Rio - At the edge of the Gávea pool, where she started swimming at age seven, she has already broken her tooth twice, once playing cops and robbers and the other training. Since then, there have been many stories at the club that became her "backyard" and where she built a history: she was an athlete, a teacher, a supervisor, and vice president of Olympic Sports. But the most special chapter was still to come: last Monday, former swimmer Patrícia Amorim was elected, at age 40, the first female president of Flamengo.

In her third term as a Rio councilwoman, she's proud to have only missed one City Council appearance. "It was a basketball final in Brasília," she recalls. She retired from swimming at 25, but was still swimming until March. "When I swim, I feel like things fall into place, my muscles, my head... Only my hair gets worse."

Describing herself as a calm person, Patrícia says she never loses her temper. "My blood boils, but I don't lose my head," she assures. Even so, she suffered the effects of the grueling campaign for the Flamengo presidency: with a severe headache, she needed to take medication to sleep better and also lost a lot of weight. "I have no idea how much I lost. It was at least three kilos," she says.

During the campaign, many people asked her if, as president, she would have to go into the locker room. And she replied: "I have a good vice president, and if I need him, he'll come in."

But, even managing the club with the biggest fan base in the country, Patrícia keeps her feet on the ground: "I'm not dazzled. I even joke that, as an athlete, I was once a wildflower. I don't like this celebrity thing."

From her time at Gávea, Patrícia remembers living a victorious era. "I lived in a very winning atmosphere. In football, Flamengo was the Brazilian and world champion. At the 1988 Olympics, the club had 27 athletes in its delegation. It was the top of the sport and a championship-winning football team. I hope we have that moment again."

She admits that some frustrations have affected her, but she assures that she knows how to deal with defeats well, for a simple reason. "I know there's always another day," she explains, having been removed from the vice-presidency of Olympic Sports at the beginning of the year. "The answer was political," he says.

In sports, one of his frustrations was not having competed in the Olympic Games of Los Angeles (1984).

"Even though I was 15, that was my Olympics. I would be a finalist because, shortly before, I had beaten the eighth-place team. I was even called up, but I was cut due to lack of funds," she recalls.
