he promised to continue Joel Santana's excellent work.
"My biggest concern right now is getting to know the players. First, I have to listen to Joel Santana and have the humility to continue the successful work that has been done here," said Caio, who claimed to be the group's new uncle.
"Our styles are different and there's no comparison. Joel is already established, and I'm just starting out. My challenge, at the moment, is to understand the players' personalities. I'm not a dad, I'm more of an uncle. My work philosophy is to organize the team in a way that doesn't sacrifice the players' characteristics," warned the playful Caio Júnior.
Regarding his hiring, he made it clear that for him, coaching Flamengo is very similar to managing the Brazilian National Team and that is why he agreed to come work in Rio.
"Flamengo is like the Brazilian national team, meaning it has fans everywhere. When I think of this club, I immediately think of Maracanã, Zico, Andrade, and Júnior. That '81 team was one of the best I've ever seen play. When Kleber Leite approached me, I had to accept this project," the coach confessed.
Results
Regarding his recent stint at Goiás, Caio Júnior agreed that he didn't have a great campaign, but he has already promised better results at Flamengo.
"Many are saying that I didn't do well at Goiás, but things were different there. I took over a very young team that was still developing. Even so, we had the best attack in Brazil," added the coach, who was introduced to the Flamengo players after the press conference.
Souza injures shoulder, but should face América-MEX

Souza shouldn't be a problem for Wednesday's match
Tuesday's training session at Gávea featured the introduction of Flamengo's new coach, Caio Junior. But on the field, activity suffered a setback. Striker Souza fell awkwardly during the training session and injured his right shoulder.
Despite the problem, the number 9 is not expected to be absent from the team for this Wednesday's match against América-MEX, at Maracanã, in the round of XNUMX of the Copa Libertadores.
The good news was the full recovery of Renato Augusto, who overcame the injury to his right calf and will be available to coach Joel Santana on the bench.
Jaílton and Toró feel vindicated
Flamengo's 30th Rio de Janeiro title, won after a solid 3-1 victory over Botafogo, seems to have had a special flavor for two players. Criticized, humiliated, and often even ridiculed by the media and much of the fanbase, Jaílton and Toró continue to lift trophies for Flamengo.
The former took over as a starter after Rômulo's injury last year, and last Sunday he had a great performance, being one of the main reasons for the defense's strong performance. The player, who was also a starter last year under Ney Franco, said that winning the championship twice is proof of his potential for everyone.
"I don't like to talk. I prefer to show it on the field. They talked a lot about me, criticized me a lot, booed me, and wrote bad things about me. My answer is this two-time championship that I won on the field. I started in both victories and played well," Jaílton said.
Toró prefers to avoid further controversy surrounding his name. He's been involved in several disputes lately, and as a result, he says, he's been persecuted by the referees. After last Sunday's title, the player said the victory is simply a reason to be happy.
"I only like to prove myself to my family. They're the ones who matter to me. I'm happy, and I want to share that happiness with them. I'm having a good time, and that's good for me and the team," says Toró, taking great care with what he says.
Obina enjoys her father Manuel and says goodbye to Joel
A fan favorite, Obina is enjoying a blessed moment. Scorer of three decisive goals in the Championship finals, the top scorer is known for being an emotional person who enjoys receiving affection from fans and the people he works with. Therefore, there's nothing better than spending the day after his great achievement with his father, Manuel.
Happy to hear the fans shouting that Obina is better than Eto'o again, he finds himself in a special moment, made even better by his father's presence.
"I really enjoyed listening to that song again. I'm down to earth, but it's good to have my work recognized by the fans who made me their favorite," said Obina, who emphasized the importance of his father. "He's always giving me tips and advice," he recalled.
Despite this, Obina is sad to be saying goodbye to another father, Joel, who will lead Flamengo for the last time tomorrow. Even so, he welcomes the new manager, Caio Júnior.
"We have a very close-knit group that will help and welcome you as we did with Joel," he said. (BP)
Midfielder Cristian praises Caio Júnior
Starting next Wednesday, Flamengo will have a new coach, and some players are already familiar with the newly appointed manager's work. Midfielder Cristian, although he didn't see him up close, was able to observe from afar, as his main rival, Caio Júnior's work when the coach was in charge of Paraná Clube. Cristian was playing for Atlético-PR at the time.
"When I was at Atlético-PR, I worked with him. He's a great coach, he has character, he has the Joel style, and that's great. It's good to know that he's always ready to help a player. One father figure leaves and another comes in. We're ready to help him as much as possible," said midfielder Cristian.
Caio Júnior starts training the team next Thursday.
Flamengo loses to Rio Claro
The red-and-black team plays well, but can't resist the São Paulo team in the last quarter of the match

Point guard Duda led Flamengo with his characteristic runs and good shots
Rio Claro, SP — Without three important players, Flamengo was unable to resist Rio Claro yesterday, in the interior of São Paulo, and was defeated by 88 to 73. The result, however, does not affect the red-black campaign, which is already guaranteed the first position in the qualifying phase and will face Cetaf, from Espírito Santo, in the quarterfinals of the National Men's Basketball Championship.
In the first quarter, with the support of their home crowd, Rio Claro prevailed, closing with a 24-20 lead. But from then on, point guard Hélio, with a strong performance and 20 points in that period, led the red-and-black comeback. They powerfully turned the game around to 47-39 after the first half. For São Paulo, the experienced Vanderlei shone with 16 points.
In the third quarter, with more options on the bench, Rio Claro closed the gap and took advantage of Flamengo's fatigue, which was again without Marcelinho, Amiel, and Fred. The Rio team took a three-point lead: 64-61.
In the heated final quarter, Rio Claro came out for all or nothing. Dominating the rebounds, the São Paulo team managed to turn the score around and win comfortably, 88-73, also confirming their passage to the quarterfinals.
Flamengo returns to play tomorrow against Universo/Brasília at the Hélio Maurício gymnasium in Gávea. The rivalry between the teams is intense, as Universo represented Vasco in the last State Championship.

The beautiful Maracanã
João Areosa areosa@jsports.com.br
The flags are collected.
Some fans still walk around the streets here and there wearing their red and black shirts, showing joy and pride in the culmination of a packed, crowded, hot, colorful, and stuffy Sunday at Maracanã.
That stadium was fantastic on a day of classics, like the Botafogo vs. Flamengo match, which stirred all sorts of emotions and commotion. What a show the fans put on. Botafogo's fans dominated the first half. Flamengo's fans took over in the second half. And what a final!
Today, on this sunny Rio Tuesday with clear skies, I realize as I write that I made a mistake, as the saying goes, by sitting in front of the TV instead of going to the stadium. I missed out on history and I'll never forgive myself. I received emails from old friends, like Bud in Leme, telling me how few times he'd seen the Maracanã so spectacular. "Beautiful," was the expression he used. And beautiful it was.
Television, with its hundreds of cameras and technical resources, will never come close to a Maracanã like the one on Sunday. This old stadium has a life of its own. It cries and laughs as if it were one of us. It trembles, it shivers. It's human.
I have the impression that it was he, the beloved stadium, who was responsible for the result of the game, when he whispered in Joel's ear: "Get this team playing forward. No defensive midfielders, put in Obina and Tardelli and I guarantee the end of the story."
Oh, I never told you? Are you sure, reader? Well, pay attention to these words: "Maracanã is Flamengo" - I say and add: "sick Flamengo."
Even the blind saw the stadium erupt when Joel's team changed the course of history, led by the chubby, Carajá-fed Bahian Obina, anointed by all the saints and orishas who inhabit Salvador and its surroundings. Saravá!
And he was even more excited by Juan's deadly dribbles down the left flank. Dribbles like those of people who suggest the National Team now. Today there's more Maracanã. There's Joel's goodbye. All that remains are the memories of a beautiful Sunday that are slowly settling in the columnist's heart.
THE DAY
Lots of pats on Joel's goodbye
Despite the festive atmosphere, the coach wants to be serious in today's match against América de México
Janir Junior
Rio - The red-and-black family bids farewell today, against América of Mexico, at 21:50 pm, at the Maracanã, to 'Daddy' Joel, who will lead the South African national team. In the tribute game to the coach who led the team out of the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship last year, secured qualification for the Libertadores and won its second state championship, the red-and-black team can even lose 2-0 and still qualify for the quarterfinals. The team from Gávea won the first leg 4-2.
"It's a party, a celebration," joked Joel, who will receive tributes from the board and fans. Yesterday, on his last day of training with Flamengo, there was plenty of joking and good humor, despite the seriousness of the game: "I'm worried about this party; we have to stay focused on the Libertadores. We need to be cautious." As of yesterday, 18.464 tickets had been sold.
Before stepping back, Joel received a slap on the back. Yesterday, after introducing Caio Júnior to the squad, the "dad" was caught by his "sons." Ten months ago at Gávea, Joel fell victim to the "Polish Runner" for the first time. "He's always escaped, but this time there was no way. It was a day to relax, to prove that the atmosphere is very good. It's a happy day for Flamengo, as Joel leaves here to fulfill a beautiful dream," said team captain Fábio Luciano.
As a gift, the squad wants to give Joel not only qualification, but also a victory. Flamengo hasn't advanced to the Libertadores quarterfinals since 1993. "He deserves to say goodbye with a victory. Furthermore, the transition to Caio has to be a winning team," Fábio added.
Joel recalled that he won 70% of the points he played for in 10 months at the club. "Life has to go on," added the 'daddy,' who admits it will be hard to hold back the tears. At 'Daddy Joel's' game, the red-and-blacks feel orphaned, but grateful for the good treatment.
Nike: a thousand disagreements
Janir Junior
Rio - Flamengo's relationship with Nike is at its worst and is likely to come to an end, but the board of directors is at odds over whether to terminate the contract with the sports equipment supplier. Yesterday morning, lawyer Michel Assef declared the partnership over. But that evening, after a meeting with company representatives, president Márcio Braga said that, despite the problems, the club had received the multinational's third offer, reportedly offering R$18 million, double the current value.
Vulcabrás is offering amounts reaching R$20 million, and Adidas is offering R$18 million. Olimpykus is also reportedly interested.
"The relationship isn't good at all. Flamengo wants to amicably terminate the contract, but Nike doesn't want to let go of the club. The contract remains in effect, and we'll analyze this new offer, which was wonderful, double the current price," said the executive, who highlighted the unease in the negotiation.
Yesterday morning, before the meeting, Michel Assef, the club's lawyer, was blunt. "Flamengo has already terminated its contract with Nike. Now, we have to await the legal proceedings. The company violated our principles, our sporting principles. What Nike did was belittle Flamengo's opponents. We no longer want to do business with them. There is no dialogue," Michel said in an interview with globoesporte.com.
The lawyer refers to the fact that Nike put on sale, on the eve of the State Championship decision against Botafogo, a commemorative shirt for the title.
Assef said the club could play in today's game without the company logo, a decision denied by officials. Márcio Braga did not set a date for resolving the dispute with Nike.
Interview with Caio Júnior: 'Uncle' wants to honor the mantle
Rio - Caio Júnior, 43, was introduced yesterday and had a brief interaction with the players. Extremely friendly, the coach described himself as "old man," rather than "dad" Joel, and said he's here to make history and wants to win the Libertadores and World Cup titles. While watching training in a dress shirt, Caio was told by fans that he should wear the Flamengo jersey. He promised to wear it starting tomorrow, when he takes over the team. And he promised to honor the "sacred mantle," being bold when necessary.
CAIO 'UNCLE'\ "If Joel is the dad, maybe I'm the uncle. But, even though I'm continuing his work, there's no comparison. I'm going to build my story at the club. Here, everything takes on a bigger dimension."\
RISK OF BEING CHAMPION\ “It’s difficult to admit at a good time like this, but I have a very big risk of being champion of the Libertadores and the World Cup.”\
TIME\ "I'll look at Joel's clipboard (laughs). I'll watch the game against América and make observations. I'll seek balance, without too much euphoria or depression. We'll use the best players, understanding their technical skills and personalities. My biggest advertisement will be the promotion of the squad."\
DEBUT WITHOUT FANS\ "I've experienced this in a game. It was strange, it felt like a training session, where only the coaches' voices could be heard." (Sunday, against Santos, the club will play behind closed doors)\
RECENT DEFEATS\ “Goiás lost 4-0 to Corinthians and 3-0 to Itumbiara, but before that they had the most positive attack in Brazil, with 64 goals in 24 games. I'm a young coach and I'll have to prove my worth with results.”\
AUDACIOUS\ “I will be audacious. I know that when audacity doesn't work, some classify it as irresponsibility. Flamengo has the same representation as the National Team.”\
RED AND BLACK GLASSES\ “The glasses I have were given to me as a gift. If anyone wants to give me a black and red pair, that would be great.” (Kléber Leite jokes and says that he shouldn’t expect anything from Joel, who has a reputation for being a tightwad. Joel responds: “My gift is this team”).\
Closed gate will serve as a lesson
Rio - Besides the financial loss to the club, the fact that Flamengo's Brasileirão debut is on Sunday against Santos at 18:10 PM, behind closed doors, could serve as a lesson to fans. This is what Fábio Luciano believes. The punishment was imposed because, last year, a can was thrown onto the pitch when the team faced Grêmio.
"It's an unfortunate situation, but it should serve as a lesson so it doesn't happen again. The support of our fans would be very important; an empty stadium will certainly hinder us," said Fábio Luciano.
Title and trailer
Fábio expressed confidence in the possibility of winning the Brazilian title. "It will be a tough championship, but we will fight for the title. We will show that we are a fighting team, with a chance of being champion," the player emphasized.
The motorcade for the state title was confirmed for Saturday, at 11 am, leaving from Gávea and heading along the coast to Leme.
Caio Júnior is welcomed with open arms
Rio - Caio Júnior was introduced to the squad and had a quick chat with the group. Afterwards, he watched the game from the sidelines and gradually introduced himself to the players individually. The new coach was warmly welcomed by everyone at Gávea.
"Caio will implement a new philosophy, and the club will remain strong. He's shown himself to be a calm, honest person with a championship mindset. Since he may want to have other options on the team, we'll have a healthy fight for positions," commented defender Fábio Luciano.
Caio Júnior will watch today's game from one of the Maracanã stadium's booths. Tomorrow's practice, originally scheduled for the afternoon, has been moved up to 10 a.m. During yesterday's practice, Souza left the field with neck pain. If he's unfit, Obina is expected to start. Renato Augusto still has pain in his right knee and is out.

In a festive mood, Flamengo decides its place in the Libertadores
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Still in the festive mood after winning the Campeonato Carioca last Sunday, Flamengo takes the field to seal its place in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. This Wednesday, at 21:50 p.m. (Brasília time), at the Maracanã, the Rio de Janeiro team hosts América-MEX in the second leg. Having won 4-2 in Mexico, Flamengo has a large advantage and will qualify despite a 2-0 loss. If Flamengo secures its place, it will face Santos or Cúcuta-COL in the next round.\ Although Caio Júnior has already been confirmed as Flamengo's coach for the remainder of the season, Joel Santana will still be on the bench this Wednesday. The coach is not hiding his excitement about his farewell and even gave a speech expressing his intention to return to the club in the future. He will manage South Africa in 2010.\
"I'm just popping over there, but we'll see each other again in the future. I'm very grateful for everything Flamengo and this fan base have done for me. Together, we've achieved so many positive things during this period," commented Joel.
Before leaving Flamengo, Joel Santana spoke with his replacement and made a point of praising the Flamengo squad. "There's a calm group here, a true family. There's no room for bad blood or whispering," the coach stated.
Despite the festive atmosphere surrounding the Carioca win and Joel Santana's farewell tone, the red-and-black players are fully prepared to achieve another positive result against América-MEX.
"We were very happy with the Rio title, but we know that at Flamengo we can never get complacent. We had a good lead in Mexico, but we're looking for another win to confirm our qualification," said right-back Leonardo Moura, one of the standout performers in the Flamengo's victory in the first leg.
Joel Santana hasn't confirmed his starting lineup for Wednesday, but that's likely to happen in the locker room. The Flamengo coach may rest any players complaining of muscle fatigue.
Meanwhile, América-MEX arrives in Brazil still hoping to maintain its hopes of progressing in the Libertadores, despite the negative result at home. "The score is quite difficult for us, but it's not definitive. We have to go out there and play and look for goals. They have quality players and will be playing at home, which makes things difficult, but we can't give up," said goalkeeper Ochoa.
To ease the crisis a little, América beat Monterrey at the weekend in the Mexican Championship and broke a streak of 13 games without victories.
Caio Júnior arrives at Fla rejecting comparison with Joel\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Alongside Joel Santana, whom he is replacing, Caio Júnior was introduced as Flamengo's new coach on Tuesday afternoon. Exuding good humor, the new manager joked about his predecessor having a reputation as the "father figure" within the squad. "I think I have the 'uncle' style. Joel did a great job here at Flamengo, and now I have to build on my own. Joel has his own profile, and I have mine; I don't like to make comparisons. He made his own history, and I have to make mine. My biggest challenge is to win over this group of players, and I will do so with the utmost honesty. The most important thing is that when Kléber Leite called me, I didn't hesitate for a moment, because I know this is an important moment for me," the coach stated.
Caio Júnior's debut will be on Sunday, when Flamengo's Brazilian Championship opener against Santos at the Maracanã. Before that, on Wednesday, Joel will bow out in the Copa Libertadores match against América-MEX.
"I'll watch Wednesday's game from up there and won't be participating in the pre-match talk. But I consider what Joel has to share with me to be crucial," Caio commented.
Flamengo takes second place in the Carioca championship. Joel receives a gift.
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Two-time Carioca champion Flamengo took a back seat at the tournament's awards ceremony, held Monday night in Barra da Tijuca. Flamengo won four of the 18 trophies up for grabs, three fewer than Botafogo, the night's champion. Coach Joel Santana, however, showed off his traditional lucky streak and received a gift before leaving Rio de Janeiro. The Glorioso de General Severiano received the night's top awards: midfielder Lucio Flavio was named Carioca's star player, while forward Wellington Paulista received the top scorer trophy and Cuca was named best coach. Flamengo's goalkeeper Bruno, defender Fábio Luciano, left-back Juan, and midfielder Ibson also received awards.
But the big surprise at the awards ceremony was Joel Natalino Santana. Leaving to replace Carlos Alberto Parreira on the South African national team, the coach will make a stopover before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Although he wasn't named the best coach in the Carioca Championship, Joel won a ticket to the United States, raffled among those in attendance.
The State team was made up of: Bruno (Flamengo), Wágner Diniz (Vasco), Thiago Silva (Fluminense), Fábio Luciano (Flamengo) and Juan (Flamengo); Túlio (Botafogo), Ibson (Flamengo), Thiago Neves (Fluminense) and Lucio Flavio (Botafogo); Wellington Paulista (Botafogo) and Washington (Fluminense).
Businessman admits that Ibson should return to Porto\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Rio de Janeiro champion Flamengo also has the potential to win the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Libertadores this year. But to do so, one of the team's concerns is not losing the core squad that won the state championship. Midfielder Ibson is one of those who could leave mid-year, as he is on loan from Porto until the end of next month. On Tuesday, agent Eduardo Uram tried to remain cautious, but hinted that Ibson is likely to return to the Portuguese club.
"It's premature. We won't discuss this matter until the end of his loan to Flamengo from Porto, which is on June 30th. The trend is for him to return to Porto, but we won't discuss that now," the agent told Rádio Brasil.
For this scenario to change, Eduardo Uram stated that Flamengo will need to make moves to convince the Portuguese to negotiate with Ibson. "We have to take it step by step. Flamengo has to show interest, reach what Porto wants," said Uram, who was ironic when discussing Flamengo's interest in keeping the player.
"Football is dynamic. One day they want it a lot, the next they boo it," he concluded.
Joel admits he is emotional about his farewell\ Gazeta Press\
Rio de Janeiro (RJ) - Coach Joel Santana will officially bid farewell to Flamengo on Wednesday, when the team faces América-MEX in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16. After winning the Rio de Janeiro championship last Sunday, Joel knows he will receive a standing ovation from the Flamengo fans. "I don't know what my last team talk will be like. I don't know what it will be like to climb those stairs and face this wonderful crowd for the last time. I don't know if my heart will be able to handle it. In fact, it will, because I have the heart of a lion," Joel said in an interview with Rádio Tupi.
Joel Santana confirmed that he doesn't yet have a definitive departure date for South Africa, but that it should happen by next Sunday. The coach's debut is expected to take place in a competition in June. Joel also commented on some of the players he will leave at Flamengo.
"I can't take any player. If I could, I'd take Torozinho. Toró is a purebred. Can you imagine me taking him and Obina?" the coach joked.

Ready for the challenge, Caio Júnior presents himself to Flamengo
Pedro Ponzoni\Ro Rio de Janeiro\
Flamengo officially introduced Caio Júnior on Tuesday afternoon in Gávea. During the press conference, which lasted about 40 minutes, the coach spoke about the importance of working for Flamengo and took the opportunity to reveal his "family side" when interacting with the players.
Caio Jr. is welcomed by Joel Santana upon his arrival at Flamengo this Tuesday
"I have a bit of an old-timer's style. I don't like comparing players and coaches. The truth is, however, that Joel Santana has a history in football. He's a renowned coach," Caio Júnior added.
"There are people who see risks only as something negative. But I run the serious risk of becoming world champion with Flamengo. The team is very good," he added.
As a club steeped in tradition, Flamengo, besides taking a professional to heaven, can also take him to hell. Fearlessly, Caio Júnior warned that he experienced something similar at Palmeiras.
"I had this experience and was able to withstand the pressure. But I recognize that at Flamengo the pressure is much greater. Especially because Flamengo's fans are much bigger. The repercussion is the same as the Brazilian national team," he said, adding once again.
"When Kleber Leite (vice president of football) called me, I didn't think twice. I could never have imagined that I would be playing in the Libertadores for Flamengo," he revealed.
Coach Joel Santana, who will lead the team for the last time this Wednesday, against América-MEX, at Maracanã, for the Libertadores, highlighted the importance of Caio Júnior's arrival.
"He's a new generation coach and he's going to find a group that's been working since December. The players were hand-picked," Natalino warned.
After the press conference, Caio Júnior was officially introduced to the players. His debut will be next Sunday, when Flamengo faces Santos at 18:10 p.m. at the Maracanã stadium in the Brazilian Championship, behind closed doors (a punishment imposed by the Superior Court of Justice (STJD), still related to the 2007 tournament).
"It's going to be different. Obviously, I'd like to have the fans there. As a coach, I had that experience once, back when I was still with Paraná Clube. It felt like training," concluded Caio Júnior.
Flamengo does not terminate its contract with Nike and is considering changing the contract
Pedro Ponzoni\ In Rio de Janeiro\
For now, at least, Nike remains Flamengo's sports equipment supplier. The club's board met with the company this Tuesday, and a new contract was proposed. The club even considered an amicable termination, as the company had allegedly breached some contractual clauses.
"At the meeting, Nike representatives proposed a change to the contract, which is still in effect. The proposal was good, but it will still be studied," said president Marcio Braga, who preferred not to give a figure, but it is estimated to be between R$15 million and R$18 million.
The Flamengo president also stated that the matter will be discussed starting Thursday. Until then, the Flamengo director will prioritize resolving other issues, primarily with the Club of 13.
Flamengo was already showing signs of irritation with Nike. The situation became practically untenable after the sale, without the club's approval, of a commemorative shirt for the state title, even before the final against Botafogo, played last Sunday (a 3-1 victory for the Gávea team).
In his last training session as Fla's coach, Joel suffers from jokes
Pedro Ponzoni\ In Rio de Janeiro\
Joel Santana's final training session was a relaxed affair. The coach, who will leave the team after the second leg of the Copa Libertadores Round of 21, on Wednesday at 50:XNUMX p.m., against América-MEX, to take over the South African national team, was subjected to some teasing from the players as he left the Gávea field. The new coach, Caio Júnior, was introduced to the players before the session began.
The athletes did a runner's game, and Papa Joel ended up getting a pat on the back. Afterwards, he did jumping jacks, demonstrating that he didn't mind the game.
"Our coach escaped the group for ten months, but on Tuesday he couldn't escape. It was good to relax, but this way, Caio Júnior realized that the atmosphere is good and there is a great friendship between the players," said captain Fábio Luciano.
After the lively kickoff, Joel commented on the tone of his conversation with the players. The coach took the opportunity to thank his players for everything they'd done.
"I told them, if I made any mistakes, I apologize. In a group of thirty players, I can only put eleven to start the games and seven to make up the bench. But I took the opportunity to thank them for everything they did," he said.
The coach, who leaves for South Africa on Monday to begin a new challenge in his professional life, said he had no different feelings when he left the Gávea pitch for the last time.
"I feel like it's my first day at the club. The decision I made was based on my dream of playing in a World Cup. It's a unique opportunity in my professional life, as I'll be representing the host country of the next World Cup. I can't disappoint," he declared.
In Joel Santana's final act, Flamengo hosts América-MEX
From UOL Esporte\ In Rio de Janeiro\
In Joel Santana's farewell as coach, Flamengo will face América-MEX this Wednesday at 21:50 p.m. at the Maracanã stadium in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 2010. Santana is also slated to coach South Africa's national team for the XNUMX World Cup.
Joel Santana will play his last match in charge of the Gávea team on Wednesday
The coach led his final training session on Tuesday and was warmly honored by the fans. He also "passed the baton" to coach Caio Júnior.
In fact, Joel left a good legacy for the new coach. Besides Flamengo's State Championship title, the club has a strong chance of continuing in the South American competition.
In the first match, the team from Gávea won 4-2 and, therefore, can even lose 2-0 or 3-1, which would advance to face Santos and Cúcuta, who face each other on Thursday in Colombia.
Despite the advantage, coach Joel Santana expressed some concern about the euphoria taking hold within the Gávea club: "There was too much celebration and we'll have to be careful because it's a tough game. After losing to us, their team suffered damage," he said.
As usual, the coach didn't reveal the team's lineup. Souza felt a neck problem and will be reevaluated. If he doesn't play, Obina will replace him. Furthermore, Renato Augusto continues to feel pain in his right knee and is unlikely to return.
While the festive atmosphere is present at Gávea, it's nowhere near the same for the Mexican team. The defeat at the Azteca Stadium last week prompted the resignation of Argentine Rubén Omar Romano. The team will be managed by interim manager Juan Antonio Luna.

Players joke with Joel at his last training session
The game at 21:50 PM this Wednesday is "Daddy Joel's." This is the statement from Flamengo's board. There will be tributes to the coach for his work and references to the second state championship won last Sunday. But the focus is elsewhere. In a comfortable position, the Rubro-Negro hosts América-MEX in the round of XNUMX of the Copa Libertadores, at the Maracanã stadium.
In the first leg, in the Mexican capital, Flamengo won 4-2 and could even lose 2-0 or 3-1 to advance to the next stage. But the festive days at Gávea worry Joel, who will be playing his last game for the club before taking over in South Africa.
"I'm worried. There was too much partying, and we'll have to be careful because it's a tough game. After losing to us, their team suffered damage. They changed coaches, presidents..." says Joel.
His replacement has already been announced. But Caio Júnior won't be on the bench just yet. He'll be watching the game from above and observing what lies ahead starting Thursday.
Fla hasn't reached the quarterfinals since 1993
Flamengo has not advanced to the quarter-finals of the Libertadores since 1993. In 2002, they were eliminated in the first phase, and last year they fell in the round of XNUMX to Defensor.
"The players are aware of the importance of the match. It will bring Joel's season to a close, and we want to say goodbye with a victory. It will be a happy day for Flamengo," says defender Fábio Luciano.
As usual, Joel didn't announce the lineup. Renato Augusto left Gávea complaining of pain in his right knee and is unlikely to return to the team. Souza left training with a neck problem and will be reevaluated. If he doesn't play, Obina is likely to replace him. The striker was the standout performer in the Rio de Janeiro title.
Last week's defeat at the Azteca Stadium was América's first as a home team in a Copa Libertadores qualifier. The setback prompted the resignation of Argentine Rubén Omar Romano. The team will be managed by interim manager Juan Antonio Luna.

Players joke with Joel during the last training session
Joel Santana, Caio Júnio, and Kléber Leite chatted for a few minutes after Flamengo's training session. The transitional conversation was lighthearted, with laughter all around. But earlier, in his final training session as the club's manager, Joel didn't have it easy.
As he said goodbye to the players, he was forced to pass through the Polish corridor. He received a few slaps, but they were affectionate. Afterwards, he simulated another gift by doing jumping jacks.
"He escaped for ten months, but today (Tuesday) was the day. It's good to relax," says Captain Fábio Luciano.
Joel Santana spent much of the training session walking alone on the pitch. From afar, he watched his "sons" rejoice in the final of the Campeonato Carioca dos Arachões. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, but goalkeeper Obina's team, wearing a yellow vest, prevailed in the tiebreaker and took the title. He reflected on his departure.
"It seems like yesterday I was coming back here. Everyone was sad, without enthusiasm. The southern lapwing (bird) was flying elsewhere. Now they're here and they even have a big chick," Joel declares.
Criticized, supplier offers R$18 million to stay at Rubro-Negro
A meeting in Gávea aims to smooth over the turbulent relationship. President Marcio Braga does not rule out an agreement.
Eduardo Peixoto From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
A director even announced that Nike was out of Flamengo's plans. It's not. This Tuesday, a meeting in Gávea put the sports equipment supplier back in the running to stay at the club.
The American company offered R$18 million annually to renew the agreement, which ends in June of next year. The amount is double what the club currently receives.
"The proposal is good and will be analyzed. They don't want to lose Flamengo," declares president Marcio Braga.
The relationship between the parties has been strained since 2007. This year, however, the disputes intensified and reached their peak last weekend, when Nike launched a commemorative shirt for the second Rio championship on the eve of the final against Botafogo.
"We wanted to break off the agreement amicably because they no longer serve us. But we haven't ruled out an agreement. We'll see what happens," says the Flamengo president.
The club's board has received two proposals from companies interested in supplying sports equipment. One of them is estimated to cost around R$20 million annually.
'Big uncle', Caio Júnior introduces himself to Fla
New coach arrives at Rubro-Negro willing to listen to Joel's advice
Eduardo Peixoto From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
The Rogério Steinberg Auditorium in Gávea was packed to welcome Caio Júnior on Tuesday afternoon. He even received applause. On his way out, Joel Santana watched his successor's interview with his gaze on the horizon. But the first time he was questioned, the "daddy" of the Flamengo family passed the baton.
"He's the one this time. Get me out of this. I'll explain how our players are behaving. Even the southern lapwing that's there in Gávea, Caio has to have a little patience. He's going to face a group that's been manipulated since December, one of the three best in Brazil," says Joel.
The new head of the "family," Caio, has taken on the role of "uncle" to the players and promises to listen to his predecessor during this transitional period. Joel will coach Flamengo in this Wednesday's match against América-MEX. The newly hired coach's debut will take place on Sunday against Santos at the Maracanã, behind closed doors.
Transition
The first thing is to listen to Joel. I have to have the humility to acknowledge that I need to continue my work. I managed the championship team last year with Joel. It was unforgettable. I'll talk to Joel, and on Wednesday I'll watch the game from above, without participating in the pre-match talk.
Cast
Individual knowledge of the players. That's the ideal and what I'm really concerned about right now. At the very least, understanding their personality traits, in addition to their technical aspects. I consider the information Joel has gained over these ten months to be crucial.
Replace Daddy Joel
Maybe my style is that of an old man. Joel has his profile, the work is done, and I need to build my own. My first challenge is to win over the players. The best advertising for a coach is the players' publicity. I need time. This is a very important moment. I didn't hesitate for a moment. I never imagined I would play in the Libertadores with Flamengo. Things happen in life that we don't understand, but later on, the answer comes.
Risks
It's rare in football for what happened now to happen. Almost rare. While there's a risk in taking over a team in good form, I see a very high risk of becoming world champion and, at first, winning the Copa Libertadores.
I work at Palmeiras
Balance is key. Neither euphoria nor depression. I had an experience last year at Palmeiras, where I was under a lot of pressure. I managed to handle it well. But here, the fans are bigger, the pressure is much greater.
Debut in an empty stadium
It feels like training. It's going to be strange, I'd like to debut with the fans' support.
Flamengo
Flamengo represents a Brazilian national team. The impact is the same, the scale is the same. There are fans everywhere. I watched a few games this year, like the one against Cienciano, and saw Joel's bold attitude.
Fan distrust
I think it's normal because I'm young (43) and have been coaching for four years. I've had important moments, like leading Paraná to the Libertadores and my time at Palmeiras. Unfortunately, in the final stretch, Goiás didn't fare well, and that leaves a lasting impression. But we had the best attack in Brazil, with 64 goals in 24 games.
Red and black glasses and the clipboard
I don't have one yet, but I'm waiting. All the ones I have are gifts. I want to take a look at the drawing board.
President sees controversy over Rio titles as 'bar talk'
According to Marcio Braga, Flamengo cannot be compared to any opponent in Rio de Janeiro
Eduardo Peixoto From GLOBOESPORTE.COM, in Rio de Janeiro
Who holds the lead in Rio de Janeiro titles? Flamengo or Fluminense? After winning their second state championship last Sunday, the tally indicated they were tied at 30. However, the Rio de Janeiro State FERJ (National Federation of Rio de Janeiro State) has fueled the controversy by stating that the 2002 Rio de Janeiro title is sub judice. For Flamengo president Marcio Braga, this discussion is irrelevant.
According to him, Fla has regional supremacy because since it started competing in the State Championship, in 1912, it has beaten its rival by 30 to 26.
"That's bar talk. Fluminense won five titles before the Flamengo soccer team existed. I don't think this other Ferj statistical detail is important. We're ahead of everyone, with more wins, more titles. We're on a different level," boasts Marcio Braga.
Flamengo's dominance in Rio de Janeiro over the past ten years is blatant. The team has won six state championships. Fluminense, with two, and Botafogo and Vasco, with one each, were the other winners.
The last Campeonato Carioca final that Rubro-Negro lost was in 1995. Since then, they have played in the finals of 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2008 and won them all.

Souza's crying inspires provocation from the fans
Botafogo fans, get ready. After Flamengo's title last Sunday, the mockery continues. This Wednesday, a group of fans planned to distribute 10 pacifiers at the Copa Libertadores match against América-MEX.
All to better interpret the children's song "Mamãe eu quero" (I Want My Mom), sung at the Maracanã stadium to mock Botafogo's reputation as a "crybaby." The red-and-black celebration will continue on Saturday with a motorcade.
The rally is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Gávea. Departure will be at 11 a.m., and cars will travel along the entire coastline of the South Zone. The finish line is set for Leme, just under 1 km from the Alvinegro headquarters.
Organizers estimate 400 cars will be at the event. The champion's trophy will be part of the parade, and they're aiming for at least two players to be in the parade.

Coach Caio Jr. announced his arrival at Gávea Stadium on Tuesday as Flamengo's new manager. He participated in a press conference alongside Joel Santana, who will be retiring from the position this Wednesday during the Copa Libertadores round of 16 match against América (MEX), and the club's vice president of football, Kléber Leite.
Caio Jr. faced a barrage of journalists with confidence and good humor. He then proceeded to the field, where he was introduced to the players and closely watched Joel's final training session as manager of the Rubro-Negro.
Check out what Caio Jr. said at the press conference below:
STYLE\ "I adopt the more uncle style (laughs)".\
WORKING WITH JOEL\ "I had the opportunity to participate in the selection of the last championship alongside Joel. I want to continue his work. I want to have individual knowledge of the players, to listen to Joel."\
NO COMPARISONS TO JOEL\ "Just as I don't like to compare players, I won't compare myself to Joel. He has his profile and has done a great job. I hope to build my work, day by day, with honesty and hard work."\
PRAISE FOR JOEL\ "Joel is a bold coach, he showed it in the last game, in attack. He proved it with the results on a daily basis."\
MOMENT OF SIGNING\ "I have sensitivity in some moments of my life and this is an important moment. When Kléber (Leite, Flamengo's vice president of football) called me, I didn't hesitate for a second. I felt it was a different moment."\
COMPETING IN THE LIBERTADORES\ "Last year, I lost to Joel in qualifying for the Libertadores and I never imagined I would be playing in the competition for Flamengo. When it happens, we don't understand, but in the end, it ends up being surprising."\
FLAMENGO'S MOMENT\ "It's difficult in football to take over the team at a big moment. There's a risk that most people see as a negative. I have the risk of becoming Libertadores and world champion."\
SQUAD\ "The team is well put together, it has a very good squad. This is important for the Brazilian Championship."\
WORKING STYLE\ "I have an obligation to get to know soccer players. My way of working is to understand the personality traits of each one of them. I've done this at the clubs I've played for, and I'd like to have information from Joel. This will be important, and this information will be fundamental. It takes two to three months to achieve this in a group, and this conversation with Joel can speed up the process. Every team depends on its players. The coach's biggest job is to get each player to perform to their best without violating their characteristics. Joel is doing this. He knows how to value each player's potential."\
OLD WORKS\ "It's already advice I have to follow. Joel has been playing football longer than me, and balance is essential. You don't have to be euphoric or depressed. When I was at Palmeiras, the team hadn't won a title in a long time, and I took it until the last round with a chance of qualifying for the Libertadores. Here it's bigger, the fans are bigger, and it's going to be different."\
PLAYING BEHIND CLOSED DOORS\ "I can't say, it will be a new experience. It didn't feel like a game, like training. It will be strange, but I would like to debut with the fans' support."\
FLAMENGO = BRAZILIAN NATIONAL TEAM\ "Flamengo represents a Brazilian National Team. The impact and dimension are the same. Whenever I talk about Flamengo, I remember Maracanã, Zico, Júnior, Andrade... It was the best team I ever saw play. Flamengo is a nation."\
DISTRUST\ "I think these criticisms are normal. Being young, I can't win many titles because I haven't had time for them. I'm 43 and have been a coach for four years. I led Paraná to the Libertadores, and I think that was the most memorable moment of my career. My time at Palmeiras was important because of the difficulties and the financial situation. At Goiás, it was a team with local tradition that had a young squad. Unfortunately, we weren't successful. I'll be remembered for that moment, but my team had the best attack in Brazil with 62 goals in 23 games. I was recently overtaken by Figueirense. I regret that; football is about the moment."\
EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION\ "I'll take a look at the clipboard. (laughs). I watched several Flamengo games in the Libertadores. I saw the victory against Cienciano and it was an excellent strategy, since I had negative expectations. I watched Sunday's game. Joel was bold. If it doesn't work out, they would say he was irresponsible. A coach has to have attitude and I hope to have a bold attitude."\
IDENTIFICATION WITH THE CLUB\ "I don't have red and black glasses, but I'm waiting for a gift. All the glasses I have were given as gifts. I hope someone can give them to me as a gift. I've seen one of Joel's here and I thought it was cool. It comes in a small box. (laughs)".\
IS THE SQUAD READY?\ "I may not be in a position to say for sure. Joel has more, as he was a member of the group. I have the impression that the squad is ready for the Brazilian Championship. Having a squad makes a big difference in a championship like this. Everyone plays here, there is confidence and the squad is good. But I can only confirm this from Thursday onwards, when I start working."\
I WORK UNTIL THURSDAY\ "I'm going to introduce myself to the players and make an observation. Transition is difficult in football. This will go down in history and is already a victory for the club."\
Nike doubles its offer to stay at Flamengo
The relationship between the sports supplier and the club is not going well.
LANCEPRESS! Nike executives met with Flamengo's marketing department directors this Tuesday. The topic was the club's poor relationship with the sportswear supplier, which decided to make a new proposal. It would double the current fee. In other words, it would increase from R$7,5 million annually to approximately R$15 million.
– We will analyze this new proposal – said President Marcio Braga.
Even after this meeting with executive Ricardo Colombini, Flamengo's marketing department is unlikely to renew its contract with Nike. Flamengo has received offers from Adidas (approximately R$18 million annually) and Vulcabrás (Reebok/Olympikus) worth R$20 million. LANCENET! attempted to speak with Ricardo Hinrinchsen, vice president of marketing, but was unable to reach him.

Despite the last-minute problem, the player should not be in doubt for this Wednesday's match at Maracanã against América (MEX), in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

Fla faces América-MEX in Joel's farewell
Rubro-Negro has the advantage to advance to the quarterfinals of the Libertadores
LANCEPRESS!
Practically qualified due to the good result achieved in the first leg (a 4-2 victory), Flamengo faces América from Mexico on Wednesday, at Maracanã, at 21:50 pm (Brasília time), with an eye on a dignified farewell for coach Joel Santana and a place in the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores.
The coach won over fans by taking the team out of the relegation zone of the 2007 Brazilian Championship and leading them to the continental tournament. Now, he will replace Parreira as coach of South Africa, the host nation of the 2010 World Cup.
On Sunday, Flamengo secured the state title by defeating Botafogo 3-1 in the second leg of the final. The team didn't suffer from the dreaded fatigue from the trip to Mexico in the first leg, defeating América 4-2 at the Azteca Stadium.
Rested, with morale and a large advantage, the Rio de Janeiro club has the spot firmly in its sights. The team will only be eliminated if they lose by three goals or just two—but in this case, the Mexicans will have to score at least five times. A 4-2 score for the visitors will send the match to penalties.
To further increase the Rio de Janeiro club's favoritism, Argentine Rubén Omar Romano resigned as América's coach after the home defeat in the first leg of the round of 16.
This Wednesday, the team will be temporarily led by Juan Antonio Luna. He debuted with a 1-0 victory over Monterrey in the club's final match of the Mexican Championship Clausura Tournament and will step down after the match against Flamengo.
Forwards Federico Higuaín—brother of Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuaín—and Richard Núñez are injured. Another doubt is midfielder Villa, who traveled despite a muscle strain. His starting lineup will only be determined before the match.
América had the worst campaign in its history in the Mexican Championship - it was last in the local Clausura classification table - and goes to Rio de Janeiro with the objective of finishing the competition with dignity.
In the quarterfinals, the winner of this match will face the team that advances from the match between Santos and Cúcuta Deportivo, who play Thursday in Colombia. The Brazilians travel with a 2-0 lead from the first leg.
