Discover the legacy that the World Cup left in Gávea

Members and visitors to the club's headquarters receive an adidas space and the renovation of the football field as a legacy of the World Cup

The World Cup in Brazil was a success. The Brazilian people displayed hospitality, the players were friendly, and the teams were on the field. After the event—the largest in world sport alongside the Olympics—the teams and tourists departed, but much remained for Brazil. At Flamengo's headquarters in Gávea, adidas and the Dutch Football Federation were responsible for leaving an important legacy for the Most Beloved and its fans.

The new soccer field, surrounded by renovated stands and locker rooms, housed the Dutch national team throughout its participation in the competition, during its time in Rio de Janeiro. On Monday (July 14.07), Flamengo formally regained control of the areas that were under FIFA's control during the World Cup. General Manager of Administration, Marcelo Helman, expressed enthusiasm for the project's success.

"In October 2013, we were approached by the Dutch, at the same time that all the national teams were looking for their training centers. During our visit, we negotiated extensively on the best way to host them. At no point did we discuss renting the space, but rather asking for a legacy to be left with us. The field and its foundations were completely changed. The grass is special; we removed the weeds and hired a specialized company. The work was magnificent, not only for social events but also for the main soccer team, as the idea is that they will come and train here (in Gávea) and bring joy to the public," he said.

In addition to the pitch, highly praised by the media, FIFA, and illustrious European guests, the club gained reserve benches, one of the locker rooms – the other had already been renovated since 2013 –, coolers, balls, bags for sports equipment, cones, rotating goalposts, new fixed goals, new nets, and painting of all football facilities.

In the club's headquarters building, adidas has created beautiful spaces for future corporate and social events. The area where the German company held press conferences with sports stars like Beckham, Valderrama, and Patrick Vieira was left for Flamengo, with modern furniture and facilities to accommodate companies and executives.

"This space was used by adidas for its hospitality center. Before that, it housed the Olympic gymnastics facility while the Cláudio Coutinho gymnasium was being renovated. Now, we have large rooms for corporate meetings, which Flamengo can use and generate more revenue for the club. The World Cup was very good for Flamengo. Not only because of the exposure of our brand, such as with the German players, but also because of the improvements made to the institution, which make fans and members proud. Flamengo encompasses four of the main neighborhoods in the South Zone: Lagoa, Jardim Botânico, Gávea, and Leblon. This attracted the attention of FIFA and the World Cup sponsors, who wanted to set up their "headquarters" here, which made us very happy. Adidas, one of our major sponsors, set up shop here and distributed all the equipment for the World Cup matches from Gávea."

On the building's rooftop, adjacent to the corporate space, adidas created a terrace that blends sophistication, informality, and one of the most beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro, which can be used for events and even catering. The entire floor was replaced with a wooden deck, and the area was waterproofed, nestled amidst the lagoon, Christ the Redeemer, and Pedra da Gávea.

"We brought about a thousand people here, who got to know our Lounge and Flamengo. That was one of the main reasons we created this space: all these people got to know the Mais Querido. It's very important for us, since we sell the Rubro-Negro all over the world, we wanted our other major international clients to get to know the club, which is part of this family. This area was unused and now we can hold events here or rent it out to other companies. Both adidas and Flamengo benefited greatly from this event; it was a great partnership," said Luca Lupino, adidas' global manager at Flamengo.

With the 2016 Rio Olympics approaching, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) will be responsible for leaving another legacy for Flamengo, with the complete renovation of the wrestling center, tennis courts, and the Togo Renan Soares (volleyball and futsal) and Hélio Maurício (basketball) gymnasiums. All resources will be invested 100% in infrastructure, not to mention the significant investment in exchanges between the club's athletes and coaching staff and US representatives, as well as joint marketing plans between Flamengo and the USOC.
